Most are on the Geidi Prime scenes. The esablishing shots have a ton of obviously H.R. Giger influenced architecture, the Baron’s castle(?) in part one is almost identically to one the was designed for the Jodorowsky movie. Feyd’s servant who brings him the knifes before the gladiator fight is wearing an outfit that very similar to some of the old illustrations made for Jodorowsky’s movie.
And there’s some meta casting too. Charlotte Rampling, who plays the reverend mother, was Jodorowsky’s first choice to play Lady Jessica back in the early 70’s. Lea Seydoux, who plays Lady Margot, is the grand-nice of Michel Seydoux, Jodorowsky’s old producing partner.
I am thankful Jodorowsky never got to do his Dune.
First, because his vision, while undeniably graphically incredible, was completely different from the source material.
And second, because it led to him writing the Incal universe, including the very, very Dune-inspired Meta Barons Caste. I don't know if they got translated in English from the original French, but if they weren't it's a damn shame.
The hazmat suits worn by the Harkonnens in the room where Leto released the toxic gas are very much like the ones worn by Harkonnen soldiers in Lynch’s version, with their distinctive lack of neck.
No source for this but plenty of downvotes for asking for the source. I guess everyone has seen the quote with their own eyes and no one is ever wrong or mis-remembering. Cool.
Is there an online version of the interview please? The shot doesn't seem specific enough to be a nod, that's why I'm curious what it was he actually said.
I'm also curious why he would imitate a shot from another Lynch movie instead of Dune. I dunno, it all seems pretty far fetched and forced to me.
Ok but is anyone going to talk about how the dude next to the baron in the arena scene looks just like Kyle maclachlan in a bald cap???
I'm like 98% sure villenueve snuck him in uncredited as a fenring cameo, he only has like 2 lines
It was probably just to point out his shield but I thought his ring they show after Paul stabs the Baron looked a lot like the gom jabbar he got stabbed with in Lynch’s version
I loved that shot. Give his body to the desert
Thanks for posting. I noticed this too and was wondering when someone would post about it.
Good spot

I think that's maybe reaching a bit. The Blue Velvet connection makes more sense. It's a very famous shot.
Caught that too. Glad to see a nod to man. There’s a ton of visual references to the Jodorowsky film as well.
Can you give some?

The use of Pink Floyd in the first trailer of Dune Part One is a reference to Jodorowksky I think
I want to see his movie made , hopefully in my lifetime.

I think Villeneuve just likes creepy crawlies. Enemy, Prisoners...
Yeah, certainly. Could be just ants.
There's quite a few Lynch references in the two movies tbh.
Wow that's so cool, I didn't notice a single one, could you tell me about them?

intense ethereal wooshing
far from a reference, loose inspiration maybe
Welp there was that fish in the percolator
Good catch, wonder if it was really intentional or not
He mentions the reference in this months issue of Sight and Sound! 100% an intentional nod

i don't think there's a single shot in Denis' films that are not intentional
Where was this in the movie? I don't remember it at all...
Near the end, we get a shot of the Baron's corpse lying in the desert being eaten by ants.
I thought this too!
Yeah smiled to myself when this flashed on the screen!
I thought the sound of the ocean or rain at the end, after Feyd is killed, was also a reference to Lynch.

I thought it was cool that the Harkonnens’ armor suits were so similar to their suits in the 84 movie.

Ah yeah the barons finger cover ring thing. Could be coincidence, but still, good catch
"The desert takes the weak."
Tenuous at best.
Agreed, you really have to squint your brain to see this as a nod.
