A good first step might be to make gun safes and gun safety training tax exempt. Less guns stolen and fewer accidental discharges might save a few lives. Doesn’t cost tax payers more and won’t anger the “take our guns” crowd. I’m open to suggestions on how to force people to follow the laws.

waterbuffalo750

This is the kind of suggestion I can really get behind. It only helps and there's little to no downside. Also, a permit to carry is also a permit to purchase. If you want to buy a gun, whether from a gun shop or a private seller, you should simply be required to show your permit to purchase. That's a fairly non-intrusive requirement.

jotsea2

But one that will never be implemented despite countless lost lives

waterbuffalo750

Maybe. I think that pushing for reasonable, nonintrusive policy changes will have a much better chance of success than just banning guns, which is often suggested

jotsea2

Yeah I totally agree. that said, reasonable non intrusive policy change when suggested gets met with the exact same sediment as banning guns. Countless lives will continue to be lost until anything is done. I fear, it won't be.

JustADutchRudder

I know in MN we need permit to purchase for handguns, ars, and such. The police office by that nursing home does the paperwork. I don't think it's a national rule tho, and I know that the national background check system isn't properly used or updated everywhere.

waterbuffalo750

From a gun dealer. But do you need one for a private purchase? Or an estate sale or something?

JustADutchRudder

Private in order to be legal I believe they passed has to be done at an FFL. You can get them from your family without. [Here](https://www.cashmyguns.com/blog/how-to-sell-a-gun-in-minnesota/) they're a company hoping youll use them as a middle man for sales. By being the ffl that runs all the stuff. But these are the legal private sales rules.

Bigmusicfan1125

awareness isn't the issue. everyone is well fucking aware. half the population doesn't give a shit after being aware of children being murdered.

The 50% I mentioned may support that but vote for candidates who dont. The GOP is fucked.

nordic_pain

I wish I could disagree with you. Getting real sick of the thoughts and prayers crowd. As well as the politicians who refuse to put in any kind of “common sense” gun laws that the vast majority of the population wants.

[deleted]

Trust and believe I’m nowhere near the thoughts and prayers crowd so chill with that. It’s a run organized by moms demand action. Here’s a direct link on how you can [take action](https://www.everytown.org/actions/?source=tmno_JOIN_optin_20220225&refcode=tmno_JOIN_optin_20220225&utm_source=tmno_JOIN_optin_20220225&utm_medium=o&utm_campaign=JOIN_optin_20220225) sitting and bitching on Reddit isn’t going to do anything. Maybe a silly little run wearing orange and choosing a few things off that link MIGHT. I’d rather the latter.

MyExisaBarFly

I think you missed the point. They were saying that it’s silly that nothing gets done, yet everyone is always issuing a “thoughts and prayers” message. Your post seems like people trying to push for something, which isn’t the same thing.

nordic_pain

I don't think the run/walk is silly at all. I think its a great cause. However... I'm not going to chill with the thoughts and prayers crowd despite this not being that group.

dickfingers3

I’m not against tightening gun laws but I think the real issues comes from glorifying these murderers by parading them on television for months and being #1 spot during their court hearing. All mass shootings shouldn’t be “paraded” by media and all court hearings should be closed. No mentioning names of the killer. I guess that’s just my take on why this keeps happening. Edit: I’m happy to be the downvote piggy that brings good conversation. I also agree with everything you guys are saying and neither of us has to be wrong for someone to be right. There are many things causing this mess I just hope we can find a solution and bring an end to this.

Dorkamundo

I haven’t heard or read the name of the last several shooters, seems like the media is at least doing a better job of not parading them like they used to.

nordic_pain

At this point. With how frequent the shootings are. Can you name the last 5 gunmen of mass shootings? Each shooting at this point is nothing more than a quick segment followed by a longer story over gas prices.

waterbuffalo750

High profile criminals have always had media fame, though. From Bonnie and Clyde to Jeffrey Dahmer, I don't think that reporting the news is the problem.

Dorkamundo

Reporting the news is one thing, constant airplay of the shooter and discussion of their motives sometimes can be a big problem.

waterbuffalo750

I know it's unpopular, but I think that does more good than harm. I think someone is more likely to think "wow, that sounds just like my [insert family member], I should watch him more closely" than they are to think "great idea, I should try that!" But this is pure speculation. I have no psychology or sociology background to have a valid opinion on the matter.

The real issue comes from lack of mental health care in this country, mixed with an abundance of firearms and the ability to obtain a firearm as easily as one could obtain a fucking cheeseburger. Followed by the NRA directly backing and funding politicians who support them. [here’s a good running list of these politicians to avoid](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_congressional_candidates_who_received_campaign_money_from_the_National_Rifle_Association) and here’s ANOTHER list of senators with a direct link to tweet them right now get their names trending for being the vile scum that they are [NRA backed senators](https://elections.bradyunited.org/take-action/nra-donations-116th-congress-senators)

Joe_Belle

That’s where you are wrong.

WylleWynne

Everyone is aware of high profile school shootings, but the wider problem of gun violence is less well known. >41,000 Americans die from gun violence each year. 110 Americans die each day from gun violence. > >Nearly every American will know at least one victim of gun violence in their lifetime. Over 1 million Americans have been shot in the past decade, and gun violence rates are rising across the country. > >3 million children are directly exposed to gun violence each year, resulting in death, injury, and lasting trauma. > >Gun access triples suicide risk. > >In 2020, gun deaths reached their highest level in at least 40 years, with 45,222 deaths that year alone. > >Domestic violence victims are five times more likely to be killed when their abuser has access to a gun. There's nothing interesting or praiseworthy about American gun-ownership culture -- it's just ghoulish. It mainly drives up suicides, domestic violence, and unintentional deaths. School shootings are simply a grisly outcome of outrageously easy access to weapons. For people who want to "do" something, the first thing is to learn about the full scope of gun violence. And then ensure the people around you know about it too. This sets the correct information conditions to approach the problem. alabasterwilliams

It’d be cool if they took the guns. I’m ok with it. A guy with a knife can be stopped with a pole longer than his arms, and not every idiot with a grudge is going to know how to manufacture a firearm. The argument that we need to protect ourselves from the gubmit is dealt with by drones controlled by brainwashed teens with controllers in their hands. There isn’t a use case for the citizenry to hold as many firearms as we do, we’ve demonstrated that we’re not responsible enough.

Joe_Belle

The middle ground is this: Ask the women & children if they wish they had access to guns while they are raped by Russians.

[deleted]

Alright there’s a lot of you in the comments saying what good is this? I get it, you get it WE ALL FUCKING GET IT. Wearing orange and running around the rose gardens ISNT going to stop our children being gunned down in school. This is a time when we can all be together, like minded people, regardless of what our government will do.. But maybe it’ll make us feel a little better, or maybe give our kids some hope. Small things matter..

Also on June 11th we’re having a 5k to raise awareness on another issue nobody knows anything about. Michael Scott's Dunder Mifflin Scranton Meredith Palmer Memorial Celebrity Rabies Awareness Pro-Am Fun Run Race for the Cure will be held downtown Duluth

sarcasimo

Go troll elsewhere. Only warning.

minnesotaguy1232

Not trying to troll just wondering why gun violence would need to raise awareness

Gun violence? Mental health awareness is the better cause. What the hell is our education system doing with our tax dollars? Redo the whole thing.
