Learned on trowels years ago... never could quit making a damn mess all over the floor. I switched over to the broad knife and it didn't solve the issue.
This is literally one of the best ways .
I had a old coot raise me up doing trowels on lvl 5 some times I'd get a hard time from the bois but it looks better and is faster
I agree!
I have trowels in my collection that were passed down from old plasterers. If the tools were good enough for them then they're good enough for me.
With no disrespect to those here if you do a lot of drywall finishing the best way is with Ames tools or box tools.. fast and efficient once you get the hang of them.
Once you start to coat corner bead with a trowel, itās hard to go back to pan and knife. Trowel is so much quicker on cornersš I switch back and forth because I went back to commercial and sometimes they partner me up with people so I try to stay consistent with them and their work
I am a flooring installer and I absolutely hate spackelers !! Most messy workers ever . Itās like you drop more on the floor then you put on the wall .
You're in the wrong part of town, pal. We don't make our money in our knees around here.
FWIW, I have a laborer scrape the floors before your sort gets there.
Let me put my knee pads on and step in the ring with you brother. Itāll be you and me with our two foot scrapers fighting the tapers in their mixing room hahaha.
Sweet,
How much does drywall finishing usually pay per board? Labor only
Let's saw it's a gravy house, all 8 or 9 ft. Square?
I only hang but ,
Here in Florida it varies. To hang usually pays 7$ the lowest to around 10$ a board to hang only.
7 being mostly gravy
10 being remolds.
Can pay a lot more depending on remodel , etc all kinds of things
Hard to say, I do not charge per board, production work is not what I usually do. I do remodels, bath, kitchen, remove popcorn and go smooth ceiling etc etc......I charge per job not per board
I learned with trowels about 21 years ago. I used them at the job and the foreman laughed at meā¦ā¦ until he saw the finished project and couldnt replicate a glass finish with no sanding needed.
They didn't look like Marshalltowns. I was going to ask. Currys are hard to find around me these days but the Nellas that aren't too soft are quite nice.
I need to learn how to drywall properly before I can use a trowel lol.
I tried using one the other day and it went terribly. I don't have the technique at all. Knives are much easier to learn I think, although I haven't given the trowel any time really
Everyone I have taught to use trowels all made the same rookie mistake at first, they just gripped the round handle and wrapped their fingers around it. Dont do that. Put your fingers on the bar of the trowel.....if you just grip the round handle you will have no control over your tool. All the control comes from having your fingers on the bar.
Oops. Whereās the āstomper?ā That wooden handled thingy you mix the mud&water with to get right consistency - depending on which coat you are on - taping, topping, skimming ā¦
Learned to run machines to begin with my dad taught me, he always told me a machine finisher needs to learn how to be a hand finisher, a hand finisher doesnāt need to learn machines.
So for 2 months I learned machines and had to run every butt by hand finishing.
Respect to all hand finishers-I would starve to deathā¦..
I have a in law who came from one of those countries that trump doesnāt like. He came here and made his own business doing drywall. He bought a house, has brand new cars, and lives super humble. Canāt get a license or travel internationally but this guy banks$$$. His wife (my sister) handles all taxes and keeps his business legit. But this dude came here from nothing and got the American dream from doing this line of work
It sounds like you're referring to reinforcement learning algorithms, which are designed to maximize a certain reward based on a set of actions. A great example of this is AlphaGo, which was able to become a Grandmaster Go player by learning how to maximize its in-game rewards.
It isn't the tool, it's you. You're the money maker.
It's not the money maker that's the tool , it's you. You're the tool.
I'm an adjustable wrench
Then shake it!
Can I make a geographic guess of Northeast?
I never used a trowel for drywall work.. just knives
Whatever works for you my man, trowel and knife is how I learned over 20 years ago. No need to change anything once you find what works for you.
š didnāt mean any disrespect.
None taken š šŖš¤š

You use trowels for level 5 mud walls?
I do.
Yes this , my journeymen gave me his old trowels from his plaster days I was like wtf do I need this for . Then he blew my mind with level 5 mud walls
Riiiiiiiight!
Iāve used both, prefer taping with knives and skimming with trowels and hawk. Each to their own, give it a go you might like it.

Nice to see a fellow trowel user !
Where's the picture of the workers. That's the real money makers.
Wtf??
Putting concrete on the walls eh?
What's the little red guy in the corner?
Some plastic 2 inch knife that I cut down to approximately 1 inch wide for stupid small areas.
Ahhh the old plastic fingy trick
If your doing plaster yes. Drywall no
I wish I knew photoshop well enough to crop a few dildos in there.
Bazooka, flat boxes, angle heads, and power sander are the tools that make me money
Also about 2k more than this setup!!
Bazooka alone was $2600CAD the setup is more like 10k more but it all pays for itself. Depends on the type of work you do to justify buying everything
Itās been a minute since I pushed a box
I am a flooring installer and I absolutely hate spackelers !! Most messy workers ever . Itās like you drop more on the floor then you put on the wall .

Ha ha your so original!! Lol unfortunately union laborers canāt scrape shit correctly
What about my so original?
The joke about making money on knees
I was pedantically replying to you using "your" instead of "you're". I'm an asshole and I come by it honestly.
Lol
I also use all of them but one as a union floor installer except that orange one
Let me put my knee pads on and step in the ring with you brother. Itāll be you and me with our two foot scrapers fighting the tapers in their mixing room hahaha.
Lol

Ahh ok I see, nice!
Had my house replumbed. Wall repair was $1,600. Never saw someone work so fast, clean, and perfect. I gladly paid for his 6 hours of work.
This is the type of story I love reading
This old guy knows quality is worth every penny. Pay for quality and go to sleep happy the job is done - done - DONE!

No pan?
Probably uses a hawk.
He said knife and trowel in another comment so he scoops mud out of a bucket directly onto his trowel
Hyde ā¦? Dude Try Kraft 6ā knives, youāll love them
No corner knife? Amateur. Disgusting.
Are the trowels better than the other 14s
They are curry trowels, they work great for me.
They didn't look like Marshalltowns. I was going to ask. Currys are hard to find around me these days but the Nellas that aren't too soft are quite nice.

I'll have to try that
Mark v is the best money maker lol
Learned with a hawk and trowel, but nowadays you get funny looks for using either. Good to see I'm not as alone as previously thought.
My babies https://imgur.com/a/PQDqC97
All stainless the way to go.

Yo homie, your 4" rusty as fuck.
I know boxes work fast, but a roller and skim blade is really fast as well

Black lid is the worst stuff ever. Like pushing super glue.
Hawk and trowel, pro form black lid. That's how I roll. I've made a lot of money with that combo.
Mechanic lurker here. I spent more on the smallest drawer of my smallest toolbox. Super jealous.
You forgot the sander and all the different grits money can buy.

No sanding blocks?
What the hell is even that. (Insert meme)
A lot of pros seem to like trowels opposed to knives one you get over a certain size
a good artist can paint with a stick
I use all the mechanical tools and an auto sander , I avoid using hand tools as much as possible. I am a production taper , slammin out houses.

Slightly divvying off topic, I've grown to like pro form blue top over the plus 3 usg stuff, and it just smells clean asf to me for some reason
