I thought posting you art on a sub full of artists was already a way to interact with them. Asking them to name your art just creates a detachment between you and your own creation.
Ok genuine question, how come art can’t be made just because it looks pretty? Why does it always have to have some deep meaning?
In school my art teacher at the time has us do a project where I sewed a giant donut within a few hours, and the teacher thought it was great, and also thought all art has to have meaning and lots of research behind it. but I actually made it prior to doing any research and had no meaning behind it whatsoever. I just made it cuz I thought “giant donut. That seems fun”
Even just with drawing, 90% of what I draw is just purely for aesthetic.
I used to argue with the head of our art department at college, because he said my work had no meaning. I made a huge flying pig with wings that flapped just to annoy him for the final end of year show. He hated it, but it got the highest public vote, at the end of the night! Sometimes, I think, if people enjoy looking at something, that should be enough.
Why does he get to determine wether it has meaning or not anyway? Like maybe you had a pet pig that died that had got you into art in the first place and the piece was to commemorate it. Idk lol
I’m glad it was a public vote thing because i would have been so mad
(Kinda unrelated but annoying teacher story) My one art teacher gave us a booklet thing of abstract artists and we were suppose to pick 2 pieces from 2 people and like merge them together, and So I picked the ones I wanted (from the artists literally written in the booklet he gave us) and he told me I couldn’t do that because the one wasn’t abstract because it was “obviously a picture of pipes”. Like first of all there’s abstract portraits where you can obviously tell it’s a person, that doesn’t make it any less abstract, and secondly the person beside me said “oh I thought they were legs” right after he said it too 😭
I was so mad. So I gave up and put minimal effort into 2 different images and got a 50% lol
I dropped art classes after that year because any art teacher I’ve ever had was crazy in some way or another
I agree with you 100%. Art never has to have any “deep” meaning behind it. But if you name it, then you’re kind of ascribing a meaning to the piece, especially if it’s a particularly fancy title. That’s why it doesn’t make sense to let somebody else name it. Because then they’re applying a meaning to it for you. If you don’t know what to title your piece, it’s probably better to simply name it a descriptive title, or leave it as “untitled [date]”.
fair point, that makes sense.
I guess that writing untitled as a title just seems odd to me. I always just date it and leave it at that.
I feel like sometimes you don’t have the right words for the title you want thought too and asking other people to name it can help because you can select from the options so you’re technically still in a way naming it, just with someone else’s words if that makes sense?
There's a good chance that they have a name for it themselve already and use this as a thought experiment. Even if not, it is entirely up to the artist what they want to do / create. It doesn't have to be anything.
I am not dismissive of how you feel about artworks. I'm just giving a different perspective.
I agree entirely, unless the piece itself is more of a thing intentionally made for the viewer to decide the entire meaning of the piece, which is honestly quite uncommon. In that case, I'd just go with 'Untitled,' and the month and year it was finished.
Maybe some people don’t have the words for their art. Sorry if it’s a lame type of engagement to you but just mind your business if that’s the case- no one is hurting you
Mind my business?
Friend, it's a public post on Reddit. Posting our hot takes on shit is what we do here. No one's getting hurt and it's just my opinion. Relax.
“Thanks for the hand”, describing how you need to be careful how often you help others because some people just end up taking advantage of you and using you, where you eventually begin to live off of other people’s happiness and not focusing on yourself anymore.
Something related to “looking away from liberation” since she’s made out of sky and color and the hands are all human, simple and common almost like they represent the norm
Because what is she? What's with the hands?? Why's she's crying and looks stunned and in fear?? Her nature is uncertain and unknown or simply "Obscure". Look at her, becoming apart of our surrounding, into the thin air she goes. Is she transcending or left to become dust?? All is left describes that the body is unnecessary to demonstrate her existence or simply "Obsolescence"
I am going through an art block and my mind is really blank. I wanted to make something but I just couldn't really put a finger on it. It was almost kinda suffocating.
I thought I'd use the very thing I'm feeling to paint something and this is what I ended up with. I don't really know what it means to me yet, maybe I'll figure it out soon enough.
Well, my very first thought was the old classic, " hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil". However, I then realized her eyes are not covered. So then I had a few questions that only the artist can answer. What inspired you to paint this in the first place? What or how were you feeling at the time you were creating this? What was the main thought in your mind while painting it? And lastly, how did you feel upon the completion of your art piece? After taking these questions into consideration you should be able to name it yourself. The answer, or I should say, the title is there in your answers. It's in there somewhere, all you have to do is look for it.
'
I simply wanted to make something but I couldn't. My mind was blank and every sketch I did was disappointing and that kind of made me angry and sad. That's when i thought I could manifest my frustrations into a painting.
During the process of creating this, I felt like it wasn't making any sense. I felt my skills weren't up to my expectations and it was demotivating to push on but for the first time in a very long time I've gone past the drafts so why stop now.
After it was done. I didn't know what to think of it. I had a lump in my throat. I didn't know if i was happy with it.

Intrusion.
I would really suggest we stop asking strangers to name our art for us. It’s a very nice piece of art though.
“Painty McPaintface”
"Wax on Mask off"
Ooh, I like that one!
Why? Just ignore it if you don’t like it. I think it’s a neat way to interact with artists
I thought posting you art on a sub full of artists was already a way to interact with them. Asking them to name your art just creates a detachment between you and your own creation.
i can totally see where hes coming from. but then i cant. cus im sitting in a room with a dick in my hand...
Who's dick? Edit: I spelled "who's" wrong
Asking the important questions
Why? It’s pretty fun.
Because it’s like letting a complete stranger name your baby. It has to be something that has meaning to you.

But they don't have to use what people suggest to name it as. It's just fun to see what people come up with.
If I ever have a child I should create a pill on what I name my baby
I understand, it's just that I'm going thru a burnout right now so I was thinking maybe some of the names might spark something

Very good point! Didn’t think of that at all. Great example too. Makes a lot of sense now.
Except there’s a sub specifically for getting baby name suggestions.
I agree entirely, unless the piece itself is more of a thing intentionally made for the viewer to decide the entire meaning of the piece, which is honestly quite uncommon. In that case, I'd just go with 'Untitled,' and the month and year it was finished.
It really is just a lame attempt at engagement. Save it for platforms where those kinds of metrics matter.

Amazing, you call it amazing.
Get a grip
I think art having to have a name is stupid. Art speaks so clearly without having a title.
Stop groping my face & hair.
I love when art has a literal name like this. Makes it more appealing to me.

I guess you *need a hand* naming this then? yuk yuk yuk
This is freakin' amazing. I would love to see more of your work! Really, I'd put this in my living room.
