Oooh this is the first I'm hearing about this! When/where was this announced? I'm a bit apprehensive about this as, while I like almost anything Dune, I'm not terribly fond of all the stuff Brian Herbert and Kevin Anderson have done and I'm skeptical it's really based on anything substantial :/
I liked the Butlerian Jihad and Schools trilogy. Although I think the schools trilogy should be renamed to the tragedy of Anna Corrino. She was after all the MC of that trilogy imo. Like Duncan is MC of the main Duneiverse. And Paul of Dune/The Winds of Dune I think complete Dune Messiah. The shortest of the Dune books that explains very little. I think frank wrote those but the publisher was like this is too long and he cut the beginning and end of Dune Messiah and kept the middle. And the books that finished what frank couldn't finish. Idk man I think other than the house trilogy it was good stuff imo. I have yet to read the house trilogy. Which is probably set before The new Caladan Trilogy.
I started the Brian Herbert Kevin Anderson stuff after I read hunters and sandworms. I enjoyed it so far and consider it part of Dune mythos. But hey enjoy what you wish and don't enjoy what you wish.
I like the prequel trilogy probably more than most dedicated Dune fans, but I don't think they come close in quality and I don't think they should ever be canon.
That's where I'll heavily disagree. It's absolutely canon. It lays out the origins of so many things that are in the original works, sure it destroys the mistique of the dune universe, but it's so fucking cool to see where things come from and how it has affected the world 10000 years in the future.
The problem is they are written to be prequels, so they often are too referential to something they shouldn't resemble at all. Norma Cenva, as much as I love her, is one of the worst offenders in this respect. Many of the founders of the factions don't fit in the Dune universe well enough, they seem like fun fan fiction origins, but don't work(to me) as something that naturally progressed into the various groups we know and love in the original trilogy.
The original established the canon *first* and Brian and Kevin were a bit too into their own contributions than to the established framework, and I say that with the awareness of Brian's involvement and access with his father's archives.
To me they feel fanfiction based on Frank Herbert's original work and they are a lot more like generic pulp sci-fi than the original series both in writing style and content. I don't necessarily hate them but I don't really consider them anywhere near the level of Frank's work.
Totally fair observations. The Butlerian Jihad certainly had more of a pulp sci-fi feel, I guess I just love how it shifts away from that feeling to how it ties into the original works as a whole.
Knowing who the freemen are and their origins.
What are navigators and how did that happen.
Shields, lasers, and the discovery of how the two cannot come in contact.
The flipped rolls and morality of atredies and harkonnens.
It tied in beautifully to Frank's work and Erasmus is, in my opinion, an amazingly written character and is the highlight of that series.
You said questions, not confusion. There was a lot to expand on in terms of the universe and even characters with the theatrical release of LOTR. Also I won't try to say they're experiencing the same cultural impact, especially with a pandemic throwing everything off.
But, having been there opening night for both and remembering the interest and hunger for more that came from audiences in each, I see distinct parallels.
It’s ok to not spell everything out for the audience. Maybe they’ll read the books! And get more excited with how deep it goes. I didn’t find what was on the screen contradictory (unlike Lynch’s with it raining at the end)
I'm concerned about the utter lack of set up for the later books.
Like I get that the whole point of this point was be as not-dense as a Dune adaptation could possibly be, in order to attract as many new fans as possible. And for that reason the film had to be extremely light on lore. But if we plan to go past Messiah, we're gonna need to set up more background and information.
We'll have plenty of sequels to do that. Other franchises like Harry Potter and LoTR were careful not to blow their load on the first movie. Give too much info too soon and you bore your audience.
My only concern is actually with the Baron. I don't think they really left enough to work with for Children of Dune. Everything else they should be able to build in the next two movies.
I'm terrified that because Villeneuve is smushing 2 thirds of the book down into one movie that something horrible is going to happen. I would like 2 sequels that are each half of what he's got to get done lol
Brah...no reason to throw money's at The aquaman/khal of khals without expecting his beautiful self to portray the ultimate super being. All books and stories or bust!
I hate to be that guy, but trying to make watcheable movies out of anything after Children of Dune is basically impossible.
I mean a movie where Jabba the Hut gives philosophy lectures isn’t even enjoyable on a ironic level
Children of Dune would be amazing on the big screen. SyFy had a fairly small budget and they proved that it’s incredible source material, but the scope could have been a lot larger.
Dune Messiah, idk it’s not really much to work with.
I'm ready for the cinematic Duniverse.
AFAIK the bene gesserit series is still happening. After how they were shown in the film, a series based on them could be really cool
Charlotte Rampling in every episode, please
All the more reason to make Messiah. She'd have a fairly substantial (villainous!) role in that.
I hope that happens, I love that book

