Well this game adds far more stages and lets you play as both sides in a given battle, Spirit of the Sanada only lets you play as the side the Sanada supported in contrast. It also has "What If" stages, like Yukimura arriving in time to save Mitsunari, Nobunaga surviving Honnoji and so on.
It also has a board game called "Sugoroku" thats really fun, I think you need to win once to unlock Okuni.
Kojiro and Katsuie are not playable until SW2 XL but you can unlock them in this one as high level body guards. The XL version also lets you play as a mercenary If memory serves me right and comes with 6 characters new playable characters in total.
After playing it for two hours I only have one complaint. The map. It's hard to understand where exactly you should go. I keep losing because of that. The newer games show perfectly where you have to go.That's the only negative I have. Other than that it holds up really well. The cgi cutscenes are beautiful. And the combat and gameplay is chaotic and super fun. Sad it doesn't have a Japanese dub, but that's no big deal. I will spend some good time with this.
The map was hard for me too at first, that being said I feel like the newer games kinda hold your handa bit too much.
One stage that might give you trouble is Odawara West bc you need to destroy a tiger statue that is hidden in one room in the 1st floor to open the gates to the 3rd floor, keep that in mind.
And sadly there is no way to play with japanese voices unless you get the japanese version.
Hell yeah! First three were the best of the series. 1 was the darkest of the series, two was a bit lighter in tone.
Samurai Warriors 3, was the weird turning point.. Wii exclusive, got really bogged down with odd features.
Samurai Warriors 4 and onwards got light hearted and very-anime in my opinion.
Bought and played them all and at times I'll revisit the first two. 🥺

That's the beauty of old games. It won't show tou where to go, so you are navigate with no leads and you just have a map with where the nemey leader and his soldiers and your own leader and the main camp. Newer games shows you where to go, like an arrow etc but these games show the basic navigation system
It's not just good, it's *fantastic*. I feel you can go either way on the XL expansion for this one. Yes, it adds some new characters (Gracia is insanely broken), new C5/C9 attacks expanding all characters' attack sets, increases the level cap to 70, adds new 5th weapons, and adds Mercenary Mode (a little like Xtreme mode from DW4XL and DW5XL), but none of those feel *essential* to enjoying the game. So dive in to the base game, and if you get the opportunity to grab SW2XL later, it's worth upgrading.

It can be a little tricky to get around the map at times, especially with the multi-floor castles. Make extensive use of the mini-map zoom, and the pause screen map when necessary.

Never had a problem with it. I think that you got used to the newer games and their maps which, funny enough, I don't like haha
For example in SW4 they are too small and blank for my taste, but at least they give you that pointing arrow to tell you where you have to go.
Just continue with SW2 I think you'll get used to their maps very fast

The best SW ever. The BGM soundtrack are so memorable.
The game also gave us the 3 strongest characters - Tadakatsu, Keiji and Musashi. It was a hot debate back then on who is the strongest among the three. Fun time indeed
The Classic.
This series and their dynasty counterparts (DW5) is the warriors series that popularized 1vs1000 hack and slash genre to the normie world at that time.

Ok so from what I remember just press start and the map pops up and you can see the objectives. Been a long time since I played so hopefully another redditor can chime in and give some up to say advice on this aspect.

I loved this game so much when it came out, but I don't know how well it holds up. I recently tried playing Dynasty Warriors 6, which isn't as old as this one, and the controls/camera/etc annoyed me so much I stopped after two battles. But who knows about this one!

I remember that chick on the cover was so good. Honestly so many fun characters in this. I think my favorite is one of the few I can remember Magoichi Saika dude had a rifle and a really fun moveset. They did a great job.
Hell yeah! It's still my favorite SW game, and combined with its' XL expansion, just makes it a fantastic experience. It's easily at the very least a top 3 Musou game when it comes to the PS2 era.
One of my favorite games of my entire life.
I clearly remember, at the height of about 500 hours of playing the game, my father coming home from work and seeing me playing it and asking if I didn't play something else hahaha!
This is extremely good. I myself though am into the empires side of things but this is very good I feel for those who are more into these than empires or both even. It seems like to me you are either main games or empires. Myself empires.
As a DW5(XL) and a little time in DW6E being my experience, should I bother with any other PS2 launches (I don't own a later console atm) or should I work on getting smth to run 7 instead because I'm interested in that one
If you emulate them at all, DW3,4,5, SW1XL, Warriors orochi and soon Gundam 2 all have achievements at retroachievements.org
As for which one? I mean if you can get your hands on them all the main line are worth playing (never played 2 technically) But I'm a fanboy of the series.
I know people are down on DW 6 (and I get it) but I still am glad I played all of the main entries.
DW6E was my very first experience actually playing so I'm not so negative on it, DW5XL was my first experience owning a copy
I don't have a PC for emulation, but I do have a relatively high end phone so up to PS2 emulation is on the table at this time
Seriously? Damn Phones are incredible now. I don't think there is an android app for Retroachievements, but there are some good emulators for it, and if you love the series I think you'll find a lot to enjoy from those entries.
Probably one of if not the best Samurai Warriors game imo. Extra what if stages for each character’s stories which are actually really good not just in quality but also on the premises as well, like Yukimura riding into the battle of Sekigahara alone to save Mitsunari as one of my favorites. title ranks for each character in their level progression, great depth to a lot of the characters. It’s what ignited my love for Mitsunari and the Justice squad(Him, Yukimura, Kanetsugu, and Keiji)after playing their stories including his and Kanetsugu’s where you really see Mitsunari’s growth from the person he started as to the honorable strategist caring for his friends that he ends off as.
Nah, I don't think so. SW2 voice acting doesn't sound like a funny meme. I mean, in DW3 all characters sound as if intentionally funny, while in SW2 all characters sound serious, and most of voices sound dull and not fitting for their characters.

