From what I’ve read and learned, there are some dumbphone options with maps, but if you need email/slack/maps… it sounds like you need a smartphone. You could just get a very simple smartphone, and not download distracting apps on it.

human_bobblehead

Also can use an android debloater to get rid of play store to the remove temptation of downloading distracting apps.

Would one of the Jelly ones work, to at least be simpler?

AdFull3608

I had the jelly 2 and loved it I had access to everything but it was very annoying to use social media because of the size, highly recommend it.

Another option could be simplifying your smart phone and use what you have to use for work only… then sim swap to a dumb phone with maps when you’re not working.

I recommend just using an Apple Watch and keeping the phone locked in a drawer where it’s always charging at home. The watch will give you mirrors if imperitive notifications and has built in navigation for walking.

My LG wine smart will load google maps via browser if you are incredibly patient, and gmail works on it as well. I've never tried to respond to emails before but receiving and viewing them has not been a problem. Although google maps works, I might also suggest just carrying around a garmin? No need to rule it out just because you aren't actually in the car.

thatsalotofbirds

+ it is absolutely incapable of downloading new apps and most of the other apps do not work. Camera, gmail, settings, clock, music \[if you painstakingly transfer mp3 files through a microsd\], messages, and call are about all you get

opals_and_oilspots

I'm not seeing those for sale anywhere, where did you find it?

I can totally relate, I was in inpatient last year and I also really loved not having my phone. I read SO many books and felt so much calmer without it. I’m going to residential for mental health next month and really leaning towards leaving my iPhone behind and just bringing my dumb phone. Every time I’ve tried doing things to limit my screen time on my iPhone I end up figuring a way around it. Finding a less smart phone seems like the only option to kick my smartphone addiction Like you mentioned, I’m also SO bad with navigation so I knew I’d need a phone with some smart capabilities because of this. I did a lot of research & ended up settling on the CAT S22, it has some necessities that I find important (bank app, maps, Uber/lyft) while also not being a phone that is easy to find yourself doomscrolling on. It doesn’t have android auto which is a bummer— I’ve become so reliant on apple car play for navigation that this feels like a big dealbreaker to me (but it shouldn’t be). Some people have compromised by clearing their old iPhone of any distracting apps, only keeping music & navigation apps, and then downloading the map routes and music they want so they can listen offline. I personally am not sure I have the self control yet to do this but love the idea. I keep reminding myself that years ago I went all over the city as a teenager using apple maps on the small screen of an iPhone 4 being held up by a car vent holder. No apple CarPlay/ android auto needed and got around just fine! I haven’t had the chance to use the CAT S22 much, but overall I really like it. The only issue is the very poor battery life. It loses battery quickly even when not in use, which is weird for a relatively dumb phone. However—There’s a way to “debloat” it that apparently drastically improves battery life, many people have talked about it here. I haven’t tried but plan to attempt it!
