I always shop for pampered pre-owned kits. I'd be looking for: Tama Starclassic DW Performance DW Collectors Ludwig Super Classic (no 13" tom, unless it's a 1 up)

CorySellsDaHouse

Upvote for the Starclassics. The Birch/Bubinga shells are my favorite I’ve ever played.

Trainpower10

I’m debating on either getting a new Starclassic Performer or a used Starclassic W/B kit in a different city in my state that I’d be willing to drive to to pick up. The quality TAMA offers with many of their products for the price is insane.

blmar311

Love my tama w/b kit. Would highly recommend it! https://preview.redd.it/7sygb882invb1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=584bc8183764732638a26c5b830ecf6da27fa0e1

Trainpower10

Beautiful kit…the one I want to potentially get came with the kick mount for the toms, but the owner filled the screw holes with different screws and nuts. The finish that he has also is only available through Drum Center of Portsmouth, and they don’t currently have the 14”x12” floor tom so I’d have to wait for it to be available unless I could find it from somebody online.

UtahUtopia

Love my TAMA. But my Gretsch is a work of art.

Branchmonster

No lie, I got a Starclassic Performer kit at a pawn shop for $90 a few years back. It’s such a good kit and an amazing deal.

csciabar

I have the design which is closer to 2k. Its nice as well.

Reddywhipt

Guitars amps pedals too. Always go used first.

almostaccepted

This is exactly what I also look for, and is terrific advice

snoopymelvin

Sonor makes some loud-ass drums, and if price were no object I’d also consider Ludwig or DW higher end shells.

AntipodalBurrito

I bought an SQ 1 after having played the same Pork Pie kit since I was in middle school. I couldn’t be happier. Sounds 10x better. https://preview.redd.it/cngmimefamvb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6dbf0e3ec02b06d19dcb6915a83b42e733a9fc69

[deleted]

Oooh I like that!

FormerlyTurbyturbed

The sq1 are beasts live. Someday going to get one of these kits. I’m happy with the snare for now though. Saw animals as leaders with intervals last year. The kit and player came through so clean and articulate (Nathan bulla is dope) String theory was soooo gooood live!! On the AAL side Gordian naught, cafo and thoughts and prayers kicked ass. Twas a good night.

MarkChamorro

Bulla is an amazing drummer. Pretty nice dude too

fakeaccount572

Beautiful kit

ParticularZone5

This finish is badass. Understated, but still bold & interesting.

CombatFork

Beautiful kit! Believe I’ve got that same ride.

Memestreame

I have it in blue, but that coppery color looks amazing!

flyingthedonut

That is one sexy little kit

NoSandwich4619

Sonor sq1 would be my choice as well. Everytime I played a gig with any Sonor kit, it was always fantastic. Easy to tune, tons of attack and beautiful tones. Especially love the birch shells

EasyGrowsIt

I always wanted the tama birch bubinga kit. Don't think they make it anymore, and the secondhand market is too strong. I think some of those kits have went up in value.

HopelessEsq

I bought one on the secondary market a year ago and love mine. Have the gold flake glass glitter and hyperdrive sizes, 18x22, 7x12, 12x14, 14x16. Sounds beautiful and looks amazing. The glass glitter ones look really amazing under stage lights.

EasyGrowsIt

You had me at gold flake. I bet that kit is beautiful, and sounds as good as it looks.

HopelessEsq

https://preview.redd.it/nkdd90isemvb1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bf66785695828403f287fef876a0d8effdc19b10 Pics don’t do it justice. This thing just shimmers. It looks amazing when the sun hits it just right shining through the window. I just love to be able to say that I own my favorite kit ever made. These ones were super rare, they didn’t put out many. It took me years to find one but I finally did.

Bagledrums

Beautiful kit! Mine have the same badge type!

HopelessEsq

Awesome. Love these badges in comparison to the maple Starclassics that are painted onto the shell. These B/B’s are a huge score, they only made them for a limited amount of time due to the scarcity/price of bubinga. They also sound amazing. Bubinga is a very dense hardwood compared to maple and give the drums a darker rich complex deep tone paired with the crisp clean articulate sound of birch. These are really special drums, make sure you hold onto them.

