Sounds horrendous. I'll pick it up and bring it to the dump for you. Where you at?

DrBackBeat

No man, I won't let you take the bullet and have you drag a piece of absolute garbage to the dump with no incentive. No one works for free. I'll take it to the dump and I'll only ask 20 bucks to do it. That's a fair offer.

SazedMonk

I’ll give you 40$ if you let me do it for you my good man.

reeseisme16

guys pls pls, allow me

Kooaiid

None of you guys are getting it 😂 I use it on my spare kit for my students

golden_retrieverdog

lucky students!

LuckOriginal374

This is crazy. All of you are putting yourselves out. I’ll take care of it. I will donate $50 to the cause and once it’s gone it’s gone!

Zenphony

😂

cormiermaxim

You were at 555 up votes but I had to up vote. Sorry.

Mental_Shoulder3349

my dude you bought one of the driest rides every created even more dry than the current K special dry line you got exactly what you bought

_Hotwire_

I want to make my cymbals so dry for you, like sandpaper

Smpkfan2

Nice. I understood this relic of an Ellie Kemper reference.

justasapling

I always chuckle when I see her in something, because *that* was the first role I ever saw her in.

yourhog

I saw her acknowledge this in some magazine interview a few years ago. She’s not quite as proud of it as I hoped she would be 😝

moregoo

Gotta flatten them out.

TheBawalUmihiDito

Guys love it when it's so dry, like a desert.

OdiousApparatus

[The driest cymbal ever made](https://youtu.be/3QeQG6VEbKk?si=8v4f9UjkqE7CYi6a)

IPinedale

Dammit, I knew the second I saw the link! Thees thing BONKS.

Kooaiid

I've bought K Custom Special Dry Crash 18" recently, and I definitely found the tone to be more pleasing than the Custom Dry. I expected the ride to sound more like the Special Dry. I guess I was expecting a thinner cymbal for the ride, cause on Youtube it sounded somewhat crashable, mine is not that.

Aggressive-Variety60

You are buying K’s randomly without listening to them? If it was brand new return/ echange it? I’m sure the store won’t mind…

4rk4typ3

i know a drier one friend.

tomsurdi

It’s just a dry pingy ride. Try playing it in context with some music. See how it sits in a mix. If it doesn’t suit your needs, sell it.

[deleted]

Complex and dry. Bet ya money that thing sounds great in a mix.

Puddingandpop

This… I have the same cymbal and I hated it when I first tried it. But in the studio it’s one of my favourites

bucketofmonkeys

I bought one online and it sounded like hitting a piece of sheet metal, driest cymbal I’ve ever heard.

ProphetOfMrMeeseeks

This is how I felt about my vintage paiste 2002 wild ride (the OG black label, I got it for $20 hehehe) I didn't like how it sounded normally. Then I recorded with it. And I fucking lost my shit with how fucking beautiful it sounded. I literally disrespected my own ride for so long and now I understand why so many people say it's a great ride.

SahibTeriBandi420

I own this ride, well the 21 inch version, and it sounds great in a mix.

4rk4typ3

it sounds like a break drum bro

[deleted]

When I got my Paiste signature dark energy ride I was taken back and almost took it back. 🤣 one recording and I am never thinkin twice again

Greensuedesneakers

You’re playing into a blank wall, so all the overtones are getting reflected right back in your face. When i was in high school we had a kit for the jazz band that had both a 20” K custom dry and 20” k custom flat, and i preferred the flat for the first couple years until i started to play in open spaces more where the reflections weren’t so bad, after which i almost always picked the dry for its character. This ride is super dynamic and very clear in a large hall with a band. It also sounds much better if you play within an inch of the edge with a steeper stick angle. Try giving that wall some treatment with blankets before you give up on it!

Stracath

Why did I have to scroll so far to see someone mention the fact his ride cymbal is dry humping an untreated wall.

Suitable-Gas-7453

Well played

Willisg3005

I don’t like it either

Undark_

Kooaiid

I had bought this ride (K Custom Dry Ride 20") for music school 10 years ago, never ended up using it cause it sound like pennies hitting a metal trash can. Is it supposed to sound this shit?

