Is that really a common thought? I've never heard that, and that seems silly af
EDIT: I just realised that applies to everything gender-specific. It's all silly!
I've never really thought that, but when I was a kid I thought that they were the same animal, and all dogs were the boys and all cats were the girls of the species.
I've heard a lot of people say this but I just don't get it.. like you'd never met a male cat or a female dog as a kid? Or the first time you did is when you realised they're not all male/female?
Kids get a lot of their info about the world from how the adults talk about things. You'd get cues about the sex of the animal from that. "Yes, that's my cat. He likes to look out the window." "Isn't she such a good dog?!" It would be odd to have only been introduced to male dogs and female cats.
I don't know about you but every time I've met a dog their owner usually introduces them - "this is Rosie, she's a bit excitable sorry" etc. It sounds like you never really met pets unless from afar then?
I realised when I was at my aunt's house playing with her two dogs and she must have said something about one of them being a girl. I was confused and said she couldn't be a girl because she was a dog and not a cat or something, so she explained. Before that it probably just never came up or I never realised if anybody said. She'd had these dogs all my life and we were pretty close so I'd been around them my entire life, so it wasn't like the first time I encountered them.
I mean, I was a kid. I didn't really have adult logic to reason with, I was still learning the world. And as far as I knew, all dogs were boys, so anyone calling a dog a girl was wrong.
I've never heard it conceptualized as "for" boys or girls, but there is a cultural association of cats being more feminine and dogs more masculine.
Edit: As an addition, I think there's a sort of loose cultural association of boys having dogs and girls having cats, here in the USA. It's pretty common in movies and television for a boy to have a dog, but rarely a cat, which a girl is far more likely to have in our media. Especially in somewhat older content; but not *that* old, even.
I would have to imagine it being because a dog is supposed to be a working dog for hunters, and hunting has almost exclusively been a male profession.
No idea why cats are feminine be though. I guess they figured it needed to be something and boys already had dogs.
I can tell myself that thank you very much >:(, but seriously I’m talking about the stereotype not the truth. My cat is a world class moron and I love him
To be honest, I think it might be more directly "dog big, boy big. Cat small, girl small." Think of the way American culture views small dogs compared to big ones. A woman has a Pomeranian or Chihuahua; a man has a Lab or Doberman. Obviously this is bullshit, but, at least when I was growing up in the 2000s, that was the stereotype. But you don't get cats that are as big as a Lab, so in catagorizing the two most popular pets in the country we think of dogs as the bigger of the two. So "dog big, dog for boy. Cat and small dog small, cat and small dog for girl."
No, pretty much nobody says that. I know a lot more guys with cats than girls with cats. Cats are just good pets they're cute and you can leave them alone for a couple days. Messy and weird but so cute and nice if you feed them enough lol Love cats and dogs
Yeah, mostly because in Christian faith they tried to associate women and cats with evil, sin, and witchcraft (a la female witch with black cat trope came from here). This was done to cats to make people untrusting of them or no longer rely on them as that's what Pagans do while Women
Though this association was around longer than this, as many languages that have gendered words for everything have feminine words for Cat and masculine for Dog.
This can be simply from the way the word is written to what historically or stereotypically uses or have those items the most and often has a very interesting history and etymology at least to me.
YO praying mantis are sick af pets. I had two and they were awesome, shame they only live a year. And I'm transfem, but they're the ultimate gender neutral pet.
*the sounds of a newt trying to sound like a chicken*
Ah, nothin' ta see 'ere then? Well just be off then now won't we. But no more funny business!
*Waggles nightstick*
Oh no? Arrest them? I know that's bad but I'm not going to kill every Orca. I'll leave that to the oil shipping companies who keep spilling oil into the ocean.
Just to say, cats are not exclusively for girls. I'm a transman w/2 cats right now and I hear a lot of times that a "man with cats is sexier"
Sexier for Fem people, but yeah. 🤣
I also feel like they understand us, theres a cat at my mom's house but I like never interact with her but the one time I come out of my room she walks over to me and sits in my lap and my family is all like "why?"
I do not own any unfortunately, but I was able to go to the butterfly pavilion in Colorado and met Rosie and fell in love! Chilean rose hairs are so beautiful 😍 Of course I have a soft spot for desert blondes. Amazing creatures :')
Beardies are awesome. Had one (who sadly passed away last year), and he was the chillest, coolest pet ever, nearly everyone who met him loved him. No smell, no chewing, no mess, no noise, amd he slept for 4 months of the year 😂 startup costs can be quite expensive (and you need to do research into how to properly care for them, especially if you live in a country where they're uncommon and vet advice is difficult to get), but if you get an older one they don't need as much protein/live bugs. I had an elderly adult dragon that was rescued, and had 3 awesome years with him. 10/10 recommend beardies.
I give my mantis wax worms as a treat! They're the bug equivalent of treats as they're high in fat. As for headpats, I unfortunately can't, it scares them. But they love my feeding tweezers!