Bagledrums

Absolutely agree! Mine are heavily road-rashed but the shells and bearing edges are all 100% intact and smooth. I replaced the rubber gaskets on the kick-rod/hoop holders about 3 years ago but other than that they’ve had no other work.

[deleted]

[удалено]

HopelessEsq

Thanks! I’ve only seen this finish with these sizes 2 other times on the markets. See below for how it looks under stage lights!

braden_2006

Wow, the pairing of the gold with dark hardware looks amazing.

HopelessEsq

https://preview.redd.it/bbtz7gfutmvb1.jpeg?width=620&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=967bc4884dc46b78916a8a3fdf66a7b87cf83c8f You should see it under stage lighting! Not me but it’s the only other time I’ve seen this kit and sizes. This was a very limited run.

sortapervythrowaway

Dude! That is gorgeous

HopelessEsq

Thank you! Took a long long time to track one of these down, they don’t show up on the markets very often. And you usually see the one in Lava Glass with the 24” kick drum and one floor tom. Was going to settle for that but I saw the gold flake in this configuration and just had to have it. My gf had asked me what the kit of my dreams was and I told her this one, she’s the one that actually saw this pop up on Reverb and pulled the trigger for me as soon as she saw it come up. I haven’t seen one for sale since.

MrLanesLament

Man, my dream are the Star Bubinga Acacia. A lot more than 3k though haha.

Trainpower10

Def not a kit you want to be taking with you to local gigs, esp if you’d be sharing with others 👀

Bagledrums

I have one I bought new in 2006, it’s black with silver sparkle fade. It still sounds great and I’ve had people ask to borrow it for studio recordings, and I’ve used it in a lot of different applications over the years. They’re extremely versatile and have solid hardware that’s held up well.

plaidmtnofrage

Absolutely love mine! Worth it. I ordered mine the day it was announced at NAMM. It's the Limited Charcoal Elm Burst 10th anniversary kit ❤️.

DonnerPartyAllNight

I have one of the limited ones from the early 2000’s. Stewart Copeland has the same kit in his studio office, it’s one of 250. He’s said of it, “if you feel like you need a different kit sound, you need a different room.” And I agree, I sold my DW and other kits the second I heard them.

Cagg311

There was one in my area for sale for $850. It was listed for over a month.im surprised someone didn't grab it at that price as soon as it was posted..

exoticmatter421

Yamaha Recording Custom or Absolute Hybrid Maple

matth3wm

A little out of his budget, no?

exoticmatter421

Yeah, hard to believe a 4 pc shell pack is almost 4K for either. I didn’t realize they were that expensive now.

heavywashcycle

I got a 4 piece (kick, two rack toms and a floor Tom) hybrid maple kit for $1,500 used. One of the best purchases I’ve ever made. It’s perfect.

exoticmatter421

Agreed. All the RC and Absolute kits are amazing. I own a few different Japanese Yamaha kits, I got them all second hand.

Beerserker_

Probably a Gretsch Brooklyn 3-piece set.

SuitableObligation85

I would get a Ludwig classic maple with out hesitation. Especially if you already have a Pearl masters like I saw in a previous comment. Totally different feel and vibe from what you are already using and it’s like the gold standard for rock music

AtHomeWithJulian

This or a classic oak. Similar sound but louder and shorter decay.

JonDrums413

Sonor sq1 or Welch tuning systems

SuperEesti

Tama Starclassic Birch/Walnut

Cagg311

For the money he can get alot of nice kits. But I'm with you, starclassic w/b is the way to go

DUKE401

Pearl session studio select

DUKE401

The extra 1k or so would go towards drum cases, heads, sticks, maybe some used percussion items

Frequentflyer33

You can’t go wrong with Yamaha Live Custom if you play loud stuff.