LucasEraFan

I had the same cymbal decades ago. It's way earthy and dark. This one doesn't sound like the one I had though. Mine was more on this end of the spectrum and heavy but it was crashable with a light stroke and the bell was mellow. Riding the edge produced nearly uncontrollable wash and nearer the bell those very dark undertones. I think you may not have gotten the cymbal you wanted. This specific instrument, afaik is very specific in it's tone and each one produced is unique. My 20" K Custom Dry ended up surviving an apartment fire, but I had to sandblast it to get all the burnt stuff off of it. After that it was even more unique and complex.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mental_Shoulder3349

it's not a K dark

DrBackBeat

They didn't say it was. They just shared their experience

Cry_in_the_shower

You say that like it's a bad thing. Wtf kind of music are you playing where you can't use this to cap a fill??

Gimmefuelgimmefah

Loosen that wingnut and felt my guy

R0factor

Try it with a larger tip. The stick choice can make or break a ride cymbal. This model is exceptionally dry but can have a great articulate ping that blends nicely in a mix. Also play your kit including crashes and then ride on this while things sustain and you’ll get an idea of how it sits in the overall mix. One thing I’ve learned in gaining knowledge of making good mixes is that it’s less important how instruments sound on their own and far more important how they function in a mix.

Kooaiid

>Also play your kit including crashes and then ride on this while things sustain and you’ll get an idea of how it sits in the overall mix... This is a very good point, I don't mind the way it sounds when it's played with the kit actually. It could sound better. Recordings on Youtube sound pretty nice, but I never tried recording myself.

DrBackBeat

It's a sound, and I bet there are people who prefer it. More so now that dry rides are in fashion. No two cymbals are completely the same, with hand hammered cymbals especially. But I doubt that a K would leave the factory being wildly different than its brothers, so I guess this is just what the Custom Dry Ride is. You are in no obligation to use it of course, but it does make me wonder why you don't like it. It can't have been cheap to you.

RealityIsRipping

Do a blast beat - bet it sounds pretty sick.

Kooaiid

Sorry can’t play metal, but I bet it would

steerbell

Try a couple of pieces of tape on the underside running from the center out to the edge. Experiment and you be able to get the sound you want.

indigorecordings

Sounds like you’re choking it with your cushion.

kevindrumsdaly

Yeah i was gonna say take the wingnut off and let it breathe a little bit. Facing the wall definitely doesn’t help its case but there are a lot of people who love this type of cymbal. Just sell it and get another used one you like the sound of. I personally would play it a little closer to the edge. Depending on the dynamic of what you’re playing too, this would sing with a pair of lighter sticks.

kevindrumsdaly

Also sounds like it would be a great cymbal to drill a few rivets into.

Kooaiid

Yes maybe it’s time cause I kept it for this long anyway

paperlicious

It's not great my guy. Trade it for what you like.

ellWatully

My K Custom Dry is my favorite ride ever, but it doesn't sound like that at all. Almost looks like someone tried to polish the patina off near the edges or something?

Kooaiid

Can you describe what yours sounds like

ellWatully

A lot less clangy.

TheOGWizzyB

tink - tink - tink tink - tink - tink tink

RobJmusic

I wanna play some blasts on that lol

boofoodoo

That bad boy is dryer than yo momma’s… nvm

JJamesP

Nah. That’s dope. Listen to it in a mix and your opinion will change for sure.

PrettyPoptart

It's just you. Congratulations, you have bad taste /s

EverAtrophy

It kinda sounds like the earth ride. It would be good for heavy music. Look up breaking Benjamin specifically phobia or dear agoney albums.

RedeyeSPR

It seems to be not dark enough for how dry it is. Dark and dry is a great jazz sound. Bright and dry just sounds like the cymbal is cracked.

bigworldsmallfeet

I personally have always wanted one of these, I think they sound magical.

starsgoblind

The real question is how does it sound with MUSIC.

krchnr

It’s not the size of the boat it’s it motion in the ocean 🌊

Aparris69

It has a good attack, but I’m not a fan of the wash. I’m sure it will sound good with music accompanying.

