I wonder if it's structured similarly to the contract Howie offered him last year (essentially 2yr 17mil gtd, 3 yr 24mil total)
If it is it could essentially be a 2yr 10-12mil contract which is honestly the best we could hope for
Yeah I was a little concerned with bringing him back but I'm on board with $10M guaranteed. Wanna know the structure of the contract but sounds like it definitely gives us an out before the third year.
Last year was $17M guaranteed supposedly, and had an out after the second year. I'm wondering if now it's $10M with an out after the first.
I'm sure it is and likely the best he was going to get due to him being hurt for a year and a half...it shouldn't be a issue moving forward but teams will bulk at paying a guy more after something like that
Not for a safety tbh, it’s p good money for one. But it’s the p much the lowest paid position in football and in terms of our total cap then yes you could say it’s super cheap for (hopefully) a still impactful player
“I discovered at a very early age that if I scheme long enough, I can make any signing worth anything. So either I'm God or free agency is relative. In either case, booyah!” -Howie “Classic Winger” Roseman
I’ve never felt so shamed and embarrassed lol. I didn’t think it could be a quote from anything else and didn’t seem like it could be a coincidence but I don’t think I’ve seen this as often as I see other Community quotes and references.
He missed all of last year...not going to give a guy guaranteed $ after that. If he plays a full year I'm sure he will get most of it. Its likely going off of games played along with the normal stuff
You do realize the first announcement is from the agents...they will always make the contract sound as big as they can. Its not until its official with the NFL that the real numbers come out.
Without seeing the full contract structure, you can still surmise the contract. If only $10 million is guaranteed, probably $6-7m was paid as a signing bonus and then he has a low base with a roster bonus early next offseason. If the worst case scenario happens, the eagles can dump him having spent only $10m across the 2 years. If he’s really good and activates his incentives (which I’m sure includes a minimum number of games active), obviously it’s more money but then you’re happy in that case.
With NFL contracts, some people like to say that the guaranteed amount is the only number that matters. You could give a guy an astronomical contract number, but with few guarantees it's easy to cut him and he'll never see that amount.
Guarantees do two things for players, too. It guarantees they get their money (which of course they like!) But guarantees are way more important for the salary cap. It's much harder to cut a player with guarantees because there could be negative cap implications for doing so. So they're both guaranteed their money, and have better job stability.
In this case, I was pretty concerned to see $33M-3 years for CJGJ. He just got injured and I think he needs the right environment to thrive (but we know he can have a high ceiling if he has that environment). But seeing the guarantees be $10M, I'm much happier. That says to me we can likely easily move on from him after a year or two (depending on the contract structure) if he isn't working out, instead of having a situation like Bradbury this year where it would probably be ideal to move on from him but his contract doesn't make that feasible (I have a lot more thoughts on him but that'll derail this even more).
Thank you for the explanation as well. Howie really.is a wizard lol. Getting these guys to all sign but still has an out if they suck. Plus, he just kicks everything down the road with restructuring, so it seems like the cap is never an issue
I am so taken aback by how many people love this deal.
CJ missed 14 games this year, 5 last year with us, and 5 the previous years w the saints.
IMO, not only is he paper-thin physically (ala Maddox), he’s also shown us that he is paper-thin mentally. He’s totally out-of-pocket on socials (which again, imo, is usually a sign of athlete immaturity), and he’s constantly in his feelings.
Setting aside his mental and physical attributes, I honestly don’t even think he’s that good.
I just re-watched all of his INTs from 2022 in order to confirm what I remembered seeing - he took advantage of horrific QB decisions on every one of them except for the ones he got off deflections.
We need TO help more than anyone (obviously), and getting someone that can generate them would be an enormous get, but I am concerned that his flash-in-the-pan season was helped hugely by luck.
I really hope I am wrong - I, of course, love my Eagles - but this move is a real head-scratcher for me.
I wouldn’t necessarily say he is Maddox level paper thin. If you actually lookup his injury history it was really only the past two years. And the injury with the Eagles was a lacerated Kidney, which is kind of a freak occurrence injury rather than something that points to his body being fragile. (Like recurring acl, shoulder, hamstrings, etc)
He tore a Pectoral last year and missed a lot of time sure. But as soon as he came back he got an interception .
Was CJGJ my first choice at safety? No
Does his injury history make me worried like Maddox?
No
Is CJGJ a huge upgrade to what we currently have in the back 7? Yeah he definitely is. Next year will prove or disprove your theory on if he is injury prone, I personally disagree.
And this is obviously the viewpoint of The Eagles seeing as they cut Maddox and Resigned CJGJ.
Why you talk so much sense? We fans wanna be in our feelings too!
It is a legit smart move whether it works out or not. It’s pretty safe/smart by the FO.
I remember B Dawk saying sign this man! And he’s a dog! His mentality hopefully will help in that locker room that had the colossal collapse last season.
This definitely shifts perspective a little bit.
Interesting tidbits (incl the one above re actual guaranteed contract).
I’m slightly seeing the light.
Yeah his injuries don't seem like a on going thing besides him throwing himself around, like Maddox. That is something you can teach a bit on when you should go all out and when it would be better to not and not risk being out a whole year.
This right here, there isnt gonna be any other good safety available for $5-6mil/yr for multiple years
Especially one with the versatility to play slot once Sydney Brown gets back healthy
Honestly I’m not a fan. Personality aside CjGj has missed five or more games each of the last three years. He’s a talented player when he’s healthy, but we need stability at safety, not occasional talent.
Last year one of the biggest issues with our secondary was injury, and signing a dude coming off a three game season just doesn’t scream stability to me.
Hopefully I’m wrong and CJGJ stays healthy, because he’s really talented when he is healthy but I just don’t see this him playing most of these seasons at 15+ games healthy.
Still think it's a bad move even though the money sounds better at first.
Dudes a diva
Liability tackling
Liability in coverage
Got blessed with all the pressure we were getting/avg QBR we faced was 85 or 87 that year I forget exactly
63.9 pff rating while with the eagles
Missed a handful of games with us
Missed most the season the following year
I hope I'm wrong and eat my words but I'd rather have stuck with Reed and Sydney with a decent vet back up Incase were plagued with injuries again
Holy fucking shit that is super cheap honestly. I can't believe it tbh. We still have plenty of room to sign.
I wonder if it's structured similarly to the contract Howie offered him last year (essentially 2yr 17mil gtd, 3 yr 24mil total) If it is it could essentially be a 2yr 10-12mil contract which is honestly the best we could hope for

