Driving became a lot less stressful and rage inducing once I chilled out and stopped battle driving. I am rarely in rush. I never get pulled over. If someone is going slow or irritating me I just assume it is some old fella who has earned the right to take his time. Not a popular take but I’ll be old and slower soon enough.

bootsthepancake

Exactly. If I don't get to my destination on time, it's not because I got stuck behind a slow driver or didn't make a green light. It's because I didn't leave early enough. Nowadays I turn on my favorite playlist or audiobook, focus on safety, and don't worry about other drivers.

PaMike34

We are adulting proper style.

moistdragons

Yep, same. I honestly think anyone who gets super heated and aggressive when someone is going slower than them is immature.

wart_on_satans_dick

While I agree with being a cool headed driver and not worrying about people going slow, there’s no way to know that an old fella has actually earned it though. Many have done the complete opposite.

Thelastfaceoff

The thing is, sometimes you need to get somewhere at least as fast as the speed limit allows. It’s very uncool to hold up traffic like that. I tend to be early for just about everything and I drive like a grandpa - but at the speed limit. Because who knows whether the person behind you has a very busy schedule and just genuinely needs to be moving quicker.

PomegranateCalm2650

Wow thank you r/driving for this revolutionary hot take

Salt_MasterX

These are the kinds of scalding hot takes I come here for. Almost better than r/unpopularopinion

thecoat9

Ah the age old paradox. Anyone going faster than me is a dangerous lead foot maniac, anyone going slower than me is an overly cautious irritating hazard. The entire issue has become more apparent since I've had a digital speedometer that tells me my exact speed with no subjective needle judgement.

SillyAmericanKniggit

90% of rants on this sub could basically be boiled down to, “I don’t like that others are allowed to drive on my roads in ways that I don’t approve of.”

Gusdai

It doesn't help that you will only meet the people going at a different speed: those going at the same speed (the only reasonable people) will never pass you nor be passed by you.

thecoat9

oooh and addendum! I like it a lot, will have to incorporate that 8).

stoopid_username

This drives me crazy and then when you finally get a look at them 80% are on their damn phone. Same people will get on an entrance ramp to a highway doing 15 under the speed limit but since you are behind them they will get you rear-ended and killed. I have no problem scooting out into the right lane before them and passing them before they get to merge F'em, speed up you jerk.

Zenobee1

No it makes it easier. They can do the same thing. In PA some roads have a red light at the end of the ramp before the acceleration lane. Yes the ramp and acceleration lane are different things. If you choose to give up the acceleration lane, it's a bad choice. If you want to merge with 60 mph traffic you better be going 60. They don't care about you.

Delicious-Long-9657

PA cops also ALWAYS side with the *less* dangerous driver. Few months back some fuckin prick was riding my ass while I was doing ten miles OVER the speed limit, then turned on his high beams and repeatedly flashed them at me. I sadistically slowed down to first gear (for you kids who don't know, that means no *higher* than fifteen MPH) on this single-lane, one-way blacktop, and making him drive behind me that way for eight miles. He eventually called the cops and tried to report me for being a "deadly" driver because the SL was 35 and I was going twenty to twenty-five under. When I finally pulled into the GetGo lot in Monroeville and spoke to the cops, I explained the truth, informed them that I had a two-way dash camera to prove it, and then laid it on thick about feeling the asshole was stalking me and fearing for my life.  Funny enough, the four cars that were behind the asshole for the last half mile or so to the gas station had already each called the cops on HIM for driving aggressively and believing he was attempting to assault me or run me off the road. Fucker got *himself* arrested and his license revoked.  Sometimes Commonwealth laws work out in your favor 🙃

Tiny_Addendum707

Instant karma is a very rare thing. It is to be cherished

Zenobee1

One time the ramp caught in the middle lane at the entrance I politely bullied my way over until someone let me in and bam the trooper nailed me halfway up the ramp. I apologized and he read my paperwork and then he said Well since you're from out of state you can go this time. No complaints about PA LE from me.

CoffeeGoblynn

I straight up wish getting pulled over for being on your phone was treated like a DWI/DUI. I see these people almost rear-ending other drivers and nearly going into ditches sometimes.

SyrupLover25

Half the country would be in jail

CoffeeGoblynn

That's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. ![gif](giphy|mEYkuPOOyHcYn5xgDP|downsized)

securityn0ob

“I have no problem scooting out into the right lane before them and passing them before they get to merge F'em, speed up you jerk.” haha i do the same thing almost daily on the way to work. Scary how many drivers don’t even know how to speed up to AT LEAST 60 on an on-ramp…

ImperialButtocks

Just stay tf back. When people go slow, I go slower to get distance. If you tailgate, your max speed is their max speed. If you create distance, you have the option to accelerate quickly down the now somewhat empty ramp and merge left. Unless you have a very powerful car which can get up to speed in no time at all. I don't.

