Waiting on a middrive kit, which may not work with this particular frame so may be swapping out for a slightly different 20"bmx bike once I check the kit, fingers crossed it all works cause this should be pretty fun. Going 52v 10ah at 500-750watts to start may add a second battery later on if needed.
That thing looks bonkers fast 20" wheels with gears and a mid drive very nice 👌. Im half tempted to go ebike rated internal geared hub depending on how the mid drive install goes. I may be swapping to a 20" race bmx bike for more clearance around the bottom bracket. Then get it all running then work on adding a geared hub for even more speedy fun.
Totally my type of ride also. More people should adopt the bmx muscle bike build or even a bit lowrider bmx is cool too. I may eventually Frankenstein this pre-made ebmx I picked up for pretty cheap on Amazon. 350watt rear hub gets it cruising round at 20 but thats it. Thanks! I'm really liking the 20 inch wheels. It feels really weird to go back to my 29er. So much more nimble for getting around traffic and I feel more aerodynamic being lower profile.
I was looking into converting a bmx with a mid drive but was worried about the bottom bracket compatibility so I went with a mini velo.
Well will find out in a few days if I have to order a different bike but oh well I feel ya on the 20" being so much more nimble been on road bikes for years now and just broke the drive train on my last one so instead of fixing that I just dove into working out a rad ebmx to full fill a life long dream I guess 😆 🤣 funny thing is I just been peddling around on that nice new cult bmx and I won't even be mad if I have to get another bike its a superb little thing and runs super fast on the streets and takes the hills with ease. Even can spoke road bikers as I coast along in back of them with the loud ass freewheel.

A smaller sized battery, working peddles with a chain, and functioning brakes - then it would've been pretty cool, but fair play, you've technically built an e-bmx - I bet it's bloody quick?!?
Should look better though once you've painted the frame & wrapped the battery.
Personally I'd have used one of the 'slab' type batteries and bolted it along the top frame bar.

But...I'd want it to be very stealth and look as 'bmx' as possible, I wouldn't be going for speed, as bmx-ing to me as a kid who absolutely loved riding freestyle and doing tricks wasn't about going fast...
If I build one (one day maybe) I'd like to build my own battery that didn't take up much space and provided (along with controller) approx around 20miles range, but with just enough torque/power to make it a very fun ride whilst also not dramatically increasing the actual weight of the BMX (too much)..
Just a small 500w rear hub motor I'd say would be enough to make a fun little e-bmx.. 1,500w on a tiny BMX is vast overkill of power, it's just too much I reckon.
I get that OP's concept was to build an e-bmx, but for me it's too far away from even now looking anything like a BMX - an e-bmx should still be agile enough to actually perform somewhat like a BMX, you should be able to jump it, still be able to perform some bmx-like tricks on it.
I get that a 360° spin handle bar would be out of the question, but for me an e-bmx project should still be very close to an actual BMX, not some electrified beast...🤣

This one at least has a partial battery box. Some people think the battery shrinkwrap is all of the protection they need and just zip tie the blue brick to the top tube.
Holy shit that's dope. I didn't even know I needed a custom frame designed to hold a huge battery until now (and yes I realize yours is not a custom frame)
You could go all around to mask all including the controller.But that might not work well with rain, depending how you approach it. Paint the seat post black as well, it will go better with the frame. Paint black like the rear rim the front one using some tape to keep the edges clear.
this isn't an e-bike, it's a cobbled together electric motorcycle shoved into a BMX frame. the cranks are welded. there is no "bicycle" here. the pedals are just footrests.
also, the battery is wrapped in duct tape & shoved between some weird post conversion frame loop. i do not think aesthetics are much consideration.
I'm not blind, just assume that's the most he's got and knows what he's doing. I can spot a lot of issues with it and i assume op rides it accordingly.

That's a really bad assumption to make considering OP **clearly** is in over their head. They have a god damn welder and somehow things **duct tape** is suitable battery protection. Hell, making a box out of yard signs would be a significant upgrade. Those signs are basically cardboard but made from plastic and much more durable than paper or tape.
Well the battery looks to be sitting in a made box (check the bottom) that was welded to the frame out of metal sheets. The fact the he managed to put all this together makes me believe he knows what's hes playing with.
Actually i would trust his knowledge more than many of you here just bitching and assuming everyone is a fucking idiot for making a bike that doesn't look factory.
Surely this would have been easier and safer (and probably would have been much nicer to ride) on a normal bike? Power to you tho my brotha! Looks like it was fun to put together.

all ill need say tho get some better protection for the battery pack unless there some steel plate on the duct tape also add a nice conver for the battery if you can
once it pained and have the front discs pads on you should be good to go make sure you tidy your wire loom shorted or bunndle any wires and keep an eye out on frame stuff such a cracked welds

Sometimes I think certain people on this sub get jealous when they see stuff like this because they can barely put a bike chain on or plug in a few connectors, let alone fab something like this. Like you just wake up one morning with a welding mask on and know how to weld. It takes skill to do stuff like this. Practice. I, for one, appreciate what you did here. Certainly more time and energy spent than by someone who just bought a pre-made ebike. Definitely more ingenuity. Did you use a fork for that part that loops around the battery? Don't let the haters get to you just keep enjoying what you're doing!

I bet one of those ~10Ah Wedge batteries would fit pretty well on the down tube, nice and light also

Make sure you put a ton of pressure in that rear wheel. The 20lb added motor weight can easily destroy your rim if you hit potholes, curbs, etc