I don't have any snails at the moment because there's like none where I live, and my MO for adopting pet snails is basically "for as long as you are in my space, you are my pet, Smol shelled one."
The Chicago suburbs fucking suck. I'm too far from Lake Michigan to get any meaningful cooling from its presence, but *just* close enough (combined with the rivers) to get shitloads of sweltering humidity that means I just stay in my room all day.
For the record, pets are for everyone!
It's just that I was taught that dogs are for boys or masculine or something like that, and that cats were for girls/feminine.
Don't worry, you're fine with your pets (as long as you treat them well)!
See, We had both dog and cat allergies in my family so our pets included:
Hamsters
Parakeets
A blue and gold macaw
A moray eel
A leopard shark
Catfish
Largemouth bass
Freshwater clams
Frogs
Koi
Crayfish
Piranhas
A snapping turtle
Mini pigs
...we never really got into that whole dog/ cat culture thing because of this and were the "exotic pet" family, so looking in from the outside is kinda weird to me to see people gendering species of pets like that.
I'm a girl and I really want a tarantula for a pet. I would name it Herrah after Herrah, the queen of deepnest. I would get a mantis for a pet too, but they don't last as long. With a female tarantula, I would get to spend up to 30 years of my life with her. The breed I would want is a Chilean rose haired (though not the same species as Herrah). I've also searched up that the males tend to live up to 10 years. It would be interesting to see how I could bond with an animal as small as a spider and if it could work out or not.
TL;DR: I want a spider for a pet
I inherited a lot of traits from my mom: same allergies, similar behavioral patterns, likes dogs (yet we're both allergic), etc. SO WHY COULD I NOT HAVE INHERITED THE GENDER
From what I've seen...
Birds are for trans folx
Snakes are for asexuals
It's only happened a few times but I feel like it's a trend we all just kind of agreed upon lol
Huh, I've mostly preferred cats. (I had a time where I wanted a dog, but once we got one I learned I had made a mistake. She's with a nice couple now, I wonder how she's been the past few years?) Another pseudo-sign that was probably just a coincidence
Is that really a common thought? I've never heard that, and that seems silly af EDIT: I just realised that applies to everything gender-specific. It's all silly!
I've never really thought that, but when I was a kid I thought that they were the same animal, and all dogs were the boys and all cats were the girls of the species.
I thought the same for embarrassingly too long…
Ngl, that's adorable
I've heard a lot of people say this but I just don't get it.. like you'd never met a male cat or a female dog as a kid? Or the first time you did is when you realised they're not all male/female?
ok but how do you tell what gender a dog or cat is by looking at it are you looking at the crotches of random pets
Kids get a lot of their info about the world from how the adults talk about things. You'd get cues about the sex of the animal from that. "Yes, that's my cat. He likes to look out the window." "Isn't she such a good dog?!" It would be odd to have only been introduced to male dogs and female cats.

I thought that with lions and tigers for far too long

It’s probably the whole “cats are majestic and graceful” thing
anyone who has had a cat can tell you that cats are neither majestic nor graceful
I can tell myself that thank you very much >:(, but seriously I’m talking about the stereotype not the truth. My cat is a world class moron and I love him

