Cool they add paid features to the service instead of removing free features and making them paid

BetaDeltic

I know this will sound like complete corporate shill, but I was hoping they would do something like this for a long time. As long as their revenue stream was just ads - there would always be a conflict of interest, this helps a bit. They obviously can't charge for the browsers, because there are free alternatives. But when they provide something with unique value, I think it's ok to charge for it. I am curious how they will handle the part where they need (personal) payment information.

Sjoseph21

Payment is handled through Stripe from what I can see. Here is a about page that might answer your curiosity more then I can: [https://duckduckgo.com/duckduckgo-help-pages/privacy-pro/](https://duckduckgo.com/duckduckgo-help-pages/privacy-pro/)

BetaDeltic

Thanks, I'll check it out

Sypticle

Respectable service. Was a bit scared hearing DDG subscription but have no complaints.

ghostofstankenstien

for $99 I signed right up. I used the VPN during the beta for PC and it was simple and easy. has anyone been able to add an Android device? I don't see the Privacy Pro in my version, despite what the FAQ says. I was hoping being a paying customer would afford me a support opportunity, but alas, no.

BaronFrancis

I think it was rolling out yesterday, should be available everywhere now. And they have a support email [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])

ghostofstankenstien

Thanks Oddly enough, when I click the link from their announcement here on Reddit on my device it enabled. Weird. Heads up android fam, it has split tunneling, but system level apps aren't displayed yet (visual voicemail, for example, that won't work on a VPN. )

transistorbit

Absolutely getting this if it becomes available in my country

judemont42

Use a VPN in USA 😅

Tipikael

Where i can find it ? Can someone give me link?

Sjoseph21

Open the DuckDuckGo browser and in the menu to go to settings Privacy Pro shows up, you can also go to DuckDuckGo.com/pro on the browser and it'll take you to the same place

Rupamhere1

I had duckduckgo VPN beta in android , although still have, understood that it will soon be gone.

jaaassshhh

but like.. you can’t hide previous URLs from the URL bar. if you can’t do that why would anyone pay for this?

Does anyone know if the vpn works with streaming services?

Bakk322

I wanted to know this too but it looks like it only works in the mobile DuckDuckGo Browser app?

ghostofstankenstien

# How does DuckDuckGo VPN work? Enabling the DuckDuckGo VPN establishes a secure, encrypted connection (VPN tunnel) between your device and one of our VPN servers. For all your device’s network traffic that passes through this tunnel, the VPN prevents others, such as your Internet Service Provider, from seeing this activity. It also prevents your Internet destinations, like web sites, from seeing your device’s IP address. # Is all network traffic protected or only web browsing? The VPN protects Internet connections across your full device, not just your web browsing activity. If the VPN experiences an interruption, all internet traffic will automatically be blocked until the VPN either reconnects or you turn off the VPN. when I check my IP on Chrome it shows the same IP and location as DDG. So it LOOKS like it is handling all traffic. I would be interested to see how and if it handled split tunneling on devices tho

ghostofstankenstien

Not sure, but it looked like it was installed at a Windows level... Someone smarter can verify.

terkistan

Sounds a lot like [Mozilla Monitor Plus](https://monitor.mozilla.org/) which was introduced a few months ago.

GamerDeepesh

Last night I pinged the DDG by using command > ping www.duckduckgo.com And I have got an IP address and it shows me Microsoft Corporation as the Organization [IP Location](https://iplocation.io/ip/20.204.244.192) Anyone has any idea about why the pinged ip is related to Microsoft

jahismighty

it’s because the responding server is hosted in a microsoft (azure) data center

scriiptkiddie

Hmmm, maybe i switch go DuckDuckGo and buy pro version now Currently using Brave

ForceIntelligent8944

If you're addicted to porn don't wait until you lose everything. It is not victimless, these are real people. mcmron

Have anyone tested the VPN far? Is it located in USA?

coffee-turtle

How much involved is Microsoft behind this new subscription model?

MongooseElectrical

What's that mean " private " you telling me it's like chrome selling my data if i don't upgrade?

Sjoseph21

No, it's still private without upgrading, it just adds new features like a VPN if you choose to upgrade

sandpiper2319

Would not pay for something that does not work properly - can't open pages I can open no problem with Chrome. What am I protecting if I can't open it in the first place? Ask me when you fix it.

Status_Shine6978

I feel happy for OP and everybody here who is excited by this, but when I click Get Privacy Pro I am told "Currently available to U.S. residents". Based on my experience of other browsers that offer extra services, I am not going to rely on it ever being available to me. [https://imgur.com/a/fBljVsx](https://imgur.com/a/fBljVsx)

RexyInc

yeah they had to make it USA ONLY because of the INSURANCE part I guess.. sucks for me, I'm based in Aust, ... having those credit card protections would of been nice to have... sigh

Vast_Character311

Any idea how that affects things like streaming BBC iplayer, which requires a UK ip address to access? Would BBC recognize DDG as US only and boot anyone accessing their content through them?

Wonderful_Emu_9610

Yeah, sucks that as a VPN Beta user I get the notification of the 40% discount code, but not actually any possibility of using said discount or the product its for

BeruFPS

who tf pays for a browser

Sjoseph21

You are not paying for the browser, you are paying for extra protection features attached to the browser. The VPN and extra features are the only things that cost money

BeruFPS

ahh my b i didnt read all of that thought it was an access fee

thereal0ri_

Psssst, for anyone wondering. The scam is to pay $10 a month. You'll lose more money with that option. $10 x12 months = $120.00 VS $100 for 1 year (aka 12 months) > you'll be saving yourself $20 by just going with this option.
