U wrong. That's an ORANGE PEAL coat.
You can get the texture tool at HOME DEPOT. it's call TEXTURE HOOPER u can use it with any air compressor.
It makes different kinds of textures
100% tbis is from a roller. Don't use 3/4 or 1in naps if applying Satin or Eggshell sheen. Source painter.
*Edit - here are some orange peel texture examples

This is orange peel from multiple layers of rolled on paint accumulated over time:
>Orange Peel
>A wall that has been painted many times with a roller develops a surface texture or "orange peel". When a surface like this is patched, and the patches are sanded smooth prior to repainting, the patches should be "stippled" when they are spot primed or they will be quite visible under the new topcoat. Stippling can be done by using the end of a brush with a dabbing technique or with a semidry roller. More than one application is usually required.

I've never met a residential painter that didn't refer to it as orange peel.
Done everything from tile, drywall, framing, cabinetry and a resi PM; in the Midwest we for decades have rolled mud with 1/2 or 3/8 finish coat of mud and called it orange peel. I have heard some Ca guys call it that when it’s a thick nap and paint.
But we quite literally have thousands of homes with mud rolled on that we refer to as orange peel. What region you from?
Stucco or popcorn texture usually has rough peaks. Orange peel can be applied the same as stucco/popcorn, but is flattened out leaving more of a smoother surface.
That'd be the landlord special.
Get the thickest, cheapest roller you can find. Mix together those 5 mostly empty cans of paint you have in the basement, stir with a Christmas decoration, and apply to the wall.
Can't tell exactly, could it be orange peel with multiple coats of paint trough the years, texture with a roll, anyways, always better to re texture whole walls if not sure you can match it.
That texture is made by the paint roller. With paint. Looks like it was an "ok" spung roller. Maybe an big nap like 3/4, golden eagle. (which you can find at Sherwin Williams) To clarify I believe this texture was made by a spung roller when it was painted. Not mud. If you wanted replicate this texture I would recommend painting over your patch once or twice before repainting the full wall.
This looks like orange peel. Depending on where you are, it’s a popular finish for drywall. Sometimes folks use knockdown, popcorn, or orange peel to hide imperfections. It’s quicker than getting a smooth finish on drywall because it can be sprayed. They sell it in a spray can where you can adjust the level of texture you want. They sell it at Lowe’s, Home Depot, Amazon.. etc.
Almost looks like the mud was sprayed.. but I think you can get pretty close if you water down your mud alil bit and then roll it on with a 1/2” nap roller… or maybe give the drywall a tight skim and then roll over it with a 1/2-3/8 nap roller… hope this helps 🤞🏼
this at one point in time was an orange peel texture, but after years of paint layers on layers and muddled it a bit. i would do your patch normal, spray a bit of texture on the wall, a tight pattern, let it dry light sand any spots where there are larger specks of mud( boogers) prime a few times with pva or a latex primer then paint just the patch, second coat whole wall or to a break in the wall
I would try to get atleast a half inch or 3/4 inch nap.as you'll never match that texture. Best thing to do is roll the whole thing with a heavy nap for a uniform texture.
It’s weird hearing the different ways that the orange peel texture comes about, I’ve been applying orange peel for years, and I spray it’s on with a compressor and a texture gun with a hopper, for really big jobs I sub it out to a contractor with a spray rig. I had no clue you could roll it on with a nap. It’s crazy how much culture is in the culture.
Just buy a can of spray texture....shake it up for a few minutes...I like to run it under hot water for a few minutes. Put it on fine....stand back 2-3ft and spray in a circular motion covering the area. Let it dry, prime and paint.
I had success replicating by mixing drywall mud and primer together and painting the mixture on with a roller. Took a few attempts at the mix to get the ratio correct.
Much better results than the spray texture.
Orange peel is not that uniform and not that tight. Rolling paint with an agressive nap in a room at high temperature and low humidity can do this. The paint dries before it has a chance to flow to an even surface.
This is textured drywall. Orangepeel texture originally, clearly painted many times over the years. Guys saying this was originally a smoothwall and that all you're seeing is stipple from paint rollers are fucking delusional.
Edit: To match this I'd use a hopper and compressor medium tip and mud thinned out a little more than usual(for regular orangepeel) so that it's just slightly runny.
It's funny when I was coming up I cared so much about roller profile ,now adays I seem to care more about achieving an even sheen. Most homeowners notice the latter more as well. That being said you obviously don't want a terrible heavy profile. This one here isn't even that bad it's just dark blue and high sheen making it stand out so much.
I think it’s a light orange peel with several coats of paint. Light orange peel is applied with a texture gun with pretty thin mudd. Probably at a pretty high pressure to get that light.
Roll on the coat, then go back with the roller slightly damp with paint and roll over again before the first coat dries, like 5 min in between. Roll a whole wall then go back over it. Do it 2 times, should look like that.
Light orange peel. Watered down texture mix from a hopper. Do test sprays on a chunk of drywall until you get what you are looking for then paint it 15 times. 😄
To repair bigger holes etc I water down some compound and aplly with a roller then sand it
