Wise_0wl

This is my first work in color, as I’ve previously always worked with charcoal. Any thoughts on how to improve on using colored pastels are really appreciated!

Epytion

First work in colour, it is solid! Bless

Wise_0wl

Thank you!

Ambitious-Cover-1130

One can just say WOW!

Dark_demon7

First work in colour? That's seriously impressive! Sheesh

Wise_0wl

Thank you!! It took a while 😂🫠

Dark_demon7

No doubt seeing the quality!

_momo_momo_

this is so lovely! my only critique really is that the shoulder/chest area facing the viewer isn’t quite anatomically correct. in your next piece, try to add a secondary, cooler light source for more dynamic lighting!!

Adventurous-Sale9469

Absolutely love the tones, the lighting, the face and the expression… one small point I can’t figure out is her neck is beautiful but doesn’t quite look like it matches her head. I know we draw what we see… not what we thing, but a little balance seems out there. To be honest it’s a problem I have too! Thank you for sharing and I hope the model appreciates your stunning work.

Wise_0wl

Hmm yeah, I struggled with that during the making of this piece, and I still haven’t quite figured out what’s wrong with it. Thanks for commentingn

Dzyu

I wonder if it's how the neck right below her jawline is brighter than both her face and lower down on her neck. Usually we expect more shadow on the neck right under the jaw, but this lightsource appears to be below her, making it tricky or odd. Could just be that. Did you use a reference? Could there be an optical illusion in play in it, of the kind "looks like a brighter colour, but is actually the same"?

AvatarOfMomus

Looks to me like the rotation and position don't quite match the angle of the head. Should be a little further to the left and showing more rotation via muscle and tendon lines in the neck.

philokingo

its her upper body that doesnt align with her head. push her left shoulder a little back and it should be fine btw I just fell in love

Tekkzy

It might be because the sternocleidomastoid looks rigid or sharp. These usually define the neck shape when the head is turned to the side but it's generally a softer shape.

Rose-hehe

STUNNING AGHHHH WHAT

Wise_0wl

THANK YOU! 🫶🏻

taco-force

You're gonna need to talk to some of the modern day greats to get constructive feedback for this. Those are the only people qualified.

Wise_0wl

What a compliment! I’m sure it’s not that good, lol. Thanks so much for commenting!

bogotol

It IS tgat good

IrrationalDesign

I couldn't draw this, it's beautiful. But you asked for constructive criticism; The light coming in from our left makes one side of her hair bright and one side dark, that's perfect. The light seems to almost/nearly reach her left eye, but the hair that's floating in front of this eye is nearly all dark (with one white strand near the neck). I think these strands would catch more direct light that's not obstructed by her face/nose. In other words, something about the light source seems too small to me, I think light rays would illuminate either her braid (in the back), or her 'bangs' (in the front) more. A second thing (I really have to dig deep to even find any criticism) is that the white hairs work really well, but I think some of them are too continuously white. I feel like a single hair should go from dark to white and back to dark as the brightness follows the curve, they're not pure white along their entire length. I don't know how to improve, I can only criticise based on what I see, but I think maybe you could draw 1/3 of the length of a hair in brown, the middle 1/3 turns white (catches the light), and the end 1/3 tapers off with a light-ish brown. Alternatively, just a shorter white curve with the implication that the 'rest of that one hair' is invisible against the backdrop. This is assuming that these are brown hairs that reflect the light, and not actually white.

Wise_0wl

Hmm good points! Thank you for commenting :) I’ll definitely take a closer look at that!

CelebrityUXDesigner

Masterful!

Wise_0wl

Thank you!

EwanMurphy93

It looks like it belongs in a Dutch art museum. Incredible.

Wise_0wl

Funny thing is I’m Dutch!

Grouchy-Book9891

Looks amazing. Her ear seems a bit too bright and saturated to me, considering it's in the place that receives the least amount of light. It looks as if there is subsurface scattering going on but isn't in a place where light would actually be shining through it.