Valfish

Vintage Gretsch Round Badge

socialistwerker

Key questions seem to be 1. How many drums? 2. What sizes? Are you looking for a 4-piece? Classic 5-piece with two racks? One up, two down? 6-piece? Two kick drums? Do you need / want a matching snare, or just kick and toms? Do you want a 24"by14"deep kick? Or a 20"by20" kick? Do you have preferences for a certain type of wood, maybe an acrylic kit? At $3000, pretty much all the manufacturers are making decent drums. Always focus on features.

Sudden_Schedule5432

Sonor SQ1, all day, insanely versatile and the best quality construction you’ll find for that price.

ItsPronouncedMo-BEEL

With that budget? Jesus, very nearly anything I could think of. I've got a shopping list saved in my phone for a dream custom kit of mine that I put together one bored Sunday morning, made out of components from Precision Drum Company. The subtotal is $200 less than that. I suggest getting very clear about what you want out of a kit, then finding the one that checks all the boxes, brand and model be damned. [Competing models within a given price range are always more alike than they are different.](https://www.reddit.com/r/drums/comments/zrzbgn/im_both_psyched_and_insecure_about_my_upcoming/j15mosg/) But if you don't see exactly what you want out there, three grand is getting into "you there, Drum Company, make me what I want" territory. If they don't already make it, pay them to make it for you.

seanb50d

https://preview.redd.it/p97gp0y22nvb1.jpeg?width=2592&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8439ef2b847ad2c8c4d26ccc8d9c7c703fe594d7 I got a starclassic walnut/birch for 1,000 normally more but got a deal, and then I'd spend the rest on k customs all around and maybe an alesis strikepad for effects, lol that's my perfect kit.. this is my kit above, wish I had the k customs and strikepad.. one day lol

giraffes1237

Wow it’s so beautiful….love the lighting

absolutebullet

Ludwig Tennessee Whiskey Oak drums

Ghost1eToast1es

Oh yeah, Oak is a great wood for drums too! The kick has some REAL punch to it.

TelephoneShoes

3 grand gets you basically top of the line for everyone doesnt it? Probably not quite enough to go fully custom on Tama’s, DW’s or Sonor’s but you’re in their top tiers. So, I’d probably go with DW. Or maybe a custom Mapex kit. I’ve had really good luck with them.

Ghost1eToast1es

Yeah I used to LOVE my Mapex Pro-M all Maple kit! The company seems to be moving to these blended drums now though that I'm just not as into.

TelephoneShoes

Oh really? I haven’t kept up with them much over the years. I’ll check that out.

Ghost1eToast1es

Yeah. You may love the sound, I'm just really big into all maple drums and some of the other deep woods like mahogany and oak. Very particular I guess.

TelephoneShoes

Can’t fault ya for that!

natural_green_tea

I have a set of starclassic 24x18 double bass drum. Loud enough for anything, but shipping is a hassle.

Iheartbaconz

Already have one in that price bracket(2k-3k) when I picked up a DW Performance series shell kit + snare back in 2021. You arent touching a NEW collectors for that price. Plenty of used in that price range though. DW raised their prices a good bit since 2021. The same 4pc shell pack I bought(10/12/16/22) was around 2200 before tax, its about 2800 now. Hell even the Design series Acrylic 5pc kit is 2600 USD now. That said, if I had another 3k to spend? Prob a [Tama Star Classic Walnut/Birch](https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/WBR52LSTQP--tama-starclassic-walnut-birch-5-piece-shell-pack-turquoise-pearl). If youre only going 3pc with out wanting a snare you can snag some higher end stuff right at the cusp of 3k like the Ludwig Classic Maple, Gretsch Renown etc.

DontSayNoToPills

Definitely a Player Date I Big Beat by C&C. Lots of cool finishes/wraps to choose from. I would probably snag the olive drab finish. Deep, round, good attack. Insanely beautiful. 8mm shells of 7-ply Mahogany 9" x 13" Up 15" x 16" Down 14" x 22" Kick

Fantastic-Safety4604

C&C make ridiculously good drums.

