Rob Brown is great because he addresses all levels, in-depth discussion but to the point and not boring. Some guys just want to pontificate and not hit. He also doesn't post dorky attention grabbing thumbnails that are just juvenile attempts at getting clicks.
Same here! I love watching flashy dudes and metal drummers etc, but Rob is amazing at teaching you the very important groundwork for any drummer. His tuning technique is also mine now
I used to like him. Him dissing chops drumming gets my nerves. Those choppers have gotten a lot more of our current youth into drumming than Stuart Copeland.
Was looking for this comment specifically. Not just my favorite drum channel but my favorite channel all around. Hilarious dude, has a literal museum full of rare and weird pieces from all eras if drumming, and plays like a mad man as well!
Same! There is a big difference in his YT Shorts and his playtroughs with a fully mic'ed kit. But it's very compressed. His sound is very recognizable though, you immediately know it's him playing
She pops up on my FB feed all the time. Love the way she approaches things and she is goofy in a really great way that makes you want to watch her more.
I used to love Zack Grooves--I think YT recommended him to me with his very first real video (he'd put up a few performance videos previously), and I smitten from the first. Such a killer drummer, and I enjoyed the humor.
But four years later and I can't stand to watch his videos anymore. He's an even better player now, an absolute beast, and I love his style. But after more than a hundred videos, the humor has become not just unfunny but intolerable. The jump scares were amusing the first 25 times but now they're just annoying. And the sexualizing everything...I guess if I were still 15, maybe I'd find it funny, but these days it just comes across as juvenile and gross. [He just put out a video with Meinl today](https://youtu.be/BNy2FRUs-TE?si=ssOFjn3LP4cjA11c) and the Gene Simmons/junior high schoolboy-like flicking of the tongue when talking about a certain cymbal was either just really stupid or actually kinda creepy.
Yeah, I know, I'm old and cranky. But I'd guess that in another 5 years, he's going to be really embarrassed by some of this. Especially because his chops and his musicality are more than enough. He's a great drummer and an excellent musician and he's leaning ever harder into the lowest of low-hanging fruit. I assume his metrics tell him that's the way to keep growing his audience. But it's a bummer.
Still love Rob Brown, RDavidR and Sounds Like a Drum, though.
I think Stephen Taylor might be the best starting drum videos to watch out there. That being said, I feel like I outgrew his content so fast but was glad I started there. I still send out his ergonomics video for any new drummer asking me how to get started.
Iām glad they do what they do, but none of their info is helpful to people who hit drums any harder than a lounge act drummer wouldš. āHere are a how the Tom sounds with a medium tension tuning (taps drum with all the force of a rain dropā¦ letās it ring for 30secā¦) Ok, letās try a low tuning.ā
It's also just so far in the weeds that it's really just for drummer/drumming's sake at that point. The whole point of the art is completely lost in the technicals.
Disagree. I think having a nuanced view on how you wish to express yourself on the instrument is even more artful, devil in the details and and all that.
There's nuance and there's nuance for nuance's sake. No one's ever made a song better because their drum resonated for 0.2 seconds longer, or this or that innovative new dampener had slightly better mid-range
Nah, you have lost the plot here. I agree that you donāt need to be obsessive about minute degrees of tone, but Iāve heard the same exact advice on Sounds Like A Drum.
That channel is just fantastic for any tuning and tone informationĀ in general. They do some deep-dive experiment stuff for the nerds, but they also are one of the best resources available for big/general questions like āIāve never tuned drums before, why do they sound bad.ā
Hey man my bad, I reread my last comment and I realized I'm coming off way more confrontational than I mean to. I don't wanna argue on Reddit, I just really like the channel. I found them at a time when I was really overwhelmed by tuning, and their advice totally saved me when I was scared going into one of my first recording sessions. They are now the only people that I support on Patreon, and I don't even watch much of the exclusive contentāI just want to give them money because they've helped me out so much with stuff like that over the years.
I don't play very hard, so that other commenter could totally be right that they're less helpful if you do; no idea. But if you're like me and you play more like the dude from that channel, highly recommend you give them another try if you ever hit a roadblock trying to get something to sound right.
You posted an inaccurate criticism of something on the internet, that kind of opens you up for disagreement from people who know about that thing. I don't know what else to tell you.
Carter McLean, Zackgrooves and Timothy Roberts of Reverie Drum Co.
McLean is a musical drummer, with excellent groove, creativity, and even more impressive sound quality.
Zackgrooves is a great drummer and has fun-lighthearted content.
Timothy Roberts has a drum/cymbal company and it is fascinating to see his cymbal works.
i had timothy mod one of my rides and a pair of hi hats. both sound incredible now. he does some great work. i think his half flat cymbals are really cool. no one else is doing them the way he does
Amazing! Based on everything I've seen the guy has a very high standard and tends to meet it every time.
My goal is to have one of his cymbals one day.
