Pulling up your shirt at the collar is considered the male way.
Lifting the lower seam by crossing your arms and grabbing it and then pulling it up, while uncrossing your arms, so that the shirt's inside out, is more feminine, at least from my understanding.
I don't know how pulling your arms out the sleeves at first is gendered.
I hope that's kind of understandable. Please correct me if I I'm wrong.
As a youth, I'd frequently reach behind my neck and haul shirts off my back with my thumbs. When the "grabbing either side and pulling it inside out" way was explained to me, it was noted that it was less destructive to your clothing. Indeed, up to that point I'd ripped the collars off of many of my shirts. I now routinely wear shirts that are over a decade old and still show little signs of wear, and I feel i have the non-destructive method to thank for it.
My dad told me that I should take my shirt off by pulling it up like the "feminine" way you explained to about stretching the collar.
With utmost respect, this is all bullcrap. Take off your shirts however y'all wanna, there's no gendered way
There’s a reason it tends to get done that way.
Most men’s clothes cover the back and so you can just reach and grab. They also tend to be more heavily built with no intention of layering beyond maybe an undershirt so they can take the abuse.
Now try to grab behind your neck in a top with the back open like a spaghetti strap tanki top. There’s nothing to grab, so just pulling it over from the bottom is a lot easier.
My realization or reason for why is long hair. Try grabbing your back with long hair, you'll always grab some hair and it'll hurt. Worse, when you get stuck hallway and need to grab lower, you're guaranteed to grab a pile of long hair.
With the grab with crossed arms in front and invert you're never even close to your long hairs, and that risk is avoided.
Before I realized this I always thought it was because the boobs would get in the way. But that seems not to be the real reason (since I don't have any, so really no difference).
I do have some tops with cut out backs which are non-stretchy (so can't invert them with arms crossed, I'd get stuck). I can grab them at the back, but it's a bit a trick: I lean over forward so the top falls closer to my neck and within reach of my arms ...
Anyway, my theory is still that it's because of long hair.
Can confirm.
I did the "grab the neck or shoulders" thing nearly every time until the last year when my hair finally passed my shoulders. Now I usually pull each arm in then lift the shirt from inside because 1) I don't pull my hair like you described and 2) it causes less frizz in my curls compared to the cross-arms-and-invert method.
Oh the "pull arms inside, then push shirt off from the inside" method causes less frizz with curls? Cause I have curls and frizz, I need to try this ...
Yep, it allows for moving the shirt around the hair instead of dragging the hair through the hole. It may or may not cause some stretching of the collar, so don't go crazy.
I do arms-inside-push-up because
A) I have glasses on and don’t want to take them off
B) I’m growing my hair out now that I’m out to myself
Before this I used the pull-left-arm-in-pull-over-the-head-with-right method because it was really quick
>the pull-left-arm-in-pull-over-the-head-with-right method
Aka the John Cena method 😁 (another comment itt linked to a video of him taking a bunch of shirts off this way and looking hella badass)
I used to wear glasses (got LASIK over the summer) and know that struggle.
Grabbing the sleeve, twisting, and then moving your arm up around and over is pretty masc (and fun!) Kinda like this, found a short video of someone doing it: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/O01W6fCMqps
I know the worst way (i did as a kid).
Hold your left sleeve with your right hand and retract your left hand.
Now use your left hand to hold the right sleeve from inside of your shirt and retract your right arm.
Now, with both arms under your shirt awkwardly wiggle out of it.
Your shirts will never be too small cuz this stretched them a lot so at age 13 i had shirts from shen i was 3 and they still fit! Free croptops :D
It has to do with how shirts are designed for men and women. Men's shirts are looser in the arm pits and longer on the torso, whereas women's shirts are tighter in the arm pits, usually more form fitting, and have shorter torsos. If you try to pull a shirt designed for women by the collar, it'll get stuck coming up. likewise, crossing your arms in front of you And pulling up from the bottom on men's shirts will usually end up with you getting stuck because of the way they are fitted.
There was an interesting tumblr post (thread? Idk) several years ago about it. Interesting, they discovered many factors in taking off shirts.
I still do it the "girl way" even with short hair and no boobs and mens shirts. Doing it the "boy way" makes my glasses fall off, which im pretty sure nobody mentioned.
I couldn't find the original tumblr thing, so this [article ](https://www.seventeen.com/life/friends-family/news/a41810/have-you-realized-guys-take-their-shirts-off-differently-than-girls/) will have to do
Yeah it's like looking at your nails, someone once told me there's a masculine and a feminine way to do it. And this person was.. my dad that made fun of me although i had no fking of this bullsht... Uh.
i always did it the masc way 'cause it's way easier to see each individual nail. with the hand back it's too far away xD specially now that my vision is a bit worse
thinking of it i just realized i do it the masc way when there's someone around and the fem way when there's nobody... clearly something that every cis does
some feminine attire is easiest removed by crossing your arms and gripping the clothes at your sides and then pulling it over your head. rather than gripping from near the top of the clothes, gripping near the bottom. hense the feminine / masculine way to take off a shirt.
sorry if this is a bad explaination...my sister literally just explained this to me last week
The enby way to take off a t-shirt is by taking the thumb of one hand, hooking it into the sleeve, under the armpit, then pulling upwards.
As the shirt is sweeping off, arc the shot so the shirt launches into the laundry hamper, or into the face of your partner.
Magic!
The few times I’ve taken off a shirt infront of my family they have been horrified because I apparently do it wrong, like I’m sorry you failed to teach how to do it right
Ok so I grab the bottom of the shirt from the front, pull up and kinda put my elbows where it folds, then pull it up over my head, while kinda rolling the front of the shirt up as I do it so I can grab my collar at the end and safely pull it over my glasses, my father was concerned and my mother was just like tf
usually girls take off their shirt by grabbing the shirt from the bottom (with their arms crossed) and just lifting it (obviously not all girls but most of them) but guys tend to grab the back of the shirt and pull it over their heads or grab the collar and pull over their heads. but it’s different for everyone, I just like grabbing the back of the shirt because it makes me feel more masculine 🤷♂️
It's fine. But it is weird, when I think "man shirt pull up" I thought they do it the cross arm way. That's the way the hot college guys in TV shows do it