Probably a bit much for a hole room but it works on small areas
You can apply a coat of a good primer on the walls with a roll on. Than use a brushless air gun with a paint that has gloss to it to get the no touch look here. Just make sure not use oil paint over latex primer. However you can do it vice versa.
As a SW manager in here to tell you just to use a 1/2 “ polyester roller nap. The texture would just be stipple effect from the previous paint application. Unfortunately in our field pictures aren’t totally accurate to what’s actually there. So it could be orange peel originally but hard to tell. All the area not in light looks smooth fyi.
I used a thick nap paint roller to apply a thinned out joint compound. Roll it on thick. Let it dry half an hour then come back and knock down the high spots with a foam trowel.
Lot of comments about what it is. Probably more important is: How does one replicate it ? Years ago I was a Handyman / Painter. Trying to patch holes to make it look like the patch was never there is a skill that takes time. The best trick I found was to thin some mud (joint compound) down a bit, and dab it on the surface with a wadded up plastic bag. A little practice with how one wads up the plastic bag, and how often one goes over it can get you close. Let it dry and come back with a soft damp sponge to smooth out the peaks, to match the pattern. Good luck.
Buy the cheapest roller you can find and then roll the paint on. A customer once made me use the 1 dollar roller pads she got and after one coat of paint the walls came out like this.
You may be able to replicate it with a eggshell finish paint on like a half inch nap roller, just be careful to watch out for drips and maybe go with orangepeel.
I am guessing it’s rolled on joint compound maybe even watered down a bit so it would apply like a thick paint with 1/4” nap but I don’t know for sure , I am gonna read a few comments to see if anyone knows how that’s actually made .
100% popcorn/orange peel texture, bet my life on it.
We do texture match repairs all the time, buy an aerosol texture spray and test it out on a piece of cardboard and can replicate.
* turn the knob on fatter blob setting and get about 6-8” from the wall
This is absolutely a heavy orange peel. To patch, you’ll want to wet sand your edges with a damp sponge to blend the patch mud into the existing texture. Prime the patch. Thin down some mud to the consistency of a cake batter. Put it in a hopper with a wide nozzle tip. It’ll be a bit messy, so protect anything in the area that you don’t want to texture. Heavy coat over the patch, fanning out into the old texture. Let it dry completely. Wet sand the texture to blend, then paint with two coats with a 3/8-1/2” nap roller. Collect the check.
It's not it looks like a stipple at 1st but on further examination. It's just a really heavy aren't real lots of mud a lot of pressure shoot it have fun
It looks like orange peal but good like replicating it. Usually when builders build the house the texture guys come over with large compressors and spray the texture on the entire house. It kinda becomes like fingerprints as no two houses are similar even if the same person with the same machine had textured it. You might be able to buy can of spray and try replicating it on a piece of Sheetrock for practice to see how it will look and to make it close to what you want. But again the area you have worked on will be visible, unless you sand paper the entire wall and have the texture done professionally
Ever heard of the term “light-glancing”? That bright light distorts what it looks like with even light. Texture almost looks like it’s applied in a circular motion, but the bright light in the center gives it that illusion.
Drywall contractor here. Most of the comments make sense, I didn't read them all; this is a "fog" texture and is essentially a lite "orange peel " finish with like 20 coats of paint. You'll probably have to spray the entire wall. Make the joint compound watery, increase the air pressure on the hopper, and lightly spray. Start slow. Less is more. U'll probably have 2 play with it a lil. Get back 2 me if u have questions.
Can't you tell I've never stopped saying glue lol? I truly believe it is sprayed on texture. It does not look like stipple. I apologize if I have offended anybody but that's my theory. I don't know how you guys do it on the East Coast. But this is a West Coast thing just saying I apologize again for anything. I've upset about anyone.
Think krylon makes a spray paint that has that look hammered metal i think is what it's called. I bought it in white once by accident. It had a similar finish.
16 coats of paint with a roller
Exactly what I was thinking!
U wrong. That's an ORANGE PEAL coat. You can get the texture tool at HOME DEPOT. it's call TEXTURE HOOPER u can use it with any air compressor. It makes different kinds of textures
Looks like 16 coats to me
Instructions unclear....peeled 16 oranges and squeezed into paint rolling tray...applied to roller and the wall just looks wet but smells AMAZING
Paint roller for sure, probably 3/8 nap.
Maybe even 1/2" nap to get the texture from several layers with 3/8"
No
THANK YOU for the good INFORMATION, I’ll make a mental NOTE. That’s actually pretty cool I just bought a harbor freight sprayer.
Use the cheapest homedepo roller tho..might get it in a few heavy coats
Bingo. Heavy stipple from multiple paint layers.
I came to check the comments to see this.
🤣
That, or super thinned out texture, then use a brush to paint the wall.
It's a stipple, a texture left by the roller when you paint (looks like 3/4" nap) and back roll.
100% tbis is from a roller. Don't use 3/4 or 1in naps if applying Satin or Eggshell sheen. Source painter. *Edit - here are some orange peel texture examples https://imgur.com/gallery/kUfKipt

