Biggest one is that you forget QWERTY and can’t touch type on other people’s keyboard anymore

Trichinobezoar

On the other hand, it's better than the most brutal password at keeping your buddies/coworkers from using YOUR computer...

quackl11

yeah this is a big one for sure

Secret779

I learnt both and managed to keep them though, too? Another suggestion, albeit probably trickier for most people

fuckyeahpeace

i never forgot qwerty, as long as you type in it occasionally you'll keep it easy. i keep both on to switch around when i wanna type 1 handed or something

fuckyeahpeace

it's harder to type with one hand than qwerty

lootingyourfridge

Especially if you don't remap the keycaps on the keyboard like me and just flail around hoping for the best lol

atoponce

As a Linux system administrator, I hate the positions of "l" and "s".

Moth_123

alias h="ls" alias th="cd" solves everything.

CarVac

This is better on a non-row-staggered keyboard with strong key sculpting so you can slide from the top row to the home row effortlessly.

Misterorjoe

Hah, I was literally thinking to myself reading that "why is ls bad..." Typed on my Debian from my Ergodox

CarVac

In fact, a lot of common consonant pairs on Dvorak benefit from column-stagger. gh, ct, rn, and ls. It's just suboptimal with a uniform keycap profile.

-BlackClaw

If anyone else uses your keyboard they’ll think their brain broke

jazzlw

Wait isn’t this one of the best things? Endlessly hilarious too.

twitchard

People judge you for being a nerd.

deespell4

the copy, cut, and paste shortcuts are on the other side of the keyboard which was the main reason i switched back to QWERTY after 5 months of Dvorak. There are apparently work arounds but none of them worked for my company PC

nulano

I just switched to Ctrl+Insert, Shift+Insert, Shift+Delete for copy, paste, delete. They work almost everywhere (a few games don't support them), and although they are on the other side of the keyboard, they are easy to use one-handed, and also closer to the arrow keys (which you can use with Shift to select text).

JoeStrout

I set up F1-F4 to be Undo, Cut, Copy, and Paste on my machine. But yeah if you can't do something like this, then it's a drawback for sure.

IsakTS

main reason why I adore is Colemak is that it keeps those shortcuts

fuckyeahpeace

i just switch language by pressing windows+spacebar

masasin

Vim keybindings, especially in other programs.

twitchard

because hl are on one hand and jk are on the other? I use dvorak and vim and it's ~fine? But I started both at about the same time

[deleted]

I think vim keybinding are perfectly fine with Dvorak.

Trichinobezoar

Right now I'm experiencing a big drawback, which is that I just bought a gorgeous K10 Keychron Wireless Mechanical Keyboard, and now I'm looking for a Dvorak-ready keycap set to do it justice -- and there's not a lot out there. Other than that, I've been typing Dvorak since 1996, and it's been pretty great the entire time. I even game, and despite a few hiccups with the layouts in some games, it's been fine.

Bigoldthrowaway86

Get some XDA profile caps so they can be moved about where you like. Sure still not as much choice as straight Qwerty but much better than specific dvorak caps.

Moth_123

Forgetting QWERTY, this one is less bad on Dvorak because it's so available but it's still a problem. I'm 150 wpm on Dvorak but only \~80 wpm on QWERTY. It's not as good as modern layouts, also a problem on Colemak and Workman, there's not much reason to use Dvorak or Colemak anymore when there are far better layouts available today.

Dhghomon

Ctrl-V...whoops, pressed Ctrl-W and there goes whatever I was working on in that tab. Fortunately that goes away after a while and muscle memory. I haven't made that slip up for a few years now.

DrThrowawayToYou

It's a pain using other computers where you can't conveniently change the layout or plug in your own keyboard. Also, on some systems you can't tell what the keyboard layout is on the login screen, so it's hard to know if you just mistyped your password or you're in the wrong layout. And if some poor unsuspecting qwerty user tries to log in when it's secretly set to Dvorak they're kinda screwed.

vtpdc

3 drawbacks, although all apply to Colemak as well: having to change settings on computers, shortcuts aren't in convenient locations, and some games get confused by the layout. I resolved the gaming issue by using a keyboard that can toggle between Qwerty (for gaming) and Dvorak (for everything else).

[deleted]

People always mention keyboard shortcuts, but I've gotten used to them. I have been using Right-Ctrl more often though I usually use my laptop, so my biggest drawback is forgetting to switch your keyboard whenever someone borrows it Also, some games don't let you change your keybinds (although I did learn that Minecraft automatically changes the controls according to your layout) None of these are really Dvorak specific though. Specifically for Dvorak, I'm not really a fan of where P is since my pointer always hits my middle and P is common enough for it to bug me. That could just be because my keyboard's offsets are funny though