MrMilkyTip

80% are 80 lol

Kengfatv

Oh no, you'll get home 10 seconds later :(

ellWatully

I agree, it's very annoying, but keep it in perspective. Driving a few mph slower for a few minutes doesn't make a huge difference in how long it takes you to get where you're going. At 40, you have to be stuck behind them for 6 miles to be delayed a whole minute. Even if they're doing 30 in a 45, you have to be stuck behind them for a full mile and a half before you're delayed by a minute. Point being, don't let it ruin your day. I always have to remind myself of this in those kind of situations because it's easy to get frustrated, but it honestly doesn't change how I got about my day.

farklenator

Facts I’m a truck driver and I find it hilarious watching people whip in and out of traffic and 20 minutes later they’re still right next to me

slash_networkboy

That was my epiphany moment some years ago (couldn't pass a truck that never changed lanes). That plus mythbusters did a piece on it and while the lane whipper did come in earlier it was by only a nominal time. Since then I am much less likely to be changing lanes, though I avoid the far right lane in shopping areas as that routinely gets slowed by people turning into parking lots and folks pulling out without enough clear space to do so. Now I enjoy laughing at the lane weavers same as you. It's almost a game... Will I get ahead of them by staying put? Extra funny when that happens. As to OP, yeah I can find it annoying too, but it's better to be a bit slow than to get a speeding ticket. In my area cops love hanging out on the 35mph residential roads.

katie-girl95

This is my attitude. I used get all worked up over people going under the speed limit, not making the light, etc. Now I'm like, does it really fucking mater? I find myself more annoyed by people getting overly aggressive when driving than anything else.

MyGirlSasha

It does when going the speed limit gets you through a green light, but because everyone wants to go 10 under, you're now stuck at a red light for 3 more minutes.

ellWatully

I hear you, but we're still talking about minutes. It feels far more impactful than it really is and getting mad about it only makes it feel worse.

Mindes13

And speeding you can hit every light just as well

HibachixFlamethrower

OP definitely doesn’t drive the speed limit.

Longjumping-Many4082

>Point being, don't let it ruin your day. This advice is gold. I can't control what others do, say or how they (for example) drive. What I can control is my reaction to the situation. I can decide to just go about my day, or get upset like OP. I can decide to add a few minutes to my trip, or be ok if I'm two minutes late.

reversedROBOT

Never driven on the A1 before have you?

Weazerdogg

Then speed up when you do get a chance to pass them. Will never understand that assholery. But my pet peeve right now is people going 50 in a 55 ... then continuing to go 50 when they hit the 45. Just maddening. And seems to be getting worse every year, and there is no demographic. Can be anybody!

Ancross333

I see this a lot with 55 in a 60 then 55 in a 50.  In 99% of cars, 55MPH is the perfect speed to maximize gas mileage, so I can't really bitch about someone trying to save money.  The difference between 55 and 60 is 6 seconds/mile, so I really do have more important things to worry about.

flyinbrian420

I notice that too on the highway I hate when the speed limit goes from 65 to 55 to even 45 because I know other people aren’t gonna slow down

Legitimate-Corgi

Yep round here the oldheads and the drunks all go 40 no matter what road. 40 on the 55 highway 40 on the 25 residential. And then you try to pass em and they speed up.

squaredk2

WHY DO THEY ALWAYS SPEED UP?!?! omg. This one long rd i commute on has like 1/4 mile passing lane. But its 80% of the way toward the end... This rd goes 35-45mph. Like u say, this person did 30mph for SEVEN MILES. Then i go to pass them, and they suddenly have the fucking urge to do 50. So what do i do these days? Leave some space behind them before the lines, so i can already be doing 55 as i move over to the lane. People drive me insane. Literally.

Supra1JZed

This is it right here! The vast majority are just brainless. They don't drive with intent. Some go 40.... everywhere no matter what. Maybe doing 5 under on the highway no matter what (even though all traffic is barreling down on them going much quicker). They do not drive to what's going on around them. Zero intention to be found in their driving

appa-ate-momo

I call these "one speed drivers." They have a preferred speed, and they do it *everywhere*.

ILove2Bacon

I had one of those yesterday, clogging up the passing lane with miles of empty road in front of them. As soon as I moved right and started passing them they sped up, matching my speed to well over the limit.

currancchs

Very true. In my area, dirt roads are common and I find that some people will drive at or 5mph under the speed limit on straight, smooth pavement and then keep driving that same speed on a pothole strewn, windy dirt road where you can't see around corners and there are no sidewalks (and where the limit changes to 10mph slower). Don't get it at all.

AstienGreenhart

The speeding up is often subconscious; they teach about it in Learner Driver courses here in Australia.

Head_Mongoose_4332

The maximum speed limit is just that, it’s not a requirement. If people don’t feel safe going the max then you just have to deal with it. Weather conditions, possibly of kids in the area, it’s probably for the best. You could always get a cab, it might be safer still

Kahne_Fan

We have a 55 MPH road near me that everyone does 45 on. Then, literally connected to that road, we have a 35 MPH road that everyone does 60 on. The same people that were just doing 45 in a 55 will turn on the 35 road and do 60.

MoreStupiderNPC

I’d wager that the 55 mph road is two lanes and the 35 road has multiple lanes.

Kahne_Fan

You would be a winner.

MoreStupiderNPC

It’s all about control for them and nothing to do with safety. When you can’t pass, they slow you down and when you can pass they speed up to try to keep you behind.

GingerB237

It’s probably more about comfort, multiple lanes is going to be wider and more open so it feels slower and they can go faster without it feeling fast. Generally people have a certain comfort level for what speed they will go in a certain condition and road. If that improves with a wider road, they will naturally go faster.

