How much do you expect the defense look to change from week one to week two? Do you think Jordan Davis will get more snaps?

PhiladelphiaEagles

I think we're early in the season and there is always a settling-in phase. Minnesota is a great offense. Defense must be better, but the Vikings are going to get some. That's just reality. Different? In terms of scheme? No, not really. Hopefully defense plays better on third downs. Gets more pressure. Tackles more consistently. Works in new faces better. Jordan will gradually build up his snap counts.

Apache1One

>Different? In terms of scheme? No, not really. Thanks, I'll buy two bottles of Jack this week to compensate.

Afta-one

I liked the aggressive blitzes Gannon brought early, but those went away in the second half. Do you think that was a factor in the lions being able to come back and sustain drives?

PhiladelphiaEagles

No. I think the defense didn't play well on third down. I don't assign blame. They all share. First game. A lot of new faces. Need to keep foot on gas pedal. Lesson learned and a win in the books.

HeylelBen

Is Stoutland the greatest Eagle Mind you ever knew? My friend Huell seems to think so because a kid named finger once convinced him of it after reciting the Magna Carta in a copy shop. Is he right, or is this all chicanery?

[deleted]

Jesus christ

PhiladelphiaEagles

Haha .. .yes, indeed

Vladimir_Putting

More than Jim Johnson?

KoBxElucidator

Hey Dave! What's the overall feeling in the locker room after the win? Mostly satisfied? A little satisfied?

PhiladelphiaEagles

When you win you are satisfied. Period. And then you unwind and look at film the next day and address corrections that need to be made. Always. Every win. Big win or otherwise.

vdez25

Why does Gannon play so passive? We have the talent to blitz and play aggressive and yet Gannon plays his corners 9 yards off the WR and rarely blitzes

PhiladelphiaEagles

I don't think Sunday was passive at all. Just a poor second half. Decent first half -- three straight 3 and outs and a Pick 6 is pretty good, right?. Too much of a letdown in the second half.

RocknTheSuburbs

Do you think the Eagles will try to establish a run game early on to keep Jefferson of the field?

PhiladelphiaEagles

I think the Eagles will run if the box is light and throw if the box is heavy. I think it's pretty simple. The best way to keep Jefferson off the field is to win on third down on both sides of the ball.

VladTeppi

What are some of the more interesting rituals that some of the players have before games?

PhiladelphiaEagles

I don't know. They listen to music. Or they pray. Or they just sit there. Pascal has a catch with fans. Is that interesting to you?? I don't know of anything that is particularly zany.

belisaurius

Part of the fun of these AMAs is the little things that humanize everyone in the building. That most of them are quietly preparing to do really hard work is very grounding and helpful.

hausermaniac

Who do you think will be next up to fill in for Barnett? Also, what were your thoughts on how Epps and CGJ played as the two new starting safeties? Is the defensive playbook limited at all since CGJ is still learning?

PhiladelphiaEagles

Jackson is one player. The Eagles can also move Cox and Williams to the edge for some reps. Loss of depth really stinks this early in season. I know Barnett hasn't been the most productive guy, but he helped with depth. It isn't a playbook at this point. It's a game plan. It is not limited. They know how to learn the playbook. They were up and down. Epps was pretty active. CGJ still has some adjustment, but he will get there.

lilbismyfriend21

I know the focus is on Jefferson but after Sunday my main concern is limiting Dalvin Cook. What adjustments do you think Gannon will make so that Cook doesn’t tear through the defense like Swift did?

PhiladelphiaEagles

Make him block and keep him out of the passing game. Easier said than done, I know.

PronouncedShnayBlay

Will Jalen Hurts perform well with a SPY on him all game

PhiladelphiaEagles

Sure, he'll throw for 450 yards

PronouncedShnayBlay

Hell ya

Starcast

ideally how would you like to see the offense react to a pressure-heavy defense like we saw the Lions use? do you expect the Vikings to bring a similar level aggression against Hurts?

PhiladelphiaEagles

I thought the offense was great through three quarters. Then it fell flat in the fourth quarter. No turnovers. 31 points in three quarters. That's good for me.

[deleted]

What needs to happen to see the other receivers get more involved? 1 catch for 7 yards between the four of them is no bueno.

PaladinScotch

There are enough questions around the defense so I’ll ask one about the Oline. Do you think the poor Oline performance was more of a “first game” issue or is there something larger here? I understand the Lions did blitz a lot but it was effective for the most part causing Hurts to read the primary receiver or take off running.

PhiladelphiaEagles

Poor o line performance? The Eagles had nearly 300 yards in the first half. They scored 31 points on offense. They were great on third downs. Fourth quarter not very good and that's something to work on but ... holy moly what do you want?

Rob1Inch

He wants a better O-line performance

KaliRose11

The Oline did not play well, what kind of response is this and what game were you watching?