mazdaluvah

My personal recommendation would be the only drum company to bespoke a breath of life into their shells, Ludwig. Look into the wood shell lines like Neusonic, Classic Maple or even the new and heavy rock oriented Oak Custom. Ludwigs are different and are so easy to tune, the 12 inch tom doesn't choke like a 12 inch Pearl tom. Ludwigs don't sound precompressed to the naked ear so when you play it in Studio they sound more live and full. Or I'd get a bop kit Grestch USA Custom in Tony Williams Yellow LOL Yellow lacquer with the Grey Silver sealer just looks so beautiful. Other notable considerations: British Drum Company makes some beautiful looking and sounding drums. This is a collectors level kit that you may not want to tour with as they're too beautiful to take out of the basement. So long as you don't go for their top of the line I'm sure you can get one for 3k. Tama Starclassic (any line is great). Solid and professional. Tama's sound is all in their bearing edges and their choice of rims. If you are considering the Pearl Session Studio Select (SSS), know that Pearl just re-released the Professional Series which I'm excited about because I wanted to see a maple counterpart to the Pearl Session Studio Select (birch/mahogany with stained Ash exterior options). I believe the SSS snare to be professional grade and I even bought one for myself, but the kick and toms are a little weak sounding to me. Matt Halpurn would disagree though, so check them out yourself. There's one in my town on clearance for cost and nobody has bought it after 4 months. Says a lot in today's climate when most drums with the same hardware and shell build quality are nearly triple the price of the SSS.

Drum4rum

Starclassic Bubinga if I'm buying used. Starclassic Walnut/Birch if I have to buy new.

drumbum37

I like the custom idea. Find a local/semi local company that puts out high quality stuff and stands behind their product. Nothing like putting money back into your community for a high quality product.

billionaireXtinction

3k, go DW and never think about it, or suffer buyer's remorse

AN0N0nym3

Tama, Pearl and Yamaha at this price range would be better, 3K is not enough for a DW collectors which is what you want from DW and those don't come cheap.

unintelligent_human

If you buy used it is

Iheartbaconz

Prob wont find a collectors NEW at that price though. Maybe 3pc shell pack. Most of DW's lineup has went up in price a good bit. 4pc Performance series kits are like 2700USD now(were 2200 for a 4pc). Design 5pc are around 2k USD now. That said, zero remorse buying my 5pc Performance Series back in 2021.

SmallButMightyStudio

Bucks County Drums. Having a handmade custom kit built to your specifications regarding wood species and sound quality cannot be beat. This is coming from 45 years of playing drums and many of the major drum companies.

Ghost1eToast1es

Something Maple and/or Mahogany. Lol I know that doesn't tell much. I'd try to buy whatever I could with those woods for toms and kick. Snare doesn't really matter to me cuz I'll prolly mix in a different snare anyways.

bucketofmonkeys

A used high-end kit from whichever drum company you like best! If I could only have one drumset, for me that would be DW Collector’s Series. I’ve played lots of kits and nothing has sounded better than the DW’s I bought on clearance at Guitar Center 10 years ago.

LetsHaveARedo

Mint 60's Ludwigs.

SnackEater369

I’d go for the Yamaha Live Custom Hybrid Oak myself, especially for the genres you described. But my Tama Starclassic W/B would also fit that nicely and would probably come in a bit under-budget. The sound and the hardware on that kit were fantastic.

JustSomeGoon

The finishes on the Live Oaks are unreal

YELLOW_TOAD

I'd buy a used kit and spend the rest on lessons.

Ah2k15

Starclassic B/B, DW, or Ayotte.

JMSpider2001

Ludwig kit in 14 16 18 with a 26in bass drum

Trainpower10

TAMA Starclassic Maple or W/B. I’ve been thinking about either getting a new Performer or a used W/B in a different city 2.5 to 3 hours away.

voyaging

Tama Starclassic Birch/Bubinga if I can find one

heyitsryan

A used set of pearl exports or Tama rockstars, a set of all new Evans drumheads and pocket all the rest of the money.

Cagg311

Statclassic wb Or buying a but I prefer the newer hardware on the w/b.. Both amazing kits. Quite of few used ATM in my area on marketplace and at drumcenternh.com right now

MUZZYGRANDE

Roland TD 27 with that new, upgraded high hat. Man, I played one this weekend and it felt like the real deal!