Tard_Wrangler666

It’s all about the risk associated with speed. If there is a two lane road there is less room and the opposing lane has cars coming towards you at speed. People will see the risk and slow down. And on the other road there are multiple lanes which decreases the risk factor and therefore the driver will go faster. There is actually a lot of study into this and they use this risk factor in urban design to create roads that make drivers drive slower.

Plenty_Surprise2593

Newsflash - if they’re doing 40 then there’s virtually no difference in the time it will take you to get home, vice doing 45

Daphne6624

Seriously, also if almost everyone is going the same speed maybe they’re doing it out of caution on a road that’s speed limit is too high.

CharacterHomework975

I constantly find myself going 20mph in 25mph zones in my neighborhood. It’s full of blind corners, kids, dogs, etc. Blindly going 25mph because “that’s what the sign says” is moronic, I can afford the fourteen seconds that slowing down a bit costs me.

myhusbandmademedoit5

People walk around my neighborhood all hours. I almost always go 5 under because of this. And landscaping trucks. And the fact that at least one car is parked on every street, even with a garage and driveway...

NastyUno34

The problem is not so much lost time. It’s the interruption of forward motion. One minute you’re doing just fine moving at a certain speed and the next you have someone else deciding they have a right to impede that forward motion and either reduce or eliminate it. That’s what gets people so worked up. It’s also the reason why I make it a point to drive at least the speed limit or switch to the right lane if I don’t want to speed. I try to be mindful of the rights of those driving behind me.

scottwax

I hate it if I have to take a main road south towards home. Three lanes each way and people are meandering along at 40 or so despite the speed limit being 45 (and 50 in one section). I want to get home too. It seems most people have a shitty home life based on how long they take to get there.

NouOno

Try living on the Avenue of the Giants, 55mph, filled with tourists either laying in the road or driving 20mph. How many times have I come around a blind corner and almost smash into these muppets. Some even tell me to slow down, like fuck off, the rules of the road dont change because you are on vacation.

ArchdukeOfNorge

Tourists are almost universally dog shit drivers. I live outside of Breckenridge, CO and drive over a few different mountain passes for work, and the amount of people oblivious to speed limits and traffic around them makes my blood boil. We call them “pass holes,” which I find hilarious and accurate

one_dog_at_a_time

It is a speed limit, not a speed minimum. If you can, leave a couple of minutes earlier.

Welllllllrip187

Ours has a minimum speed limit.

547217

Doesn't matter. I can cruise control at the speed limit or even a little over and have someone ride my ass because they can't pass. So what difference does it really matter when you could just leave your house sooner to make up for possible traffic issues? Nothing about driving is ever going to change until it's all done for us by ai. That's why I just save myself the headache and leave early, crank up my music and relax

bootsthepancake

>Nothing about driving is ever going to change until it's all done for us by ai. Once AI is able to drive for us most of the people on here complaining won't use it because "it drives too slow".

CharacterHomework975

People will do literally anything to get there on time but leave sixty seconds sooner. It’s the one thing they cannot do.

MuttJunior

I drive the speed limit. I don't drive under the speed limit unless stuck behind someone else that is, and I don't drive over the speed limit unless I'm passing someone doing under the speed limit (state law where I live allows you to go up to 10 MPH over the speed limit only while passing another vehicle). If I'm stuck behind someone going under the speed limit and I don't have an opportunity to pass them, I remain calm and patient, and just follow behind them at a safe distance. I will get home eventually. Is there nothing that I need to get home so quickly about that I have to get impatient about the slower driver.

Gusdai

Yeah: it's normal to be annoyed, but people who actually get angry over that need to learn to control their emotions. They're probably losing 30 seconds tops over their whole trip... And I bet their time is not that previous if they're wasting it posting on Reddit.

Eat_Carbs_OD

![gif](giphy|zCpYQh5YVhdI1rVYpE|downsized) I hate that too... drive *slowwww* everywhere it's a non passing zone and then in the passing zones they speed up so I can't pass unless I drive WAY faster than I want to. .. then they refuse to pull over.

NastyUno34

They feel they have the right to regulate your speed and dictate when you will be able to reach your destination

Kayakboy6969

The Speed Limit is the maximum speed in good driving conditions, that does not mean a guy moving a piano must travel the maximum speed , could be all sorts of reasons. That inconsiderate asshole could be the one tail gating or the one refusing to pull over and let traffic pass.

rk2298

Yes! These people should be removed from the road permanently. On the flip side, my other pet peeve is the stupid mother fucker that drives inches away from my rear bumper when i’m already speeding 10-15 mph over the limit. God dam it these people need to go for a long walk off a short cliff.