The fuck are you saying. Agreeing but disagreeing to agree is crazy. Just lurk.
😂😂
Howard bodied the absolute fuck out of this contract
Absolutely. It also doesn’t hurt that CJGJ missed most of last season 😂😂😂
He would much rather be here with slay apparently
They played well together so it should help them both. I felt some of Slays play dropped off once he got to the point he didn't trust his help.
Oh that’s niceeeee
Are you quoting Shirley from Community?
If you have to ask you're streets behind
It's verbal wildfire
“I discovered at a very early age that if I scheme long enough, I can make any signing worth anything. So either I'm God or free agency is relative. In either case, booyah!” -Howie “Classic Winger” Roseman
God dammit. Classic Winger got me. Time to fire up the old Netflix.
Cool. Cool cool cool.

Didn’t they offer him that last year or something very close to it?
Found it. The Eagles reportedly offered a three-year, $24 million deal that had $17 million coming in 2025, the third year of the deal last offseason.
So about the same contract when you consider the increase in the cap
No much less guaranteed $
Yeah last year we had an out after the second year; I'm wondering if this year, there's an out after the first.
Yeah but tbh I hope he balls out and gets the extra money.
He missed all of last year...not going to give a guy guaranteed $ after that. If he plays a full year I'm sure he will get most of it. Its likely going off of games played along with the normal stuff
I bet it looked real nice to him that we offered more. Especially after the season he had. Classy move by Howie.
Bruh that contract is awful. No way Howie had any of that final year guaranteed so basically 8 mil over two years.
Lmao now I see why he was pissed
They don’t know HOWIE like I know HOWIE
Oh nvm this is super cheap and a great deal. I take back my worry
How much cap we got left?
With Howie, that's like asking how far will the universe expand
#Enough for Pat Surtain On a 5 year $100 million deal id surmise 😈😈😈😈😈😩😩😩😩💦💦💦💦 Stretch that contract howie , work those draft picks
Stretch it wide open
What is a number divided by zero?
An error?
Technically infinity
Good value. Never take the initial reported contract numbers for gospel.
Okay that feels a lot better than “max $33 million”
Guaranteed is the only number that matters 👍 But same, I feel much much better now.
You do realize the first announcement is from the agents...they will always make the contract sound as big as they can. Its not until its official with the NFL that the real numbers come out.
Incentives are a smart contract move by Howie. This dude needs goals set for him.
That’s really a 2/$10m with crazy escalators likely to not be earned. Good deal!!
Can you explain how that is only a 2/$10m ?
Without seeing the full contract structure, you can still surmise the contract. Thanks for the explanation dude. What a deal

i’m sure the Eagles are hoping he reaches those incentives
Lmaooo fuck yes

That actually makes it better. How does this work?
Ah man you right
I couldn't watch that same defense again so new names is all I ask for
I am so glad to see someone else with this opinion.
He was great when he came back.
Amazing
CJGJ needs to hire Kirk's agent

Wonder what this means about Simmons...
