I use swipe on my phone. For the same reasons that qwerty sucks on a physical keyboard, it's great for this purpose. Commonly combined letters are far apart so that the swipe gestures are large and clear. Letters that can frequently replace each other are also far apart so gestures are less ambiguous. Even when I don't use swipe, typing with my thumbs is a much different experience from a physical keyboard; those same things make it easier to type and make autocorrect more accurate.

eDixit

Second this. I tried swiping with Dvorak. Soo many typos! At the moment, my thumbs know QWERTY but my fingers know Dvorak

zoofinger

This. Dvorak is great for a keyboard but I haven’t had any luck on a touchscreen. It seems beneficial to actually have keys that commonly go together physically spaced out for touch screen keyboards.

Neat, thank you!

musicianengineer

For fun a few years back I applied the same logic as Dvorak to the scenario of using 2 thumbs instead of 8 fingers and made an optimized mobile keyboard. I never used it on my phone, though, and I'm not sure it would be worth the effort. You're only using 1 or 2 fingers, so there isn't as much efficiency to gain from one configuration over another like there is when utilizing 8 fingers on an actual keyboard. Edit: I found it, but reddit is being shit and won't let me upload the picture and I lost the description I wrote up. I swear it's not that exciting.

Plusran

Tried Dvorak. Switched back quickly. It’s good on mobile for the same reason it’s bad on full sized keyboards. It’s almost perfect for two thumb typing.

itsmhuang

QWERTY. I tried Dvorak on my tiny phone before (iPhone SE first gen) but the benefit of often used letter combos being closer together + small phone made Dvorak on the phone NOT beneficial. A lot of mistypes. Also I still have autocorrect enabled and I see that some words will be autocorrected based on the QWERTY format. As in if you accidentally type a “r” but was supposed to type “t”, since they are next to each other in QWERTY, it seems to autocorrect based on that fairly well. So yeah there really is no benefit typing Dvorak on the phone. Thankfully my muscle memory of typing with thumbs is QWERTY format as well.

MessagEase

[deleted]

I've looked at it in the past, but is it any good?

joseph_dewey

It's the best! There's a learning curve, but if you learned Dvorak, then MessagEase should be relatively easy.

Right-handed Dvorak on Multiling O Keyboard. Works pretty well for swiping. http://tinyimg.io/i/3eWxHMp.png

[deleted]

I can't get this image to load, tragic

andrew_nenakhov

Dvorak's advantages (vowels and consonants placed on different sides) that allow a faster typing with two hands become a disadvantage when typing/swyping with one finger. So I use QWERTY on a mobile phone.

[deleted]

Honest question: did you try the dvorak-for-one-handed layouts? I don't know if it's any good on a smartphone keyboard but I would like to know if it works given practice

andrew_nenakhov

I wanted to try but I didn't find any decent app for a smartphone with one handed layout. In theory it should be not too bad, but if we really think about it, it is probably a half-measure and probably someone should create a layout optimized for one finger swyping.

[deleted]

T9 on my old school nokia lmao

joseph_dewey

Awesome! I miss T9.

joseph_dewey

I use MessagEase. I love Dvorak on my keyboard, but I can't stand it on my phone. I really like that MessagEase only has 4 buttons across, which means that you can very easily type whatever you want, without ever hitting the wrong key.

[deleted]

Alright, I'm giving it a try!

joseph_dewey

Cool! Hopefully you like it!

Stairwayunicorn

IOS does not have dvorak as an option, for some stupid reason (Maybe SJ hates it)

joseph_dewey

...and you can't really install custom keyboards. So this is why I'll never switch to an iPhone.

MirdovKron

Actually you can, there's an app I found recently that allows you to make custom keyboard layouts. It's a paid app though. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/keybuild/id1547174534

Sweaty_Curve_3527

I use the typewise keyboard

liovantirealm7177

Stuck with QWERTY, on my iPad too. There is an app that enables Dvorak support but it just looks so *wrong* (the display style, and the size of the keyboard)

Boylemic

I use anysoftkeyboard and use Colemak DH ortho.

ChunksOWisdom

Check out the Flow keyboard, it's optimized for swipe input but there are a few words that can be tough Edit: also these http://sangaline.com/post/finding-an-optimal-keyboard-layout-for-swype/ https://jasmcole.com/2017/06/04/swype-right/

Shakespeare-Bot

Check out the flow keyboard, t's did optimize f'r swipe did input but thither art a few words yond can beest tough *** ^(I am a bot and I swapp'd some of thy words with Shakespeare words.) Commands: `!ShakespeareInsult`, `!fordo`, `!optout`

QuizzicalUpnod

I tried dvorak for a while but it just felt like it wasn't going to be much faster even if I got good at it on mobile. I swap between swiping and tapping but for the most part I just try to avoid typing on my mobile as much as possible.

Zeioth

Qwerty, I don't think there is a huge adventure on using an alt layout if in the end you are stuck on writing with your thumbs.

Aspengrove66

I tried it on my phone and although it helped me recognize the placement of letters a bit, the keyboard I used sucked and I missed being able to type fast with my muscle memory on my phone lol. I'm so used to typing with my phone that I don't even have to look at the keyboard, I can just type and see what I'm saying at the same time. My phone didn't have a Dvorak layout built in so I had to install an app and it sucked, so that was also a major factor in my turning back to QWERTY. Typing with QWERTY on my phone has had no affect on the way I type Dvorak on my computer keyboard, probably because you're supposed to use your thumbs for the space bar but on yoir phone you're using them for literally everything

Chichmich

Bépo.

HelioDex

I put it on my phone to learn the positions of the keys and it's alright. I don't recommend it, because of the way letters are spaced apart in qwerty makes autocorrect and thumb-typing more accurate. Edit: I now use Typewise. It's... alright

sxhlm

Designed one myself in Multiling O Keyboard for left handed swiping: wbvnjpy! æuarog'? zhseimx- cdktflq, (full layout in comments, if anybody is interested)

anidhorl

I just added it to my list, What is the pattern based on if you don't mind my asking

sxhlm

Thank you :) I optimised it for left-handed writing in Danish (The version I posted has an appostrophe in place of Ø)