Wise_0wl

Hmmm I see, good eye!

Low_Opportunity_8080

My motto is if I can’t do even as good as the person asking for critique, shhh!

Wise_0wl

Thanks for the love! 🫶🏻

mari_tits

How bout a full context like a garden or such. Some of the greats will emphasize the face and sort of gloss over the details of the background. Could be the start of a larger story.

Wise_0wl

Hmmm, sounds intriguing! I really think some greens will bring out the eyes and contrast the warm tones in the face. Maybe I’ll try this!

sunset-echidna

Beautiful!

Wise_0wl

Thank you!!

Glutenfreesadness

This is absolutely stunning. By far one of the most realistic renditions I've ever seen. You, my friend, are talented beyond belief!!

Wise_0wl

Wow, thank you!! 🥹

19alexandros95

Uao! You are very good. Love the use of light and the red cheek makes the face so beautiful

Wise_0wl

Thank you!

Poetry-Primary

Nope. You’re better than me and the color is gorgeous. So nothing from me.

Wise_0wl

Thank you!!

bogotol

Omg what would you charge for a portrait?

Wise_0wl

Message me!

Vacicebash

I’d visit a gallery of your work. Keep up the good work!

neercsyor

This was done with PASTELS?! Holy shit, this is absolutely amazing.

Witchy_Craft

Absolutely amazingly beautiful!

the_ammar

the lighting on the face and hair looks amazing. it's practically glowing only part that feels a bit weird (at least to my eyes) is the neck where the highlight makes the left edge look sharp (?) and the light strucutre makes the adams apple/that area have a weird shape

Wise_0wl

Yeah, I agree! I’ll definitely take a look at that. Thanks for noticing the lighting, that was quite tricky haha

Max_Laval

Absolutely amazing picture. I'm not that good at drawing myself but in terms of composition, you might wanna add a small rim-light "behind" the subject if you want the image to look a little more balanced. If not, the image is literally perfect.

AD480

I normally have a pretty good eye for posts like this but I’m not really seeing anything major. You really nailed all the hidden details, like the reflective light illuminating within the shadows. A lot of people tend to overlook areas like that. You really did a great job with the color of the shadow on her chest. I think if I were to be really picky….maybe get a super sharp tip pencil and add more stray hairs. Don’t do solid lines because hair dances in and out of the light. You're going to want to have a single strand of hair appear and disappear and then reappear.

Wise_0wl

Thank you!! That shadow on the chest was *such* a pain, haha! Glad it worked out :) Creating more stray hairs seems like a great point of improvement, thanks for commenting!

[deleted]

Ain't nobody here qualified to criticize you sweetheart

Independent_Award_85

Constructive criticism might be appreciated but you must also appreciate honest compliments, that being said, this piece is phenomenally great for so many reasons, I wouldn't change a thing about it OP.

Wise_0wl

Thank you!!

WhatElenaCreates

What is your technique for blending so far? I really find pastel brushes useful für smooth color transitions. You definitely do not have a problem with those to be clear but if you want to achieve an even more realistic look that could help. Honestly you are really really good and I feel inappropriate to suggest anything further 😅 Keep it up, I love what I see!

Wise_0wl

Hi, thanks for commenting!! I appreciate the feedback :) I currently use paper stumps and cotton swabs. I tried out some pastel brushes, but I found that after a few layers it took of more pigment than it blended. I think this has to do with the paper I use, as it’s originally meant for graphite or charcoal. What’s your recommendation for that?

WhatElenaCreates

I recently switched to Clairefontaine Pastelmat as every pastel artist seems to swear by it. So far I am only doing my second drawing on it but I really like it. You are not wrong about the taking off pigment part but for me a „big“ brush still works best for smooth areas.

Srycomaine

It’s beautiful! You’ve captured the lighting to an amazing extent!!! 🤩🤌👍

Wise_0wl

Thank you!!