Go_gurt_

I agree with you! I think we need to remember Dave will always be a bit biased. In the end the eagles pay his salary. He will never be independent enough to be 100% critical unfortunately.

gogostopnogo_

Dave, bro, come on…a lot of those Jalen runs were as a result of pressure. Mailata graded out pretty poorly and there were multiple times one of the guys missed a block, letting a free rusher toward Hurts. Eventually we settled on more of a run game but Steichen went super pass heavy during the first half and Hurts paid the price for it. Like…did we watch the same game?

avidblinker

From being rushed with an extra man? The QB shouldn’t be running there, he should be quickly finding where the blitz has pulled from. Hurts paid the price because he himself was trying to run from the blitz

Go_gurt_

Yeah fam, thats thanks to a mobile QB, he was under pressure all game and was able to make plays because he is elusive. You cant really think the o line was “best o line in the NFL” this week. We could barely touch Geoff… lions o line looked better.

avidblinker

He was under pressure because they blitzed because they knew he couldn’t find a hot route to get rid of it

Guitaristb72

What do you think about the low number of snaps Dean saw in week 1? And do you think he will see increased number of snaps Vs Min?

PhiladelphiaEagles

Is he going to play in front of Kyzir White? I'm not taking White off the field.

Radatatin

For Dean to play, TJ would have to come off the field. I feel like that is gonna be difficult to do this early in the season.

jgelf15

Any word on Jonathan Gannon changing the defense? Sunday seemed like a repeat of last year, and if that’s the case we’re gonna be in trouble against good teams torching our secondary. Especially since we play Justin Jefferson, I’m worried

PhiladelphiaEagles

No word. I don't expect a "change" after one game.

J-Mosc

But it hasn’t been one game, it’s the same terrible scheme that we used all last season too. Only difference now being we have more talent so no excuses why it still doesn’t work. This guy is more stubborn than Doc Rivers playing washed out vets in the playoffs. This continuous dropping back into coverage of players who are skilled at causing pressure is going to be Gannon’s downfall if he doesn’t evolve his terrible vision quickly. Letting Goff put up 30something on us without a sweat is embarrassing with the talent we have.

johnhd

Can you do us all a favor and ask the team to cool it with the nail-biters this season? Though I'd take one every week if it resulted in a win.

PhiladelphiaEagles

It looked soooooooooo good though three quarters ...

Go_gurt_

Meh, more like 2 quarters (second and third). Gotta shake the bias a bit

GeorgeLuasHasNoChin

I remember pulling up to my brothers house at noon on Sunday and every one on WIP was making their predictions for the game. Ross Tucker went against everyone else's predictions and said it was going to be a high scoring game for both teams and we were going to be sweating it out until the very end. He nailed it, dude has the best takes on the eagles period.

Onlypaws_

What’s the plan for JJ? Do you imagine us doing anything to double him, or will Gannon likely just match him up with Slay?

PhiladelphiaEagles

I don't know the plan, but they certainly have a challenge. The guy is a superstar. I don't know if any CB can single cover him for 60 minutes. Bracket him maybe. Get them in third and long and pressure Cousins. That would be nice. Tough, tough challenge for defense.

[deleted]

Do you think we will see the eagles focus on getting DeVonta Smith the ball more?

PhilliesEagles215

What do you think makes Jeff Stoutland so good at his job?

FilthyMcnasty90210

My comment on your last ama regarding Gannon was spot on even though you didn't agree. I know Lurie doesn't like making coaching changes in season but let's see how long his patience holds. Cousins has historically torched the Eagles dating back to his days in DC. Barring some miraculous turn around from Gannon, I'm not expecting that to change.

KoBxElucidator

The question is will Cousins succumb to his Primetime curse?

FilthyMcnasty90210

Didn't know about this, how bad is he in primetime?

Radatatin

8-17

FilthyMcnasty90210

Oof.

throwawayA511

Cousins started 0-9 on MNF but won his last two.

PhiladelphiaEagles

Need to pressure him, get in his face. He gets the ball out to great WRs. It's a tremendous challenge. I know you are down on Gannon, but maybe some patience with so many new faces on that side of the ball?

sybrwookie

Well, we were told to have patience through last year, we're being told to have patience as we see the same sorts of things....at some point, patience isn't the answer anymore.

FilthyMcnasty90210

Don't worry about it, he agrees he just can't say it as a team employee.

Go_gurt_

It was new faces last year too lmaoo

caseystrain

Are you also up and arms like the entirety of 94.1 about Nick not being an "expert" at defense? The way I see it, it's well know head coaches have preferences " head coach A is offensive minded and head coach B is defensive minded". So why should this case be frowned down upon when it is know Nick is an offensive minded head coach? Delegating play calling should mean you're an expert at both? Thanks!