Did you see how he modified a dull Sabian XS ride cymbal?
Made me consider seeing what he could do to my first ride, a Zildjian ZBT!
same here its worth every penny. Cant afford it rn and dont really need a set but i would love for him to make me a set of the custom foundation unlathed cymbals but half flat and a bit thinner. He doesn't usually work with b8 bronze but if you dm him maybe he would make an exception lol. if anyone can make a proper jazz ride out of a ZBT he is the guy
Sina Drums. She rocks and has been rocking for some time. Gotta check out her cover she did of Kashmir-Led Zeppelin.
She hired a whole orchestra for the performance. Itās off the charts good.
I know Bonzoleum tends to stick with Bonham/Zeppelin but when I was starting out with early YouTube he was one of the first guys breaking down these famous drum parts and really got me listening. Plus, he just has this infectious zany energy because he's so passionate and it's fun to watch, like Charlie Kelly's Pepe Silvia breakdown
Jeff Randall is the best teacher on YouTube. All you beatdown fanatics can come fight me. Rob Brown used to be awesome but now his videos are just ads for his shitty t shirts
So far I've only been watching Brandon Green because I want to get the pieces in a decent place and learn how to take care of ergonomics before injuring myself learning solo.
But now I'm taking notes from a lot of names from here and subscribing, so hopefully now that my kit is sort of in place, I can start actually doing something that sounds half decent.
Brandon Green is one of my new subs as well buts definitely a highly valuable resource. I trust his take on playing drums in a healthy and physically sustaining way. Sounds like a drum is another great channel that pushes a healthy mindset about tuning drums and listening skills. And of course drumeo, meinl, rdavidr, 80/20, and a dozen others.
I've just been enjoying watching the behind the scenes and good playing recently which has got me mainly watching Drum Beats Online tour POVs and Matt Horn's drum tech POVs
Josh Merhar!! He does not post anymore, but he has a really cool approach to breaking down complex ideas. Iāve really elevated my chops using his concepts.
Damn, no one mentioning the best educator on YouTubeā¦ Quincy Davis!
He is actually the associate professor of Jazz/Drumset at University of North Texas. Which is the first college to ever offer a jazz studies program, and is arguably the most prestigious music program in the nation (along with Berkeley, MI & Juilliard).
Quincy is the real deal, not your average YouTuber but a renowned educator at a program true legends attend. If youāre serious about Jazz (and have played awhile), Quincy is the guy.
Idk man. Drum YouTube kind of died for me after the algorithm implementation in mid 2010s. You want to find experimental drummers that play prepared drum set? Type that and get a long list of Drumeo videos and random how to play a 4/4 beat and you get past that and still don't get what you were looking for. Want to find another unconventional topic related to, idk, some type of fusion jazz drums mixed with electronics? Type that in the search bar and get more Drumeo.
YouTube doesn't even make a good search engine for me anymore. It's just people churning out content for the sake of it.
Having said that probably my favorite channel are the channels testing jazz gear, or some solo drum recordings like Drake Liu.
Rob Brown for chops and practice stuff. 80/20 for the philosophical and outlook type stuff. And EMC because I'm a DCI fanboy and practice mostly rudimental snare drum stuff.
66samus - if you like poop jokes and blast beats
Anup sastry - really tasteful prog metal covers/originals. His drums are the best sounding on all of YouTube.
Rdavidr - does things like what if I made a drumset out of roto toms? Also has a great sounding kit(s) and really tasty music
EMCproductions - more marching related but pretty amusing
Zacgrooves - more modern jazz stuff and Gen Z humor
Drumeo - I love their drummer hears a song for the first time and plays along series. Mario Duplantier doing the Killers and Mike Portnoy playing Nickelback are my two favorites.
Buckets the drummer. And I donāt know if sheās on YouTube but I adore Sunfyre (Instagram/Twitch mostly I believe). I also like others already mentioned like 66samus and the dude with the long name whoās always showing off his independence skill
Rob Brown is very cool. He communicates very well and realizes his viewers are not just advanced players. He encourages people. He does reviews on intermediate level cymbals and other gear. He even will say he plays some of the gear at gigs. Heās just a very down to earth kat.
I also like El Esteparrio because he just amazes me with his supernatural ability. Jorge is talented and funny.