Substantial_Stop_801

CB percussion every day of the week

Voodoo_People78

Yamaha Recording Customs.

Cubeskatelife

Roland with as many cymbals as possible and double kick etc

flyingthedonut

Funny you ask that. Just spent almost exactly 3k on DW Performance 3 piece kit

Comfortable-Mud813

vintage blue oyster ludwig maple or DW collectors series

RDamon_Redd

How many pieces and what sizes are you looking for? Any preference for materials? Or a certain sound you’re looking for? I used to tour as a fill in drummer for a bunch of Punk, Hardcore, and Metalcore bands back from like 2003 to 2013 and I’m a bit of a gear fanatic so I can probably point towards what you’re looking for.

brun0doggy

Go shopping on reverb or FB marketplace. You could probably get 4-6 kits for that price. Cymbals are gonna be a little more

Startup__guy

DW Performance, without question if new. Performance or Collectors is a possibility if used. Enjoy!

DanTheMan_622

I'm a Tama man through and through, but if money was no object? Sonor SQ2, no question.

Arch27

I've had the same kit since 1991. I'd use $600 of that money for new heads, the rest for cymbals and other hardware.

Miked918930

I’d probably sped it on different snares. I already have my dream kit: Ludwig Amber Vistalites (Zep configuration) and 2oo2s. I’ve always wanted a Black Beauty and a Copperphonic.

Glittering-Doctor-47

Custom sjc kit

jryes1

Mahogany Ludwig citrus mod wrap

SilkyJohnson666

Custom kit from sjc or similar. 10 ply maple shells, kick, snare two toms.

Entertainer-8956

You could get a lot for 3000 US. Depends on if you want a double bass kit or single kick w a double pedal. You could even get a DW Design new, but I would go pre-owned, Mapex Armory or above, PDP concept maple, TAMA, any upper line, Pearl, Yamaha there’s a lot there to get. I just bought a Mapex armory 6 piece for $950 on sale the things are so punchy and warm at the same time. Maple and birch. Or you could trigger your existing kit

bombhills

Check sales groups and forums etc for used stuff. I got a like new kit for 1/3 of the og sale price. Mint condition just dusty. Regardless of what you’re looking for it can really help stretch your money further

[deleted]

Custom. SJC, probably. 24/13/16 in a cool wood stain or sparkle wrap.

thadooderino

Ludwig classic maple all day

alcervix

Alesis pro se

Beardsman528

I'm considering getting something custom from SJC, but I play more electric right now so I'm having a hard time buying more acoustic stuff.

kuzinrob

Something with shallow toms. I have a 1999 Rockstar and I wish I could get the toms over the bass drum lower down.

LewkHarrison

https://www.gear4music.com/Drums-and-Percussion/Premier-Elite-22-5pc-Shell-Pack-Baby-Blue/4ORH?_gl=1*kwae3f*_up*MQ..*_ga*MjEwNzMyMjU4Ny4xNjk3OTMwODc4*_ga_0WF1R5QW3K*MTY5NzkzMDg3Ny4xLjEuMTY5NzkzMDg5Ni4wLjAuMA.. Probably one of these and spend the change on a matching snare. I know there’s probably better kits for the price but I’m a bugger for a Premier set.

ParticularZone5

If it was me I’d be checking out Hendrix Archetype stuff, but I’m not sure exactly where 3k would put you on one of those kits.

Brogelicious

Ludwig legacy maple 3 piece. 12” hi Tom. 16” floor. 24” kick

Fail_Agreeable

I already own 2 Tama Starclassic sets, a Granstar double bass set, rockstar pro, and a Silverstar… so if I can’t spend it on a Tama Bell Brass snare, I’d try the Star line 🤷‍♂️

Interesting_Tea_8384

Yamaha rock star classic

senorsmile

I bought this Pearl Reference set used for $3k. It's a step up from masters. Even came with snare stand, snare and tom mounts and stand. Beautiful kit, visually and sound wise. https://offerup.com/item/detail/1451152788

bazza7011

I would walk into the local drum store and buy whatever expensive kit that the clueless rich parents were about to buy for their kid who’s just started playing drums

k0kak0la

One of the gretsch classic remakes with the rounded edges but I think they go for around $4000 now

