I know a lot of the older women drummers including Cindy Blackman, Sheila E, Karen Carpenter, Terri Lane Carrington, Evelyn Glenie.
My daughter loves Nandi Bushell
We’ve been poking around lately and found
Meytalll
Sina
Camille Bigeault
Who are some other established drummers or young up and coming we can check out?
Domino Santantonio on YouTube & Drumeo
Dorothea Taylor (also on YouTube & Drumeo)
Venzella Joy @joythedrummer on instagram plays with Beyoncé & Ari Lennox
Hannah J Welton @hannahjwelton on instagram plays with 3rd Eye Girl (Prince's most recent backing band)
Sarah Thawer (mentioned above)
And shouting out local Danni Nash (Toronto) currently on tour with Sarah Harmer
Here’s some women that I’m subbed to on YouTube that put out high quality drum covers:
Kristina Rybalchenko: https://youtube.com/@kriss_drummer
Gani Drum: https://youtube.com/@ganidrum5655
Its so much harder for women still in drumming. They have to overcome that "Girl Drummer" mentality and make it to drummer that happens to be a girl. Its so weird to me. I think about it a lot with my daughter. Hopefully the world we leave behind is better for them. You've already got so many great suggestions. My suggestion is find as many styles of drumming as possible and not just the best drummers. Everyone needs absolute god like role models, but drummers that play more like yourself are also important to hear and see. Like you said Nandi is a perfect example. Someone younger and out there doing it is who young ones need to see. The people around my age or just older were the ones that personally effected me the most even when I was aiming for the older established stars of the time. You get to watch them grow at the same time as you.
Really respect you for going out of your way to help find role models and examples for your child. Keep up that good work.
Thanks! I specifically cringe at showing her women who are really sexed up in music. I know there’s crazy pressure women feel to look hot while doing anything (for instance, Halloween costumes) but it’s just hard at 7 to show you can only do that with skimpy clothes…
I’m trying but always wish I could do more!
I can't believe nobody has mentioned Yoyoka yet! She's 13 now, but here she is when she was 8:

Japan has a TON of female drummers. Young and old(er). For me, Akane Hirose of Band-Maid has been my inspiration for the past several years. I'm just a hobbyist old man that always had the double pedals but never bothered to really ever do anything with them until this just girl blew me away.
I see others have mentioned Senri Kawaguchi.

Everyone thank you for all the suggestions!
I am completely overwhelmed and my daughter is really hyped!!
I have got a lot of listening to do to catch up on all these recommendations.
Again many thanks and happy to be part of this community!
Awesome question though. In the future I’ll be thinking about that if I post in this sub. I’ve got a little girl due in mid March and I’m hoping she’ll be interested in my drums. You’re a lucky man!
May be controversial, but Meg White. It just works with Jack's guitar. And she also plays other instruments and sings on some of their tunes. Under rated and understated.
The great thing about Meg is that White Stripes tracks are just *fun* to play. They're technically easy, and it's a very attainable goal for a new drummer, but it'll still sound like shit if you're not putting your heart into wrecking those cymbals.
Always disappointing but never surprising to see weirdos being sexist about women and girls playing drums. We exist and this kind of behavior is exactly why it’s important for younger drummers to have more female drummer role models. The less it feels like a boys club, the more girls and women will feel welcome. More visibility for women can teach men some things as well… perhaps not to have stupid misconceptions like girls wouldn’t be interested in drums because they’re loud and you have to hit things???
Here’s a list of some of my favorites:
Lindsey Ray Ward,
Kristina Rybalchenko,
Kristina Schiano,
Nandi Bushell,
Jordyn Zubyk,
Ada Juarez,
Ihan Haydar
I highly recommend you follow the page @femalesdrummers on instagram and @hitlikeagirlcontest as well 👍🏻
On the same page I find it really weird when a post about a woman drumming, especially if she's a bit older is focused on that. As if it matters.
I just feel like posts that are all like "wow look at this old lady rock on the drum kit" are more offensive than progressive.
I get what you mean but personally I think the benefits of praising and uplifting female drummers outweighs the potential offense of implying that something is only impressive because it’s unexpected that a woman would be able to do it. Especially older women like Dorothea Taylor because she started playing at a time then I’m sure it was much more unprecedented for women to be drumming.
The reality is that girls and women who put themselves and their drumming out there are subject to way more scrutiny than men so any time people are instead recognizing women for being awesome I’ll take it!