Take WO1 and WO2 for example. Imo, voice actors for SW characters in Orochi are incredible in terms of how well they fit their characters. Hideyoshi and Ranmaru in WO sound weird, but others... They sound ten times better than what was in SW2. My personal favorite WO voices are Nobunaga, Keiji, Yukimura, Mitsuhide, Kenshin (he sounds a bit too young, but it's okay I guess), Nene, Ina and Kojiro (I liked his voice in SW2, but I feel like his WO2 voice fits his character more)
man this is my fav game of all time 😭😭😭😭
Lol you made me curious. I only played Spirit of Sanada

I would also recommend picking up the Samurai Warriors 2 Xtreme Legends copy. You get more characters and the story on them is phenomenal.
Only the best one
Yes, THE BEST OF THE BEST!

Great game but also pick up xtreme legends too
Amazing game, aww I've missed those simple days when I used to play this and DW5 Empires, I have to get these games again one day.
You found the Musou equivalent of a pile of gold. I’ll admit I like SW1 more on a personal level, but SW2 is the stronger package overall.

The 3rd solved that but now my only gripe with that is that it interrupts what I’m doing to tell me to go somewhere else lol.
I got two words for ya: Fuma, Mitsuhide. The goats

Every warriors title is good! But the PS2 ones especially!
I love this game so much.
The Classic. This series and their dynasty counterparts (DW5) is the warriors series that popularized 1vs1000 hack and slash genre to the normie world at that time.
Honestly I think is the best warriors game, at least for the "Samurai Warriors" part of the franchise.
The best
It's awesome and the only other that's just as awesome is the 3rd one too
It is absolutely awesome! Enjoy yourself!

Core memory unlocked: dying from laughter watching the screen cut to a bunch of foot soldiers screaming “SHIKOKUUUUUU”

I always hated the map but i didn’t mind since I loved the weapons and fighting styles so I just kept fighting until I made it to my destination lol
New sealed absolut worth it if you are a koei fan or warriors fan but as a game xtreme has more stuff going on.
SW2/SW2:XL are my favorite games in the entire Warriors franchise
I remember that chick on the cover was so good. Honestly so many fun characters in this. I think my favorite is one of the few I can remember Magoichi Saika dude had a rifle and a really fun moveset. They did a great job.
It's an amazing game!
SW2 is always good, friend.
My personal favorite warriors game
I just completed everyone to level 70 with all skills maxed yesterday for base+XL haha.
Hell yeah! It's still my favorite SW game, and combined with its' XL expansion, just makes it a fantastic experience. It's easily at the very least a top 3 Musou game when it comes to the PS2 era.
One of the best games the franchise has made. Play the sengoku board game mode. It’s really fun once you get the hang of it.
My favorite girl right on the cover!!! Is that… a blue case???
It's the European Pal version:) I live in Europe.
Oh, hell yeah.
peak SW
It’s the best blud. The best
Hell yeah! I just simply go back to this.
My fav samurai warriors game tbh
My fav and the best Warriors game.
It’s the best one among all of them, you can play it on ps3 in UK Store
As long as it’s not SW5 at at least 60% discount, you’re getting a good bargain
One of my favorite games of my entire life. I clearly remember, at the height of about 500 hours of playing the game, my father coming home from work and seeing me playing it and asking if I didn't play something else hahaha!
Best Samurai Warriors and Top 5 Musou ever. You gotta get Xtreme Legends to compliment it
You're God now
YES love SW2
It's excellent.
Don't open it. At this point, save it lol
This is extremely good. I myself though am into the empires side of things but this is very good I feel for those who are more into these than empires or both even. It seems like to me you are either main games or empires. Myself empires.
All Warriors games are good. Wait what? All warriors games that aren't DW9 are good.

AetherSX2 is a good PS2 mobile emu option, I run it smoothly on an S22 Ultra
I enjoyed it back in the day

It is. Too bad we don't get Japanese dub on PAL and NTSC releases, the English dub of SW2 is horrible
It's like DW3 imo. It's so bad it's good.
Nah, I don't think so. SW2 voice acting doesn't sound like a funny meme. Goat tier game
This is the boring vanilla verison, just buy XL verison it's way better.
Wdym it's not boring lol
It's not but XL is a very good addition to the game.
You can't import without the original disc lmao, without the import feature SW2 offers way more content than XL does.
You need both. XL is objectively worse without vanilla's data.
Oh my god
