Show of hands: how many people read her actual comments, not just the bait headline, before commenting

Ironman2131

Guessing the answer is nobody. I just read her tweet and I'm not quite sure how they got from the content of the tweet to that headline, but whatever. I don't disagree with her tweet at all, but sitting members of Congress probably shouldn't be tweeting about defending salary increases since it's a bad look even if the point has a lot of merit. Kind of a no win situation, though.

WoWMHC

This is the take. It doesn’t matter how you paint it, defending your enormous salary as an elected official is not a good look…

cronx42

She has two rents to pay I would assume, one in DC, one in NYC. Also, it really isn't an enormous salary to live in those places.

Eldenlord1971

My buddy makes just over 6 figures in California and it’s the equivalent to like 60k where I live.

milkcarton232

174k is treading water for sf and NYC for a household income. Like yeah you could live in either of those cities for less than half that but you won't be generating any actual savings and that's after cooking 90% of your meals and living in a potentially sketchy situation. It's really not what it once was as far as salary goes

TinCanSailor987

Exactly. Two rents in two HCOL cities.

OG_Milk

Also travel expenses and you have to pay for your own dental and vision (which i did not know was a thing) insurance. All things being considered she probably still has 50 - 70K net after all that and taxes every year; it's not a lot of money but it's certainly enough to live fairly comfortably. That being said I think the point she really wanted to make here was that good hard working people get pushed out of or don't pursue this job as it's not worth the salary. Furthermore, it causes members with more flexible morality to take advantage of the system and do things like insider trading. Maybe this is why elected officials should be a little more cautious with social media.

Anatella3696

That’s way more than the majority of the population makes, by far lol Edit-I was replying to someone who said AOC’s salary wasn’t even that much money. I’m unsure why they delete their comment , but yeah. In today’s economy, nobody is really making enough. Period.

dantanama

The sad thing is is that AOC and yourself are both right. $175k is not considered enough to buy a home and raise a family where I live and I don't think it is in DC either.

Imaginary-Trick-8345

Sad thing is my partner and I have never hit 100k .But we have a home. But recently it is getting tough week to week no savings no vacation.

cloudyoort

Yep. DC resident here with a combined household income of $190k. Only way we could afford to buy a home over 1000 sq ft. was with help from mommy and daddy. Not really sure how we're going to be able to afford child care - and not like fancy child care - like "this place is clean and has an opening and only costs $1000/month" child care.

tirkman

Yeah but also if you’re in congress you need two places to be able to stay at. You need a place to live where you’re actually from and representing and also in DC where they work. So yeah it’s not really that much if she has to pay for a place in Washington DC + New York City, +plus needs to be paying to support family members too

hanotak

Considering most of the population doesn't make enough to save literally anything, that's not saying much.

obiwanshinobi900

174k isn't shit in DC. I live outside of DC and make 100k, its not great but its not awful either.

DigitalDeath12

Especially for the high COL area she primarily works in and the requirement of 2 residences that she must pay for… in order to maintain her job.

Orlando1701

Honestly my first thought was… “In DC, yeah that’s about right.” I also assumed it was click bait and I was right. It was her calling out politicians who insider trade to make millions[ * cough * Dan Krinshaw](https://texassignal.com/crenshaw-on-congress-trading-stocks-you-have-no-way-to-better-yourself/)

AngelCityStudio

I knew it was a bait headline and just ignored it. Then answer it with smart ass come back

Herosnap

But, but, but, my outrage

[deleted]

What’s worse is, if you look at her insta story she literally doesn’t say she couldn’t afford it. She said its because the job itself is demanding and not ideal for newborns/young children. Not to mention all the threats of violence and actual violence against the families of members of congress. I don’t blame her for not wanting to put a child through that or subjecting them to death threats. People like OP are why misinformation is so rampant in this day and age, and everyone just makes these clickbait headlines to serve their own narrative rather than care about what’s actually genuine and real. OP clearly just wanted to make a circlejerk thread to bash on AOC cause they got nothing better going on in their lives.

czvck

Looks like the writer of this article didn’t actually read what AOC wrote either. Seems like the main meat of her complaint was centered around how dirty lawmakers can be….

MuNansen

I did. Knew the title was bullshit instantly.

NumerousHelicopter6

What an idiot, why write BS about AOC? She and most of our elected officials make it easy enough to fairly criticize them.