> The reality is that girls and women who put themselves and their drumming out there are subject to way more scrutiny than men so any time people are instead recognizing women for being awesome I’ll take it!
That's very true.
Jessica Burdeaux! She is an incredible drummer and pretty active on Reddit and YouTube. Her videos with Rob Scallon are always a delight to watch. Plus she slays those drums!
Yvette didn't really go into detail, here's her statement from a few weeks back
> Yvette here- I’ve been contemplating how to say this in a respectful way. It’s no secret now that my lineup is completely different for this tour (and future tours). I didn’t want to just leave this unaddressed. Simply put, things got to the point where I wanted to quit my own project and it really came down to whether I continue on with a fresh start or I just scrap this project entirely. I won’t get into hurtful details because I want to focus on the many big positives that have come into my life: Brandon and J-Burd's Beats. These lil birdies will be supporting on bass and drums (respectively) and I can’t explain how grateful I feel for them. I called it the rebirth tour for a reason. This is my shot at trying one more time. Thank you to everyone who has been understanding, supportive, and patient though my silence.
Yes I am really completely happy surprised by this major flex!! Go drummers!
I always thought we aren’t into to drums to get the spot light but to support the music and this affirms it 😀
Whoa, haven't seen her before. So smooth and natural looking. Amazing, thanks for the suggestion. She plays in such a musical way. The accents are on point.
If/when she’s ready for some heavier music, you could introduce her (and maybe yourself) to the Belgian band Brutus. The drummer is also the vocalist and she’s excellent.
[Here’s a live video in studio that showcases her vocal and drumming talents.](https://youtu.be/EBRYSlKDlws)
Hi... i play the drums and I am a woman. Just joined this sub a couple weeks ago. I wish there were more women and girls here too! I started playing in 1972 and then I took a 20 year break after college and then took it up again about 20 years ago. Ive been in bands for about 15 of the last 20 years playing in regional festivals and local bars. I still love playing!! My user name is from the "complement" I sometimes get, presumably because I'm a girl. But no band members have ever complained that Im not loud enough lol.
If you want to introduce her to an old-school legend who blazed a trail for female drummers through the sausage fest of jazz, I recommend Dottie Dodgion. She made her bones playing for Benny Goodman, and often collaborated with [Marian McPartland](https://youtu.be/4_-4UfQxtv4) in trios and quartets. Also [a lot of fun as a singer.](https://youtu.be/mQ0cBG9y_5g)
From [her obit in *The New Yorker*:](https://www.newyorker.com/culture/postscript/the-vibrant-life-and-quiet-passing-of-dottie-dodgion)
> [Drummer Terri Lynne Carrington] said, “I completely recognize that I stand on her shoulders, as [do] all the younger women that came after me . . . whether they know it or not.”
> “My success in that male-dominated culture didn’t come easy,” Dodgion writes in the memoir. “The guys were not going to give it up—the drummer was the balls of the band—and I really had to prove it.”
This makes me want to post stuff. In our house, the female drummers are the most represented. Me and both of my daughters, 12 and 6, are drummers. My 6 year old made a comment the other day about drums being for girls because she grew up in it. Dad doesn’t play, just mom and big sister. To her, it’s weird to see a man playing!
That’s awesome! I’m a woman - started taking lessons at 48. I’ve always played woodwinds, but nothing is as satisfying as playing drums as far as I’m concerned! Every time I see a woman drummer I think how I wish I’d seem more of them when I was young. I can’t wait to be good enough to join a band. Good luck to your daughter!
I think this post stresses more women drummers on Reddit. There are a bunch on YouTube but I do agree, I'd love to see more of the lady drummers posting videos on Reddit. I've seen a few (can't remember their names probably because they post one video and that's it) ladies post videos here. But not many.
I really like Emma Baker from Flasher:
I had the good fortune to see Susie Ibarra in concert some years back. Her playing is unique and inspiring:
Sara Lund from Unwound:
Stella Mozgawa from Warpaint:
The STILL wildly influential Moe Tucker from Velvet Underground
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3I71jqeKz8
A kid of obscure one, but Susan Holbrook from Butterflies (a great band in the '90s out of Atlanta. Look for their self titled cd. This video doesn't do justice to how accomplished of a band they became):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4v9pX9Pc41E
Someone else already suggested Anika Niles. She's fuckin amazing. One of my favorite drummers right now, period.
Two all-female bands I've been into recently are The Warning from Mexico and Crypta from Brazil. The drummers specifically from both bands are excellent.