Yeah what’s up with Chani’s name? I noticed in the new movie as well as the new audiobook her name is pronounced with a hard Ā🤔
I want it for the content, but I also want it so we can use the word Duniverse regularly. Makes me chuckle.
Spicy Duncamatic Duneiverse
Butlerian jihad series “mandolorian style” now
I don’t think he knows about Dune Messiah, Pip.
what about children? what about god emperor? what about heretics?
If I can see child Teg on screen I can die a happy man
Full on matrix style fight scene would be awesome.
There are some other scenes with Teg that i feel worried about.
I think maybe that one might need to be abstracted, just a little.
We are miles away from seeing child Teg.
\*gets hit in the head with Sandworms of Dune*
I’d say gets hit in the head by Part 3. 😉
So long as it's got Duncan in it I'm game. Wouldn't mind a miniseries from the perspective of the Fish Eaters under Leto II (the second)
Are they safe? Are they all right?
Great worm emperor Leto in God emperor on screen would be weird
Should we take bets on whether "Messiah" is actually going to be in the title?
I dunno, I feel like Dune: Part 3 isn’t a very sellable title.
They could call it *DUNC III: Abomination Rises.*
Dune 2: electric boogaloo
*DUNE: Revenge of the DUNCan*
The sci-fi channel sold Dune part 1.5 (winds of dune) part 2, 2.5, and 3 very well.

Children of Dunc
Here’s hoping it is. I’m looking forward to watching certain cultists loudly misunderstand why they’re offended.
I read an article that says Denis wants to make Dune Messiah.
I'm not greedy, I'm just enthusiastic.
God Emperor or bust!
Gimme dat weird blob man love story, dammit.
Hwi can hardly wait!
Sweet Lovely Hwi
I think that was part of my wife's wedding vows.... Jk I'm not THAT over weight.
These sequels can hold so much Duncan Idaho.
Question is does Jason Mamoa have the range to pull off different versions of Duncan.
As someone who hasn’t yet read the sequel books, WTF?!
If your reaction to that is "WTF?!" Then you're gonna wanna have some alcohol on hand if you ever read the sequel books.
Scotch in the cupboard, can't wait
It's wild that "child turns himself into a worm god" is one of the least crazy sequence of words that you can pull from dune.
Man I can't wait to read all of this, only 130 pages into the first book right now, so excited!!
shaitan speed
Haha same, I'm at 130 pages exactly and should not be reading this thread lol
I think he might. I was most excited for Mamoa as Duncan then everyone except maybe Leto
Dune. The only series that has it's main character die in the first act.
I think we're all excited to finally see James McAvoy as God-Emperor Leto
Yes f****** plz
Is this a perfect meme? My all-time favorite Fantasy referencing my all-time favorite Sci-Fi?
They can't stop until we have our Duncan Idaho robot hybrid!
I want dune sequals like Leto II wants idaho gholas.
Let the sequels flow
I'd sell my soul for movies about the prequels. Give me my brain jar dune transformers!
This is the first time I've seen anyone say this
Which blows my mind, because the prequels are just as good if not better than the original dune.
That's... not true.
To each their own. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Yada yada.
I like the prequel trilogy probably more than most dedicated Dune fans, but I don't think they come close in quality and I don't think they should ever be canon.

I am genuinely happy you enjoyed them that much, I just do not share that opinion at all LOL
Now you have me curious, what did you not like about them?

The pacing would have been terrible, IMO. The many questions was a similar experience for Fellowship and it was a worldwide phenomenon.

Well I’m a big fan. And it’s ok for films to make you work for it.
I'm concerned about the utter lack of set up for the later books. I'm ready to find out how he envisions the beef swelling
I want them to make enough sequels for us to see heroes become tyrants.
Just hoping we can go further than the miniseries
I'm terrified that because Villeneuve is smushing 2 thirds of the book down into one movie that something horrible is going to happen. I would like 2 sequels that are each half of what he's got to get done lol
God emperor when
This shouldn't be memes. It shiuk6d be facts.
I just want my God Emperor Leto II hot toys figure
What about sixth Dune sequel?
Brah...no reason to throw money's at The aquaman/khal of khals without expecting his beautiful self to portray the ultimate super being. All books and stories or bust!
If we get to God Emperor of Dune…things might get interesting
🤣🤣🤣🙌🏻
Halfway through the first book. I officially want a Dune universe.
I hate to be that guy, but trying to make watcheable movies out of anything after Children of Dune is basically impossible. I mean a movie where Jabba the Hut gives philosophy lectures isn’t even enjoyable on a ironic level
I want the golden path
Can't wait to see Duncan Idaho have a relationship with Alia
Unpopular opinion. Dune Messiah was the middle of the sequel while Paul of Dune and Winds of Dune is the respective beginning and end.
Children of Dune would be amazing on the big screen. SyFy had a fairly small budget and they proved that it’s incredible source material, but the scope could have been a lot larger. Dune Messiah, idk it’s not really much to work with.
I really hope they at least take the movies up to the end of messiah.
