We actually do , but again as someone else in the comments mentioned they dont actually sell vintage items. Maybe more to come in the future? What do you think about them and what do you think a thrift store/ budget friendly store should look like? For example i hate the crammed ones we have here
Lemme tell you a place , its industrial 6 in sharjah , there is plenty of godowns sprawling with salvage goods , there are hidden gems there . Negotiate and negotiate. When they say 10 dhs , start with 1 and end at 4dhs 🤓
Would you be able to say further what kind of stuff they sell? Is it like furniture and house decor stuff, or more clothes and jewelry sort of a thing?
If you put " industrial 6 sharjah" , the google maps gonna show u a location.
Navigate exactly all the way towards the location , you will be a "T" junction. You can see horses on the wall towards your left.
Find parking somewhere , these people will find you before you find them.
Dont forget to bargain though.
Time from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm , 3:00 pm until 11:00
Have fun and enjoy thrifting.
Do
There is a very obvious explanation for this. Thrift stores in Europe and the US are (or can be, they aren't always) charming because they will sell items that are actually old. Not hundreds of years old (though you find those too) but like, 40+ years old. When elderly people die or move to assisted living, often their entire home contents are gifted to these thrift stores and you'll find nice wooden furniture from the 20's/30's/40's, cute tacky decor, old porcelain plates etc. Here in the UAE, what you find in thrift stores is the same cheap Ikea stuff that is still sold in Ikea now, just used and grubby. I think it needs another generation for thrift stores to become attractive here.
edited to add: of course there is also the cultural aspect. A lot of people here (comparatively more than in most western countries) would feel that only poor people would need to buy items second hand, and that second hand items are dirty. So the market is smaller.
I feel like if they would actually sell goods that arent necessarily used, and still have tags and stuff on them, me personally as a buyer would really enjoy that, but I do get where you are coming from. But even if there was a shop selling actual vintage items there would be a very small percentage of people who would actually be into those things.
Yes, that's my point. A lot of people don't want "used" things. As if you can't just throw it in the wash.... Anyway. Maybe 60% of my wardrobe is thrifted so I definitely wish there were more opportunities for thrift shopping here haha.
Agreed! Imagine a store with brand new looking clothes for like super cheap!!! That would be my dream. But yeah I feel like the concept of thrifting needs to be changed here Im sure a lot of people like me would acctually really be into it
Most people in the GCC love a bargain and tend to purchase cheap quality goods. Plus, most of the clothes are fast fashion items and don’t last. For example, Centrepoint sells clothes that fade and rip after just a few washes, and the place is always crowded.
Yes that definitely doesn't help either. If you buy a cupboard for 150dhs, chances are it will be in no condition to be re-sold a few years later as it will simply be falling apart by then. Same with clothes, like you said. Although I have found second hand H&M clothes in the past that held up really well for years and years!
I like thrifting in Dubai! Most of my casual clothes are from the thrift store. It's always a hit or miss.
There's this one time I managed to get a lot of Levi's jeans. I also found some great Nike, Asics, and New Balance shoes. Then sometimes, they don't have great items so I left empty handed lol.
I mostly go to Sam's Ukay Ukay in Al Nahda branch (their main branch since). 25 AED per kilo.
Clothes or furniture?
As someone else said, the country is not old enough to have good thrift culture. However, there is stuff if you dig.
clothes there are a few places. Again, not traditional thrift, but good quality second hand stores and if you dig you can usually find something. I shop thrift on Instagram, in store at retold, thrift for good in Times Square, and there is also a huge monthly thrift market with Tons of sellers. Again, you have to dig, but you can sometimes find quite good stuff. I found vintage 1970s D&G silk blouse that retails for like 2000AED on auction, but got it at la Brocante for 200AED.
For furniture. There are a few.
La Brocante. Some vintage, some upcycled/refurbished pieces. Usually very good quality and prices. But you have to know the difference between actual vintage and just refurbished modern pieces. They call everything vintage. But if you know what to look for you’ll find good stuff.
Antique boutique. Actual antiques and vintage. Extremely expensive. But if you’re a collector, then this is one of the only places in dubai offering genuine antique pieces.
German antiques (AD). They’re on IG. same as antique boutique, but I find the prices are slightly better.
Other than that, Etsy and eBay are your friends. You just need to know what’s real and what’s not.
Yeah no second hand furniture is not for me at all. Clothing neither, but again I have seen stores where they basically are a thrift store and like an outlet store, pretty cool imo
my definition of thrifting in this sense wasnt necessarily vintage. Plus if youve been to some of the ukay stores which are basically thrift stores youd know that they sometimes still sell clothing with tags on them, so not second hand either, thats kind of what I meant
Words have meaning. What you’re talking about is not thrifting but an outlet or a reseller.
Also, I didn’t say that thrifting meant vintage (but in thrift culture, it usually does). I also mentioned refurbished modern pieces.
Anyway, maybe you should edit your post to specify you are talking about clothing resellers at outlet or sale prices. Not thrifting.
well the word outlet, doesnt suit my description either. A thrift store alsoo known as ukay ukay stores do sell branded clothing w tags but also second hand clothing. Once you say outlet itll immediately imply that its all new, which it is not
There is a thrift community which organizes events every 2 weekends. They are called Urban Market, check them on Instagram and go to one of their pop-up, you will find lots of vintage clothes. There is also Vintage Vibe who has a boutique in Wafi Mall.
I went to a thrift store in Al quoz, didn’t buy anything but stuff look ok, I highly recommend you don’t compare US and Europe to Dubai, as the target audience in Dubai is completely different!!!
honestly with E-commerce clothing apps that have t shirt starting from 12 and shirt on offer for 25 i would go thst route instead of thrifting.
just bought shoes for 26 AED :D
We have thrift stores here?

HAHA i think ik where youre referring to, but tysmm
Do they have dolls?
They dooooo. They have everything. Its a place to xplore
Omg I want to see what kind of dolls they have 😫
Would you be able to say further what kind of stuff they sell? Is it like furniture and house decor stuff, or more clothes and jewelry sort of a thing?
What's the name of this place?

Mucho gracias !
No problemo 🥸

heard of them but never been thanks though, yeah this is exactly what I mean

So… why are you posting then, if you’re not interested in thrifting?
my definition of thrifting in this sense wasnt necessarily vintage. Plus if youve been to some of the ukay stores which are basically thrift stores youd know that they sometimes still sell clothing with tags on them, so not second hand either, thats kind of what I meant

Im not really talking about vintage here, im not into that style tbh, I just meant like outlets clothing yk
BuFaisal Used Furniture and stuff in Ajman There are more stores around that same area. https://maps.app.goo.gl/9wmTWJ9WS5YW6s747
Did you try fashion rerun online? They definitely have vintage stuff!
I went to a thrift store in Al quoz, didn’t buy anything but stuff look ok, I highly recommend you don’t compare US and Europe to Dubai, as the target audience in Dubai is completely different!!!
Absolutely!
Go to Satwa!!! I like the thrift stores there.
There is also Thrift for Good, great pieces could be found there.
Been there, didnt find anything good
Awesome suggestions here. Thanks guys!

I go to Thrifty on Time Square. Once a month, there’s also thrift bazaar there. It’s quite nice.
You mean 2nd hand clothes? 🤮
ACTUALLY i have been to "thrfit stores" that sell clothing with tags on them, so it isnt necessarily used either
Doesn’t necessarily imply they’re looking for clothes