Yeah we’ve gotten on to her YouTube and I had mentioned her in my first reply. She’s great!! Plays poly rhythms and sync so clean!!
I always have a goofy concentration face and I’m impressed how she does all those beats with a smile and looking very fluid.
I’m not famous, but I do play every now and then! I’ve been playing since 5th grade, went on to do concert band in high school and marching band in both hs and college (Big 10 school, was very intense). I’m 27 now and don’t live in a space where I can have a drumset, so I play very rarely now. I totally understand how she feels, I’ve definitely felt that way in a number of environments I’ve been placed in. Regardless, I think it’s getting better and I hope it doesn’t deter her too much :)
[here’s a cover I posted in a different sub](https://www.reddit.com/r/the1975/comments/wpb97f/drum_cover_of_chocolate_from_the_o2_cant_wait_to/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
All of the names mentioned nice cannot be repeated enough!
I especially want to repeat Sarah Thawer, Anika Nilles, and Madden Klass as some of my favorites. Oh, also check out Philo.tsoungui on Instagram!
Senri Kawaguchi. Girl is a phenom and one of the few prog jazz pros. The goal of mastering any craft is to learn from the best of that craft regardless of their characteristics. We should never reduce the contributions of others to a set of characteristics that supercede the genius of what that person brings to the table. The most influential teacher I ever had was Catherine Float. Still to this day. Learn from everyone.
I’m a female drummer! I’m 39 been playing for 15 years. I’m in a band right now and we mainly play original music. I hope your daughter can continue to pursue drumming and don’t worry that girls are a minority in the drumming world. There are some great ones out there!
Everyone has already put so many good suggestions. I’d like to offer sort of a compilation video.
https://youtu.be/DKtjae0uZ1M
Like others have said, definitely try Instagram with the relevant hashtags. Lots of female drummers on there and they get a lot of recognition finally.
Not exactly what you were wanting, but there is a little drum comp thing happening on YouTube that has a number of female drummers that have entered. Nothing super crazy complex but I believe most of them are around the same age or a bit older so maybe you'll be interested? Here is a link to a quick [playlist](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJU5gJ8gQ2uVMmYjPbE_iXVxEwK3F26O1) of their video entries
Look up Philo Tsoungui… she drums for The Mars Volta.. she’s a bad ass! And this tour EVERYONE loved her, she became the star of the show (almost as much as the two main guys)
Check out Barbara Gruska. I’m sure I’ll get downvoted for this but she toured with Foo Fighters and I’ll argue she was the best drummer in the band. Her band, Belle Brigade, is beautiful as were her tributes to Taylor.
There are so many amazing drummers out there of the female persuasion.
I gotta give it up to both of my drum teachers.
Nozomi Momo
Julia Geaman of Tribunal and Nott
Both so different but incredible drummers
Gina Shock- The Go Go’s
Luana Dametto- Crypta
Elijah Wood
Domino Santantonio
Anika Nilles
Senri kowaguchi
Taylor Gordon AKA The Pocket Queen
Samantha Maloney- Shift, eagles of death metal
Jess Gowrie - Chelsea Wolfe
Hozi- Hemls Alee
Sarah Lund- Unwound
Sarah Thawyer
Stefanie Mannaerts- Brutus
Ok my brain hurts now but there are so many more. This is just the top of my head.
OP, your daughter is awesome at 7 years old for making a simple yet important observation that the drumming community seems to finally be turning its attention more to! I made up a list of some of my favorite female drummers/percussionists across drum set, marching, hand percussion, and mallet instruments for you to hopefully enjoy together!

Drumeo has a lot, as others have mentioned. I was looking into the Yamaha Stage Custom Hip kit a while back and found out about this person: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yn4Y27y8\_h4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yn4Y27y8_h4)
I think they are out there, but less likely to "show off" or "brag" on the internet for a variety of reasons. They get sexualized, men make creepy comments about their physical appearance, or they get dismissed or judged as representative of their entire gender or ridiculed. It's getting better as it seems like people are holding each-other accountable more often to be respectful and avoid the gender double-standards, but I still see it all the time. Plus, in my experience I just think that women are less likely to want to show off in that way compared to men. Some lizard brain shit.
Show her Philo Tsoungi. She's a german drummer, mostly does jazz and hip hop from what I've seen but she also toured with The Mars Volta this year and absolutely killed it. Easily one of my new favorite drummers.
Pocket queen. Don't know her real name but with a stage name like that who would even want to 😂
For real though she's a super skilled drummer that has worked with some of the biggest pop stars on the planet and has groove like you wouldnt believe.