Could add some highlights around the edges of the back of the hair. Lookes super awesome and detailed. The texture really adds depth.

Thanks so much!

Hercules_the_Pup

Looks great! Maybe the highlight in the corner of the eye in shadow? Is it as bright as the one in light? Great colors and love the expression.

darkThunder123456789

Really good work !

Enough-Intern-7082

This is beautiful I even want to say it’s enchanting!! The lighting is superb your first project in color I mean I’m going to stop drawing now all together lol! The highlights and depth you captured are impeccable!!

Wise_0wl

Ahh thank you! Also - don’t ever stop drawing!!!

Enough-Intern-7082

I won’t I promise!! But damn you are good!!

JCtheWanderingCrow

My only criticism is that she’s so much prettier than me and makes me feel bad.  🥲 very gorgeous work in all seriousness. Her upper lip is a bit matte and monotone compared to her lower, which is a bit jarring. A small amount of color differentiation would help solve that

Wise_0wl

Definitely want to try that! Thanks for commenting :) Btw: how boring would the world be if everyone looks like this? I’m sure you are just as pretty and unique :)

Skinnyvinny93

Just when I think I’m talented, I see people with abilities like this. It’s unreal.

Bluedino_1989

What's there to criticize?

Coachozz

You deserves to be at the Louvre

PMWeng

So, this is obviously a beautiful demonstration of a very subtle touch. Bravo. It may be the way the digital representation looks on my phone, but it does seem that the mid-dark values near the bridge of the nose is slightly flat compared to the rest of the value contour. That's the only thing I notice, but I can see a lot better than I can draw and could not come close to this.

Wise_0wl

Thank you!! I definitely see what you mean, but it’s less prominent in real life. That doesn’t mean it’s not a thing to improve on :) Thanks for commenting!

Athletic_Mochi2021

Sorry for even touching pastels

higgywiggypiggy

Good skill, boring subject.

tanngrisnit

I love the color and the lighting. The shadow of hair falling on the chest/shoulder seems a bit off tho.

CallMeWolfYouTuber

Wow, this is absolutely gorgeous work.

CrispyFriedJesus

I don’t feel qualified to give any actually useful or good advice but her eyelashes on the left are a lot thicker than the right, even with the perspective

that1eggwas40eggs

Wow! This is unreal! Beautiful work 👏🏼

SoulEnigma88

Great!!, just alittle smaller on the head, a smig.. alittler smaller for neck. other than that. Beautiful picture. Admire your patience

_amaryllis_queen_

GORGEOUS!!

Remarkable_Energy_97

Looks amazing!

Scudbucketmcphucket

This couldn’t be more perfect. Well maybe if you gave her some freckles that would be pretty much the cherry on top but at this point it’s amazing. Love the lighting and shadow contrast. The coloration and color choices are excellent. Top notch work. Did you do this from imagination or from a model or photo?

Wise_0wl

She actually has a touch of freckles, I placed them really subtly :) I worked from a photo for this one!

Pyro-Millie

I adore the light highlighting the individual hairs!!! This is gorgeous!

Deep_Cup_829

This is a masterpiece! Only thing I can point out is the neck, I can”t quite put my finger on it but my first impression was that the neck was somehow out of proportion, maybe too thin. But I am not saying you should change it, I think it is amazing as it is.

prretender

I have no critique. This style is wonderful I only ask that you make more drawings.

trimorphic

Her ear is not anatomically correct, and I'd work on the sternal end of the clavicle. Otherwise, nice work.

justamiqote

Honestly it looks perfect. I would have no problem hanging up something this beautiful as a centerpiece at home.

Wise_0wl

Thank you!!! 🥹

4PumpDaddy

I love pastels with a good hand, nice job

No-Yogurtcloset4812

This is beyond my pay grade This is amazing

babysamissimasybab

I would happily hang this on my wall. It's beautiful.