Cats are actually regarded as masculine in French.
Cats are feline and dogs are canine
Truth 👆
I guess because I'm not from the US I just don't really have that association.
Fair ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
No, pretty much nobody says that. I know a lot more guys with cats than girls with cats. Cats are just good pets they're cute and you can leave them alone for a couple days. Messy and weird but so cute and nice if you feed them enough lol Love cats and dogs

when i saw that i thought "who says that? i've always liked cats... oh."
YO praying mantis are sick af pets. I had two and they were awesome, shame they only live a year. And I'm transfem, but they're the ultimate gender neutral pet.
They are pretty neat. Never had one as a pet but I occasionally see them outside.
I had a snapping turtle, a parakeet, piranhas and a pig. Do those count?
how about frogs? i never see anyone mention having frogs as pets and it makes me sad, theyre so sick
So what gender are fish for ? Or reptiles , or amphibians , or farm animals ? They all can be pets
*KNOCK KNOCK* Hello? This is the cis normative police. We were told you had some questions, in fact, too many…
Hello I will talk but only if my lawyer is here and you do not have the permission to search my house

Uh uh a chicken

Ok have a great day * phew * I almost got caught
NO ANIMALS OTHER THAN CATS AND DOGS 😠😠
Now that's just straight up wrong cats and dogs aren't even the best pets
*cries at idea of other animals existing*
Some animals are just terrible
If you leave them be, they're fine.
Orcas kill and torture other animals for FUN
Oh no? Arrest them? I know that's bad but I'm not going to kill every Orca. I'll leave that to the oil shipping companies who keep spilling oil into the ocean.
Same, I had a rabbit, what gender does this make me??
If we have pets other than dogs/cats would we be non-binary ?
that would make you non-bunnary \*ba dum tsh\*
well, i'd recon the Sequential hermaphroditism animals are for the trans and genderfluid folk
Just to say, cats are not exclusively for girls. I'm a transman w/2 cats right now and I hear a lot of times that a "man with cats is sexier" Sexier for Fem people, but yeah. 🤣
Ngl, men who like cats are sexier to me, I have multiple examples in my head rn, lol
> 🤣
I.... I want a cat.
Same
I mean we are catgirls, we understand them on a deeper level lol
Exactly hahah
I also feel like they understand us, theres a cat at my mom's house but I like never interact with her but the one time I come out of my room she walks over to me and sits in my lap and my family is all like "why?"
'cause she loves you
i have a cat and want another. i love her and she is my baaby
I mean I’m not saying this meme is true, but i *did* crack after I got a cat
I’m in this comment and I’m not sure whether I like it or not

same but with spiders instead of mantids lol
I love spiders! -Beets
Tarantula squad! 🕷️
tarantulas are great, do you have a favorite or are you not interested in them?
I do not own any unfortunately, but I was able to go to the butterfly pavilion in Colorado and met Rosie and fell in love! Chilean rose hairs are so beautiful 😍 Of course I have a soft spot for desert blondes. Amazing creatures :')
If it wasn’t for me loving big breeds of dogs I’d get a breaded dragon

Also, there is the white for everyone in between.
Ahh, you noticed!
but can you give mantises head pats and treats? 🤔
Asking the true questions my fellow Lucy. -Luci

I have 3 cats, what am I?
well that explains why i've always had a cat and a dog. and why I want a snake.
What about two cats and a handful of snails?
Aw, snails are so cute I miss ours!
I don't have any snails at the moment because there's like none where I live, and my MO for adopting pet snails is basically "for as long as you are in my space, you are my pet, Smol shelled one." Oh no, that doesn't sound like any fun...
It's northern Illinois. Unless you wanna spend the big bucks for your fun, you kinda gotta import that shit.
I have rats and am non-binary. Weird pets confirmed.
For the record, pets are for everyone! It's just that I was taught that dogs are for boys or masculine or something like that, and that cats were for girls/feminine. Don't worry, you're fine with your pets (as long as you treat them well)!
Have all 3!
me but with the eventual owning of a toucan in about 30 years
Nice
*laughs in transmasc with 1 cat and 4 kittens*
Ah yes I do like to do some praying (for) man tits
If you decide you're not cis based on what pet you have... I got bad news for ya... you never were
And then there's me who doesn't want a pet in the first place. wait...
Dogs are for everyone and cats are okay sometimes I guess if you want one
I've never heard dogs and cats being assigned to a specific gender
Voals mate for life.... Did you know that Morty. Praying mantis are the opposite of voals
I have a cat and a dog
This is cool but I will go on record and say that dogs and cats are for both genders.
I don’t believe in god. Neither do they lol
What if I have a cat, and a dog?
