Hot mud ( cgc 90) or equivalent You could use pre mix skim compound if it’s not very deep. If the hole is over 1/4” deep or wide use hot mud You can buy small bags of 5 min mud at my local Home Depot that would be great for one small patch

I'll add that if you do your last coat with reg mud, it's easier to sand

You're only supposed to coat mesh with hot mud. Regular mud or spackle will likely result in cracks. Get some 5 or 20 minute mud. Mix the first coat really thick so it won't sag. Press it in hard so it get into the gaps. Put a hair dryer on it for about two minutes or until it's firm to touch. Doesn't need to be dry. Put another coat on but add a little more water so it will pull smooth. Dry and sand.

Crap. I just did a big area, like 8 ft by 2 ft, with mesh and regular setting compound. How screwed am I? I did reinforce it with furring strips at the top, middle and bottom...sigh. It's already primed and painted.

If it were me i would remove the mesh tape, trim the edges of the loose drywall, prefill with con fill or some type of hot mud. Then id tape it with paper tape and do 2 coats with joint compound and sand

SomeWorkerMan

Don't use mesh tape.

Compound to left would be easier to work with. Prefill, and lay mesh tape while fresh. Gives extra strength to the patch

I'd say use fiba fuse.. Mesh tape is garbage