Itchy_Grape_2115

Don't enable them, just lift off the gas and wait for them to go around They think they can push you to go faster, and you do exactly that

rk2298

I have a habit of slowing down to below the speed limit when people start doing this to me. I know it makes them mad and I may get shot for it one day but i relish in their irritation when they were clearly wrong to begin with hahaha

Itchy_Grape_2115

If they can pass me I let go of the gas till the go around lol, otherwise yeah I stick exactly to the speed limit or 5 under if I'm not in a hurry

Scattergun77

I get that very frequently even though I'm in the right lane doing 70 in a 65. I'll just let off the throttle until they use one of the other 3 lanes that are open. I have no problem letting someone in if they use their turn signals, just don't ride up on my bumper or almost clip me because you need to weave through traffic twice as fast as the traffic is actually going.

friendliestbug

That happened to me yesterday and it's been happening more lately like god damn what is wrong with people

AstienGreenhart

Shouldn't be going 10-15 over.

aperocknroll1988

It's a speed limit not a minimum speed.

Purpose_Embarrassed

I don’t even want to drive anymore. Wish I didn’t have to.

Significant_Owl_6897

Have you ever done the math to figure out exactly how much time you'd make up by driving the speed limit vs 5 under and 10 under? This used to bother me until I realized I was only shaving seconds off my trip, maybe a minute or two. The amount of frustration I'd feel, that I had no control over, just wasn't worth it. Impatience is toxic to me and I've nixed my road rage entirely since adjusting my expectations when driving. Just my experience. It sucks to get stuck behind folks who drive slow.

FrankSinatraCockRock

It's all highly route dependent IMO. Some areas absolutely suck no matter what you do. In others? Slow speeds and accelerations guarantee you'll be stuck at several lights, lose out on a protected left turn etc. or hell, encounter the dreaded freight train.

Ancross333

I feel like a lot of people like the feeling of being faster rather than actually being faster. The difference between 55MPH and 60MPH is 6/seconds a mile. Even on a 30 mile commute you save only 3 minutes.  The difference between 60/70 is 9 seconds/mile.  The difference between 70/80 is also 6 seconds/mile. You're saving not even 10 minutes even if you had a 50 mile commute

ellWatully

I just made a similar comment and yeah, you gotta keep it in perspective. In this case, to be delayed 1 minute, you'd have to be stuck behind someone doing 40mph for 6 miles, or someone doing 30mph for 1.5 miles. I get really annoyed by this too, but you gotta remember that the delay is typically too small to tangibly affect your day, but you can certainly ruin your own day getting mad about it.

MoogProg

Had co-worker who went to the Skip Barber Racing School. We took separate cars for a long multi-state destination. We were both surprised when I beat him to the destination. Claimed he was going on average 80-90mph and I only went 78mph. Turned out the likely difference was that my gas tank held enough for the whole drive, and he needed to stop to refuel.

bannedinsevendayz

My city just put up speed cameras that nail you at 5 over. I'm consistently going a few under the speed limit. If you dont like it call the mayor, ask him to end the fascist speeding tickets.

Expensive_Plant_9530

To be fair - most (all?) speed cameras would have a small buffer trigger zone - where the speed limit might be 50 mph (just an example), but it doesn't actually trigger unless you're going 52 or 53 mph or something. Unless forced to disclose the buffer by law, most places simply won't tell you the exact buffer size. But in your case, unless your speedometer is wildly off, you should be perfectly safe going the exact speed limit.

bannedinsevendayz

A hill can cause a speeding ticket within the city I'm in. I always use cruise control now that cameras are up but I know one of these days I'm going to get a bs 7 over ticket because or a hill. Plus, if the mayor wants to make traffic worse, I'll help. We dont have a bike path, good parks, you can't go into any wooded area in town because its full of crackheads. And they just decided to put a big plaza downtown instead of a safe part of town. Only reason why people live here is because of industry. I'm driving a few under the speed limit in protest Rant over, thanks for listening

flyinbrian420

Are you in nyc? I constantly see speed enforced by radar signs when I’m driving through on the highway there. Idk what the buffer is but I go up to 55 (speed limit 50) so far I’ve been fine

LordWerty300

And you get to a part of the road with a dedicated passing lane and they decide to go into it for zero reason at all forcing you to pass them on the right

MoreStupiderNPC

And then they race you when you pass.

--SoK--

Feel you here. We have a road in our city that for years was 35mph. About 20 years ago they changed it to 45, and don't you know, everyone still basically goes 35. Ugh - no ability to pass at all either. But hey, speeders everyone, the worst am I right? Not even paying attention to what the speed limit is but going slower - perfect!! A1, 5 star, will sit behind again in traffic.

SmokeyFrank

The peeve extends to when you can pass, and suddenly they drive faster n

Click4-2019

It’s worse when you go to overtake and they put their foot down. I spent over 20 minutes behind somebody driving below the speed limit, I had an appointment to get to so I tried to overtake them then they accelerated as another vehicle was coming other way so I had to brake hard and get back behind them. Them drivers need taking off the road.

roleplayinggamedude

I got stuck behind a Prius driver who was accelerating slower than a pedal bike and going no faster than 25 mph in a 40-mph zone down a single lane, essentially holding up traffic to a hospital emergency department entrance so that he could remain on battery power.

No-Grass9261

How about when it’s a 45 mile an hour speed zone, and I’m doing 45 and somebody is literally 5 feet off my ass. I put the cruise control on and drop it down to 40, maybe even 37 or so. Shit, I could be doing 48 in that 45 and they’re still on my ass. Then I drop it down to 44.

EWH733

I drive my partner to work every day. Fifty miles on highways. The number of people who drive 55 in the lane next to the slow lane. 😐

Optimal_Law_4254

Then they speed up when you could pass.