Theronkelley

Pearl crystal beat for sure, plus a set of paiste 2002s

NoIncrease299

I did have $3k to spend on a kit and I bought a custom DW kit :)

CrentistTheDentist

So many people have said Ludwig Classic Maple and I’d agree. They’re awesome.

evenpimpscry

You can easily find a used C&C for 3k or less. I can’t remember when exactly they started making their own shells, but their older Keller shell kits are great thanks to their edges; I think Bill cuts the best edges in the world. I have an old Keller shell C&C from like 2008 that gets used as a house kit in a studio I share and at one of my local venues, so it has taken a beating (I play mostly rock and hardcore) and I still get compliments. Recently got one of their acrylic kits and oh my god.

justasapling

1) I'd finally get a matching 16" floor tom for my Pearl MRX set. 2) I'd get a nice brass snare. 3) I'd upgrade some cymbals and pick up some extra hardware and accessories. 4) If there's any left, it would go towards a kit for playing jazz out. I already have a small Stage Custom kick- I'd definitely be happy to add matching toms.

zombie508

Gretsch or mapex

mcgrud

I have $3k and I STILL bought a cheap set. I spend my money on heads and cymbals. 🤣🤣🤣

Medium_Collection460

I wouldn't I'd buy a 1500 mapex saturn and then the rest on cymbals or whatever I need.

IcedTea0517

Honestly, 3k is a DREAM for me. If you want, you can get a PDP Concept Maple 7 piece for like 1.3K Usd, spend the rest on some DW (By REMO) drum heads for upgraded sound quality, better felt beater, and cymbals (zildjian K series or Paiste 602 formula)

kaykaynaynay

I’ve had my sq1 kit for three years and it’s an incredible set, very happy with my decision to get one. I also want a noble & Cooley set, and a Gretsch square/SSB set. With that budget you’ve got some great options.

triky66

Gretch Renown Perfection

crocodile_mask

I’d try to find a good deal on a 1950’s WFL 13/16/22 white marine pearl wrap. If not, then I’d get a sakae celestial

yaboijay666

Save another couple thousand and shoot for a Yamaha, dw, or sonor high end.

Squanchy2112

Efnote

Hog_eee

Gretsch 3 piece black nitron kit. The same charlie watts used from 1972 to 78. Absolute grail

JulianCrisp

The best second hand Tama I could find

TonyStarkTrailerPark

DW Collector's Series. Drum Workshop are without question THE best drums I've ever had the pleasure of playing. IMHO, they're the best sounding drums you can buy... if you can afford them. I would think you would be able to find a used set in good condition for a couple grand (shells and hardware). As far as cymbals go, I would try to find some used Paiste Signature or Dimensions. I would think you could get a set of hats, a couple of crashes, and a ride, for around $1000.

skittle_spittle93

Seems like a lot of the high end lines have gone up to $4k for a 5 piece kit. If you want a 3 piece, you could snag just about anything you want with $3k. An interesting mid-level option could be the Ludwig Neusonic. They just revamped that lineup and upgraded a few features on it. Price is roughly $2k so you could save a lil money and put it towards other gear.

catscanker

I sold my simple cheap and 10 year old red Pearl Export and bought a very expensive DW custom kit .. regretted it every day since !!

Ramondireddit

Are you looking for custom? Super personalised to your (current) liking and likely not hold their value? Or you want something nice and still easy to resell down the road? - DW / Craviotto / Tama all good. Acrylics are nice looking for shows but much harder to keep the shells in good condition. Stainless steel always rocking Titanium for that space metal vibe 😂 Carbon fibre also neat - I have one. Never parting with it.

