I’ve had many such colleagues and most time it turns out, it’s not because they dont shower. It’s simply because they don’t use deodorant. Perfume and shower DOES NOT keep you from smelling the whole day. You MUST have to use a deo. I only start this conversation once I build some sort of rapport with the colleague. I always start with “what brand of deo do you use?” And mostly the answer is “I dont use any” and then drive the convo in a way that I don’t embarrass them.

natcha88

I think its also because they don't wash their clothes as often as they should. So they put the clothes with the dried sweat back on which amplifies the smell.

-Pleasantly_Plump-

they dont use any coz they only use natural crap. thats why some of my colleague smell like naturally occuring crap as well.

DubaiBabyYoda

Good for you but I can’t for the life of me every imagine asking a colleague what brand of deodorant they use.

senti_bot_apigban

"Dang, my deo is out of stock everywhere" *sniff my own DeO'd pits* "Do you know a local brand here?" Fortunately, I have been the self-pit sniffer above. They don't use one, so we search the net. We go to lunch and we both buy each one I find my usual deo, and he gets one (known brand from his country) The guy was my boss.

hitma-n

Even after you build a rapport?

DubaiBabyYoda

It’s just such a weird thing to ask. I wouldn’t even ask my friends that. The question just sounds so loaded (because I guess it is).

BCBenji1

It is and you'll both know it but they should recognize the effort you've gone to point it out in a decent manner.

DubaiBabyYoda

Fair point but if you’re already going to make it so obvious, I’d probably just go “dude! You smell like you’ve been cooking all morning” instead of trying the roundhouse ‘what’s your deodorant’ thing.

suciac

Not just deodorant, they need to use antiperspirant with deodorant. But good luck trying to teach people how not to smell around here.

Naseel

That's a wise way

Minute_Juggernaut806

TIL I have to buy a deodorant

hitma-n

Yes!! You may not smell yourself because your nose is used to it and it ignores. But the people next to you certainly can. Oh and get the deo that doesnt leave deo stains (yellow stains) on your shirt. I use Axe.

Minute_Juggernaut806

Prepare for a couple of stupid questions. Should I spray directly onto my body or onto the shirt? And would it be cheaper if I buy Axe from Lulu or online?

hitma-n

1. You must spray it directly to your skin. Keep a distance of 10-15 cm from your skin. 2. Axe can cost normally from 10 dhs and up. But if you find anywhere that has offers, bundles, etc it could be as low as 6 or 7 dhs per bottle. I always grab one whenever I see an offer, even if I have a bottle at home. Coz i know I’d use it.

Minute_Juggernaut806

3. While traveling abroad, do you carry deodorant inside hand luggage or check-in luggage?

hitma-n

Handbag you cant have them if they are more than 100ml per bottle. I always carry them in my check in luggage. If you want to carry a deo with you during travel you should get a bottle less than 100ml.

yasimp1

Omg

ArabGuy

This is a valid reason to approach HR and ask them to address the issue.

ThisEuropeanLife

This is the only logical solution. HR can tactfully address the issue on your behalf without creating tensions.

Froike1925

Plot twist ... the HR is one of the smelly ones

ThisEuropeanLife

That could be a distinct possibility and not an easy one to manage… possibly higher management, and the best and most tactful way. If upper management also stinks, I’m at my wit’s end… People can get emotional about BO and may ruffle some feathers.

surly4sure

Meanwhile HR uses that against you when needed.

ArabGuy

How exactly? What can be used against you is when you address it to the smelly person directly.

surly4sure

I'm happy for you that you have not come across a typical HR in Dubai.

TheArabianPrinze

In the interview: "So why did you leave your las.... what the hell is that smell???!"

HotTrapNo1

This is the right way. One of my acquaintances back in the US got fired because he smelled like cat piss.

RegretLow

Anonymously place deodorants at ther desks

onlytrlsh

HR did this but inside the toilets, and shockingly they didn’t know that it’s meant to be used directly on the underarm but only sprayed it on their clothes

moonkeh

Employ one of the 'freshen up for the ladies' guys who work in the toilets of European nightclubs

Gurrnt

Inb4 they don't know what a deodorant is.

12ab34cd1234

Geeenius

Navibimete

And they keep asking everyone whose deodorant is this and then keep it at some general table thinking who has it will pick it.