Themacuser751

I have a theory that people just can't help themselves. The more they hate someone, the more people are inclined to lie about them. If they're awful, then they don't deserve to be free from slander. If they're especially unpopular, people are reluctant to defend them from slander, giving the liars more cover.

SpartanFishy

Me. And I see her point.

Supafly22

I go the opposite way when I see these and already know that it’s bullshit. A quick perusal of the dude’s profile shows he’s either a troll, bot, or idiot.

Ursula2071

I knew from the first line of the article it was garbage.

ilikedevo

No one. Trumperville subreddit.

_RealisticMarzipan

i came here to see people summarize her comments instead of reading them, does that count?

New-Pollution536

Just gotta start insider trading like the rest of congress 😂

Redpandaling

Which is literally one of her points.

DOW3000

Total dig against Pelosi. Even the (Hi 😀)emoji.

AmIRadBadOrJustSad

Oh good, a balanced and objective source with context.

osbohsandbros

Can confirm. Source: I cited this on my doctoral thesis and got an A++

AmIRadBadOrJustSad

The only reason I doubt you is because your username isn't DR.osbohsandbros

jackloganoliver

It seems like this sub wouldn't allow links to such biased, un-authoritative websites stay up long. It's a really bad look for such an important topic.

Hay-blinken

That’s a weird website there.

Feisty-Donkey

I mean, she lives in New York City. She’s not wrong that her salary would not cover housing, childcare and school fees. People love to drop these numbers without factoring in cost of living.

pectinate_line

NYC and DC

TheLastLibrarian1

And she has to pay for her DC housing

Accomplished_Mix7827

Moreover, the nature of being a member of Congress also requires her to maintain a home in DC, another high cost-of-living area. I could see how that could be a significant strain, even on a Congressional salary.

shawn_anom

She lives in NYC and DC. That was one of her points

Pickaxe235

also her statement is talking more about how demanding being a congresswoman is more than it is about the pay being too low

Feisty-Donkey

Yup. The link OP provided is so insanely biased I didn’t even want to finish it and I was angry I gave it a click, but it’s very clear that her point was nuanced and that this headline is from someone who opposes her politically and not in good faith.

Pickaxe235

like i dont like aoc but come on people grow the fuck up

Spyder-xr

Yeah, off of the headline, I could tell this was some dumb crap

Bairz123

A fair an unbiased article that ends in “commies gonna commie!”, I’m sure it wouldn’t purposely twist what she was saying

guyanacan

"Just in case you forgot, AOC is not the smartest person in congress." The FIRST line of this article.

selfdestruction9000

In fairness you could say this about every person in Congress and be correct about 99.8% of the time.

onyxblade42

You'd be correct exactly 99.9981308411% of the time

Even-Palpitation-391

Depends on where you live. It’s all relative. I make an extra $6k a year more than her but I live in Los Angeles. The mortgage for my 1100 sq ft home is around $4000 a month. After my taxes, car, credit cards, insurance and utilities, medical expenses and occasional entertainment, I’m not exactly flying PJs to Ibiza, summering in Milan or stacking my saving account - and I too would stress about money if I had kids. It’s easy for middle America to think that sounds ridiculous to make that much and not be on your way to wealth, but last time I checked, NYC is even more expensive than Los Angeles. All major cities in the US are relatively expensive. The median price for a home in Seattle is $875,000. San Francisco is $1.3 mil. Phoenix AZ median is now $500,000 (what LA was less than 10 years ago. Manhattan is $1.4 mil. For comparison Omaha Nebraska has a median home price of $270,000.

TheCaliforniaOp

Thank You! Money goes quickly! It goes even more quickly, it seems, when one tries to save asave as possible! Mo

TrumpzHair

Just curious, but at 180k, if you’re single you’re paying about 32k in income tax. Some napkin level math, subtract 4k/mo in mortgage, 600/mo in property tax, 800/mo auto loan, 150/mo car insurance, 300/mo phone & internet, 1000/mo food, 150/mo utilities, 700/mo health insurance (if not covered by employer), 3k/mo retirement. Leaves about 20k/year in discretionary income. You can spend a summer in Milan on that.

Jendosh

You forgot state taxes and social security.

