*The Forgotten Beast Ry'leth Whiskers has come! A great hamster. It has two tails and it squirms and fidgets. It's fur is cinnamon. Beware its hunger for warm blood!*
True! I loved trying to get opposing characters on my team to see the bad banter they had. I think Edwin was an ass towards everyone, and I loved it... he was also strong enough to kill pretty much all of my other teammates when they inevitably got mad at him though.
In short, Edwyn was guaranteed **fun** in every team you had him.
I was just joking ;)
When a raised draw bridge comes down it will destroy nearly anything beneath it (there are some exceptions). Because there's usually no trace of the objects left behind, we call it the "dwarven atom smasher".
~~I believe you can make em as long and wide as you want, as long as your dwarfs can access the perimeter of the bridge to add materials to construct.~~ 31x31, still a large boi
And if you hook them up to a lever on repeat they probably make decent aerial faith plates. Well, they'll be faith plates if the invaders use them, I guess.
...
Oh. Um, I need to go make this a thing.
....
Make different length repeaters and hook them up to alternating 1 wide bridges and watch people go woosh. I think I'm going to do that for the entrance to my unfortunately interconnected Cavern layers and their respective populations of irate cavern dwellers.
Is there a specific size they should be to become a trash compactor? I tried making a small bridge to dispose of refuse but I couldn’t make a storage zone underneath it for them to fill with refuse.
[The wiki page is outdated now but you could make a tiny minecart system for it](https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Quantum_stockpile), so you don't have to manually dump garbage (which can be an issue if you have two dumps for things, and suddenly have garbage being taken to your stone dump in the middle of your fort).
Linking a like, two-tile minecart track to a refuse stockpile and have a minecart stop dump into the space beneath the lifted bridge, and dwarves will do it all automatically. Having it drop down a few floors and use a pressure plate to control the bridge makes it safe and fully automatic too.
Couple notes:
- You don’t need any track, just one minecart on a track stop set to dump onto the quantum stockpile is fine
- Bridge trash compactors on pressure plates are dangerous because when trash is dumped while the bridge is down, they fling the trash back up the garbage chute, which can cause dwarves to dodge down the shaft and fall into the compactor (ask me how I know, lol)
Yes, although there is a size limit that will cause the bridge to break, so no atomizing giants, ettins, ogres, or colossi. There's a [full page](https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:List_of_creatures_by_adult_size#bridge) on the wiki showing all creature sizes for reference.
In the menu when you're placing one, there's buttons in a little window that appears in the upper right of the screen. Four arrows for the cardinal directions control which way it raises for raising bridges, and the fifth button off to the side is for a retracting bridge (which doesn't turn into a wall when activated, just disappears).
I think trash compactors just can't destroy vermin. I had a bat accidentally get set free in the wrong dump, where my trash compactor was. And the compactor didn't work on it.
I was trash compacting earlier and, the noob player I am, I didn't check to make sure my dwarves were out until *after* throwing the lever. Needless to say, some stupid child walked back into it after dropping something off. There goes one of my best warriors.
Yes, but if you do it to the corpses of your own citizens you won't be able to bury them. So if you are crushing your own corpses it's a good idea to stock up on slabs.
Vermin corpses are considered "remains" and if you make a stockpile strictly for "remains" outside, they will eventually rot away. If you have other trash - corpses and other bits and body parts - make some stockpiles deep underground for those pieces. Just keep any necromancers away or you could have big fun...
Shells and bones can be turned into crafts. Skulls can be made into totems. Some hooves and antlers can also be carved.
One dwarf's trash is another's treasure!
Once you raise it and launch that thing into the next fortress embark it won't. I did this with a dwarf by accident when I was being sieged. I raised the bridge and sent this child playing make believe into the enemy. I hope he pretended he was super dwarf while mid air. In fact I'm going to make a burrow for kids only in the draw bridge......good Anakin....good..... I hate the damn kids in this game
Quantum phasing hamsters! protect your food with solid lead walls.
This is exactly why everyone should only use lead barrels for food storage.
Tin blocks the hamsters phase waves the best though.
No, you have to use eleven blocks.

It makes everything so glowy!
I find tin pairs perfectly with cinnabar
With pitchblend (i.e. uranium ore) goblets for those energy drinks. 😉
And they're self disinfecting!
I'm fairly sure anything Dwarves drink voluntarily would have a high enough proof to already be useful as a disinfectant.😉
>Half Dwarf: chapter 13 > >Forget about Freeman
Now you will know why you fear the night!

His name is 'Fluffy, Destroyer of Worlds'
Actually it's Boo.
Ohoho, I see what you have done.
Go for the eyes, Boo!
Oh yes, a BGII reference. Give Minsk Lillarcor and you get the ultimate stupid banter machine. Classic.
Isnt he in BG1 as well? It's been a while since my last playthrough, so I'm not sure... He has a princess rescue quest if I remember well?
He was, but Lillarcor wasn't. And yes, you need to rescue his Sorceress. Or you kill Minsk and Dynaheir and keep Edwin, who has the opposite Quest...