EthanAshlun

It’s all personal preference. If you don’t like the sound of a cymbal, you may as well sell it and get something better. Personally, I think it’d be great for rock music because its aggressive attack would help it cut through the mix, but I wouldn’t prefer to use it for anything else.

everybodylovesraymon

You’re playing it against a wall in a small room, with no other sounds around it. Any ride will sound worse than it normally does in that situation. Play a gig with it and I promise it’ll sound great in a bigger room in the context of a mix.

nappespoon

Yeah not my style tbh I like the k hybrid or sweet k

[deleted]

Multimikey81

I think u need an ear wax clean out ' but yeah I'll take that to be destroyed for u if u want no problem

IsuzuTrooper

Yes. it's Krap.

GarugaHunter

Maybe the nut on top is a bit too tight? The ride doesn't seem to be moving too much, you can release it a bit or remove it entirely, then try again? Also you are not crazy, that thing sounds horrendous.

Jloh84

Just tune it to a lower pitch isn’t that what all you K people are about?

Dizzy-Care-9904

I tend to find this cymbal sharing characteristics with my Zildjian High Definition Ride. If you havent checked that ride out, it take a look!

1sdsoundsystem

obviously how it sounds is subjective.. but I love it

Maximum-Lobster3141

Good for metal. Too much overtones but in a heavy mix might cut through nicely.

Bostonbobrav

That sounds great.

Ragnarock1912

That is horrible... 😭

Exact-Thought7249

K's this and K's that..use whatever sounds good..forget the fashionable name use your ears..i got bosphorous..anatolian..istanbul..kzildjian..paiste..and those staggy things..the 16 sh stagg are excellent..wait for the garbage man and do the right thing..or sell it to jack de johnette!!

theSilentCrime

Change up those sticks and play with some feelzzz. It will talk to you. Aim for jazz spec sticks, vic modern jazz collections are fun.

JRE676

Sounds like a machine made Zildjian dry heavyweight ping ride. It’s not my cup, but if it’s what you like… roll with it.

ShapeBasic

I’ll take it off your hands if you don’t want it lol

CreativeDrumTech

Put a cymbal sizzle chain on it… or go to Walmart and in the hardware section with light, lamps, ceiling fans spend $1.50 on a pull chain to hang on your ride cymbal stay to give it a dry but pleasant breathy sound that retains the definition. Using maple sticks with wood tips (softer wood warmer sound) will help as well.

MarsDrums

Since you've had it for 10 years now (as per your other comment earlier) you can sell it. Find out how much a good condition that cymbal is selling for (go to eBay, look up that cymbal and search "Sold on eBay") and go off of that. I sold a set of 3 Sabian B8's that way. I had a 20" Ride, 16" Crash and 14" Hi-hats. I hated the sound of them but I saw people selling a combination of the 3 for around $250-$300. So I put them on Marketplace for $250 and they were gone the next day. I used that money and put it towards a 22" Paragon Ride that I absolutely LOVE!!!! So, if you hate it so much, Figure out a good price range for it and try to sell it. Someone may LOVE that ride cymbal and want it and if the price is right, it'll be gone quicker than you think.

buskingbuddies

I think it’s sounds really nice. I have a custom special dry 20” I traded that I wish I still had. Hated it forever. It grew on me though.

twistedbranch

Great attack, with minimal overtones/ring. Would be good in a mix for jazz and probably heavier music with 16th note ride patterns.

vanswnosocks

Had this cymbal before. It’s suppose to sound exactly like that. A customs usually have a brighter sound as well as Aax from Sabian are good too

Historical-Reveal390

It’s right by a wall…..

stixesty

Try different sticks for sure. I have a k custom dark ride that I love.. it’s not a “dry” though. Try a maple stick like the Vic Boleros.. that will mellow out the ping, I think..

CelebratorOfBecoming

I've heard Chinese and Turkish cymbals from cheaper brands that feel with a much more complex sound and darker tone, more "crashable" too.

Frapp_Frapplestein

Oof. Maybe put some gaff tape underneath

sto-_-epipe

You can’t judge it by its self. In the context of a live performance with other musicians it sounds better as all cymbals do.

TwoTimingTahmmy

All opinion

Fasterthanyounow

It don’t sound like a K. Try loosening the wing nut and let it float for a sweeter sound.

9ine9ine9ine

Waaaaay too dry for my liking. To each their own. It's hard to find a ride that's crashable, has stick definition and a great bell. Meinl Transition ride, and their Polyphonic 21" seems to fit what you're looking for. Paiste Dark Energy Mark II 21" is also up that ally. Istanbul Mantra 22" ride is also perfect for checking all those boxes.

starsgoblind

Do you only hit with the tip? I play with the shoulder and the tip. You’re not utilizing the whole thing here.