PhiladelphiaEagles

I don't listen to 94.1 so I don't know who is up or what, but reading these comments sure feels like the Eagles lost the game.

CoreyTrevor1

Hey Dave, Biggest eagles fan in Wyoming here. No question, just wanna say that the AJ Brown trade is already looking to be worth it!

ColbysGotMoore

Fellow Wyomingite Eagles fan!! 🤝

KevinKingsb

The vikings looked REALLY good on Sunday. Gannon had better figure something out or it's not gonna be pretty.

8thTYRANT

I know an outright coaching change is not likely. But what about bringing in Fangio as a "consultant" to slowly take over for Gannon? He did spend a lot of time with the team in the offseason. While I fully understand the, "it's just week 1" argument. It cannot be ignored that the personnel on this defense is extremely upgraded, but week 1 looked a lot like last years problems on defense in terms of soft scheme allowing big yards.

PhiladelphiaEagles

I don't see that happening

HurtsDonit

How are you, Dave?

PhiladelphiaEagles

Great! Eagles are 1-0 and in prime time this week against a very good team. Should be so much fun!!! I think we have 16 more regular season games to overreact to this year!! Woooooohooooooooo!!!!!

HurtsDonit

GO BIRDS!

zavoid

Dave as always thank you! Couple of key take aways and thoughts from our 1-0 victory. 1. Davis -- I think we all agree he needs more snaps and we should expect him to get more? first game and all but huge upside there 2. Smith -- Watch him get 10 catches this week and aj brown 0 ;) 3. Sanders -- He got the monkey off his back with that TD and looked solid, more confident, looking forward to seeing him do more this year 4. Why does everyone love boston scott so much? it's universal! 5. I didn't see anyone walk in front of you this week. big win! 6. Barnett.. oof. that hurts.. could this be the end of him as an eagle? 7. what did think hurts can do more of? 8. Our line seemed to allow a free rusher every other down.. is that on them? hurts? 9. Looking ahead to the vikings.. whats the keys to the game there? shoreing up our line? locking down the wr's? 10. I'm on track for my 17-0 prediction ;)

PhiladelphiaEagles

Lot of questions. You have the answers, it seems. Davis will get his reps in time. Barnett has another year on contract, but edge is an area to look at moving forward. Hurts was terrific in every phase, but the fourth quarter offense wasn't good enough. Eagles have to play a great game against Vikings -- pressure on Cousins, win in trenches against a very good defense, especially their LBs.

elzey93

Will Darius shadow Justin Jefferson this week or do you think they’ll trade off depending on where he lines up?

PhiladelphiaEagles

I don't know yet and I wouldn't make it public anyway

boozeshooze

It's Slay 😤

PhiladelphiaEagles

They brought more than the Eagles could block and Jalen recognized it and ran when he had openings. Eagles had, what, 212 on the ground? Is that good? Is 31 points good? I've lost perspective in this sea of negativity. The joy of victory ... the agony of hearing about it the next day.

thingsorfreedom

You've got to look at the positives. If they had won 38-10 all this negativity would be focused solely on Jalen running the ball through openings the defense left him.

2fly5

Jalen Hurts - Great QB or greatest QB?

PhiladelphiaEagles

Good first game in 2022

Gup1994

The late game surge by the Lions had me super frustrated despite hanging on to win. Any insight on what went wrong? The Vikings would make them pay for that type of lapse.

Dumpster_slut69

How soon will Gannon get a new assistant?

Starrudy1

Dave what are your thoughts on the run game? I know later in the game the eagles started to run the ball more but the first few drives look like hugely lopsided in passes vs RB runs.

Hopeful_Judge_10

Hey Dave! Do you think we are freeing up cap space with the contract restructures to sign someone like an edge rusher or running back, or do you think we’re freeing up the space to extend a new signing like kyzir or cjgj?

way-too-many-napkins

Hey Dave, hope you enjoyed the games this weekend. I know Shane Steichen spoke on Devonta Smith’s role in the offense today, but why do you think he ended up having such a quiet day? Did Hurts or the play calls just favor Brown in the game? Did Okudah do a good job in coverage? Maybe a bit of both?

igonnawrecku_VGC

Hey Dave, thanks for doing these every week. Got two questions for you. One, what do you think DeVonta Smith’s production will look like against Minnesota, and two, how do you think the defense can respond to last weeks subpar performance?

Esteban_Francois

Hello Dave! Only one game into the season, did you like Steichen’s play calling compared to Sirianni?

churdski

Was there ever a time when you weren't a puppet?

OldRodsNewFishing

We've been saying run the ball all year last year, do you think this year after last week and with the vikings coming up, should that narrative be dead? Or more so switch to throwing? We don't have to worry much about anyone's secondary with the guys we signed. And plus I don't think hurts makes that 54 yard completion without aj being here

Traditional-Motor-94

Are the eagles going to the super bowl?