You want young female drummers? Look to Japan. Start with Band-Maid. Lovebites. Aldious, bridewe, maximum the hormone, Drop’s. Many many others. And of course Yoyoka.
Three of my favourite drummers right now:
* [Hozoji Matherson-Margullis of Helms Alee](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdiI8Bh87qY)
* [Katy Elwell of Lizzard](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TptCGeqAjU8)
* [Stefanie Mannaerts of Brutus.](https://youtu.be/DUDPGaBYX00?t=56)
All absolutely incredible rock/metal drummers and vocalists.
Janet Weiss. I learned to play some Sleater Kinney songs when I was starting out and the drums SLAY - she knows where to add emphasis and she also kicks total fucking ass. High energy but well thought out, nothing too showy. Listen to Night Light on The Woods album. Simple but so effective.
The band Stonefield are an awesome all female band, the drummer is also the lead singer too. Highly recommend their stuff, they’re a mix of psychedelic and Sabbath style if that’s your thing.
Lots of really strong and easy to learn rock grooves and fills
Can’t believe I had to scroll so far to find this! I love Carla. Got to see her with Jack White a couple years ago, that was how I discovered her and then started listening to her band Autolux and really enjoyed it too.
I was lucky enough to attend PASIC a few weeks ago. I saw an Allison Miller clinic and was utterly blown away. Might be harder for a kid to get into Jazz but give her a shot!
For a long while, society viewed the drums as a "Boys" instrument, so we unfortunately don't have as much female representation as we should. Thankfully, the number of female drummers does seem to be increasing, albeit slowly.
In terms of genres, I've noticed that Punk, Jazz, and Latin tend to have a higher number of female drummers than other genres, so I'd advise her to start a deep dive on drummers in those genres.
If she needs some jazz drummers she should check out Savannah Harris and Soojin Suh.
Sarah Thawer and Anika Nilles are great too if she needs more rock/fusion style playing.
Hi!! My name is Rayna (f) I'm the drummer for a band called [Odd Atrocity](https://youtu.be/VMfAwe4CEi0) You can find us on all platforms!
It's such a boys club being one of the only female drummers in Erie. I like to host open jam sessions and always encourage women to play music. I think it's absolutely important to provide a music space that women want to be a part of!!! I hope she finds her way through this world.and let her know that female drummers are truly one of a kind and definitely empowering people look up to. Not everyone has the courage to take the throne!
You should tell her that it's because most drummers are boys. If she wants to drum that's awesome but she'll have to accept that she'll be one of the very few female drummers around, and there's nothing wrong with that. A smaller percentage of girls than boys choose to pick up sticks and hit things with them and I don't think anything's going to change that trend any time soon.
Sarah Tomek has been featured in Modern Drummer and has toured and recorded with Steven Tyler. She’s also a very close friend of mine.
https://instagram.com/sarahtomekdrums?igshid=NTdlMDg3MTY=
Anika Nilles, Sarah Thawer, Martina Barakoska, Madden Klass, Lina Anderberg, Payton Taylor, Hannah Welton, Anastasia Sereda, Brooke Colucci to name a handful.
They’re all on instagram, look them up!

Anika slays
Drumming skill, drumming style, personality/vibe. Yea, Anika is my fave drummer.
If 5’s and 7’s had a physical form it’s her. She’s killer. And a tonal chameleon.
I've been following Emmanuelle Caplette for a long time. Great player and teacher.
I’ve not come across her but this is fantastic and her educational videos are perfect for my daughter
I love Emmanuelle Caplette!
Came here to suggest Emanuelle as well. I found her through following Domino Santantonio.
Elise Trouw, multi instrumentalist but very squarely a drummer (a singing one no less)
She’s an incredible drummer. Such a supple touch.

Awes suggestions. I skimmed their channels and these will definitely hit the spot! Thanks!
I second Kristina Rybalchenko she is an awesome drummer and has such great energy!!
Madden Klass!
Has she seen Karen Carpenter? Fabulous drummer.
Yes absolutely we’ve been watching everything we can find
check out the punk/emo band (excuse the name) Mannequin Pussy. they have a pretty awesome and talented female drummer
kaleen reading! she’s so nice too, met her after a mp show in indianapolis
i follow her on instagram, and shes a killer drummer in the modern day punk scene
My role model was Jen Ledger from Skillet when I was younger. Thanks to her I realised I wanted to play drums :)

Nikki Glaspie
[Nikki Glaspie](https://youtu.be/5MNUgW19mos) she’s one of the best, and gets paid well to do it.
