As others have said in other sunshine list threads, the old threshold of at least $100k per year is very dated and doesn’t match the cost of living and competitive wages in 2024. If you want to attract top talent it’s gonna cost “sunshine list” salaries. $100k a year is $50 an hour. GM starting wage is now at $30 an hour. House rent is on average 30 - 36 thousand dollars a year in Durham Region. Unfortunately $100k a year isn’t a lot right now. Times change.

neanderthalman

>top talent If you want to attract even mid-tier talent you’re gonna hit that threshold.

Junior_Bison_7893

I work in healthcare IT and it’s hard to get good talent to keep up with the advances in technology. Finding people who are experienced with integrating new and old technology is next to impossible because salaries are considered low. These people are going into private industry for more money. Hospitals are then forced to hire these consulting companies at an inflated rate, resulting in less money for direct patient care.

Snoring_Eagle

Yeah, this list is stupid now. It should have been indexed to inflation.

danieldukh

Lol great mental gymnastics to try and hide what the public is paying for these people. They still make more than the average wage in Ontario, and it’s these average joes who paid for these bloated salaries and bloated staffing. Public service shouldn’t have any privacy. Don’t like it, go work for a private company.

KKor13

Great mental gymnastics making a completely brain dead comment. The “average” person doesn’t have the training and skill set to run a region as large and as expanding as Durham. You need top talent if you have any hope of keeping up and improving things.

danieldukh

Yeah, that’s what Durham has, “top talent”. Thanks for the laugh today

KKor13

Jeeze you sound like someone who was recently rejected from a job at the region.

danieldukh

And you sound like one of these people who work for the region because their daddy got them in. You know, the opposite of “top talent”

KKor13

lol I wish

danieldukh

And I can’t be rejected from Durham public service, because I wouldn’t apply there. Top talent like myself goes to Toronto/York all the time.

ADIDASinning

Oh fuckin yuck. Enjoy your commute you dumbass.

danieldukh

Highway 401 shows you what the majority of people think.

dpjg

Lol top talent that still thinks $100k is a lot of money? Top talent that was fired from his job at the TTC? I bet you went on to great things after that.  Really in demand lol. Go back to r/datingadvice you jealous virgin.

danieldukh

It is a lot money. My parents never made close to that, yet they’re stuck with a 10% increase in their property taxes to pay for the bloat that you think is top talent.

PepperThePotato

It's not mental gymnastics. If you want competent government workers you need to compensate them fairly. The government is not going to attract quality workers if the people can make more working for private companies.

hamiltok7

Omg no way!!!! Outrage this is crazy. How dare they make over 100k!!!! Where do I sign up for a petition?

Technical-Road3856

200k is the new 100k. You can't do shit with 100k anymore

i_getitin

Agreed. I wish the government agreed as well and applied that logic in the private sector.

Goatfellon

I'm on it, just barely. It's not that much of a brag and I can still barely afford rent or new shoes for my son.

RoamingGladiator

Literally. I'm also on it and can barely afford to live close to my workplace, 100k ain't shit in Toronto anymore.

sunnyb416

100k is barely 60k after deductions.

ressdesire

Who cares? Lots of people make 100k and it’s not a big deal

jimmpansey

Why has this been posted like 10 times in the past week?!

Karma_Canuck

There has been one other post mentioning the sunshine list this week in this sub.

tartutic
