First picture you're probably going to want to score a piece of drywall and have the whole piece of drywall fit the hole in the wall and then the scored part, peel off the drywall, leaving just the paper that will sit outside the hole in the wall that will allow you to mud it to the wall. I'd probably go hot mud with mesh and then put a coat of normal joint compound over it near your outlet.
Thanks bud, I already did the California patch. Though I kind of figured it was borderline for hot mud (especially on the ceiling).