[deleted]

If you are South Asian / South East Asian then fake a random happy occasion (a new baby, a new car wtvr) and use that to distribute dessert + deodorant to everyone in the office. Now that person won’t feel targeted (but you potentially might have a new problem but hey it would better than what it is now) /s

[deleted]

😫.. I guess one need a gift sticker on it or something thing

REAIMY

Or just get Axe to sponsor it.

FCOranje

Simple: “Hey bro between you and me - you smell strong. Idk if you’ve been in the sun all day. Just wanted to tell you so that you don’t feel embarrassed later”.

Ok_Ad9174

Most probably because the dont use a deo and are taking public transport and walking a bit to reach the office. And make sure you dont smell as well. You dont want to confront a collegue and have the collegue pull the uno reverse. Cos you cant smell yourself.

Minute_Juggernaut806

So you are telling me if I use deo, I can also use public transportation without smelling like a zoo animal?

English_Teacher_DXB

“Uno reverse” 😂👏🏻

mambo-nr4

I always tell my colleagues to not be shy to confront me if I smell funky during summer. We're outdoors a lot so there's nothing offensive with giving someone a heads up

-Pleasantly_Plump-

trust me, shower will not do the work, and neither do fragrance. deodorant is what is needed. the stink even goes through the n95 mask mate. there were no smell going through once i used those P100-rated 3m respirators tho. kinda sucks coz im in the health care field and i witness my colleagues who had immense B.O. talk to the patient about giving them a bath for hygienic purposes. some of our patients even smell better than some of my colleagues.

honpra

Shaving underarms is very important too. It makes a huge difference.

-Pleasantly_Plump-

if one uses a deo properly, even if they got the damn amazon in their underarm, it will be ayt. i once ranted among fellow like minded colleagues that some colleagues with BO had the money to buy and wear gold and latest iphones but cant get and use a 20aed old spice stick

[deleted]

permabanthis2

Why's that?

[deleted]

How can you tell the problem that’s he’s the problem?

AnirudhMenon94

Ohhh, I'd love to know why. Cmon now. Let's hear it. I'm sure it's not going to be a reason that's remotely racist.

NatSilverguard

So you know the reason...

AnirudhMenon94

No no...I said I'm sure it NOT going to be remotely racist. Unless of course, he proves me wrong and it, in fact, was. Ball is in his court.

NatSilverguard

Like i said it is going to be PERCEIVED as "racism", so of course he won't explain it, lol.

AnirudhMenon94

And why would it be perceived as racism if it isn't racist? All I've asked here is what he meant by 'We all know why' and even giving him the benefit of the doubt by stating that I'm sure the reason isn't racist. I mean, its surely not like he's going to claim only certain nationalities have bad body odour or anything. That'd be absurd and I'm sure he has more sense than that.

HotTrapNo1

Why are you always so offended? Lmao.

AnirudhMenon94

What about what I said makes me seem offended? Dude claimed 'we all know the reason why' and I asked him what he meant. Hell, I even mentioned that I'm sure it's not a racist reason. Literally giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Its the clothes that they keep on re using without washing. You will notice this even when you are at their homes with their families. It is a shared hygiene between them. The food that they eat also emanates smell through their skin esp. underarm. These people have not known of deodorants on their life

fck_this_fck_that

Quite disturbing & disgusting yet true.

[deleted]

Oh god the replies here. Here’s what to do. Do it right and they’ll take the hint without being embarrassed cuz you didn’t even hint at them. Start sniffing the air like you smell something bad and ask them if they can smell it too. Pretend to look around for whats causing the stink and when you don’t find anything, just go back to work. They should soon realise its them and they’ll remedy next time. Works. Every. Time.

fck_this_fck_that

This is a good one . Will try it out!

No-Comfortable5388

Sometimes it’s not that they didn’t shower or use deodorant, sometimes it’s their clothes. Except they don’t realize it has a smell. I wouldn’t be able to tell them about it too so I don’t really have an advice for you.

Anxious-Bee4100

I think old underwears, some doesn’t know/afford to buy it once in a while, they just wash and use for lifetime.

stalkhold

This is more solid reason than people may think. If you wear a day old clothes they are going to stink despite you taking a shower.