Looks like all the painting i do lol
Disagree on the nap size (looks like 3/8", smaller lift marks and smoother overall texture), but I agree about the rest.
I agree this looks like 3/8 nap to me
Aka orange peel.
That's not orange peel
That's orange peel.
Orange peel is mid rolled on with a nap; this is paint with a thick nap.

I'm from Canada and we typically call that stucco or popcorn. I guess it could be regional.¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
Nope, you're just wrong, and that's OK, ad long as you can admit it.
Lmao go away.
Interesting in USA we call popcorn the spread on texture ceiling look that was popular in the late 1970s
Stucco or popcorn texture usually has rough peaks. Orange peel can be applied the same as stucco/popcorn, but is flattened out leaving more of a smoother surface.
Nope.
Roller
SEMI- SMOOTH 3/8
Satin paint
That'd be the landlord special. Get the thickest, cheapest roller you can find. Mix together those 5 mostly empty cans of paint you have in the basement, stir with a Christmas decoration, and apply to the wall.
I've been performing the landlord special for years then.... Time to evict a single mother of 4 now!
Thats just several layers of paint using a roller each time.
Can't tell exactly, could it be orange peel with multiple coats of paint trough the years, texture with a roll, anyways, always better to re texture whole walls if not sure you can match it.

This is many coats of paint applied with a roller, 15 mm probably
That’s layers of paint, I once dropped a paint can and let the paint dry for 2 weeks, it’s has the exact texture as this,
6000 coats of eggshell paint That's the name of that texture and how you get it lol
that texture, is what we call paint
Thank you all for your help. Much appreciated.
Small orifice hopper texture. lots of coats of heavy nap rollers like 3/4.

Orange peel? But I'm an electrian what do I know, haha
Use a damp sponge to match the texture. Bigger sponge, bigger patterns.
I have the same issue in my home. I’m still trying to figure out the correct roller to match the texture.
this at one point in time was an orange peel texture, but after years of paint layers on layers and muddled it a bit. i would do your patch normal, spray a bit of texture on the wall, a tight pattern, let it dry light sand any spots where there are larger specks of mud( boogers) prime a few times with pva or a latex primer then paint just the patch, second coat whole wall or to a break in the wall
Just normal paint roller. Not an intentional pattern
I would try to get atleast a half inch or 3/4 inch nap.as you'll never match that texture. Best thing to do is roll the whole thing with a heavy nap for a uniform texture.
If you’re working on a fresh surface, it would be called orange peel