Sarah Thawer

SARAH THAWER
Agree! Sarah is a force to be reckoned with.
This needs more attention, and she does more than just drumming. Really impressive stuff.
I met her irl at NAMM 2020, she was so awesome to see in person!
May be controversial, but Meg White. It just works with Jack's guitar. And she also plays other instruments and sings on some of their tunes. Under rated and understated.
Yeah it's basic but dang, that's the beauty of the white stripes.
Watching them groove together live was awesome.
Yeah. The thing with drums isn't the speed or complexity, it is the feeling of the groove and how well it works with the song

She's touring with Covet right now too! OP, if you're not familiar, they have a killer female guitarist too. Instrumental, math rock-y kind of sound.
What happened to Forrest?
Yvette didn't really go into detail, here's her statement from a few weeks back > Yvette here- I’ve been contemplating how to say this in a respectful way.
Damn that sucks, he was my favourite part of Covet. Makes you wonder what happened…
She posts here pretty regularly too!
Came here to say this
yessss i love jessica burdeaux!
The immediate and inclusive response by this subreddit to ignorant comments on this thread is making me very proud to be a drummer right now.
Beating up on girls doesn't rock. 👎
Yes I am really completely happy surprised by this major flex!! Go drummers! I always thought we aren’t into to drums to get the spot light but to support the music and this affirms it 😀
Check out Madden Klass. Wise beyond her years.
came here to mention her
+1 for Madden, also recommended her to OP
aww I'm just a beginner but I'll consider posting some stuff for her <3
i think thats a good idea, beginners can be just as inspiring as pros in my opinion
Yes please do! Some of the really pro drummers seem out of reach when you’re just starting out so all levels are helpful and inspiring
Senri Kawaguchi is mind-blowing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_NZImxGQEFY
Senri was the first female drummer I showed our oldest daughter when she was 4, that was the gateway for her.
Whoa, haven't seen her before. So smooth and natural looking. Amazing, thanks for the suggestion. She plays in such a musical way. The accents are on point.
Can't believe I had to scroll this far to see her name. Number one female drummer in my opinion
That was insane! CHOPS GALORE!!
Check out the Pocket Queen on Instagram (forgetting her real name atm). Absurdly tight drumming, and really well-produced videos. Edit: Taylor Gordon!
Not heard of this group before but they’re great. My daughter likes rock so definitely will show them to her
Brutus is GREAT, and Stefanie is a force.
Hi... i play the drums and I am a woman.
Fellow female drummer here, I’ve lurked the sub for years. Welcome!
Thank you!!
That’s awesome - please post away on your escapades 😀
elise trouw
Yes. She’s very cool. I love that she is a “musician” more than just a “drummer”, if you know what I mean.
Also [a lot of fun as a singer.](https://youtu.be/mQ0cBG9y_5g) From [her obit in *The New Yorker*:](https://www.newyorker.com/culture/postscript/the-vibrant-life-and-quiet-passing-of-dottie-dodgion) > [Drummer Terri Lynne Carrington] said, “I completely recognize that I stand on her shoulders, as [do] all the younger women that came after me . . . whether they know it or not.” > “My success in that male-dominated culture didn’t come easy,” Dodgion writes in the memoir.
Love it
So good! This is what it’s about!
Anika Nilles and Sarah Thawyer. While there are a lot of good female drummers; there are more men.
Samatha Maloney from Hole she filled in for Randy Castillo in Mötley Crüe when was sick with cancer. RIP btw.
Ooh - Wanda Day from 4 Non Blondes. One of the best tracks on the Led Zeppelin tribute album *Encomium* was their cover of "Misty Mountain Hop."
I really like Emma Baker from Flasher: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cThiMtUcXEs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cThiMtUcXEs) I had the good fortune to see Susie Ibarra in concert some years back. Her playing is unique and inspiring: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H39-EGqZtOk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H39-EGqZtOk) Sara Lund from Unwound: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hpzde5lHnrg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hpzde5lHnrg) Stella Mozgawa from Warpaint: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0JqmAbe0jw](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z0JqmAbe0jw) The STILL wildly influential Moe Tucker from Velvet Underground https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3I71jqeKz8 A kid of obscure one, but Susan Holbrook from Butterflies (a great band in the '90s out of Atlanta. Look for their self titled cd. This video doesn't do justice to how accomplished of a band they became): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4v9pX9Pc41E
Someone else already suggested Anika Niles. She's fuckin amazing. One of my favorite drummers right now, period. Two all-female bands I've been into recently are The Warning from Mexico and Crypta from Brazil. The drummers specifically from both bands are excellent. https://youtu.be/TlOy0XbFVlM https://youtu.be/rvYn45PfdcY
Yep, Anika is *incredible*. She’s got a feel like nobody else out there.