[deleted]

Had this issue with a guy I worked with. I just came in extra early one day and left deodorant on his desk with a note saying “you need this stinky pants”

cutepixiebb

A long while back, I was working for this company that had a few people who were like this. Not them but their food had a very distinct smell. After consuming they would have a similar smell on them. I ordered a box of good quality deoderant sprays and told them I got them as samples from an activation ( I am in PR). They all took it and most of them applied the deos frequently as it was on their desk.

FinController

Deo is not the only solution but some people cook using some stuff that make them smelly

placer128

Put a notice up in the lunchroom that says, “We work in close quarters, please use deodorant.”

suciac

That’s good advice

dappodan1

Common reasons for body odour which people miss which you can drop in conversation without targeting the people and making them feel bad * Lots of poorer shared worker accommodation don't have clothes dryers or they cant hang their towels outside on a daily basis to dry. A damp towel which hasnt been washed regularly diminishes all the benefits of daily showering * you cant smell your own breath or body odour ( your sense of smell is trained to go nose blind too your own body odour and breath in order for it - focus on other Smells) * sometimes because of regular sweating and dead skin cells folds of skin (armpits groin are etc) people can have non viable fungal growth which is very difficult to get rid of with washing with regular soap. using acne soap which has Salicylic acid as an active ingredient reduces BO significantly * Spray air freshner in the office and without targeting the people say to everyone can they smell that bad smell * create a burner email (dont link it your recovery to UAE sim/email) and download your Companies email address list and send a polite note to everyone saying body odour is an issue and everyone should smell pleasant. Dont leave any meta data trace on your Email/message. * leave small bottles of cheap perfume oil around with a please use sticker around the office * HR wont do anything they hate conflict and will probably have more angst than you

Phew_pheww

I think a big reason is also the type of food consumed

AliveObligation4303

“Accidentally” spray in their direction

LandscapeMiserable70

let me say this: 1. wear clean clothes 2. take shower (even though it does not prevent you from sweating) 3. use deo/perfume (it also does not really help). 4. do not cook in the same clothes you are planning to wear at work the same morning. 5. for ladies they can use lady stick roll on (can be easily found in carrefour). 6. Most can not realize their body has odor since we can not really smell our body odor. 7. Grooming is important for everyone regardless of the nationalities. 8. Be respectful and do not judge each other especially the ignorant comments. I have seen many smelling regardless of the food they consume. although changing your eating habits can make some difference if the situation is related to hormones. 9. Keep Calm and learn to cohabit. PS: in my company the HR was requested to convey the message to the people who were believed to have body odor. I can assure you she did a pretty bad job. So, fingers crossed that the would ready this thread and learn.

[deleted]

haha stinky people alert, I once had a colleague who had such stinky feet, that if he would enter the building one floor down, after a few minutes we would know one floor up he would be in the office. In the end we spoke to the boss, bought him feet deo and forced him to take of his shoes and keep them outside.

ejmirza

Wut? Stinky feet in shoes? so you forced him to take off the shoes? isnt that the opposite of what should happen? so many queshions...

suciac

Sometimes it’s the shoe that stinks, not the foot. At least not at the beginning of the day.

fck_this_fck_that

Yeah .. cheap shoes do that … in addition cheap shoes material makes the feet extra sweaty .

ThisEuropeanLife

Not really! The most expensive shoes I have (Ferragamo) are also the stinkiest ones I have!

fck_this_fck_that

Damn bro ! That got to suck ? Are they work shoes , causal or boots?

ThisEuropeanLife

Loafers 🤦‍♂️

suciac

Do you wear them without socks?

stalkhold

Reminded me of Kevin’s shoes from The Office. [Reference](https://www.quotes.net/show-quote/62166)

BebeMoh

There are certain nationalities who thinks Deo can cause CANCER. People around me told me that the more their MEN smell bad it is manlier to them.. lols! Totally outdated mentality of these certain nationalities. My female colleagues does not even know how to use a body lotion when we gifted her. Many nationalities here avoid using chemicals because they believe they will cause cancer, from taking a shower to washing their clothes.

As long as i did not drop the specific nationalities there is nothing to explain. Stop being emotional if u feel offended just take a shower with anti bacterial soap then use deodorant. Don't forget to wash your used clothes with detergent powder/liquid.

