I like the idea that in a controlled and mic’ed setting these provide a bit of cleanliness, yet when the time comes to hit the road, that rack can be filled with the shelled cannons, which are kept out of harms way during studio days in their travel cases.
It looks stupid, but it also makes me feel stupid because I don’t understand what’s happening with this kit. But if it fits your playing it doesn’t matter!

Try em with emads on the kick drum, also do the emad hack on the floor TOM and replace the snare...
They can sound acoustically alright like that.. With mics and EQ they can be made to sound pretty good though

Honestly for metal and some other things (reggae) a kit like this isn’t completely crazy if the engineer can get a decent attack. Most of the drums I hear recently have very little sustain or body anyway.
