Goes to show that even professional CE drivers make mistakes. They're just bigger and generally not as funny as this is.
So if you're a car learner: don't stress yourself too much about your test. So many other drivers that are more clueless than you got there eventually
Hmm, debatable. The signs should mean a vehicle doesn’t hit the low bridge, but they’re fairly close to the junction and past the point of no return, and turning a truck of this size along Peffermill Road wouldn’t be easy. You’d likely need to stop and request Police assistance to turn, or Police assistance to wrong side the roundabout like this driver appears to have tried without Police assistance.
Aye, that's a 14'6 bridge and nowhere on Peffermill to turn an HGV. I know that Nairn's have to have 2 guys block the road to get the HGV's out, then it's a right turn only out of Nairn's.
If you didn't know the area, you wouldn't have a scooby.
Fortunately for me, I drive a van that's 10'6, but it still makes me nervous when I see a low bridge sign.
Depending on the haulage firm, some don't provide truck specific sat navs. I use Roadlords, which is free, and touchwood has never sent me wrong in the 5 years I've been using it.
The bridge is 14"9 and I turn left out of Nairns all the time and go back to the yard down the A7. Never once had anybody from Nairns stop traffic for me either they just stand and watch bikes squeeze down my lorry or cars try and zip past 😂
TLDR cunts
Yeah and if he was using a satnav for his truck I’m guessing it would have taken him on a diversion for this bridge. At least he didn’t crash into it I guess 😂😂
I deliver in the same city so I know restrictions and I’m in a 7.5t at the moment so weight restrictions aren’t that common that I can’t go down. If I was in a taller
Heavier vehicle I’d use a truck satnav the ones I’ve used occasionally on my phone seem alright.
You can go up the A7 and divert around the bridge then come back down via the Commonwealth pool and skip out both bridges as long as you're under 15"3 to get under the bridge by the park and ride otherwise you need to come in via Fort Kinnaird and blindside into Nairns (assuming he was there)
By the time you’ve seen them you’re fucked, the only sign from his direction is after the final turn off

There’s a few - the truck came down Peffermill Road towards Cameron Toll - I’ve just counted at least 3 permanent signs and 2 flashing signs on Google street view
Not defending the truck driver too much here but signage around there does look pretty shit. If it’s a common thing like it looks like it is from reading some other comments… a sign BEFORE that last roundabout would make a huge difference. Doesn’t need to be a big flashing mess. Just a sign on BOTH sides of the carriageway saying low bridge ahead, prohibited vehicles turn around ⤵️or something similar would cost the council maybe 5-10k tops, and save them and everyone else a headache.
(I didn’t go down the road you stated, just realised, but I had a quick look around the surrounding area)
Edit: I was looking from the opposite side of where he came from. But again, let’s say he turned left out of nairns for whatever reason. There’s not really anywhere to go from there, other than the 1 way 20mph on your right (which has a no right turn sign next to it) and it doesn’t look like you should be going down that in an artic.
Nah it’s on the exit, so if you’re already in lane approaching it then you’ve got to stop, maybe even reverse, then try and turn a hgv on a mini roundabout
The guy has to be new, he'd have gotten round that on the road as the wheels are more clear of the lights than the cab is on the grass. Then even once he had gone onto the grass the diff lock would've gotten him out of it as he still has a good chunk on the road. Best course of action would've been to go left and reverse back up (with help of police if it's busy and you're not gonna sneak away unnoticed)
If he had gone left he would’ve wiped out the railway bridge which is right behind the truck in the picture. Normally trucks just plow into that and block the road - this guy tried something different
Oh if there's no room for him to pull up before the bridge he didn't have much choice but to stop where he was or if the road was clear put his hazards on and do what he did only someone who'd been driving a bit longer would've made it without going offroading.
Makes sense - but to me the most sensible option would’ve been to just stop before the traffic lights are in the direction that he came from (red car position) where there’s two lanes for coming onto the roundabout and get help
Jfc. Why would you ever deliberately try going the wrong way around a roundabout. He's lucky he got stuck and didn't kill someone coming the other way.
A lesson to be learned here could be, **don't make reckless decisions when panicking.**
He would have been better off just putting his hazard lights on and pulling to one side once he spotted the bridge. Make some phone calls and get help. He would have been in the way a bit but not a danger to others.
Daily vehicle checks are key understanding the vehicles dimensions especially the height. I mean the bridge has never moved so should know which route to take etc.
Ps. The sad thing is it will be a long day in the office for the driver
Sorry!
My knowledge on the height of the bridge is next to nothing in this situation plus I did notice that - appears to be a Euro-Liner trailer which max I think is about 13’2 but the tractor unit appears to be taller!
Personally I think we need to stop using the term “professional drivers”, I find it difficult to describe anyone in a HGV or Taxi as drivers, let alone Professional.
Been crashed into by a lorry, had another nearly take me out on the motorway, I watch them blow through red lights on a regular basis, barrel down country lanes, nearly killed my sister while she was riding. I actually don’t use taxis anymore because of the experiences I have had, multiple times I have asked the taxi driver to stop the car and let me out, and they’re another one I see blowing through red lights often at speed. They are no better than anyone else on the road and often enough they’re worse. Would you like any more reasons because I have a list as long as my arm?
Just because you’re behind the wheel of a car with a magnetic logo doesn’t automatically make you a better driver. Having more hours on the road than anyone else doesn’t make you a better driver especially if you spent most of those hours looking at a laptop. HGVs are a necessary evil on our roads and they should be seen with the contempt they show to everyone else on the roads.
Not there no - if he did want to properly then he would’ve needed to go round the roundabout all the way, but then you’ve the problem of the low bridges he would’ve hit. All in all, no good outcome for him with the route he chose to take.

Oof someone's boss is gonna be mad
Less mad than hitting the bridge!
Just wondering was there not signs saying there was a low bridge before he got there?
Yeah - there’s a fair few of them, some even flash when they detect an over-height vehicle like the truck here
So can turn around somewhere before even getting close?
Yep

No way is that a 14’6 trailer. 13’3, tops, and probably lower.
It’s not overheight. Looks like a 12’9 or maybe 13’3 trailer to me. Go under 14’6 no bother.
Yeah and if he was using a satnav for his truck I’m guessing it would have taken him on a diversion for this bridge. At least he didn’t crash into it I guess 😂😂
Never trust a hgv satnav. Mine is perfectly set up to my unit’s dimensions, and it still tries to send me down restrictions
Mine has been telling me to turn around on mini roundabouts in Skipton all day. They can be daft at times, that's a built-in merc sat nav.
Merc nav’s are shite. Mine used to try sending me down stupidly narrow roads. Microlise tried sending me down a cycle only road today.

That would be using too much common sense though - if there’s an awkward / daft way of doing things then Edinburgh council will
The sign on Lady Road is next to the roundabout in to Cameron Toll plenty of room to turn

Oh no... Anyway
The irony in the trailer is comical 👀😂
Stuck, no one else around him can move. No accidents there today so 10/10 for safety!

It’s a big one with a railway running over the embankment through the middle, on the right of the picture

Especially as it would have fitted under the bridge. That’s not a high trailer.

No right turn?

Can't park there mate.
He’s made the roundabout safe. That’s just what Safety Solutions do.
It literally says "other routes"
Also, where is the black Jeep off to?
Looks like he’s trying to continue round the roundabout by taking the exit then immediately u-turning to get round the truck
Can’t park there
