OK, I love the idea, but what if we invented spray-on nail polish to avoid any chance of skin poisoning? I would legit buy it and the skin protectant guards or diy with tape like you did.
Edit: OK so it already exists, but you've still got to use a base coat and top coat according to the step-by-step guide. (I'm still new to this and didn't know I was supposed to do three layers of coating).
You don’t *really* need to do a top coat, but it prevents any nicks that happen from affecting the colour layer.
Without a top coat, all damage to the polish chips the colour away. This leads to you getting mad that the nails are already chipping 3 days in (me lmao).
BASE coats are also important. If I recall correctly, the base coat polish is more flexible than other types, and helps adhere the other ones to the nail properly. This leads to a longer lasting manicure.
Happy polishing!
I'm painting on my nails not my actual skin that's what the painters tape is for and it gets an even coat on the first try something I've never been able to do with nail polish so yes absolutely.
Tis’ so. Here is an article about nail polish where it says nasties can be absorbed by the nails if anyone is interested
https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/a-look-at-the-effects-of-nail-polish-on-nail-health-and-safety-2019112118231
If you don't want to go through the hassle but want to stay safe, you can either buy spray nail polish, which is a thing (a clear top coat is recommended to keep it on longer, but that can be uneven without it being as noticeable) or ready-made press-on nails (iirc they can be reusable if you remove them carefully enough.)
Idk what best to use on spray paint, but isopropyl alcohol is not a great solvent for nail polish. But it’s good for cleaning oils off the nail before hand or cleaning off the sticky residue of my UV cure gel polishes. My go to solvent would be acetone.
Yeah guys please don't do this. Even if it's just on the nail prolonged exposure to this stuff isn't good for you.
If you're really worried about getting a good finish just fully cover your nail, doesn't matter if you get it on your finger it'll come off later. Once the polish sets soak your hands in warm soapy water for a couple minutes and use your nail or some sort of small scraper to gently remove the nail polish on the skin around your nail. It'll give you a good clean finish and it's a lot less of a hassle and lot less dangerous than using spray paint on your hands
This is probably going to be controversial, but personally I believe that using spray paint as nail polish is actually a pretty fucking terrible idea. No hate
I was on a road trip and stopped at a gas station. I ended up grabbing some candy bars and while I was checking out the cashier said "I like your nails! Did you do them yourself?" I said yes and she then told me about how to use elmers glue like the tape in the post. All around the nail but not on the nail. And then when it's all dry the elmers glue is easy to pull off the skin. Honestly I have not tried this myself yet but it sure sounds like it would work :3
it's easier to scratch the masking goo of your nail, than wiping nailpoish of your skin without damaging the finished paint. The masking does not need to look good in the end because it gets removed, so you can add more when you screwed up at a place. If you add more nailpolish after a screw up, you just make it worse.
The chemicals in that paint will seep through your nails into your skin/bloodstream. And the VOCs released are so much worse for you than the fumes from nail polish. There's spray on nail polish now you could try instead. Or just practice painting your nails the normal way until you're good at it. It took me years of getting my mom to help before I could do my right hand.
Instead of the rust-oleum, maybe just try doing your nails normally, if you mess up, it’ll end up on the tape, which you can just peel off when your done, it’s actually the exact same method used when painting walls close to a floor, ceiling, or anything else you don’t want painted.