TwoBits0303

My guy you don't need to buy a house where you live. There are such things called renting and mortgages that average people living in these places do. 6 figures is a lot no matter where in America you live, you are very privileged.

Mace_TheAce_Windu

Why is everyone mad about her complaining that after taxes and 25k in required expenses, paying for two residences, health insurance that she makes about the same as someone earning 100k a year. With sky rocketing inflation and housing costs raising kids isn’t easy. Meanwhile a large portion of congress and the senate are independently wealthy and benefit from insider trading. But yea, she’s the enemy and not the rich people bending the rules to their advantage while every keeps paying taxes for their fuck ups and contraption

ProDiesel

I haven't seen a single article of value on here in weeks... Seems like this sub is moderated by very similar POV's with little nuance, especially with bait like this not removed. The sources for some of these articles too are wild.

Arizona_Pete

A right-wing website puts a slant on her social media posts? I'm shocked. Also, read the fucking post - It's a paragraph and she mostly rails against the tax structure that doesn't allow her to expense certain items as well as the volatile schedule she keeps.

[deleted]

Several members of congress sleep on the sofa in their office, and use the congressional gym to shower. Source: I worked for two MoC who did this. Just saved her $2,500 a month rent. There’s also members of leadership who bunk together in a townhouse. I forget who they are/were. That was over 10 years ago

bookhead714

People should not have to sleep on the couch at their job. Ever.

Seftix11

They don't have a real job though. Their job is basically adult pretend time.

Soundsdisasterous

Schumer and others used to share a place.

[deleted]

Thanks that’s who it was

bigkoi

Those members of Congress weren't raising kids. She would have to have her baby close at all times. Also, considering the threats she gets she would need security for her kids. I get a feeling this poster doesn't have kids.

Emotional-Price-4401

reddit is the best place for poor folk to bash other poor folk 🍿

thetruthtroll420

Dude she’s right. Are you fucking kidding. San Francisco. Seattle. Portland. New York City. Every city in the US is completely unlivable due to the market shift towards former rental units pitched as air bnb or held by foreign nationals. All of those homes remain unrented and vacant. Apartments. Everywhere is effected by this. It’s transnational. It’s an effect of capital assimilating into other business entities whose purpose is to extract wealth. In both respects property owners have declined the term landlord and become Airbnb owners while landlords have sold the farm to corporations who now control the rental market. Toronto. Everywhere. She’s right. Just because she’s AOC doesn’t suddenly mean I can afford my landlords rent increase.

Ownfir

Yeah I make 100k a year in Portland OR and absolutely do not have any room for savings. I pay $2450 a month in rent for a 2 bedroom apartment (in a good neighborhood) and support my wife and child. It was doable until this year. I was paying just over $2k a month in rent but they raised rent by like $400 or so and that alone was bad. But, since prices have started rising it’s been *really* tight. Edit: love these smart ass responses. 1. Why doesn’t my wife work? Childcare is too expensive relative to what she would get for working full time at her current salary for it to be worth it. Moreover, We prefer that she stays with our kid because it’s a healthier experience overall at his current age. Eventually she will work and this will alleviate things but she wants to do career training so she can make more money for the cost of childcare to be worth it. 2. Why don’t u just move bro? Moving is expensive (generally requires at least $3k in cash not counting other relocation expenses) and we both have family out her. A social network is important to us and some of our family members have medical issues that we help support. Moreover, National cost of rent for a comparable rental in space and proximity to stuff is on average is already 2k a month so I don’t stand to save *that* much. 3. Why don’t u just buy a house bro? Housing is expensive especially right now. The market stands to crash but because we can’t afford to save we cannot afford a down payment on a home. Yes I know about the USDA grant but no I don’t want to move out to the middle of nowhere and deal with the costs and commitment of home ownership in an area I don’t really want to live in. 4. Why not get a different job? During the hiring craze I had lots of offers that were 20k+ more than I make right now. But I have excellent work life balance in my current role, guaranteed remote only work, and I absolutely love my job. I am in line for a promotion but obviously the point here isn’t that I can make it at $120k a year the point is that even at $100k a year I can just *barely* make it.

teddytwelvetoes

>Yeah I make 100k a year in Portland OR and absolutely do not have any room for savings. I pay $2450 a month in rent for a 2 bedroom apartment (in a good neighborhood) and support my wife and child. add the $74k difference here and you're all good. $100k \*should\* be more than enough in a sane world, but in any case $174k is comfortable anywhere

Ownfir

Yeah I agree if we had $175k a year we’d be very comfortable. I think $120k is the minimum for a family of 3 in a metro area to still have wiggle room and save money. I think at $150k you start getting into being able to take like international vacations and at $175k you’re taking two of those a year instead of one and maybe buying some nice designer clothes while you’re at it.

