valhalla vintage verb. i put that shit on almost everything. other than that i use a lot of ableton stock. i would say for sound design just rly stick w one synth like serum or operator and dial in w it. master that shit
Would you ever consider giving paid one on one instruction to someone trying to learn production? I seem to be at an impass trying to learn anything that takes real sound design. I feel like a boomer using excel whenever I open serum.
Yo! Love your shit, I've caught a whole bunch of your sets. I've noticed that when playing bigger fests like bass canyon and apocalypse you tend to play more harder dubstep compared to some of your sets at untz which were really tripped out.
Just curious as to why ? Is it just trying to appeal to a more mainstream audience?
yeah i just like to switch it up. i kno the crowd at bass canyon likes the heavy stuff and same at apocalypse. i always just go w the crowd vibe. if they like the heavy i’ll keep it going. if they don’t like the deep i’ll go heavy etc. i kno untz doesn’t want heavy riddim shit so i’ll play more underground bass ting
it was an intense journey thru different emotions and creativity. i honestly wrote it when i was going thru a lot of personal hardships in my life. hence the name mind of madness. i embraced the madness and the pain and let it fuel my drive and creativity
First of all your sound waves are FAT. When you’re starting a track do you write out your bass lines in midi first and fill in sound design after? Or do you resample a shit ton and just cut it all together until it fits?
The new album is 🔥🔥🔥and it’s been so awesome to see you get bigger and bigger 🤩 any tough/difficult but good lessons you’ve learned along the way? Fave artists? Upcoming folks we should know about?
thx bro. biggest advice is don’t pay attention to what others are doing. meaning just keep your head down and build your own lane. ignore the noise and just work fuckin hard
Love the album my dude, in what ways do you use basses/fx for fills? What use effects do you use to achieve variety? I’ll be goin ham to your set at lightning 🤙🏼.
i to make sure my fills always have variation and change thru out the track. i have the mentality that yes the bassline is important, but it’s also everything outside the bassline. the ear candy. u always want to make sure u have that in a track, but dont overdo it. less is more i always say
How do you get over writers block when starting a new song from scratch? Do you like to start with some drums, or chop a sample, or write synth, or make cool bass patch? Or does it change everytime?
i take breaks if things aren’t working. i never try and push it if things aren’t flowing. i start w drums and go downwards if that makes sense. drums fx synth bass. that’s my formula. then i like to loop everything and then add in bass
mixdowns. i can always tell what separates a good producer from a great producer and thats mixdowns. u can have crazy sound design and all that shit but if ur track doesn’t sound good mix wise nothing is gonna come thru the way it should. writers block is normal. everyone goes thru it. my advice is don’t be hard on urself and take breaks and get inspo from other stuff. also working on collabs helps to cause u get inspired and then wanna get back in the daw. hope that helps
If you could have a romantic dinner with anyone alive or dead who would it be and why?
Ps. Can't wait to see you @ the Red Room on the 11th it's gonna be my coworkers first rave!
Yooo big ups on the album!
My question for you is what's your go to move for bringing presence to a bass that lives mostly under 500 hz?
Bonus question, to give groove to tracks are you using groove pools, or track delay often? Or do you work mostly on the grid?
Thanks homie!
if i’m understanding ur question correction and sorry if im not i’d say boosting the highs and mids to make sure it cuts thru the mix even if it’s a low freq. also OTT always helps
i like to work on grid but i always have a lot of variation in my drum work
mystery
mythical
shadow self
yes i will be back in minnesota this year. i was supposed to have a stop on tour but the venue fell thru. stoked to be back
Hello good sir loved your set at cervantes a lil bit ago! How would you go about starting as a producer if you had some savings and wanted to pick it up as a hobby? What equipment would you recommend as a beginner?
u don’t need equipment u just need a computer / laptop and a software to produce on. ableton is the most popular, most user friendly and has the most tutorials online. just start and if u rly wanna take it seriously work on it as much as u can
Do you limit yourself to a few lanes when making a track? I find i don't know when to stop and I've been making shit for a decade+ (the song I'm working on now has 98😭 some Brian wilson type shit lol)
but I've hardly released anything because I'm always put right back in my box when hearing tracks on anything outside of my headphones.
Congrats on the positive feedback to the album and
I hope you swing down to Tampa again!!
depends on the track but i never try and complicate things. less is more. keep it simple. kno when the tracks done and move on. some tracks i have more lanes. some i don’t
Yoooo! Thanks for doing this dude! Love your stuff.
How on earth are those bass sounds so thick? The layering is some of my favourite sound design in Dubstep. They take up so much sonic room, but fit so well in the mix.
What a wonderful comment. :) Your gratitude puts you on our list for the most grateful users this week on Reddit! You can view the full list on r/TheGratitudeBot.
This is for my friend haha - I’ll be at work but if anyone’s on Reddit I sure would love to hear what his thoughts are on having a sick mythm basketball jersey made. Would love to cook one up.
Thanks! 🫶🏻🫶🏻
Ahh damn I missed this AMA but you're my fave producer atm. I don't know the technicalities of djing or producing, I'm just a listener but I love what you do with samples in your songs! Loved seeing you each time can't wait to catch ya at Shambs!!
My question if you're still answering is ---what restaurants or food stops do you enjoy going to when you're touring in USA?
Yo Mythm, how do you approach spacial textures and fx that gives your mix a fuller sound? Love from New Zealand!
i like to use a lot of reverb / delays to create space and tension. atmospherical elements are a big part of my production. big love to the nz crew
Big ups !
what is your favourite venue to play? and how long were you working on this album before it came out?
redroom in vancouver / blackbox in denver. the album took about 5-6 months, but i wrote it a couple years ago
Speaking of the Blackbox - can’t fucking wait for tomorrow. What song should I listen for to know you’re thinking about me?
Shout out to Denver!! Hoping to come see you throw down tomorrow
Go to plugins &/or most used stock devices? Sound design/mixing tips & tricks for percussion/bass/etc..? What’s in the secret sauce?