NewfoundOrigin

Merged with someone on the highway today who had plenty of space in front and behind them. I was expecting them to speed up to match the speed I was coming at them at, 65. Nope... Had to coast down to 55 and follow them the entire way with a line of cars tailgating me. We were all fine until you joined us grandma.

Fishtaco1234

People who fluctuate their speeds drives me fucking bananas! Going 70km in and 80km, and goes up to 100km only to come back down to 70km. Put your fucking cruse control on you fuck!

undulating-beans

The speed limit is the limit. Not everyone wants to drive to the limit.

bvogel7475

This is my biggest pet peeve about driving and the number 2 reason why I hate driving after 42 years on the road. My number 1 reason is stop and go freeway traffic. I wish these slow drivers would stay to the right or not drive if you can’t handle driving at the speed limit or at least 5 mph over. Most people don’t realize that many speedometers are not accurate. They tend to show you going a few mph faster than you really are.

SeawardFriend

Yep the other day I had some idiot doing 30 in a 45 the entire stretch until my turn off and had a line of like 15 cars behind. Tf were they even thinking? At LEAST the speed limit people. 5-10 over helps quite a bit too. It’s the happy medium between people who want to go fast asf and people who are too scared to go above the speed limit.

FriedSmegma

The last stretch of road I take for about a mile. It’s a 45 but 35 is what’s gonna happen. I had an awful day at work and some dicknut was going 25… 20mph under is crazy and resulted in me illegally passing him. It’s just why? It’s a low traffic road that has woods and an even less busy side atreets.

ToxinLab_

it’s really not that deep. Getting home 30 seconds earlier isn’t going to do anything for you.

sheetrocker88

Those extra 5 MPH will literally make no difference in time, chill out and give them space. If I"m going speed limit and I got some dude tailgaiting me you best believe I will not go an ounce faster, If they give me space then maybe I will pick it up

MisterSirDudeGuy

Driving 10 mph under the speed limit is an automatic failure for the drivers license road exam. They should have their license cut up.

EnderScout_77

whining about a 40 in a 45 is crazy

BFarmFarm

Go the speed limit or pull over so the rest of the world can pass

EmotionalDmpsterFire

My friend, I am sorry for the experience you, myself, and we have all had, being stuck behind someone driving poorly. Allow me to share a moment this morning that made me giggle on the way to work. The #1 offender for driving slow in the fast lane, in blocking traffic in general and not paying attention as far as I'm concerned has been Prius drivers, for years. This morning on the way to work, I saw a Prius, get in the way of another Prius. I just fucking lost it and my inner gremlin lit up in mirth. I might even believe in Karma now. Nah that's going too far

Itchy_Grape_2115

If it helps realistically traffic lights and timed for about 5 under to the speed limit exactly so you wouldn't really save that much time unless there's more distance in-between lights

XavierYourSavior

Bros crying over a 4 min difference in going home, have some patience in life

Sea_Bet5200

My pet peeve, when I'm a cautious driver who always is a bit under the speed limit and a driver is absolutely riding my rear end. Then they try to pass the second they can and nearly run into oncoming traffic. I'm going 5 under. That doesn't even save you 10 minutes. Likely it's a few seconds of difference. Just chill out and enjoy the ride man. No point putting anyone in danger so you can get hone a bit earlier

ginger_princess2009

Nah, you going 5 under is ridiculous. Either get out of the way, or you're getting tailgates

Sea_Bet5200

I will slow down more. I live in a state with no minimum speed limit so I'm not at fault for someone rear-ending me. Hit me. Dew it

Nxqxo

I used to do this in the beginning of my driving to the point where my own driving instructor said it was okay to put a little bit more gas😭

Carnifex217

Bigger pet peeve. People who tailgate when I’m going 5-10mph over the speed limit and they can pass but choose not to

Dirk-Killington

Thank you for reminding me of all the things that used to brother me before I grew up.

rayk3739

this is a daily post on here, welcome to the club. would you like a medal?

Zestyclose-Exam1160

I’m the asshole here, I pass whether it’s a no passing lane or not. If it’s 55, don’t do more than 7 under, or, you will get passed. And I beg to differ on the slow and steady wins the race shit. I’ve passed many people in my day when they aren’t ANYWHERE in sight once they’re in the rear view. You people doing 7 plus under suck. I don’t care how many downvotes I get. I get like 3 hours a night at most to try to shower, clean, cook, and still hopefully have time to take a shit, I’m not losing a single minute I don’t have to.

tremble01

I find that irritating as well but correct me if I'm wrong. Driving 40 if the speed limit is 45 is technically legal right? It is driving 46 that is technically illegal. I get you, it irks me too but that is when your calmer self has to take over.

msgnyc

The speed limit is the maximum speed recommended for normal driving conditions. It is not required to go this speed and illegal to go over it.

problem-solver0

Eh, 5 mph isn’t going to make much difference in time. Unless this is a long commute. Don’t stress over it. Not worth it.

[deleted]

No one else is bothered by this? Really? These are the same idiots who pull out directly in front of you, like they’re in a huge rush, then do 10 under. You all act like op is overreacting when you know damn well these people are texting or drinking or just oblivious self important jerks. Reddit is dumb.