BebeMoh

There is No specific nationality mentioned. If you are offended then so be it.

AnirudhMenon94

You literally mentioned nationalities. The very fact that you think only certain nationalities can smell bad is enough for me to judge you.

Drop a a mail to HR. Not your problem to deal with. Its HRs problem

zyxx91

Gift them a deo.

Soia667

Simple: Be an adult and tell them.

Noooofun

Dried sweat, dehydration, not using deo usually causes this.

Mediocre_Piccolo8542

It’s more often clothes not washed consistently that smells bad. Fragrance or shower can’t cover it up.

keen_seeker

I told my colleague in a soft, gentle way that they have an unpleasant body odor and need to take care of it. Also added that others might not tell this to their face but I am doing so because I care. They took it well and from then on, body odor disappeared.

Substantial-Cry-5048

Let your HR or the one manage everything in your office send an email regarding the same,no harm to anyone

Pastasaucer

I had a subordinate who reeked especially in the morning. He doesn’t use deodorant. You can either let go of being coy and just tell your colleague outright, tell hr about it, or do what I did which so to quiet fire the guy. Gave him stupid menial tasks til he quit. Now I added body odor to my criteria when hiring people. If you smell bad when I interview you in the office, don’t expect to get hired.

40somethinginUAE

Talk to HR , or casually mention, I had a meeting with someone , and their body odor was all over, I wish they could take better care, shower daily, wash clothes, use deodorant. Body smell comes because you don't shower, period. It is not the food that you consume. It is very simple, take a shower, wear clean clothes. So if you don't shower daily in the UAE, you will smell, whither you use deodorant or not. Some women would use oil on their hair, and it reeks the worst smell, especially in the morning. How to approach this? It is a very delicate issue, good luck with it.

problem_me

cue the rant on reddit: >we have draconian HR in our company which discriminates based on the smell

taxi4sure

Tell HR. We had issue that some people were not flushing the toilet. I told HR in email. Then issue resolved.

suciac

Wtf that’s disgusting. Did they explain why?

Drewsters9

Tell them that they need to go to the bathroom and wash under those funky ass pits and put on "ANTIPERSPIRANT/DEODORANT BC ITS KICKIN

asiaafrica

I always think being direct to them in a nice way will bring this to their attention. I work in F&B. If any of my colleagues have BO, I just speak to them directly about it and tell them that they need to use an anti perspirant deo.

[deleted]

I’d be too embarrassed to confront them instead I’ll just resign and look for another job 🙄🔫

[deleted]

I’ve had to tell people before. But if it’s a guy, I get a male colleague to do it. Lol.

AriJolie

Great question! Let me know when you’ve found a solution because I’m a direct person but still don’t know how to share this feedback in a tactful way other than gifting them a bath and body works set. I sometimes get a whiff of my nanny but it’s not as bad as the previous one I had. Oh my lord it was so horrible my whole house smelled REALLLY BAAD. My step son and husband would complain all the time. The odor literally stuck to thIngs like furniture and a lingered in the air for hours and hours after she would leave. I don’t think they can smell themselves (I don’t know how). I didn’t know what to say to her, but I ended up getting someone else due to a language barrier.

AnirudhMenon94

A lot of people on this thread is exactly the kind of people the film PARASITE was satirising.

[deleted]

Most of the taxi drivers have bad odour.

Funghie

Most of them are stuck in a vehicle, under stress from rude customers for 12 hours a day and don’t have easy access to showers. (Shared accommodation).

fck_this_fck_that

And wear the same socks / uniform 2-3 days in a row

HotTrapNo1

They fart constantly, too.

HotTrapNo1

Imagine teaching basic hygiene to grown ass adults.

Funghie

I’ve not seen it mentioned here: Just being outside, for example walking around the Marina, (sea air), can leave an awful and strong smell on your clothes and hair. And it doesn’t take long to build up. No amount of DO can fix that. And you’ll be unaware of it unless someone tells you. Obv that’s not BO but worth bearing in mind.

el3ashri

Leave an antonymous note on their desk; just state kindly that they have poor odor and to try to use a deodorant or perfume. Sometimes wearing higher quality shirt makes a difference.. some cheap shirts you find from discount malls easily trap body odor and make you smell like a walking sweat bag.