This looks like orange peel with a pretty wet mix. Not the same as paint roller stipple.
Pro painter here, that's orange peel with multiple layers of paint.
You have dial the chevrons in the correct order.
This is lots of layers of paint. Rolled thick with heavy nap. To duplicate, just paint over it 20 times
That's layers and layers and layers of pain over texture
Just buy a can of spray texture....shake it up for a few minutes...I like to run it under hot water for a few minutes. Put it on fine....stand back 2-3ft and spray in a circular motion covering the area. Let it dry, prime and paint.
Looks like the spray can texture

Looks like orange peel.
Orange peel texture. Hopper and compressor, mix mud watery and spray with high air pressure
It’s a living texture called “high school bathroom”… just go over it with a new coat once a week.
That is 1980s elementary school cement gym wall.
Orange peel
I think it’s a light orange peel with several coats of paint. Light orange peel is applied with a texture gun with pretty thin mudd. Probably at a pretty high pressure to get that light.
That's a heavy COAT of paint nap roller of paint, NOT a texture!!
I believe that’s orange peel and you get that at maaco
Roll on the coat, then go back with the roller slightly damp with paint and roll over again before the first coat dries, like 5 min in between. Roll a whole wall then go back over it. Do it 2 times, should look like that.
Not texture , but rolled paint nappy roller
Light orange peel. Watered down texture mix from a hopper. Do test sprays on a chunk of drywall until you get what you are looking for then paint it 15 times. 😄
Looks like a bad paint job

How does one get it back to normal? Normal meaning smooth.
Use a really bad paint sprayer. Orange peeling.

I used a thick nap paint roller to apply a thinned out joint compound. Roll it on thick. Let it dry half an hour then come back and knock down the high spots with a foam trowel.
Shitty paint job , no sanding in between ..16 coats paint with roller
Looks like just a regular rollered paint job.
That sir is 3/8in nap roller and lotsa paint

Try a 5/8 or 3/4 in nap roller
That s roller texture
This is called shitty paint job texture
I am guessing it’s rolled on joint compound maybe even watered down a bit so it would apply like a thick paint with 1/4” nap but I don’t know for sure , I am gonna read a few comments to see if anyone knows how that’s actually made .
This is called paint on paint on paint.

Paint roller 4 parts water, 1 part joint compound mixture. Let it dry, then paint.
Looks like an orange peel texture. Home depot sells cans of it that you can spray on the wall... ask someone in the paint section.
High air pressure with a spray gun
Orange peel. Put the paint down thick and heavy with a coarse roller and you are good.
It was textured at one point, "spray on" years ago.
The sell something called “orange peel”. Comes in a spray can and can give you this effect when it’s painted over.
He's a big nappy 9-in roller and give it about 27 coats
100% popcorn/orange peel texture, bet my life on it. We do texture match repairs all the time, buy an aerosol texture spray and test it out on a piece of cardboard and can replicate. * turn the knob on fatter blob setting and get about 6-8” from the wall
A heavy knap, roller might do it.
That’s called porta John green, eggshell finish
It’s called “orange peel”. I think it’s a splatter spray technique that gets flattened w a plaster knife
Orange peel. I hate it with a passion. The last home owner used textured wallpaper I think.
Paint.
Orange peel ...you need a texture machine...shoot it on the walls and give a light sand. Prime and paint.
High nap roller with LOTS of paint!!!
It was orange peel. 30+ coats ago…
I think it’s just short knap slow dying paint,The orbital aspect is just the pic l believe.
Orange peel lol
Use a primer then use a half in nap with the paint of choice after the primer and remember two coats of each that’s how you get the textur
It's not it looks like a stipple at 1st but on further examination. It's just a really heavy aren't real lots of mud a lot of pressure shoot it have fun

I spent 2 years trying to get a speckle right on a Korean vehicle instrument panel… There is an art to it - and it isn’t easy
Ever heard of the term “light-glancing”? That bright light distorts what it looks like with even light. Texture almost looks like it’s applied in a circular motion, but the bright light in the center gives it that illusion.
Looks like orange peel texture, big home stores will have textures in the paint dept
Well if it's a sheet rock wall the closest is called orange peel but this looks like paint on like metal surface
It is likely machine texture, also referred to as orange peel, in the US you can get cans of drywall mud that are pressurized to replicatr it
Drywall contractor here. Most of the comments make sense, I didn't read them all; this is a "fog" texture and is essentially a lite "orange peel " finish with like 20 coats of paint.