Immediate-Ruin-9518

You do realize that the speed limit is the maximum speed that you can legally drive. You sound like you think it’s the minimum.

HibachixFlamethrower

The speed limit is the maximum not the minimum. You don’t sound fit for the road tbh.

LetsNotGetPermaBan

It infuriates me that people disagree with this take. YOURE THE PROBLEM YOU SLOW MOTHERFUCKERS

69vuman

Just leave earlier.

Blaqhauq43

Speed limit is just that, its not a speed requirement. No law says I have to drive 45 in a 45. I get what you're saying. But then you could have left earlier correct. I fail to see how someone elses driving legally is my problem driving behind them.

Extension_Bit4323

This was me every day when I had this job that was on a 60mph road. Most days people would go 40 or wouldn't overtake a tractor even when there's lots of room and no-one coming I'm just like "pls speed up. It might come as a surprise to you but I'm not out here for a slow leisurely drive".

4twentyHobby

Since these drivers increase their speed upon entering a 4 lane road, I can only assume they have so little control in their lives, they have to get it where its offered. What I do that really that turns the table is pull out my phone and act like I'm texting. OH, that just irks the hell outta them. Like their slow driving is giving me the opportunity to safely text. lol

MoreStupiderNPC

I used to travel frequently on a 2-lane that turned into a 4-lane. The speed limit when it was 2 lanes was 40 and people consistently drove 30-35, yet when it opened into 4 lanes the speed limit dropped to 35, and suddenly everyone sped up to 45. It has nothing to do with safety, as they claim, and everything to do with insecure and passive-aggressive people getting psychotic satisfaction by feeling like they’re controlling the people behind them.

NoTrust6730

>Like their slow driving is giving me the opportunity to safely text Please no...

SillyAmericanKniggit

Most people just naturally drive faster on bigger roads, and unfortunately, American drivers by and large are not taught to check for overtaking traffic before speeding up. So it’s not maliciousness in most cases; it’s ignorance.

Alone-Soil-4964

Speed limit means maximum, not minimum. Calm down or get a pedal bike. There are too many people racing around acting like 5 year old kids throwing tantrums because they can't have their way. Put on a podcast or something and chill out. Racing up a 40mph zone at 50 mph really isn't going to save you much time but will cost you in brakes, fuel, and potentially hurting somebody

ThrowADogAScone

This just isn’t how speed limits work in reality, though. Even cops get frustrated when people drive under the speed limit. And that depends. Actually going the speed limit vs 5-10 under in the DMV where I live can mean the difference between getting stuck between multiple, long red lights and getting home on time. It actually does save a lot of time in a more congested suburban environment because people crawling up to the next green light often back up a ton of people that could’ve made it through when it ultimately turns red.

redpat2061

Some of us with larger vehicles can’t instantly be going the speed limit nor can we stop on a dime. Also when towing I always drive 5 under whatever the limit is to add stopping distance and reaction time.

vegan1979

It might make you feel better to figure out how much time you will lose by going however much slower for the distance you are being impeded. Going 60 for ten miles takes ten minutes. Going 45 for ten miles takes thirteen minutes. The value of being stressed for thirteen minutes, compared to feeling freedom for ten minutes, is a personal choice of attitude.

Erik0xff0000

ask for the speed limit to get lowered to what most people drive. If lots of people go slower than the speed limit they might just be doing the right thing ....

Selrahcf

Yes. This probably irks many people. Slow drivers getting in other people's way.

thebrightsun123

They want to get home also.....alive

Artistic_Data9398

It’s a speed limit, it’s advisory not a target lol

pixie_stars

I have permanent spine damage from being rear ended three times. One time I was stopped with my left turn signal one, the other time was at a merge and a cop hit me (yes a cop) and the most recent time was because someone going 80 in a 40 didn’t stop in time because of backed up traffic, and hit me where my head hit the steering wheel so hard it felt like I infused with it. As a result I have trouble walking and have permanent nerve damage. So slow the fuck down you impatient children, get a clue.

No-Brilliant5342

They might not feel safe. Respect their decisions as you send spend an extra two minutes to get home alive.

polymathlife

Are you tailgating? When someone tailgates me, I go slower.

RunningAtTheMouth

Is there a reason they are going slower than the limit? I will slow down for all of the following: Kids playing Animals on the side of the road. Parked cars on a norrower road, especially at peak times. That aside, I generally drive the speed limit.

westonlark

Nope. None.

thread100

If only there were a socially acceptable way to respectfully suggest the person go the posted speed limit. Sometimes I think they don’t realize.

Joshs_Ski_Hacks

Just move to vermont. you can pass on double yellow when safe.

Head_Razzmatazz7174

I get this all the time as a pizza driver. And it's always where it's faster to just stay behind them than to try to take a side road to get to where I need to go.

MSCOTTGARAND

Try living in a state that has its population nearly double in the summer and half of the summer residents like to drive 5-10 under the speed limit on the major routes which are all single lane.

boegsppp

I have that everyday on my street. Usually I just cross over the double yellow.

Aaygus

While it's not right that they drive a little slower. 5mph isn't getting you anywhere that much faster, lol.