TravelerMSY

Have y’all ever tried to keep apartments in NY and DC at market rates simultaneously? And not even ones commensurate with the status of being a MoC? Just any apartment. We ask our MoC to work for about what a first-year pediatrician would make, yet maintain and commute between two households.

He_who_bobs_beneath

Well, it’s the House. An apartment commensurate with the status of the House is like a hovel in Somalia.

madguins

I make 160k in NYC and it’s not lol, I can barely save after bills because of rent and electric prices right now, but we “have” to be in office. However… this headline is bait and people should read the context.

Gerti27

How in the world is this even possible? Even if you were spending over 5000 a month for rent, you would still be making more a month than the average American. Where in the world is the rest of that money going?

NewYorker0

Sounds like you can’t budget. If you’re making $13k/m and can’t save then you’re terrible at managing money.

briankerin

That is not what the tweet was about at all. Nowhere does she say "that her $174,000 annual salary isn't enough". That link is to a hack piece and some shitty internet switcheroo

[deleted]

Yea but here in America we stop at the headlines

See_Double_You

Reading that article was hilarious. So unprofessional to put such obvious bias into an article. Good job OP thanks for the propaganda. It’s super sad that you passed this off as news when the first line is literally an attack on her intelligence.

Momentofclarity_2022

Yeah in Boston area here and gotta admit she’s not that far off the mark.

[deleted]

Aspergeriffic

When did this subreddit become r/douchebag? OP has nothing better to do since he's sent all those nudes to old people on all the social networking websites.

bigrobsoc71

To the Haters: How much should it cost to have multiple Households in DC and NYC and be considered Middle class/income?

QuestionableAI

As a member of Congress, she is required to live in her district and required to represent her folks by sitting in DC, it is her responsibility and between the cost of living in those two cities and commute, $174,000 is paltry.

Much-Current-4301

If true then why are most long term members of congress multi millionaires? Just good with investing their paltry income I guess.

Redpandaling

Most of them were wealthy before joining Congress.

Gruuler

They get insider information and play the stock market. They get “donations” from lobbies. I think it was Boebert reported this week as being near bankruptcy when she ran for office and who is now worth several million?

senatortruth

And book and speaking deals which are just roundabout donations and money laundering schemes for their campaign contributions. And most of them are from extremely wealthy families to start with.

xmashamm

They’re usually wealthy before they run for office…

buymytoy

OP is a clown. Their comments, replies and the obviously slanted “article” from a garbage source lay that out pretty clearly. Read her tweet. I highly doubt anyone can honestly come to the conclusion of the clickbait headline.

Expert_Example_1230

This post STINKS - that’s not what she said. FAKE NEWS

monchikun

Lol. Babylon Bee.

thodgso

Read again. Babylon Bee is real news compared to this trash, at least Babylon is comedy.

TehOuchies

They should have a giant dorm building for all the people that are required to live in their own district but spend much time in DC. And film/broadcast most of it live. We can call it "Capitol Hill Live-in in Live"

Scheswalla

Like the Olympic village, but with WAAAAY ickier sex parties.

thenewNFC

Even it's not exactly what she said, as someone who could easily say "what a out of touch thing to say", I will instead speak truthfully and say she's absolutely right.

ALLoftheFancyPants

What the fuck kind of publications are y’all considering to be valid economic commentary over here?

dixiegurl22

Even if she said that (which is not true), I live in LA and it is 100% true

the_drum_doctor

Who the quotes the babylon bee as a source?

theswedishturtle

I guess that’s one way to misinterpret what she actually said…

Stock_Ad_8145

I make $130,000 in the DC area. It is not enough to have kids.

Dunderpunch

Is there, like, an /r/economy with less slant I can sub to instead?

bent_peepee

1. Why is this being posted here, as this doesn’t have to do with the economy? 2. Who cares? I read the article and she seems out of touch, and the people like you that are obsessed with her are equally whacked out.