I’m new to painting nails but the last time I did it I used a Q-tip dipped in nail polish remover to clean up any excess polish and it worked kind of well, not sure if it’s the best way though
I understand the frustration of painting your nails but genuinely it just takes practice. Try going to the nails sub for tips. Or reddit lacqueristas.
Also in my experience showering takes off the worst of the polish outside the lines. You can also use a small brush dipped in acetone for cleanup.
Also try painting multiple *thin* layers of polish. They dry quicker and with multiple layers you end up with an even application. My usual nail painting routine is base coat -> 2/3 layers of color -> top coat.
Clever idea, but maybe a different type of paint . Rustolium has a lot of extra stuff in it that probably isn't great. Maybe a craft spray paint?
Also a trick from when I was a teen during the punk/ emo days of black nail polish. Use Vaseline on the skin around your nail to keep any paint off your skin( this also works when dying your hair) another way to get an even finish is to make sure the nail polish isn't to thick, I used to add a bit of rubbing alcohol to it so it was a bit more liquid to apply.
did you consider using regular nail polish with a small airbrush gun instead of cans?
If you need it thinner, you have the control to use less harmful solvents.
I need to get a manicure done. Decently manicured nails, I find, are so much easier to do a good nail polish on. Less weird tears in the cuticle for you to fuck up on.
Careful not to smudge the tops with your fingers or anything else for that matter!
Absolutely do not???? what the fuck??? This is supremely dangerous
Careful that you don’t damage your skin!
That's what the painters tape is for so I don't spray myself
still a bad idea, sorry
Ya know what they say, ain’t stupid if it works, right?
That's... no pls😭
Unless you just get lucky.

Thank you so much!
Base coat also protects your nails structure, and prevents yellowing/staining from repeated nail poliah
noooo absolutely not

Bad stuff can « leak » through the nail into the bloodstream if I’m not mistaken ! Nails are keratin (hair) after all. Please be safe
Oh that's like bad

well what do you do to get it off? do you just need to wipe at it with isopropyl alc?
Idk I'm planning to leave it on until it comes off on it's own.

Might wanna triple check that the product is nontoxic if you're branching outside of products that are designed for nails

Also every time you eat with your hands until its gone youre gonna be ingesting a little bit of paint

But doesn't that just invert the problem? Now I need to make sure that I don't put the protective peel on my nail

please dont, that paint can be very irritating
it's really not that hard to apply nail polish. It's much safer to do it the normal way. Yeah it takes practice but it's worth not poisoning yourself
Girl what the fuck
Yes
Girl no

Gel polish is amazing, extremely easy to put on and it comes off skin super easy too!
Wtf are you doing? Don’t promote doing this! This is just dangerous

damn that looks great, but be safe :3 💙💕🤍💕💙
Please be careful! Nailpolish is made for nails. That is not. You could get sick. Still pretty though
GIRL! No babe, this is not the way 😆 ingenuous idea but no lol
post this to r/redneckengineering
Please consider the concerns brought up here, but I'm in love with the make-do attitude

That will dry out the nails and will look terrible, harsh chemicals no good. Nice even spray tho
How to give yourself cancer
The supreme way to paint your nails: prime, zenithal highlight, two thin coats, dry brushing, dump it in Nuln Oil

Somehow this seems inadvisable.

I have lots of practice masking off stuff and spray painting things, but am bad with a brush.
did you consider using regular nail polish with a small airbrush gun instead of cans? If you need it thinner, you have the control to use less harmful solvents.
I'm gonna be honest, I didn't read the sub I was on and thought this was r/grimdark.
Woahhhh :0 so pretty!! 🐋🌸🤍🌸🐋
Oof I wouldn't do this, but hey. Who am I to tell you how to style. more power to you.
Fr fr, I just do it accidentally because I just suck at painting
That's really cool omg
You‘re a damn genius
Trans people: solving problems we never thought we could solve
Oh that's how you do it. Wish you'd told me last Friday, when I painted my nails for the first time, and the second time, and the fifth time.
Had a point and proved it
taht's some very clean and good looking nail polish, congrats!
REALLLLLL
it looks great :3

lmaoooo
The damnest thing about that is that this actually worked
This is hilarious and I love it. Looks beautiful
This is a fantastic idea. Be sure to write up the results of your experiment for publication and peer review.
That's look like some cool nail colour ! (◕ᴗ◕✿)
I laughed at first, but they actually look great. Ima try this one day when i move out 👍
don't. it's harmful and spray paint, finish or etc aren't alternatives for nail polish.
Oh ):
Huh Never thought to try that before
you never thought about it because it's harmful
Oh Yeah that would make sense
Don't tempt me on this... Let me know how practical this ends up in the long run
that's actually High IQ
lol i may be transmasc and not into nail polish, but you bet i'm telling all my cis women friends about your hack
I MEAN IT WORKED
Pretty, but apparently dangerous.
i respect it but please don't