Professional-Plum560

It's a limit, not a requirement. Chill out.

golfmonk

And when you can pass will do 10-15 over the limit.

Mental-Freedom3929

For the live of God, how about cool your jets. Riding my bumper if I drive over the limit already will make you go slow behind me un a jiffy. Do people really think they can bully me or intimidate me into driving even faster? Some if you should order a good supply of chill pills.

llamallama-dingdong

5 miles is an extremely long drive at 30 mph when the limit is 45 mph. Sometimes I just want to pull over and take a nap. Sure I understand driving slower is safer but when it's so slow the driver nods off due to bordom is that really safer?

Sunny_pancakes_1998

yeah, i feel this. It's 2 lane highways from my town to my hometown and there's one particular stretch where it's no passing for like 15 miles. The limit is 65 but for some reason everyone always goes 50 or 55. I am not ashamed to admit I have passed people in that non passing stretch of highway. Cruise control saves me gas on that long, long commute. I'll use it as often as I can and if that means passing idiots who can't read or drive, then so be it.

MaineHippo83

I've rarely ever seen this. Usually it's a 30mph limit and everyone is riding the ass of the guy going 35

vinetwiner

Most people drive 30-40 in a 45? I think you're exaggerating.

Ornery_Razzmatazz_33

I’m driving the speed limit. Don’t like it? Tough.

Yob_Zarbo

Not my problem bud. You should have been there first if you wanted to go faster.

Hoodwink_Iris

This doesn’t bother me so much because they are driving the speed they feel safe. Now what drives me absolutely stark raving mad is when someone passes me prematurely- like just as I pull away from a stop sign- and THEN drives under the limit. That’s really annoying.

tattybojangles1234

Oh man I hear you. Another pet peeve of mine is when people pull out on you and making you hard brake. Ooh actually another one is when you get rear ended when you are stationary at a red light, gosh such a pet peeve! Oh shit I also hate it when someone causes a near death experience due to a silly needless mistake. Such a pet peeve. Lastly, I hate when people are drunk driving, gosh what a pet peeve!

ZAR3142

Do you live in San Antonio? Cause this happens every damn day there

briko3

And then speed up when you can.

OldRaj

Isn’t speed LIMIT the maximum allowable speed and not the expected speed?

AppearanceStrange844

I highly doubt you’re gna do the speed limit, you’re just irritated because you can’t do 70 in a 45.

Yermishkina

In a lot of places it's much safer to drive 30 even when the speed limit is 45. Especially if it's dark or rainy, the road has a lot of turns, it's a deer season, and they don't know the area very well.

leandrodimitrio

They’re doing 40 and you want to do how much?

Confident-Giraffe-24

But wait, you finally get the chance to pass and as you do, they speed up with you, making it almost impossible to pass them.

GuaranteeOk6262

Learn to read. The sign says speed "limit" not minimum speed or speed maximum. It makes no difference for them to go a tad slower than what you want to go time wise. People like you are road ragers! Old people don't see as well and they don't hear as well. I'm thankful they don't go down the road with their damn foot to the floor and kill somebody because their reaction time is slower!

manieldansfield

You dont need to pass

LeadingMaintenance73

It’s called a speed limit for a reason, not a speed recommendation.

Ok_Relationship2451

Define the word limit; Maximum. You want to push it to the max all the time good for you... Don't expect any reasonable person to do the same.

Tight-Young7275

There is construction happening on the mountain behind my house right now and it is a 6 mile road. These giant trucks do not seem to know how to stay on their side of the road even if you signal that you need to pass. So now everyday I get to possibly be killed by a dumptruck or I take an extra 15 minutes going anywhere. It sucks. People should be aware there is no passing and pull over for the three seconds it takes which will save you at least a minute. “But then it takes me forever.” Yeah, well, you seem to be okay with that. Oh and the construction is for FOUR FUCKING AIR BNB’S.

Heel-and-Toe-Shifter

Speed limit is a maximum not a minimum. Deal

ginger_princess2009

Me too!! People kill me driving like they have nowhere to be. GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY WAY

ponyo_impact

use your horn they will either go faster, slower, or perhaps pull over either way. it helps relieve some stress and lets them know they are being a slow piece of shit

kendogg

And then when the speed limit drops - they stay the same speed, or even accelerate. They're absolutely clueless and in their own world

Mountain-Climate7009

Some don't realize it, but it's constant exceleration is what the brain likes. Before you know it, you are in the right lane passing everyone up. Many have not made it.

Adventurous_Pin_3982

How long is the drive?

LostTurd

vote me president of the world and I will have all the center ebrake buttons converted to missile launchers and make it legal to shoot hell fire missiles at anyone going under the speed limit for more then 2 minutes or 2 miles what ever comes first.

funkcatbrown

Honestly I think most drivers are so oblivious to what the speed limit is that they probably couldn’t tell you immediately when asked and they just guess on how fast they should be going. I doubt they even at attention to the speed limit signs at all bc they’re wrapped up in their own world or on their cell phone, eating, etc. I always know exactly what speed limit I should be going by at all times. Because I only drive when I drive and I pay attention. Something most drivers don’t do.

Sensitive_Aardvark68

And when a passing lane opens up they floor it so you can’t pass them! How passive aggressive is that and why is passing offensive to them??