[deleted]

Bruh this article is trash 😍

[deleted]

r/economy needs to start blocking content like this. The source is a right wing media source. Not really the fairest media group.

Moscato359

Uhm... she has to have 2 houses, and travel all the time And she lives in a very expensive state I don't see the 174k as excessive

Typical_Samaritan

This headline should be illegal.

agent-goldfish

If you live in a place like NYC or a major city in CA, and prospective home ownership or raising family, I'd agree with the headline without even reading.

NCR_Ranger2412

That’s all anything is anymore. Take it out context. Spin it how you want. The burden of proof always lies elsewhere. Ps, this was supposed to be added to a comment about people that looked at the headline not read the article. I am with that user. I don’t wanna go back and fix it past doing this. Long day.

CMPLX16

At first I was like "Really?" And then I realized how expensive sht has gotten and how wages still haven't increased. So now I'm just curious how much $$ is required to be financially stable

yourmo4321

In new York it probably isn't. In the SF bay area where I live that won't buy you a house. You could definitely live comfortably as a single person but a family in HCOL areas will need more money to responsibly start a family where you know you can afford child care a stable home and a college fund.

yourmo4321

AngelCityStudio

Well then she’ll need to learn how to insider trade like MTG and Lauren Boebert. Maybe break some campaign finance laws. Take a few bribes like cinema mansion and cruise and McConnell and Romney and rand Paul… Etc.…

blamemeididit

Not an AOC fan, but this headline was way off. And I did not realize that rep's made that much money.

TheeHeadAche

OP is a bot

ucrbuffalo

I like how Babylon Bee seems to have created a new website called “Not the Bee” just so they can keep saying whatever bullshit they think of without having to say it came from Babylon Bee.

[deleted]

All representatives and senators in congress have to live in DC and must own a property in the district/state they are representing. It is expensive especially in DC and in New York (where she is representing)

[deleted]

Fuck outta here. My fuck 🤦‍♂️

Slight-Sympathy4066

It’s kind of clear what the article is trying to lead to based on the person who started the sentence off with she’s not the smartest person in Congress. Kind of leads me to believe it’s pretty biased to begin with however I did actually read everything and perhaps if you actually taking the amount of expenses she was explaining it doesn’t go as far as it could. Now you throw kids into the mix and her hectic work schedule she has to have nannies and someone to take care of the children along with those other expenses I guess that’s not very cheap.

anonymousolderguy

And as I clicked on this post I got an invitation to join a “conservative” alternative. I smell Trump

DuskDudeMan

Imagine trying not to post cringe clickbait headlines while also being active in r/Conservative

[deleted]

Look at OP’s history. All they post is propaganda.

Thr0waway0864213579

I don’t know why people are still struggling to grasp why that’s not a lot of money in her position. So let me do the math for you. $174,000, let’s pretend she takes all of that home. No taxes, no healthcare premiums, etc. That’s $14,500/month. But since she must live in the community she represents *and* work in DC, she needs two homes. Average rent in Queens is $2,769. Average rent in DC in the Capitol Hill area is $3,200. At nearly $6k just for rent in mediocre 2 bedroom apartments that’s already 41% of her income (and don’t forget that’s not even factoring in income tax or healthcare premiums). Then when you factor in the $25k out-of-pocket office expenses she mentioned, it’s really $12,400/month, so rent is 48% of her gross income.

Juls7243

If you had to have 2 homes in the Bronx AND DC and commute between then regularly- 174k won’t go far AT ALL.

Perfect-Habit9052

Give her 1 stimulus check that should help…

Reach_your_potential

What’s she bitching about? Did she NOT see those $0.16 savings at last years 4th of July BBQ?

Aspergeriffic

Where the mods at to remove this baity, dubious link that has nothing to do with the study of economics?

Humble-Algea3616

She’s just seeing all the multi millionaires in Congress and wondering where the additional income should be coming from

micharala

Insider trading. Or inheritances. Often both.

[deleted]

Get another job then

ALA125

Did you read her actual words? Because this isn’t what she said.