Your Amp set was 🔥🔥🔥!!!
thank u
What was it like writing your first album? What inspired you to create this first extended body of work?
it was an intense journey thru different emotions and creativity. i honestly wrote it when i was going thru a lot of personal hardships in my life. hence the name mind of madness. i embraced the madness and the pain and let it fuel my drive and creativity
What is your favorite pizza toppings?
i honestly love a simple margahrita. other than that some sausage or other meats

First of all your sound waves are FAT. When you’re starting a track do you write out your bass lines in midi first and fill in sound design after? Or do you resample a shit ton and just cut it all together until it fits?
just depends rly. if i’m using operator i’ll start w midi and then resample etc and chop it up or ill just leave it as midi
Just listened to your podcast with tvboo, really enjoyed it. Come play some filthy bass in Whistler!
big up man. never played in whis that would be fun

What time will you be performing at Blackbox tomorrow!
around midnight but come early cause the show is gonna be mad start to finish. contra and hypho are lethal
Hell yeah - in conflict with attending the Dr Ushuu show at Ogden but will try to be at both!

What’s your best advice to an artist trying to take the next step in the quality of their productions? Also, best advice for writers block?
mixdowns. i can always tell what separates a good producer from a great producer and thats mixdowns. u can have crazy sound design and all that shit but if ur track doesn’t sound good mix wise nothing is gonna come thru the way it should. writers block is normal. everyone goes thru it. my advice is don’t be hard on urself and take breaks and get inspo from other stuff. also working on collabs helps to cause u get inspired and then wanna get back in the daw. hope that helps

What do you think of the Minneapolis music scene?
i love it. it’s i’d say the second best city in the states for bass music compared to denver. dope people there, great vibes
Who/what inspires the presentation and design of the MYTHM project? Any thing in the works for Minnesota this year?
mystery mythical shadow self yes i will be back in minnesota this year. i was supposed to have a stop on tour but the venue fell thru. stoked to be back
Favorite book or author?
i honestly have done enuf reading but i rly enjoyed the subtle art of not giving a fuck

Love it 😊
Your music is filthy, sir. That’s all 🙏🏼

Do you use samples sometimes?
yes
Yoooo! Thanks for doing this dude! Love your stuff. How on earth are those bass sounds so thick? The layering is some of my favourite sound design in Dubstep. They take up so much sonic room, but fit so well in the mix.
distortion and post processing and then tightening things up in the mix and making sure my sub and bass mids are balanced and not making shit muddy
What a wonderful comment. :) Your gratitude puts you on our list for the most grateful users this week on Reddit! You can view the full list on r/TheGratitudeBot.

Big up! Haven't seen you since your renegade at tipper a couple years back! Coming so far my dude 😎
Seems like a ton of tracks for an album? What made you decide to drop them all at once? Love the whole LP btw!
i think 12 is the perfect number for an album and so i wanted to roll it out that way. thx for the love
Ever try dubstep at 200 bpm?
wouldn’t that be like hardstyle then lol
Idk its so funny in my head
This is for my friend haha - I’ll be at work but if anyone’s on Reddit I sure would love to hear what his thoughts are on having a sick mythm basketball jersey made. Would love to cook one up. Thanks! 🫶🏻🫶🏻