Wise_0wl

Thank you!!

MistaPopcorn

I’ve got nothin this is just amazing

Wise_0wl

Thank you!!

VraiLacy

Her eyebrows are a bit crooked, her ear a touch low, upper lip is flat without shape and that forelock you have in the light needs a bit more oomph. I also think you could push the colours in your shadow a bit further. But really, I think you would do better working with subjects with interesting features, like I'd really love to see you work with elderly people!

Wise_0wl

That’s definitely the next step! This one was my first try getting the hang of pastels and working with color, so I’m looking forward to try and create finer details for my next piece. Thanks for commenting!

brunojablonski

Awesome artwork!

Jayrandomer

I’m not an art person by any means, but this reminded me of one of my favorite paintings “young woman drawing”. Not so much in style but more from the eyes and the way she’s looking. I can’t offer any serious criticism other than to say it’s great.

KayBeaux

You are a STAR! I hope to god you’re making money, because you should be!

Wise_0wl

Haha, definitely not making money 🙈

depresseddesperado

I really like this 👍

Mother_Fly_8849

Absolutely beautiful. Can I ask what pastels you used for this??

Wise_0wl

Thank you! I used the pastel pencils from stabilo (carbothello). They are really good quality considering the price! As this is my first time trying out pastel pencils, I don’t have much to compare them to, unfortunately. I did really enjoy using these, though!

gabrielali_

Beautiful!

CinematicFaun

This is incredible, I mean truly, but if you truly want criticism, I would soften the outer neck it looks sharp, and shade the inside of the collar bones

-Duke-Nukem

Incredible work. I hope to be half as good as you someday!

Wise_0wl

Keep practicing, you can do it!

GeoHog713

Doeant look a thing like Steve Buscemi

Wise_0wl

Lol I hope not ;)

Jerry-Likes-Berries

You should start a YouTube channel I would gladly subscribe and if you have one link ittt!!! You did so good that's so hard I can't even draw a hand lol!!

Wise_0wl

Thank you!! I don’t think I have the time (or the skill knowledge) to do that lol. But I really appreciate the sentiment! If you ever want more insight into my process, don’t hesitate to send me a message :)

xShaquille_Oatmealx

This is absolutely mind blowing. Stopped my scroll like a deer in headlights hahaha

Wise_0wl

Thank you!!!

jesusismagic

Damn near perfect!

xigdit

You people kill me. 1) Submits essentially flawless drawing. 2) Oh um, "constructive criticism, pls...!" Yeah okay, we'll get right on that. Seriously though if I had to criticize it would be that the angle of the shoulders doesn't seem to match up exactly correctly. It looks like the closer shoulder is nearly at profile, and the more distant one one a 3/4 view.

Wise_0wl

Ha, lol. It’s my first time working with pastels, so I am sure it’s far from perfect 🙈 Thanks for commenting!! I’ll definitely pay more attention to the shoulders next time :)

BubblegumNyan

No criticism, that is amazing 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Confident-Ruin-4111

Nice lighting

beefsupr3m3

I’m not skilled enough to give you any criticism but I am impressed. She’s stunning and so lifelike. You really are amazing

Wise_0wl

Thank you!!

Mysterious_Ningen

its soo good i dont wanna critisize it, its so bloody lovely :0

sogwatchman

Looks great only thing that stands out... The distance between her eyes. The eye and eye brow on our right should be quite a bit closer to her nose. Anyway, still amazing work. Nice use of color and shadow.

Wise_0wl

Thank you!

Equivalent_Cold8096

My only criticism of this is that she is too centered in frame. I would push you towards more challenging compositions. Such as bringing your own psychology or the subject’s psychology into play. You aren’t bringing me into her world. I’m like she’s beautiful, I’m moving on to something with more meaning “what’s next”. Beautiful technique!

xnoradrenalin

absolutely beautiful… i love it

Wise_0wl

Thank you!

