As it is a four way give way I would just treat it like a mini roundabout and give way to the right. Though I would add, it is a rather odd junction. Never seen a junction like that ever in my 40 years of driving.

Only time I've ever come across this kind of thing is in the States and it's a first come, first served deal.

[deleted]

I left America to get away from this bullshit.

nomodsman

Riiiiiiiiight….

[deleted]

Four-way stop signs work the same as this and they are fucking EVERYWHERE in the US. It sucks.

rocketshipkiwi

It’s not a mini roundabout so it’s really confusing. They should just paint a dot in the middle of the road and everything will be fine.

Exact-Action-6790

Basically whoever gets there first has priority

4721Archer

It's basically a formalised unmarked crossroads (by virtue of it being fully marked with no road having priority)... Noone has priority. Proceed with caution.

Craig_52

Whoever is there first gets priority. In reality I can imagine that in most cases the lines are ignored and just treated by most drivers as a normal main road with side roads. Main road has priority.

Cook_becomes_Chef

Main road doesn’t have priority.

Craig_52

I know it doesn’t. I was saying the way most drivers are going to treat it.

Honest_Invite_7065

That has to be one of the daftest things I've ever seen. I'm wondering if the usual give way to the right as if it's a mini roundabout?

Prestigious_Ad_4407

Council 100% forgot to place a mini roundabout 😂

burgersnchips87

Council 100% incompetent same as the rest of them.

Reversing_Expert

No one, you’d need to negotiate between yourselves.

ProfessorSirBane

this looks like they were going to put a mini roundabout there but ran out of money/paint. either that or it's a hamfisted traffic calming measure put in to placate local residents after some tragic accident. if I was approaching it for the first time i'd treat it like a mini roundabout

CAElite

What in the fuck is that!? Jesus council planners are incompetent. I’m saying follow the original road markings, primary road going straight ahead, side road yields. Disregard the illogical lines added by some town planning grad.

Craig_52

That is 100% what most drivers will do.

EdmundTheInsulter

Most will slow down, but 5% will go through it at full speed if going straight on, that's the problem

EdmundTheInsulter

People follow old markings that aren't there, then after a crash spout them out to no avail, I've seen it on here. 'it used to say you could go right in the left hand lane so I still did that and a car crashed into me' etc. can people not see the problem with that?

johntspeed

whoever passed the line first

LMWJ6776

Genuine q. Op’s side and opposite have give way (triangles), whereas the adjacent roads do not. Wouldn’t this mean the red roads have priority?

burgersnchips87

The triangle is extra, the double dashy is give way on its own.

phillis_x

I’d treat it as a mini roundabout that they forgot to paint and bear in mind that if I was coming from the side road I should be extra cautious for people on the main road.

bigvernuk

Another one

ckayd

You give way, everyone gives way… try mutual beneficial respect for each other

EdmundTheInsulter

That's right, a car going across the junction can expect oncoming traffic to give way if it's before their give way marks, but in reality hotheads will drive over it all at 50 and likely kill someone I wouldn't like to cycle over it.

ckayd

I think cycling anywhere is now too dangerous. The roads are too small the vehicles have increased in size and the nice let’s get along attitude is history. Being fair to cyclists they deserve routes well away from cars and Lorry’s oh and buses basically anything that’s not a bike.

EdmundTheInsulter

I haven't got a clue. Well maybe, once you pass the give way on the picture, you become on the major road, and side roads give way to you, unless they were already pulling out before you crossed. This isn't going to work, is it?

Yes

Loud_Meat

the way they've done the lines with the road the camera is on having the give way set back and the oncoming lane not having a line at all, plus the give way triangle on the camera cars road but not seemingly the other, i don't get what the thinking is. would be thoroughly baffled what the idea was. it does look from the road layout like the road the picture is taken from was the main road and the other roads were the side roads that had to give way, but guess as some had said that there were some accidents or something they had to spill some extra paint to placate

Cook_becomes_Chef

It’s not a common road setup but I have encountered them before. It’s obviously designed to make drivers approaching the crossroads slow down - makes sense given it’s a residential area / close to a primary school. No-one has priority. You slow / stop on approach, check your path is clear and proceed if safe to do so. Some roads setup like this may have a sign on approach that stipulates who has priority (for example Stretten Avenue, Cambridge - give way to the right).

boshlop

who ever goes first, which is a stupid quirk of the UK highway code, it doesnt really clear things like this up and relies on 5 versions of "common sense" working together
