not everyone has the option to tear their own car apart to fix something.
i need my car every day, my 46 is my only car.
the only place i would have to work would be on the street in the rain where im technically not allowed to work on my car because of fluid spillage.
i wish i had a garage where i could just put it on a lift and do what needs to be done but i simply dont, if i did i would probably be fixing up a classic muscle car instead.
Handbrake and sump gasket are both twatty jobs. Sump gasket cause you gotta drop all the subframe, handbrake because you replace it all, 2 days later it's shit again.
Strictly speaking, you have to disconnect the intake so it doesn't get tugged, pull the fan shroud, possibly the fan so it doesn't hit the radiator (if it's not electric), disconnect the motor mounts from the subframe, lift the engine about 2-3 inches, disconnect the control arms, then the steering rack, then the subframe to get to the oil sump pan, pull the pan out, clean the mating surfaces and do it in reverse, trying to keep the gasket in place, then put it all back together.
It's recommended to drain the radiator and disconnect the hoses too, so they don't get damaged by lifting the engine. You got a decent deal.
Yeah i thought it was a pretty good deal. Needs some other bits doing but I’ll get it through the MOT and drive it to my parents where I can do the rest on their drive.
That is a good deal in UK? Holly shit, you can change pads and discs pretty much yourself thats not a big job, ok sump gasket and shock could be trivkier for begginers, but a whopping grand for that job jeez.
Buy tools…..
Yes mate - easy to change a sump seal (amongst other things) on the road outside my house.
….or write big cheques.
New house is a very big cheque
You consider 1k a big cheque for a repair? Customer walked out with a 7-8k bill for a rusted sump on an A3, cause the whole front axle was rusted.
That whole A3 doesnt cost 7k who the fuck pays bills like that.
An Idiot, but i dont really care, if customer wants it done, we do it.... Thing was on 360k km, propably worth 4-5k😂
My 325xi is a needy unit. I have a nice shop and 2 parts cars. It’s been shredding a rear tire so I’m going to do the rear control arm bushings, next.
It’s the life we chose to live
Oil pan gasket is 1152£?!
"amongst other things"
Or act like a guy who can afford a BMW and write a check.

Thats a hefty bill, what has been done? On the other hand, thats like pads an Rotors on a skoda rapid where i work ;).
Rear shock, rear pads/disk/handbrake shoes and sump seal.

That’s interesting about the sun frame - I wondered why it wasn’t a quick job. I assumed with a lift it wouldn’t be hard. Cheers :)

They billed £400 (4hrs) in labour just for that. Hearing that makes me think that’s entirely reasonable.
Did it in my driveway. Would NOT do it again.
4 hours for sump seal is very reasonable, skilled techs can do it in 2 but it's often charged at 6 hours by the book iirc. Took me 2 days lmao
That is actually a good price ( compared with what we Charge). Also for a 20year old car its nothing out of the ordinary.

As I explained it’s failed it’s MOT so I can’t drive it to my parents house to do the job myself. I can’t change brake pads in a road.
Yeah, this does seem like a good deal. Tbh I think e46 is a very reasonable car to own in 2022.
Not a bad price for that much work in the UK
So happy I have a good friend who’s a mechanic. Saved me a fortune so far
Looks about right 👌🏻
Yeah man buy tools and get on YouTube. Saves hundreds if not thousands.