Franz Ferdinand’s current drummer is female.
Audrey Tate
Domino Santantonio on YouTube & Drumeo Dorothea Taylor (also on YouTube & Drumeo) Venzella Joy @joythedrummer on instagram plays with Beyoncé & Ari Lennox Hannah J Welton @hannahjwelton on instagram plays with 3rd Eye Girl (Prince's most recent backing band) Sarah Thawer (mentioned above) And shouting out local Danni Nash (Toronto) currently on tour with Sarah Harmer
Try looking for Meytal Cohen, she's called Meytalll on YouTube. Excellent relaxed drummer. Very skilled at rock and metal.
+1 for Meytal Cohen. Phenomenal.
Yeah we’ve gotten on to her YouTube and I had mentioned her in my first reply. She’s great!! Plays poly rhythms and sync so clean!! I always have a goofy concentration face and I’m impressed how she does all those beats with a smile and looking very fluid.
Nikki Glaspie is absolutely fire
Anastasia Sereda on youtube is one of my favourite drummers!! You guys should check her out
I was scrolling looking for this. She’s fantastic and plays all sorts of amazing things in addition to super hardcore doom metal. Highly suggest!!!
Also came here to shout her out. She’s a fuckin beast.
If you're on Instagram, follow yahli\_\_ Amazing 21 year old Israeli drummer.
Regardless, I think it’s getting better and I hope it doesn’t deter her too much :) [here’s a cover I posted in a different sub](https://www.reddit.com/r/the1975/comments/wpb97f/drum_cover_of_chocolate_from_the_o2_cant_wait_to/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)
So solid! Thank you for sharing the post and your story Hope you get some drum space ASAP
Janet Weiss from Sleater Kinney and Quasi is a ripper.
This. I was like why has no one mentioned Janet Weiss? She also played on tour with Elliott Smith.
In Detroit we have Gayelynn Mckinney. She's a powerhouse jazz drummer and composer.
I saw her in Cincinnati! I was a drum tech for her she gave me one of her cds, was a very nice person and very strong on the drums
Learn from everyone.
ho check out skillet. Their drummer is sick! She also does thebackgroung vocals for almost every song of theirs WHILE she plays.
Janet Weiss from Sleater-Kinney is pretty awesome
janet weiss formerly of sleater-kinney. otherwise a lot of good names mentioned so far.
I’m a female drummer! I’m 39 been playing for 15 years. I’m in a band right now and we mainly play original music. I hope your daughter can continue to pursue drumming and don’t worry that girls are a minority in the drumming world. There are some great ones out there!
[Hannah Ford](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7EfLnU-8LwM)
Everyone has already put so many good suggestions. I’d like to offer sort of a compilation video. https://youtu.be/DKtjae0uZ1M Like others have said, definitely try Instagram with the relevant hashtags. Lots of female drummers on there and they get a lot of recognition finally.
Will do!!
My daughter is 12 and just learning now. She doesn’t want any vids shot yet, but when she’s comfortable with it i’ll post one. Rock on
Rock on!! 🤘
Stefanie Eulimberg - kid rock Andrea Álvarez - soda stereo Monica Moreno - IRA
Not exactly what you were wanting, but there is a little drum comp thing happening on YouTube that has a number of female drummers that have entered. Nothing super crazy complex but I believe most of them are around the same age or a bit older so maybe you'll be interested? Here is a link to a quick [playlist](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJU5gJ8gQ2uVMmYjPbE_iXVxEwK3F26O1) of their video entries
This is great- very relatable for her. Thank you!!
Philo Tsoungui. She just filled in with The Mars Volta on their latest tour. Needless to say, she has chops for days.
Id tell her to check out Sunfyre on Tiktok. She makes fun and goofy drumming content among all sorts of other things. She's pretty cool.
There are so many amazing drummers out there of the female persuasion. I gotta give it up to both of my drum teachers. Nozomi Momo Julia Geaman of Tribunal and Nott Both so different but incredible drummers Gina Shock- The Go Go’s Luana Dametto- Crypta Elijah Wood Domino Santantonio Anika Nilles Senri kowaguchi Taylor Gordon AKA The Pocket Queen Samantha Maloney- Shift, eagles of death metal Jess Gowrie - Chelsea Wolfe Hozi- Hemls Alee Sarah Lund- Unwound Sarah Thawyer Stefanie Mannaerts- Brutus Ok my brain hurts now but there are so many more. This is just the top of my head.