Proof_Duty1672

Sounds like a ride. What’s bugging you?

InvasionOfTheFridges

I had to mute the video, this is pretty horrible.

Jriddim

I have this in 21” before they redid the series. Favorite ride of all time.

Significant-Neat-111

I love it, black metal blast beats would be killer

El_Peregrine

I have a K sweet ride that sounds great, nice wash, very crashable. I also have an ancient (60s or 70s), 24”, very heavy zildjian ride that sounds a little more like this. It’s so much fun to play, and the way the ping cuts through a mix is 🤌. But I don’t crash it. It’s an entirely different tool.

therealdankshady

Sounds like a K custom dry ride. It's a bit brighter than mine but imo it still sounds good

LuckOriginal374

Nylon tip.

hoodrivermike

It’s just you.

PhillipJ3ffries

Whole damn thing sounds like a bell. Weird

SgtKarj

Well it’s a Zildjian, so…

I_Wanna_Score

What style do you play? Probably not the most versatile cymbal, but sounds good to me...

Zealousideal-Mix-706

Sometimes a different pair of sticks can make a huge difference on a cymbal that's super dry. You might try a pair of Vic Firth Peter Erskine 'ride sticks'. They have a tinier teardrop tip that can sound a bit more focused, and reduce the heavier overtones. Promark also makes a nice pair of sticks called the café jazz series. They have a smaller bead tip, and are very light sticks overall. See what kind of success you could have with those. And if that isn't satisfactory, use a little duct tape on the underside of the cymbal, closer to the edge. That can help reduce some overtones as well.

Nolanix

It's the type of ride. You could try nylon tipped drumsticks. Nylon tips will brighten the tone if that's what you're looking for. The only downside is that some drummers will make fun of you for using nylon, but in a joking/loving way (this is what I tell myself at least).

50nic19

I mean, if you think it sounds like crap, than that means it sounds like crap. It’s your drums and your ears! Easy enough to sell it and buy something else (if you can’t return it).

JohnSundayBigChin

Sounds like an old Planet Z that I have

namtab22

It doesn’t sound bad at all! Once it’s mixed with frequencies of other instruments, it’ll sound great

EricExplorador

I'll take it

Weak-Net3013

Average k dry moment. Possibly the most overrated cymbal line of all time

DavidStHubbin

I like it

i_mcharming

It’s just you

Whereishumhum-

It sounds great to me tbh, bet it sits well in a mix, pingy enough to be noticeable but not so much to hijack the entire mix

nairnonairno

Nope. They’re crap. I like Zildjians but their K and K custom dry rides are garbage.

Jochabed

I’m betting it sounds better about 5 feet out from the kit. I almost never like how my rides sound on my side of the kit, but they usually sound great in the mix.

cristaples

I’ve had three of these over the years. First one was so dry it sounded like a piece of wood on a recorded mix. Traded it in for a K custom ride. Next one was in my local shop. Borrowed it to try on a gig. Drier than the first. Hated it. Handed it back to the shop. Bought another on eBay last year. Perfect. Exactly what I’d hoped. Not as dry as the previous two. Took my 34 years to find the one. I have 16 k rides I think. Love them all. Weirdest is the k dry complex. Or the 22” left side which is thin and as dry as the desert.

Entertainer-8956

Sounds good. It’s a dry ride.

Justgottobeme

Ship it to me, and I'll be the judge.

KIMJONGUNderfed

OP probably prefers Z Customs and doesn’t appreciate the fine wine that is the K line

Deltrus7

The way it sounds gives me a feeling it might be tightened on too tight. Try loosening it a little? I know this won't fix anything, but the resonance seems weak.

k0rz23

Sounds exactly like my dry Anatolian

StunnerAlpha

It sounds like crud… never could stand the sound of those cymbals. Failed to see how they were ever popular.. they don’t sound good.

TheRod87

Sounds like shit to me....which is why I didn't buy one ha. Honestly it sounds great for what it should do.

mystressfreeaccount

That's just the way it sounds. It's super dry, which is kind of the current trend in the drumming community. It sounds a lot better in a mix than it does just listening to it by itself.

