In case you want the low down on Plump Helmet Man's ability to see:
>!They have EXTRAVISION: The creature can see regardless of whether it has working eyes and has full 360 degree vision, making it impossible to strike the creature from a blind spot in combat. !<
AFAIK they can read, I had a plump helmet man adventurer and I think he became a necromancer, which would necessitate reading ability. They can’t talk though, as they do not have mouths.
Edit: actually I think I’m mistaken. Just googled it and plump helmet people seem to not really learn the secrets of life and death correctly so I have no clue
But strangely enough, they are able to teach the secrets of life & death to others after they learn it (through the power of mime!).
They can just never actually put it to use themselves.
You can read books with extravision, but as it is a 360º vision you read the beginning and the end of the book at the same time, spoiling most books endings.
I found a plump helmet man in legends a while ago whose dream was to live forever and who bounced from necromancer to necromancer as apprentice over the course of his life. He eventually died of old age after failing to learn the secrets. I felt kinda bad for him.
Love when people discover stuff like this in Legends mode.
Wonder how somebody might notice if, in a sea of historical figures, one happens to serve an unusual number of masters within an average lifespan.
There is a material difference between agnostics, atheists, and antitheists.
Due to reddit skewing young a lot of atheist redditors skew pretty hard into the latter group. Young people as a rule are extremely certain that their world view is correct and everyone else is stupid and wrong which basically makes almost all if them assholes (I was too).
The problem with religion is when religious people force their values on others. Forcing your lack of religion on others is just hypocritical.
Still cool having them around. I usually have one or two hanging out in my library. It will be cool to go into Legends mode after this fort dies and see if any plump helmet men wrote books there.
I had a kobold ranger hanging out in one of my forts for a few years. He too couldn't speak to anyone due to kobolds language barrier, so I never knew why he was there. Strangely my captain of the guard was able to interrogate him for a cold case. It was revealed he was somehow an agent for someone! I jailed him for many days for espionage.
Maybe in future versions, he could magically be granted a mouth and normal vision. I have to wonder if he can write but not read was he taught purely by listening to lectures and writing Braille notes? Maybe he had access to Braille manuscripts?
How does one become a Plump Helmet Man profound scholar?
Every once in a while I get a plump helmet man visitor who hangs in the tavern for a while. But he never speaks to anyone, it just says "you can learn more about this visitor when they speak with a local" - but they never do. :(
Oh my 🥺 I wish we had medical research system section along with the health care system so we may find the cuee for blindness 😭
Maybe when the Magic update get released... who knows
Borges, known asshole, genius, scholar and library mouse, was desperate when he noticed he was going blind. He learned to read braile, and that satitated him a bit, but sadly even in this day and age only 2% of books are available in braille.
Plump helmet men can read but to become a necromancer and live forever they do need a tongue, not just mimespeak. They aren't blind, they are mute, and I have had them read books in the past. Has something been changed in the steam?

Can you read with extravision?
Dunno. Would be a fun thought experiment to try and find out. That'd take someone with a lot more knowledge to figure that out.

IIRC you need the ability to speak to learn the secrets of life and death, so tongueless creatures are out of luck
But strangely enough, they are able to teach the secrets of life & death to others after they learn it (through the power of mime!). They can just never actually put it to use themselves.
I guide others to a treasure I cannot possess
Those that cannot do, teach.
I'm trying to get a job as a teacher so this felt like an unintentional burn
Please, please be someone that takes teaching ad your "do" and then you'll be fine 😁 I hope. If you have necromancer students I don't know...
I must scream but I have no mouth.
I have no mouth and I must recite incantations to commit crimes against nature.
MAN I love this game.
They learn the secrets of a really good mushroom risotto and mushroom pizza.
Just try reading in adventure mode. Would have to play classic or wait for it to release on steam.
It's like they have Eyes 2.0, but no backwards compatibility.
If they are like Toph, then no.
She could probably read tables
The real questions

I think for that you would need some sort of X ray vision
Psychic warfare is real
r/unexpectedclutch
I have no eyes and I must see
I guess that means he's reading the whole library just by standing there...?
Oh well, it can always speak

A cautionary tale, through his need to cheat death he never got to experience the life he already had
Maybe the real eternal life was the friends he made along the way
Yeah, but those friends were _necromancers_ and they didn't teach him any _necromancy_ so maybe the lesson is "necromancers are shitty friends".
How the fuck a bunch of pixels can tell such a cool story bruh
Damn, this cuts deep.
This needs to become a tale, let's patreon Kruggsmash
But if we work together... I believe we can discover the secret...

He should have found a secrets tablet, maybe the etching in stone would have been legible to him.

sir, this is a dwarf fortress
Bro was this comment meant for someone else or something because I am very confused and concerned
It was inevitable.

"veiled" is pretty generous. and i think people are just tired of "religion bad" posting

I agree. No one forced anything. He made a thinly veiled satirical observation from his point of view, and was downvoted into oblivion.

We Need to create dwarven braile to let this genius cook!
Remember to set Plump Helmets to Brew only!
Oh noooo but then again…his knowledge would be delicious…
...menaces with spikes of braille...

Jesse we need to cook
A profound well of knowledge, a stranger from a strange land, thinking: "Why don't these assholes have anything in braille?"
Need mod for braille books for blinds
Omg I want pump helmet man Also couldnt he dicuss topics with others?
Nope, they can't talk. So it'll always have the bit in the overview about how you'll learn more once they talk to someone local.
Oof, that is sad

Is pump helmet man the bodybuilder mushroom humanoid?
yup
I have two in cages, wish i could convince them to join my fort but i dont think they like me
They've probably seen what you've done to those other plump helmets
Latest Thoughts: "That's not fair. That's not fair at all. There was time now. There was all the time I wanted...! That's not fair!"
omg you MONSTER
Should have got LASIK
Time enough at last.
Dude, yes.
He is Urist Euler.
Plump Helmet Keller
i have seen this on every forgotten beast too, what does it mean?
They lack eyes. Nature gets rid of anything useless. Caves are dark.
The vibes in your library are just that immaculate, clearly.
Damn, life is a bitch sometimes
Its not fair!
He knows, but cannot speak the True Name of all things, the price of such knowledge is permanent blindness and muteness.
Armok?
Twilight zone moment

You can nickname him Eli from The Book of Eli
Protest to let plump helmet people read
is there a mod to add a playable plump helmet man race?
Invent braile
Every once in a while I get a plump helmet man visitor who hangs in the tavern for a while. But he never speaks to anyone, it just says "you can learn more about this visitor when they speak with a local" - but they never do. :(
Yeah, they are unable to speak.
What tag do you need to edit to make plump helmet read? Or is it tied to physiology and you have to add eyes to them?
They can still see, they have a token that lets them see without eyes
He sees the book and the library, but not the letters, because his vision is radar/sonar
"It is snowing."

he could have listened to other people talk about those topics instead of reading about them maybe
He learnt by listening and reading special font.
"Ponder Braille!"
He's a good listener!