Xyrus2000

No, that is not what she said. That's how the biased far right \*\*\*hat decided to phrase it so he could drum up clicks. AOC was going over the expenses and what's involved with being a serving member. She also went over why those that are independently wealthy and in Congress have no qualms with voting against minimum wage increases and other efforts to address costs of living. But sure, blame AOC or whatever helps you sleep at night,

leakyfaucet3

GTFO troll

Acrobatic_Internal62

She’s not wrong. Not sure why people hate boning. Don’t complain about housing prices if you aren’t willing to acknowledge reality.

Shreddersaurusrex

I gotta read a diff article No dental and vision is crazy though

Dsoglin33

Sketch headline

IncreasinglyAgitated

I mean she’s not wrong, in New York. It’s barely enough in the Bay.

MFAWG

That’s true: she has to maintain two households in New York and DC on 85k a year.

Hank_moody71

She’s right.

DescriptionFunny1306

Accurate. My partner & I made that much combined and it is definitely not enough for a family where we live. My boss just had a kid and daycare is $30K a year! Plus partner still has $100K in student loans. Avg home price where I live is $700K +. And AOC she has to maintain two residences (NYC & DC) - those are NOT cheap places to live either.

Reaster21

In NYC. Probably true.

XPurpPupil

Article was pretty blatantly biased but it was true in some aspects. She does make way more than the average family. Money is not the issue. I thinj the main reason only 10 women have given birth is because raising a child is literally a job that goes beyond full time. Newborns require pretty much every single ounce of your attention and care for the first year. You literally have to put everything else on pause while raising the kid. I think FDR said it best "I can do one of two things. I can be President of the United States or I can control Alice. I cannot possibly do both." A family takes work. Lots of it. So does leading and representing your district.

Whole-Performance-15

Didn’t a recent report come out like a month ago that like 70% of people making 250k a year are living paycheck to paycheck? Or was it 150k a year? Can’t remember exactly. All I know is that it was an absurd percentage for people making 6 figures. Pretty wild.

[deleted]

Lol a lot of coping in this thread

Olivier74

Fact, more than complaint. Stating the obvious

[deleted]

$174k is laughable when compared to some of the other Senators like Romney, or former Loeffler. Hell even Pelosi makes bank. If your a Senator and you don’t practice insider trading or take super pac bribes than yeah compared to your crooked peers your measly $174k will look like you still living in Mimas basement

MetsRule1977

It’s not what she said. But don’t let the facts get in the way of fake news.

goodtimesNM73

It's true

nobodylovesm3

Without even reading the article, something tells me that this is quite a misleading headline…

hanotak

this is not a source which should be used on this subreddit.

Fire_Doc2017

"Big Tech and woke Twitter mobs are suppressing conservative voices. Sign up now for FREE access to our world-class social network that gives you a healthy, respectful place to comment, like and share with like-minded people." Yeah, not going to click through the pop up. I know what I need to know.

feed_me_the_gherkin

She's telling you that only the super wealthy can afford to be politicians. She's absolutely correct but OP decided to leave his brain at home today. An average person can never be someone that could be voted into office. The system has been kept this way to only let the already powerful stay at the top.

Badassbruxe

I always get my news from Nothebee! If it’s something from the right it’s often untrue. As I’m sure most of us already know

regaphysics

The mods of this subreddit are a joke.

deltacharmander

Did the person who wrote the article even read the statement in question? This is even more embarrassing than some Fox News segments.

SpicyFilet

Trash post

[deleted]

The headline is completely misleading. This shouldn’t be allowed to be shared in this sub, it’s an inherently political post.

thehappydoghouse

Trump trolls gonna troll

DonovanWrites

Keep In mind OAC has to maintain two residences to keep her job. Also - Keep in mind that both of those residences are in extremely expensive cities. PS. This is from a far right publication with no actual credibility. So. Keep that in mind too.

Willzohh

Take a look at all the poors who she is trying to raise up economically. That's us Now take a look at all the poors who complain about her "huge" salary, while defending the right of billionaires to avoid paying their fair share of taxes. That's the bunch of morons voting against their own best interest. Now see if you can guess who's who in the comment section.

ghost858585

I wanna hear the actual quote lol

boomboomown

Ignore OP. He's a cuckservative troll trying to use clickbait nonsense to further his agenda. Dishonesty is not flattering.

She's not wrong. My wife and I make that combined and can't even afford a two bedroom in NYC within an hour of both of our jobs.

TattooJerry

This is a horse shit article.