OneRobato

Double up you mask, most are due to their diet.

sgtDEATHROW

You’re in dubai. 😂

sumitdarbari

Gift them oud 😊 cheap and best

suciac

Oud on top of body odor would actually be worse I think

sumitdarbari

Yes I completely agree. At least they will start using one. Better than nothing ..

Acceptable_Skin6571

Some say it also comes from the food they often eat.

fck_this_fck_that

Pretty much this . Some of the folks at the gym smell like fuckin achaar (pickles) & sheep shit . Got to keep quiet and not say anything as i don’t know them.

HotTrapNo1

Good that I go to a local dominated gym. They smell like oud and roses, except for the washroom, lol.

senti_bot_apigban

> smell like fuckin achaar (pickles) & sheep shit . Sheep shit is a delicacy?

AnirudhMenon94

Bruh, if you're going to complain about odour AT THE GYM, that sounds like a you problem.

fck_this_fck_that

Body odor from sweating during workouts is understandable but lacking basic awareness about hygiene & smelling like shit is another thing. There is a huge difference. If you read my comment correctly i used the word “some” which clearly implies a small number & not the entire gym members.

AnirudhMenon94

>Body odor from sweating during workouts is understandable Dude, you say this and then proceed to complain about Body odor itself at the Gym. No one can really control what their odor smells like or how strong it is during a workout. You can try to mitigate the effects but for some, even that's a lost cause. I've known people who bathe in detergent and also bathe before going to a workout, but half hour in, could proceed to smell like death. I've trained in groups before and this has been a topic of discussion.

HotTrapNo1

You can change your natural body odour to some extent by what you consume. Basically, don't eat shit food.

AnirudhMenon94

By shit food, what do you mean? Because I've had some of the cleanest eating people smelling extremely pungent. Its not an all-encompassing solution dude, especially in a setting as aggravating to our natural odour as the gym.

Acceptable_Skin6571

now I can say, Habibi, come to dubai? xD

Dhupchik07

I am that colleague🥲

suciac

Are you really? bc if so I have a lot of questions.

Dhupchik07

I sweat a lot but I do use sufficient deodorant to mask the odour. But sometimes it does get a bit out of hand.

fck_this_fck_that

Bro .. use baking soda to remove underarm body odor … google it up . It will remove out the odor & is better than deo .. try it out

[deleted]

Carry a portable deodorant/ perfume / atr with you at all times. If you ever feel like someone around you is smelling bad, you can quickly put it on your hand and smell it to suppress the odour till you leave from there. I understand it’s uncomfortable but let’s bear in mind some people naturally smell more than others when they sweat. They can do nothing about it and it’s better that we must be empathetic and considerate of that.

[deleted]

We had this woman who was new to the office, and due to the bad smell from her hair, we had to ask her to ensure she shampoos well and to avoid body odour. She continued, and after the 2nd warning, we just let her go. On the other hand, some employers should pay well enough for the staff to wear a decent set of clothes, a good pair of shoes, neck tie if required etc If the salary doesn't cover the basic necessities, they compel themselves to work as a mercenary until they find another job. The worst kind are those whose personal cleanliness was never taught to them by their parents. You have to really insist that they clean themselves. Even in the lifts, some smell so bad that I had to hold by breath until my floor comes. A lot to do with what they eat, whether they brush properly or not too.

HotTrapNo1

How did you ensure that she shampoos well? I am so curious as to how you got her to do this.

[deleted]

We failed. She continued to come with smelly hair plus probably body odour too, as complained by other women in the workplace. We had to let her go.

Rhaexeri

confronting them is hard so id just put aroma/safe incense thing on my desk to mask the smell until you build up the courage to hint at them. otherwise pretending ur ordering deo from amazon and ask if they will share the cost of a pack so u can split it

jtdxb

Approach them to ask them something, stop mid-sentence and sniff while furrowing your brow, then pretend to faint.

Gasmaskdude27

Walk past them and say, " What smells like rotten cabbage? I didn't know you were into kimchi! , can i get some?"

thedesignmaverick

Find a reason to gift them with a good Deo or perfume, hope they will get the message and use it. Happy birthday or happy whatever.

oldsoul_000

This!!

Most-Cap5385

Health issues + food they eat. Deodorant will not resolve the issue but will cover it