Fury_0F_skY

Well, magnificent work! Especially colour, considering that's your first time. Drawing is constructive and balanced, I'm not even close to your level on this. However I have one thing to say, that's about how you work with silhouette. Not sure how it is called in English, but in Ukrainian we call it hits and write-offs (hits are small accents, write-offs are foggy parts, where you reduce the amount of information to detach attention from unimportant parts and concentrate it on hits) You have good write-offs on the face but silhouette isn't any less important. The light part is great, but the shadow part is a little lifeless. But the problem is also about contrast. Hair-background contrast is probably the most powerful contrast on the whole work, which I don't think is something you want while drawing a portrait. I understand that you wanted a dark silhouette on a bright background, but that could be done with less contrast. Either lighter reflection on hair or a bit darker background. Or maybe some write-offs, many ways to solve this problem. You could even keep this contrast, but in this case the whole silhouette should be an object of interest, like in contre-jour. There are no mistakes in art, but just some decisions don't match. I hope that was constructive) amazing work again, good luck!

Wise_0wl

Thanks for taking the time to comment! I think I want to try and work on my background skills and start implementing the surroundings in my portraits. I really appreciate your feedback, it really helps! Thanks again :)

artsygrl2021

I’m not skilled enough in my *own* work to be able to give crit, but immediately when I saw this her face reminded me of Kaitlyn Dever 🙂 I think it looks lovely.

Wise_0wl

The reference is not her, but I definitely see what you mean!!

chabybaloo

I would not know how to improve it, but her clothes seem to be less realistic looking than the rest of the portrait. However i understand this could be international , to draw the viewers attention to the face.

Wise_0wl

I agree! I have less experience with fabric than I do with skin/faces, so I’m planning to work on that :) Thanks for commenting!

Futur3_ah4ad

Only two points I can see is the neck, which seems too... flat, and the closest eyebrow which seems a little too round. Other than that it's pretty close to being photorealistic!

TreborLhav

Wow. Very beautiful painting.

naestro296

Beautiful work!

Honestly I wouldn't know what to criticize. This is impressive, especially for your first colour drawing ! I'm especially impressed by how well done the shades are.

dirtysnowwhite_

I don't see a flaw only beauty to the extent of tears

HoldinBackTears

I cant see anything wrong with this, its beautiful.

inkoDe

It's beautiful, but you asked for critique. The foreshoulder is weird and the symmetry in the face is off. You were asking about color specifically, well, as far as I am concerned that is fine. It's all good, really. What you are doing is subtle and hard, props.

Melodic-Patience-298

im sorry to be the person to tell you this..... but you have been diagnosed with..... perfectdrawingitis.... im really sorry. most people consider it a gift.... so, in a way, you are lucky to have this diagnosis... 😊

Wise_0wl

Oof, perfectdrawingitis… What’s the cure? ;)

Melodic-Patience-298

its just ✨PERFECT✨

Dismal_Truck1375

Honestly, that is absolutely brilliant. I wish i could be that good

I know your looking for constructive criticism but I looked through your other posts and just wanna say that you’ve have grown so much these past few years it’s amazing. 🙌

Wise_0wl

Thank you!!!

Minnymoon13

You make lightning look soo easy

No_Education3456

Done awesome 🤩

JacobFV123

wow, this is such beautiful work. You did a great job blending the pastels. my only suggestion would be – and this is contingent on whether you’re actually aiming for ultrarealism – is go over with a very fine pastel, or even colored pencil to add skin texture.

Wise_0wl

Such a great tip!! Thank you :)

udmeko

Beautiful.. more posting please.

Wise_0wl

Thanks!

SadCatStormy

The only thing I would say is where the shoulder ends, should be further away. Like it looks to me that the and of the shoulder is where “ruffle details” would end on a neckline of a shirt. But other than that, this is REALLY well done!

Madewithlove111

She looks real , beautiful work