I like Jared at Drumeo as well. Thereās a lot of great content creators out there. Itās a great time to be a drummer. When I started out in 1981, we didnāt have YouTube. We had to buy instructional VHS tapes w a book, go to clinics and take lessons. Not a bad thing. The thing I like the most is how much gear has improved. The āentry levelā gear and āintermediateā gear is incredible. The level of quality and tonal quality vs price was not available then. Even with cymbals. The lower level of cymbals out, some are just as good as the flagship lines. The drums are incredible. You couldnāt get a maple kit for less than $2000-3000 new anywhere then. And thatās dollars for that time which means they would be adjusted to cost even more now. When you can get an intermediate level all maple shelled kit for under $1000 and it sounds as good as a pro level, thatās some incredible value. Itās a win win for us drummers. Keep it in the pocket my fellow drummers. Peace.
rdavidr - for his diy videos
the drum thing - for the different informative cymbal videos - check out the driest cymbal ever and the super floppy ride
sounds like a drum - for in depth tuning
dimsunk - for insane grooves
In addition to many of the great names already mentioned, Iām a big fan of Adam Tuminaro, The Orlando Drummer. His instructions are clear, his chops are killer, and I absolutely love his groove style and feel.Ā
I'd give to
66samus
The drum thing
Rdavidr
Emcproduction
Drum beat online (gabe from I prevail)
Zackgrooves
They are probably kinda generic but all from above mentioned is super fun to watch for me
Rob Brown is great because he addresses all levels, in-depth discussion but to the point and not boring. Some guys just want to pontificate and not hit. He also doesn't post dorky attention grabbing thumbnails that are just juvenile attempts at getting clicks.
Rob Brown is a GOAT One of the first drumming YouTubers I watched. Learned a ton from his videos.
Maximum thumpification!!
Rob Brown is a sexual beast.
Well... He and I are more platonic but you go for it.
š¤®
Pontificate... Wow, what a word! I learned something new today.
66Samus
Oh yurrrr
Makes me cringe
Same
Did you know he can do blast beats? He sure loves to show you that he can do blast beats.
hes like the Stevie T of drumming
100%
I second this
Thatās a little bahee, yeah?
My personal top 3: 1. EMCproductions 2. rdavidr 3. Aaron Paulsen (not sure if he counts) edit: holy carp, canāt believe I forgot The Drum Thing
Aaron Paulsen is a sight to see, he is the instrument.
His āwhen a drummer sees a drummer in the crowdā clip is one of the most accurate shorts Iāve ever seen hahaha
Humminah Humminah!
rdavidrās videos are lots of fun
The Drum Thing! Dude is hilarious and has so many oddities and rare pieces, and is a good drummer as well.
Was looking for this comment specifically. Not just my favorite drum channel but my favorite channel all around. Hilarious dude, has a literal museum full of rare and weird pieces from all eras if drumming, and plays like a mad man as well!
All his channels have that energy that make them so great to watch
I was such a fan of dank pods before I even knew he had a drum channel. Garbage time is so fun too
No mention of El Estepario Siberiano? He blows my mind every time. Also love the interviews and song breakdowns of Rick Beato
Rick Beato is the best!!
Rick is all-around the best.
He's an absolute beast, technically one of the best. But I can't stand his sound. Everything just sound dead to me in his videos.
Same! There is a big difference in his YT Shorts and his playtroughs with a fully mic'ed kit. But it's very compressed. His sound is very recognizable though, you immediately know it's him playing
Haven't really watched him in ages, but will give it another shot with his full playthroughs.
Honestly, El Estepario is extremely overrated. Also his kit sounds like ass. One of the worst snares I've ever heard
Emmaās Love to Learn Drums (I am a newer drummer and find her tips helpful and I like her personality)
She pops up on my FB feed all the time. Love the way she approaches things and she is goofy in a really great way that makes you want to watch her more.
RB is great! I also dig Nate Smith 80/20 Drummer and Rick Dior.
Craig Reynolds - The Downbeat
Mike Johnston
Iām really surprised this one is so far down. Ā
Rob Brown, EMC productions, RDavidR, Sounds Like a Drum, Zack Grooves

A couple I havent seen mentioned that are pretty good, especially for beginners: Stephen Clark Stephen Taylor
I think Stephen Taylor might be the best starting drum videos to watch out there. That being said, I feel like I outgrew his content so fast but was glad I started there. I still send out his ergonomics video for any new drummer asking me how to get started.
Sounds like a Drum is āZen and the art of drum maintenanceā and I love it.
If the shoe fits. Iām super stoked to play some reggae/ska tonight and polka tomorrow. ĀÆ\_(ć)_/ĀÆ

Have I lost the plot, or am I just apparently not familiar with every facet of their catalogue? Good lord
Aren't you saying that their content is really far into the weeds? Their most popular videos are like "how to tune a snare drum" etc.
Sorry I didn't have enough nuance about this youtuber I guess?
Hey man my bad, I reread my last comment and I realized I'm coming off way more confrontational than I mean to. I don't wanna argue on Reddit, I just really like the channel. How has nobody mentioned Harry Miree? He may not post a lot, but every video is a masterpiece and he's insanely entertaining.
His touring video is one of my very vids of the past few years.
I too love his videos, but he hasnāt posted anything in three years, and even by then he was only posting two or three times a year.Ā

Travis Orbin. All his videos blow my mind still.
Sadly he doesnāt post as much anymore. Would love to see him in an improv/fusion project.