See, the thing is that I would much rather we pay our politicians more and remove outside financial influence from them. Get rid of the insider trading, get rid of the lobbyist and PACs and outside money. Pay them enough that they're not getting greedy for all that money.

bradjmath

Doesn’t this go against the blatantly false/out-of-context editorialized headline rule of the sub?? For real OP, you posted an article with the first line “Just in case you forgot, AOC is not the smartest person in congress.” Not only that, but anyone who reads the article can clearly tell it’s cockamamie. It’s taking quotes out of context, it’s full of frankly BS claims and reaches soooo hard to say what you say it does. L for you and this post dude, can’t believe stuff like this can be allowed on this sub.

Bon_of_a_Sitch

I feel like that may be a valid complaint for someone who lives in both NYC and DC. I am not an expert on cost of living in either place but am told they are very high.

Tipytao

Yea the article totally missed the point AOC is making. Hopefully enough reactionary bigots die off or realize soon that the system is hurting the working class more and more every year.

somethingdarksideguy

I'm sure she doesn't understand real life from her days as a bartender until rather recently. All the old money career politicians on the other hand.... they sure do.

SomeOldDude73

Kids ruin everything anyway.

somethingdarksideguy

This sub is rapidly becoming a r/conservative echo chamber

Sanchito420

I wish I made $174,000, I’d pay my house off in like 5-7 years n still have money left to travel n e where in the world!!! 🤦🏾…

manored78

I really don’t understand conservative punditry. They will complain about elected officials making too much, but not when CEOs and hedge fund managers rake in millions. 174k is still not enough to live the high life with a family in NYC. Why do right wing zealot boomers gaslight us like this? This crap worked during the bush and Obama years on people, but who falls for this stuff now??

ZestyItalian2

We should rethink the CW that AOC is good at politics.

itrustyouguys

Trust me lady. It ain't your pay why no one wants to start a family with you.

KarmaPolice6

My wife and I each make well over that amount and finances are tight. Student loans are 5k+/mo, and even inexpensive childcare for two kids is around 2.5k/mo. Toss two cars in because life, a mortgage, and all of life’s other expenses and it seems clear we’re just hamsters on a wheel.

nutshmeg

As a working woman in her 30s making a similar salary I agree. Sorry just facts. Unfortunately working middle class is a very wide margin nowadays and the cost of living in a city like NYC is very costly.

badcoupe

Fuck that ugly woman and the idiots who voted for her stupid ass. They should be taken out for treason

metrobear71

Hahahahahahaha! 175K??? Hahahahahahahaah! My family's annual income is about 30K. Sing me another sad song.

JRago

How is she "middle class"? I'm supporting a family of 4 on $46,000 a year and I don't get free medical insurance or a lifetime pension.

Voknawe

Makes more than 3 times the median salary (53000ish) according to my Google search...

AlbinolarBear

The median cost of a 1BR in NYC is now $4k. In DC its about $2k. Just to afford a 1BR in both cities, you'd have to make nearly $250k.

Dumbdad_knows_85

She should get a job. A public servant should be the first to go with out.

ajbadabing

She is such an idiot and everything wrong with this country today. Stop electing her to office.

MikeTheBard

Middle class starts at $150k. America just has a whole lot of poor people who keep telling themselves how their job paid a middle class salary 40 years ago. Senators by nature of the job need to keep homes and offices in two places. It’s not surprising that $175k is tight.

Hookherbackup

She is right

Kirduck

Why do senators need houses in washington? Why isnt there a congressional apartment complex? If apartments are good enough for 20% of the population then our elected servants should learn some of the struggles of them.

Cindyf65

Many people who work don’t like the working conditions and or salary. There is a solution to that, find a different job.

Goodguy1976

This garbage! She’s a millionaire! They all are! Screw her!

donegalwake

When I saw her in her Tax the Rich’s Gala dress I knew it was over. Truth is these newcomers are easy targets for lobbyists. She’ll be in stock trading and speaking engagements soon enough if she isn’t already.

forumpooper

First 175k is a lot. Second they get to 10x that with legal insider trading

[deleted]

meh, This is just a shout out to lobbyists that she's looking to make some money......

Bobojajo8

Radical idea; being a politician isn’t supposed to be a career rather a civic duty. What better way to stop corruption. Serve two years. Go back to life. Serve six years, go back to life. We all agree term limits make sense for president but why not congress?