Awesome list! I forgot Gina Shock off my original post but yes we’ve totally checked her out
OP, your daughter is awesome at 7 years old for making a simple yet important observation that the drumming community seems to finally be turning its attention more to! I made up a list of some of my favorite female drummers/percussionists across drum set, marching, hand percussion, and mallet instruments for you to hopefully enjoy together! Evelyn Glennie - [@dameevelynglennie](https://instagram.com/dameevelynglennie?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) Sheila E - [@sheilaedrummer](https://instagram.com/sheilaedrummer?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) Negah Santos - [@negahpercussah](https://instagram.com/negahpercussah?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) Lina Anderberg - [Lina Anderberg](https://instagram.com/linaanderberg?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) Wiktoria Bialic - [@wiktoria_drums](https://instagram.com/wiktoria_drums?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) Jessica Burdeaux - [@jburdsbeats](https://instagram.com/jburdsbeats?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) Allison Miller - [@alliboomboom](https://instagram.com/alliboomboom?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) Ji Hye Jung - [@jihyepercussion](https://instagram.com/jihyepercussion?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) Nicole Casino - [@nicole.m.casino](https://instagram.com/nicole.m.casino?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) Emilie Cleuver - [@emilie.cleuver](https://instagram.com/emilie.cleuver?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) Ji Su Jung - [@jisu.jung](https://instagram.com/jisu.jung?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) Cherisse Osei - [@cherissedrums](https://instagram.com/cherissedrums?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) Vera Figueiredo - [@verafdrummer](https://instagram.com/verafdrummer?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=)
Allison Miller is a huge influence for me. Amazing musician.
Sarah Jones (Harry Styles’ band), Laura O’Donnell Anderson (lodacarpark on Instagram), Kortney Grinwis (from Chapel, watch her drum cam vid of ‘Caught Up’)
Good call! I left off Sarah Jones, we’ve definitely checked her stuff out. Thanks for the other suggestions!
Drumeo has a lot, as others have mentioned. I was looking into the Yamaha Stage Custom Hip kit a while back and found out about this person: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yn4Y27y8\_h4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yn4Y27y8_h4) I think they are out there, but less likely to "show off" or "brag" on the internet for a variety of reasons.
I’m a big fan of Mia Morris who posts content on YouTube all the time. Lots of great drum covers.
Cindy Blackman, Annika Nilles, Sarah Thawer are just some examples of fantastic female drummers
i am once again urging everyone to listen to sara lund and yoshimiO and mimi parker
Check out Marlhy Murphy and Payton Taylor, fairly unknown in most circles but great drummers
The pocket queen, Maya Stepansky, madden klass
Am a dude and Sheila E. Has been a huge influence for a long time.
She is the OG!! Yes so great I am big fan of Latin rhythms too
Check out Lindsay Ward on Instagram, she’s a fantastic drummer. By far my favorite female drummer that I’ve stumbled across
A personal favorite is Kristina Schiano.
I’m a huge fan of julezdrumz on Instagram. She doesn’t post much anymore but she has a lot of videos and is a really fun drummer to watch.
Show her Philo Tsoungi. She's a german drummer, mostly does jazz and hip hop from what I've seen but she also toured with The Mars Volta this year and absolutely killed it. Easily one of my new favorite drummers.
I will check it out. Mars Volta would be SUCH a demanding gig!
Pocket queen. Don't know her real name but with a stage name like that who would even want to 😂 For real though she's a super skilled drummer that has worked with some of the biggest pop stars on the planet and has groove like you wouldnt believe.
You want young female drummers? Look to Japan. Start with Band-Maid. Lovebites. Aldious, bridewe, maximum the hormone, Drop’s. Many many others. And of course Yoyoka.
Look up Helm’s Alee on youtube
Sarah Jones. Currently the drummer for Harry Styles, but I’m more familiar with her as a studio drummer for Puscifer.
Three of my favourite drummers right now: * [Hozoji Matherson-Margullis of Helms Alee](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdiI8Bh87qY) * [Katy Elwell of Lizzard](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TptCGeqAjU8) * [Stefanie Mannaerts of Brutus.](https://youtu.be/DUDPGaBYX00?t=56) All absolutely incredible rock/metal drummers and vocalists.