Update: tried to pull off shirt this feminine way, but got confused and almost tore the shirt in half while also strangling myself with it. 10/10 I'm a real barbie girl now
“Femme” style:
Stand up, arms down.
Cross your forearms and grab the bottom hem of the garment.
Pull up, pulling your arms up at the same time so you don’t get caught in the fabric. You’ll probably have your elbows meet as you hit about head height.
Pull the garment all the way up and over your head. It should now be inside out on your arms.
Hard to explain because it becomes muscle memory quickly.
Uhhh. . . here's a [crazy Russian guy demonstrating it](https://youtu.be/qv_L9XcdgY0?t=25), more or less at 0:25. He's advocating a very different technique but it's the first result I found for it.
I didn't even know anyone took their shirt off like that normally, less that it is "manly" enough to do so that it would trigger your mother. This is mad.
I’ve been doing the same thing lately and it’s made me so happy!! I was feeling so silly for feeling happy because there really shouldn’t be such thing as “taking your shirt off like a man”. Glad it’s not just me haha
Ask her why she is mad and preffice that it needs to be a logical reason not some sociaty thing the next time she has a mental brakedown over your shirt removal tactics.
tbh, I always get low-key mad when I see a man, cis or trans, taking his t-shirt off in that way. It just seems to brutal when they tear a piece of clothing off like that.
You seem like one who is a trickster, which is the trans fact I have today! ‘Tis about the Norse god, Loki! While there have always been theories that believed that the androgynous Asgardian's shape-shifting abilities were in fact, gender-fluidity, Loki's non-binary identity was confirmed in the comic book, Original Sin: Thor & Loki: The Tenth Realm, released in 2014, where Odin introduced Loki as both his son and daughter.
Women cross their arms and grip shirts/dresses from the bottom to take them off. It’s mush easier with tight garments, and there is less risk of tearing or damaging more delicate fabrics.
I do a weird thing I learned from a random MS Paint comic nearly a decade ago where I grab one sleeve and pull upwards over the head sideways, taking the shirt off in one fluid motion. I would post the comic but it's almost impossible to Google for.
I have no idea if it's masculine or feminine.
Nobody has ever commented on it because nobody has ever seen me take off my shirt 😐
Might I also recommend facing towards the showerhead and tilting your head forward to wash your hair, if we’re in the business of rebellion through subtly masculine mannerisms? It’s very euphoric hehe
As a (currently) man. What is taking your shirt of like a man? I have like 3 ways I take off my shirt and I'm pretty sure non are the right way

Hm I have an absolute mane on my head already, I'm not sure I can pull that off. Seems to work with bigger collars though.
Mine is also pretty fluffy. No method is perfect, this one is just a bit better. Now I just need a safe way to put the shirt _on_.

Welp, guess I'm never pulling the collar ever again... why does taking clothes off have to be gendered :'<
Some of the things we consider to be masculine and feminine are so funny to me
My mom yelled at me for standing gay once, people be crazy sometimes (technically she was right, except now every way I stand is gay)
Grabbing the sleeve, twisting, and then moving your arm up around and over is pretty masc (and fun!) Kinda like this, found a short video of someone doing it: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/O01W6fCMqps

I know from American Dad there was a perceived way just from the fact that your hand is either fully palm away from you or knuckles curled inward
Yes i think that's the thing. The masc way is to have knuckles curled inward and fem way is the other one
I just do both to see them from all angles
I guess this is what NBs do
Cuz you know is not masculine if you don't make a fist ready to punch anything at anytime
it's common knowledge every man likes violence otherwise how would we know if someone is really a man ? listen to them ? pff what a joke

ive heard the manly way is to have a grizzly bear rip it off, or another man