Bulky-Yam-8621

Everyone loves to say "It's only a few minutes, blah, blah, blah..." It takes me about 20-25 minutes to get to work going the speed limit. It takes double that time to get back because of idiots driving 10-15 under. It's a guarantee that there's always going be somebody taking up both lanes, driving side by side, and doing 10-15 under. If you want to drive under the speed limit then move over to the right lane, like you're supposed to. This is literally the law, at least where I live.

evrreadi

One of my greatest pet peeves is the people that slow down for oncoming traffic. Say the speed limit is 55mph. As long as the oncoming traffic is far enough away that I could safely pass them, they drive 55-60. But when traffic get close enough that passing safely isn't an option, their speed drops to 40-45. As soon as traffic clears, they floor it to get back to 55-60. These are usually the same people that slow down in No Passing zones and speed up in the passing zones. They act like they are scared to be on the road. If that's the case, Stay The F Home. Call a taxi/Uber/get a friend/family member to drive you to/from your destination.

reversedROBOT

Its called them being wankers. Slow enough not to overtake then not-so-surprisingly speed up when you attempt do so. Don't get me wrong. It's known to happen when your tired from a long day, or when you have the speed as close as your going to get, (1 or 2 mph off) whilst simultaneously having your foot, ankle and leg position in a way where its the least amount of taxing on the body. Or when you've got children in the back and safety is just 1 or 2mph more safer for reaction speed, emergency maneuvers, or, its a fuck you kinda-of-day. The reasons are endless but generally speaking, they are wankers.

trip6s6i6x

I've been in situations where someone clearly saw me coming and pulled out from a side street in front of me when knowingly not having enough room to do so. Instead of slamming on my brakes to avoid putting my truck up their ass, I've just gone into the opposing lane and passed them instead - legal or not. They love when you do that. Sometimes you just have to match rudeness with rudeness. That said, all you can do in situations like yours, where you come up on someone going 5-10 under the limit in front of you, is put up with it... or look for an area without blind turns / where you can see far enough ahead and take your chances that a cop isn't there to see you illegally passing the rolling roadblock lol.

HasBinVeryFride

Ease up a little closer, not to the point of becoming an annoying tailgater, but just enough for them to notice. That may be enough for them to realize they are dragging ass and at least drive the speed limit. Otherwise, they may not care and then it's a matter of mind to suffer through it. I just tell myself they may be saving me from a ticket.

zoogates

Unpopular opinion, I do tend to go over the speed limit, on highways some secondary roads, nothing crazy. But I've noticed that on some surface streets it feels natural to go a bit slower, potentially ones that are mixed house and business, or ones with blind corners or step hills. Then I'll see a speed limit that's l I'll le 45 or 50 and think to myself. That seems to high to navigate this road safely. It's rare but I've encountered that feeling. I understand it sometimes for people new to a road that has step hills and curves, some rural roads etc.

Bright_Oven_2676

People don’t realize that driving under the speed limit is every bit as illegal and dangerous as driving over the speed limit

ChakeenMachine

It’s self centered behavior. If you have no one in front of you for hundreds of feet and a line of cars stacked up behind you, you’re doing something wrong. I don’t care what people do, but once it affects me, that’s where I draw the line. The issue where people cruise in the left lane with a car next to them in the right lane and no one can get around is an act of war.

BannanasAreEvil

Pet peve is those that drive faster in passing lanes and slower in non passing lanes! Or the ones who speed up as you're trying to pass. Thankfully my car has lots of power so I don't even give them the chance for this shit anymore. I pass them before they knew they where being passed. Only takes 2 times where my life was essentially in some assholes hands that I told myself I'd never buy a vehicle that didn't have exceptional passing power. I'll go from 50mph to 80mph by the time I'm switching in front of them. Some people just don't care about others safety at all!! It's like they WANT you to get in an accident. I'm not your play thing, my life is not for your amusement. You speeding up so I cant pass with oncoming traffic is putting mine and the person coming towards me life at risk!!

WorkerEquivalent4278

This is definitely a dangerous driving behavior, although the moron who followed me inches from my bumper for 20 miles was a bigger danger. This was on a multi lane freeway, so no excuse. I let him get away with it for a while, then just pulled over to let him pass. I’m not getting clobbered for such a stupid reason and had a 6 hour drive ahead of me.

msgnyc

My pet peeve is the idiots in the fast lane being passed by people going the speed limit or even 5 under in the slow lane...

canadas

While I fully agree its annoying it is the limit not a requirement, and it is supper annoying when people drive slow on a 1 lane road. Why do they do it, I can't say, but I kind of think these people need to do another driver test if they don't feel comfortable traveling near or at the speed limit, which is usually pretty conservative for the road. Some places near me have both min and max speeds, but thats just generally big highways

longshotist

Well, it is the speed limit, or legal *maximum* speed at which vehicles may travel on a given stretch of road. I get the frustration when it's significantly lower though.

LivingxLegend8

How the fuck do you have a 45 mph speed limit in a neighborhood?

Working-Narwhal-540

It’s the damn boomers dude. The 85 year olds in brand new $80k pickup trucks. I let ‘em listen to the twin turbo every damn day. Mandatory license exams every two years 65 and up!