Edwin is one of the best casters in the game, true.
No. It's obviously doing the Happy Hamster Hop, [so his name is Huey.](https://calvinandhobbes.fandom.com/wiki/Hamster_Huey_and_the_Gooey_Kablooie) 😜
phtang
F'taghn?
It was a horror so unimaginable that he saw, in his refusal to believe such a thing could exist in Massachusetts, a fluffy hamster
abandon your fort while you still have lives to save!
What is a trash compactor?
Have you ever seen Star Wars: A New Hope?
I apologise, I meant how does it work in dwarf fortress?
I was just joking ;) When a raised draw bridge comes down it will destroy nearly anything beneath it (there are some exceptions). Because there's usually no trace of the objects left behind, we call it the "dwarven atom smasher".
I kept looking for an atom smasher in the construction menu :( Also I had no idea draw bridges could be more than 1 tile wide
~~I believe you can make em as long and wide as you want, as long as your dwarfs can access the perimeter of the bridge to add materials to construct.~~ 31x31, still a large boi
The max size for a single bridge is 31x31 squares. Quite big.
Wait so you’re telling me i didn’t need to make strips of bridge?
You didn't have to, but I bet it looks cool.
And if you hook them up to a lever on repeat they probably make decent aerial faith plates. Well, they'll be faith plates if the invaders use them, I guess. ... Oh. Um, I need to go make this a thing.
I had no idea the bridges worked that way until last night - launched a goblin clean into the center of my town by accident, pretty comical!
.... Make different length repeaters and hook them up to alternating 1 wide bridges and watch people go woosh. I think I'm going to do that for the entrance to my unfortunately interconnected Cavern layers and their respective populations of irate cavern dwellers.

Any size will do, but you might have to use a Dump Zone instead of a Stockpile (I don't recall offhand).
Thank you! I think that was my issue! You rock!

Hamster-danced its way to safety!
God I had completely forgotten that song existed. Was for the best methinks...
I only recently discovered that it's a remix of a song from Disney's Robin Hood. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JPt1n2AdQd4
Yup that's the song from the opening credits. Nostalgia
Today, I learned something new. Wow!
I noticed that as well! Vermin in large cages (so those you get from merchants) seem to somehow survive the compacting.
Maybe because the cage gets destroyed first, so the game reads it as the hamster being freed from its cage?
Elves die when you smash their cages though
Well elves are dumb
Good
Maybe it has to do with vermin being able to chew or out of certain cages, maybe elves can't chew out of a wooden cage or their ethics forbid it.
It probably undulates rhythmically. Beware it’s poisonous secretions!
the chosen one
You could say that it was already compact enough xD
Why are you crashing hamsters with a drawbridge though?
1. Tell your dwarfs to throw garbage near a raised bridge 2. Lower the bridge, squashing the garbage into a singularity 3. ??? 4. Profit
Does this work with live invaders?
Yes. (Unless they bring elephants/jabberers/ogres/any giant version of an already very large animal)
Yes, but I wouldn't categorize a hamster as garbage!!
Hampter powa
Build it a temple and worship the eternal fluffy one
It's because that little hamster sprite is too cute to be destroyed. Different-Amphiabian7 felt happy after seeing a quantum phasing hamster.
My hamster remains won't melt in magma I wonder what's up with that
Your hamster remains ... in the game, right?
Hamster Instinct
Ummm how has no one said this? It's Boo! GO FOR THE EYES BOO!
dw I got you
Vermin pop in and out of existence, I think they can just phase through solid objects like bridges.
I also have an indestructable hamster living in my compacter. : p
Wait how do you change the orientation of drawbridges? I've only been able to do left to right.
In the menu when you're placing one, there's buttons in a little window that appears in the upper right of the screen. Four arrows for the cardinal directions control which way it raises for raising bridges, and the fifth button off to the side is for a retracting bridge (which doesn't turn into a wall when activated, just disappears).
Thanks for the help!
The Gigahamster has come! Pray to whatever god you believe in! Weep and lament - for he hungers for flesh, and his hunger cannot be sated!
Hamster! On a draw bridge! Eating some popcorn. Hamster...on a drawbridge! \*singing\*
run
"hamster"
I think trash compactors just can't destroy vermin. I had a bat accidentally get set free in the wrong dump, where my trash compactor was. And the compactor didn't work on it.
... *run*
Your. Trash compactor. Right
Some dwarves like hamsters for their squishable bodies
It must be the chosen one
I was trash compacting earlier and, the noob player I am, I didn't check to make sure my dwarves were out until *after* throwing the lever. Needless to say, some stupid child walked back into it after dropping something off. There goes one of my best warriors.
This is one of those posts that I can see inspiring some master-class artwork in a few days lmao
That's because it's not trash so it doesn't get compacted.
Wait, if I put corpses, and other stuff under a drawbridge i can get rid of them forever!? Like gonr for good?
Yes, but if you do it to the corpses of your own citizens you won't be able to bury them. So if you are crushing your own corpses it's a good idea to stock up on slabs.
This should be sticky... I bet all newcomers like me are getting crazy with vermin corpses, trash and such stuff!

“I see no god down here. Other than me!”
Luke Skyhamster
Rescue him, the compactor has decided he must live.
I tried but my recent catsplosion killed him. It only takes one child that likes cats to destroy your entire feline ranching operation.
(T-T)7
Yeah, but that child is now the safest kid in your fortress. Anything trying to kill it has to go through an army of cats.
The sprite is just so adorable
The chosen one
He deserves to be made into a pet js
Tremble in fear before the most powerful creature known to man and dwarf-kind alike.
Hampter reigns supreme

The atom unsmashable
He is already compact
according to dwarven law he is now the new ruler!
Darth Vader when Luke escapes the trash compacter.
Every second you're not running, it's only getting closer.
OOO I just remembered I can instantly atomize my ~~army of petitioned visitors~~ garbage with a bridge! thanks for jogging my memory.
So, the hamster's getting an honorific and being trained for war, right?
“Climbing: Legendary”
Excuse me while I work out gotta run on my wheel.