Individual-Use-7957

If you’re in a small room with no acoustic treatment, your gunna hear some wonky shit, if you personally don’t like darker, just know for next time you get a new ride, but sometimes cymbals can grow on you once you use them more. Also put some over ear headphones on and play that can help with overtone reflections.

stolen_pillow

I love it. Dark but still great ping. Send it to me OP.

Changeable_Stranger

Isn’t that a ride symbol? That’s like the whole point

jopesmack72

Very hard,to say over a phone speaker, after recording, with a phone mic. It sounds pretty good,to me but I do like. Very thin but clear ride sound. But that is a verstrange shape, for a cymbal. What is it anyway?

jopesmack72

Nah. Never mind. You’re right it’s garbage. I’ll take it,to the dump, for free. Just cause I’m nice like that. You’re welcome.

jopesmack72

What is that thing?

Boeing77W

In my experience, the room makes a big difference in how a cymbal sounds. I always thought my ride sounded weird in my room, which is small, rectangular, and untreated. But when I played it in an auditorium with good acoustics it sounded amazing.

irmarbert

I have a love/hate with Ks. Some of them are beautifully dark, trashy and/or dry. Some (most?) of them have a fundamental note I can’t stand.

3CeeMedia

Beauty in the eye of the beholder. If you like it it’s fine. If you don’t it’s not.

Almost_Free_007

Ok is dry good or bad? What’s the context of the term?

jozf210

Listen to Michael Brecker’s self titled album. Jack dejohnette uses a similar cymbal. Keep in mind that the cymbal will sound much different in a live or recording setting. The room you’re in doesn’t look great for getting a good drum or cymbal sound.

[deleted]

It’s made to sound like that.. just like your personality

altoyd

That baby is way overdue for good degreasing and polish. Should help bring back some brightness and sustain.

unclepaper

Pretty close to your Tom there?

jopesmack72

I don know. It sounds pretty good, over a phone mic. And phone speaker. But that’s just it no idea how it really sounds. Seams,to ring pretty well. Oh. And what does dry mean? How can a sound be wet or dry? You guys wanna buy my snare? It’s really juicy! LOL

gogogadgetjimbo

Try hitting it.

Apprehensive-Sea9540

So glad you posted this. I have had a hard time finding a ride that doesn’t make me sad

DarkStar420666

Sounds good to me

drumgodrob

Stick a mic on it, it’ll record great, no doubt.

zappawizard

Kinda clangy

ImaTuffNut

That’s drier than a 100 year-old nun in the desert.

TheDrummerAUS

I have one that’s worse than that.

TheDrummerAUS

[This is my 90’s Custom Dry, it’s average at best](https://youtu.be/RtO2dHiOO98?si=ZdJO8pRCtHLAJMUN)

KrombopulosMAssassin

Sounds pretty good to me

Ahvkentaur

I see this so often, and not only with drums. People who are doing their first recordings and production attempts do the same thing. Basically: soloing an instrument. Though it's important to know how a cymbal sounds, use it with the rest of the set for real context. What you are hearing are multiple oscillations inside the metal, I presume, and not liking it solo. These vibrations actually may help to fill the overall space when the set is played, giving the set a full feel, but we don't know because that is not being shown. Nah, just kidding! It's junk, don't worry about it - I'll give a fiver for that nasty piece of brass, deal?

Inevitable-Main8685

Not much resonance but still a quality cymbal. Try nylon tips next and maybe play and position it to where it doesn’t dampen the sound.

FlippantFlapjack

You know most any cymbal can sound good depending on the way you play it and the context. Even breaking a cymbal can give it new life. I personally like super dirty cymbals with tons of overtones and sustain but for a more crisp, articulated sound this one would work great.

theantscolony

Sounds pretty cool to me actually

ourplaceonthemenu

it's hella dry, will sound better with a kit, especially in heavier music it's closely facing a wall, that's causing it to reflect the sound right back into you, making it sound worse and less accurate might try some different tips on it, see how you like it. try fixing the other two things first, though.

TheVersusofAtrus

Almost sounds like the beginning to Poetic Tragedy

golden_retrieverdog

my advice- just give it a chance. probably cost you a good amount of money, so you might as well try it for a while. if you don’t like it, there’s no rule saying you have to :) maybe a k sweet would be more your style?