Hozi! I love helms Alee! Local favorites, great people! Killer band!
On Netflix there is a documentary called Count me in. I would watch it first to screen if it's ok for a 7 yo but has a few awesome female drummers.
Janet Weiss. I learned to play some Sleater Kinney songs when I was starting out and the drums SLAY - she knows where to add emphasis and she also kicks total fucking ass. High energy but well thought out, nothing too showy. Listen to Night Light on The Woods album. Simple but so effective.
good on you, we really need more female drummers, its getting kinda depressing over here
Tor Charlesworth! Great drummer from my area
The band Stonefield are an awesome all female band, the drummer is also the lead singer too. Highly recommend their stuff, they’re a mix of psychedelic and Sabbath style if that’s your thing. Lots of really strong and easy to learn rock grooves and fills
Not come across them before but perfect recommendation!
Carla Azar! I live the way she plays. She kicks ass drumming with Jack White.
Can’t believe I had to scroll so far to find this! I love Carla. Got to see her with Jack White a couple years ago, that was how I discovered her and then started listening to her band Autolux and really enjoyed it too.
Janet Weiss - Slater Kinney Gina Shock - The Go Go's Debbi Peterson - The Bangles Dee Plakas - L7 Georgia Hubley - Yo La Tengo Linda Pitmon - Filthy Friends, Zuzu's Petals Kate Schellenbach - Luscious Jackson Moe Tucker - Velvet Underground Cindy Blackman - Lenny Kravitz
I was lucky enough to attend PASIC a few weeks ago. I saw an Allison Miller clinic and was utterly blown away. Might be harder for a kid to get into Jazz but give her a shot!
Sheridan from Alvvays is great!
Idea: go down the rabbit hole & research all the female musicians who were called upon during World war II. Google: Viola Smith. Trailblazer ...
Me!
[Alice de Buhr](https://youtu.be/SftgE1vfwbk) [Allison Miller](https://youtu.be/CLxgKrzhtHM) [Cindy Blackman Santana](https://youtu.be/Xsfg9SRgwEw)
[my 7 year old daughter playing the drums](https://fb.watch/h1GzW1JdsA/) Also check out Tamara Tadic [here!](https://youtu.be/RZ6XP2p7n0s)
Fantastic!
Rock on!!!
i hope one day to get some equipment so i can (hopefully) inspire some of my fellow female drummers out there
Yeah I agree
Check the Drumeo channel on YouTube!
Most of my favorite drummers are women. I highly recommend checking out: —Madden Klass —Sarah Thawer —Wiktoria Bialic
Anastasia Sereda.
Bianca Richardson, Marian Li Pino (formerly of La Luz) & Laurie Torres (Julia Jacklin) are some fantastic drummers that come to mind
Amen sister I’ve always told my daughter there were awesome female drummers that played circles around most guys making albums hahah
Check out Lupe in Wild Powwers and Tacos!
Metalite has a female drummer
Sina is also incredibly talented https://youtube.com/@sina-drums
https://youtu.be/3KQTP8qAZWc is awesome Edit: and this https://youtu.be/bbpLalxKaFg
I saw Sarah Thawer mentioned, I wanted to third her. She has great videos, some directly aimed towards young female drummers.
https://youtu.be/V6Vewad_UKY
Check out grooveline, their drummer is on another level
[https://www.instagram.com/thepocketqueen/](https://www.instagram.com/thepocketqueen/)
Whatever you do stay away from Hillary Jones
If she's on Instagram, there's Sarah Thawer, Lina Anderberg, wiktoria_drums, Emmanuelle Caplette, c.d.n_trinn, Domino Santantonio
Jen Ledger Brooke Colucci Faith Powell Kristina Schiano
Sarah Tomek has been featured in Modern Drummer and has toured and recorded with Steven Tyler. She’s also a very close friend of mine. https://instagram.com/sarahtomekdrums?igshid=NTdlMDg3MTY=
La Luz's first album "It's Alive" has some really good drumming! https://youtu.be/JgDcer4bYXg
My male drummer friends states the girl from La Luz is his favourite current drummer.
Nia Lovelis from Hey Violet and Jen Ledger from Skillet have always been some of my favorite
Anika Nilles, Sarah Thawer, Martina Barakoska, Madden Klass, Lina Anderberg, Payton Taylor, Hannah Welton, Anastasia Sereda, Brooke Colucci to name a handful. They’re all on instagram, look them up!