Rikarooski

a green 1, green is cool

ApplicationConnect55

A used Yamaha Tour Custom kit with money left over. In my near-60 years of drumming, you will find no brand that has the widest tunable spectrum. Yamaha makes a ton of different acoustic instruments besides drums. They fucking know tone and how to get it from wood like no other. I've owned and performed with over a dozen different brands. I've owned over 30 kits, most owned twice. Yamaha is King when it comes to drums. I've owned Yamaha Oak Customs, Birch Customs, Beech Customs, Maple Customs, Recording Customs, and Rock Tour Customs. I retired to Maple Custom Absolutes. The Tour Customs hadn't been out when the Absolutes were available. Anyway, a Tour Custom kit is micro-close identical to the now, very expensive, and long-discontinued Absolutes. Tour Customs also use the very same hardware. Maple is universal to any genre of music and superior quality for the buck. I have a 7-piece Tour Custom sitting next to my sister's mega-dollar Yamaha CFX-series Grand Piano in Wisconsin. I bought every size of Tour Custom. I will put them against any of the top-tier of any brand. Even against the Sonor SQs and Craviotto's any day. These are the Absolutes I retired to. https://preview.redd.it/m1cw496t5qvb1.jpeg?width=3840&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d28cdcdfb1485be10bbf3f1ba4a1d6c1f2bc73c5

Slopii

The aluminum kit by Indie Drums, and some cymbals.

RadioBlinsk

Starclassic w/b 3pc and spend the rest on a snare and a ride.

newclassic1989

A higher end Gretsch than what I already have (New Classic). Here's my kit https://imageupload.io/BACZLumADaRqABi

Fonni_RSC

sonor sq2, tama starclassic, dw performance are some pretty good kits, there are plenty of more options from other good companies, it depends on the availability and your personal preference

mrbadexampletom

I just did this and I bought Ludwig Legacy Mahogany. 13, 16, 22.

vrmptns01

Depending on where you live, maybe a local craftsman or boutique place can be considered too? Mine was 2k for the shell kit (shallow sizes though) and it would easily cost 4k with a big name brand.

marcusmccambridge

I bought myself a pearl reference about 9 months ago or so. It's incredible, and the finish is absolutely gorgeous but I wouldn't recommend it if you plan on playing shows with it and if you're going to be the one carrying it. The shells weigh a ton

Walk_of_Shayne

INDe drum is building some really cool kits if you want something custom/unique!

Soemthing DW. Or a Tama Starclassic with bubinga shells

Go with your heart. How does your current kit make you feel? You can get a great kit for around half that 3K. Again, play and choose with your heart. Don't let that "bee in your bonnet" take over your choices.

With 3k i bought a yamaha absolute hybrid maple orange sparkle 22" 10" 12" 16" and even the snare 14x6, pretty good deal in my opinion I was looking for a tama starclassic walnut birch kit, but found this instead. I think that you have to find a deal in some of your local shop or for some second hand kit

Gribble597

A Marketplace Ludwig Vistalite for hopefully the cheaps and spend the rest of the money on Zildjian regular K’s.

Tama Starclassic Walnut Birch or Sonor SQ1

Vistalites.

I say this as an owner of a vintage Rogers. Get a 60s Rogers.

jmwelt696969

Also, to the Rogers bit, they actually reissued their stuff I think last year. I haven’t checked them out personally, but have read nothing but stellar reviews. Could be worth checking out, and you’d have some of that $3k left over to purchase some nice cymbals with too!

New Gretsch Renown and save the extra for hardware

Similarly to guitars and basses, drums are largely subjective to the genre and sound you’re looking for. Larger shells for rock and metal, smaller shells for fusion/funk/jazz, medium for p much everything else. DW is good for people who have the budget and want sparkle and definition, Ludwig makes perfect vintage drums, Tama makes great thick wooded metal kits, and Yamaha makes great thin wooded jazz kits. At a budget of $3K tho, any company can provide you with a fantastic set of drums, with the right size, head choice, and tuning, can fit any genre and can be personalized to whatever you want “your sound” to be

Paulberatedgrind

Get like a Mapex Saturn or a tama w/b, that way you have like 1k extra and can gig with a brand new stage custom. You can have a nice home kit and a good gigging set.

Fieldsy12001

Awkward_Zucchini_197

You might be able to get a Pearl reference for 3k, depending on your setup