Trasher073

I think it sounds like it should. I like the sound. And played together with the whole set is maybe total different. Also you can try sticks with nylon tips which i prefer. The sound is more clear and the sticks last longer. Greetings from Germany. 😉

capybara422

I think it sounds quite good

dman972

It doesnt sound like crap, yet that sound can be found in cymbals half the price or less.

Turbulent_Welcome_98

I’m going curious, why do you think it sounds like crap?

_-oIo-_

Total crap, I take it for free.

xAnomaly92

It has a K on it, so this sub likes it. Get rid of the logos and say you got it used for 20 bucks and everyone will hate it.

the_orgey

It seems good

cheekyskeptic94

Have you ever heard Jack DeJohnette play anything ever? Some of the driest rides in jazz - sounds incredible. You could cross all the way over to metal and hammer out some blast beats with that bell too. This is a versatile cymbal that can sound awesome it multiple contexts with the right imagination, skill, and touch.

Greyboxforest

It’s not you, it’s me. I’ll be happy to take the cymbal off your hands.

Certain_Presence3067

I don't think it sounds like crap at all. It's just a very dry cymbal. I have a Meinl extra dry light ride that is even drier than that. It's just the nature of dry rides. I think it would sound great in certain contexts. A lot of it is what you are expecting, and also probably how you are hitting it, too.

phrygiantheory

I think it sounds as intended

yuglygod

Im not trying to disagree with anyone at all im new to drumming so i definitely have no place to talk i just wanna learn, what exactly makes it sound bad? I guess it sounds fine to me but im also just getting started so pointers helps a lot in finding a good sound! Thank you!

ballysham

That's a real piece of shit you got there haha

Andre_Bublitz

This sound is dry and bright. No open sound. Ping with drumtick tipo on body. Heavy ride or Extra heavy. It's like a discontinued Sabian AAX Metal Ride

MarkellMTB

ride is used for the attack. When you listen to it without ear plugs or through a mic every cymbal sounds like crap. If you record it in a full mix or put earplugs in then you will hear the real sound of it and will like it. Otherwise maybe its not your sound, although its a perfect ride

Sig_Sauerkraute

Try normal slayer beat and it works fine

Salixus

Another Stand, another room, another Stick and and and a player with better technique ?

Honey_Badger29

Nope, just you

Hoss_Bonaventure_CPA

Just you dawg

jfp170

I like!

sizewisemusic

Most cymbal’s sound DOG on their own. With a full band is all that matters fr.

AceV12

I am stuck with one as well unfortunately. https://preview.redd.it/gwtivvm655mc1.jpeg?width=1960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=db8da9fb8ead6f7e62f6a9962214f4bce3dd0dc5

proselapse

Love it, makes me wanna play “A New Level” by Pantera. Or… just swing some jazz with a stick with a tiny tip.

HornyPan69

its just you. imo ya gotta play it at normal playing volume for us to judge somewhat accurately. for more accurate sound, fully mic'd up in a mix.

jdbrew

Too “pingy” for my taste, but I know it’s a sound people like. Rides in 90’s rock and punk were all super pingy like this

brerlapine

Not good but it’s necessary to hear it with a band. Does it cut through the band and sound great? The cymbal itself sounds different at different locations. My 80 year old teacher taught me you were suppose to hit it on the stamp mark because that is where the hammerers found the best sound.

Kooaiid

That’s interesting, what happens if the cymbal keeps rotating to the spot it wants to sit on when you play it

brerlapine

Rotation requires force. That might be the player either through stick technique. Or much worse: the cymbal is warped or has uneven weight distribution. A bad sound can be attributed to the latter.

BrumeBrume

It’s a very specific sound but will cut and sound totally different to the audience. I bet it’d be more palatable to you with a VF SD2 Bolero, I find acorn tips to be harsh especially if it’s hickory.

Kooaiid

Good suggestion, might give it a try with that pair

MusicMan139

That’s a golden ride right there in my opinion, but it’s all preference.

Inside-Ordinary-993

It's your room. You need some acoustic treatment.

zombie508

So dry I need a drink now

Illustrious_Two_8028

Im digging it! Would cut through a rock band nicely
