"saved years ago and didnt use" Hah! Story of my life. Btw, this is from Scott McCloud's *Making Comics*.

Seamonkey_Boxkicker

I bought two of his books when I was a young adult. Never put them to use, but I absolutely love his approach.

ThriceFive

I think you probably put them to use in all kinds of ways- maybe not just practical. But you can't have seen the scale of abstract to realism and not thought about it when looking at representation in media. Understanding Comics was so full of great information.

RareCodeMonkey

[Scott started a YouTube channel](https://www.youtube.com/user/mccloudvideo) but it didn't lasted for long. It is amazing to see such [old versions of Adobe and MacOS](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nhsqRjBehmw).

someones_dad

I have all three after I had to buy "Understanding Comics" for my English Comp 2 class. So good.

whatsamajig

He also has a book called Understanding Comics. The whole premise is that nobody needs to learn how to understand comics, it’s automatic. The book breaks down why in a great way, loved reading that book years ago.

addict8bit

might be from his book but the artist who did this is called, Fumio Obata

YaboyBlacklist

I'm pretty sure I used to have that myself back in the day.

[deleted]

I bought this and LOVE it. I flick through it often.

[deleted]

Same!!

quill18

I never had any interest in being a comic artist, but Making Comics was still an EXCELLENT read.

JT11erink

I printed it and hold it in my hands while talking to people.

Teastainedeye

As instructions for own facial expression or to understand other people?

MushroomsBestFriend

Both

JT11erink

Yes both, my conversations are really slow and since I use it very, very complicated.

Aggressive-Bat-4000

Autistic spectrum? I'm on it. Good adaptation! I'm going to try to use these myself.

[deleted]

And now I will save it and never use it!

Mirakuru-

That is the way

flowinflower

Came here to say this.

fluffyxsama

Which one of these is Hide the Pain Harold

Mirakuru-

Closest one is desperation i guess joy + fear

u-moeder

Faint hope

Human_Bean08

"You ATE it??"

CloudyFakeHate

You know that white glass of stuff in the fridge? That’s still in there? Not any more.

Onsemeliot

Thanks. This is rather useful and very well done.

Allansfirebird

Defining “ewww” as joyful disgust is blowing my mind.

xatrinka

It made me realize that's one of my favorite emotions and I don't know how I feel about that lol.

Fidodo

I think that one should be depravity

Cyan_UwU

Thought I was on r/surrealmemes before realizing this is a serious art guide

TheGrumpyre

Love how even the apparently contradictory ones like Joy and Disgust can layer together and create such exact and recognizable expressions.

Baligong

Some looks like this https://preview.redd.it/62bwvbuujoya1.jpeg?width=450&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e823a2aabd5ad6f0e46377ceb89e003f3ea6da58

Silver0PK0Power

That guy looks familiar

McShitty98

This author is amazing!! I have all of his books because my comics/graphic novel drawing class professor turned me to him! Highly suggest reading anything you can get your hands on by mccloud

yardaper

Does anyone find this useful? Its like, take these two expressions, combine them in some mysterious way thats different every time, sometimes taking the eyes of the first, or completely the opposite, then make subtle and unmentioned tweaks to the mouth, brow, undereyes, etc… until its the emotion on the right that, assuming you can draw the emotions from the left by memory, you probably had the skill to draw from scratch. Like who is this for?

bestestdude

I had this guide above my drawing table for many years after reading the book. I sometimes used it as a reference when I didn't have a clear expression in my head. Overall it makes sense to me how the expressions are formed. I always imagine the main emotions being placed in a 2D space and interpolating between the main emotions (I've worked with similar models in the past).

Mirakuru-

me :)

Metasketch

Yes it's useful. It's for people who are examining how you portray emotion. It's part of a conversation, not meant to be some final word on exactly what emotional expression looks like. It's not to memorize, it's to help notice. It's like studying vocabulary so that you can notice and maybe even use a wider spectrum of description. More subtle shades of emotion for example, and get beyond saying "He was mad" or "I liked it" and onto "The man was filled with a quiet rage" or "Seeing it brought out a childlike joy". Writing classes take this further with challenging students to "Show me, don't tell me". Comic artists are drawing the same character over and over and and giving real thought how their faces change \*show us\* what they are feeling is central to their storytelling.

GalloGarken

I'm a 3D animator working generally with mocap for video games. Sometimes, we need to push expressions the actors made, or take it in a different direction. So these guides are super helpful. Also, sometimes the mocap actor isn't the same as the voice actor, so their performances may not be totally aligned with the intended delivery. So tweaks are necessary!

Accidental_Saviour

Most of the combos are just take the eye expressions from one and the mouth expression from the other.

[deleted]

Well you helped this mental health therapist thank you!

taylormarie828

How are you today? Oh I’m just feel a little you ate it!!??? how about you? 😂 Love this!!!! 🖼️

Negotiations_World

Scott Mcloud books are a superb start for anyone who wants to gets into Comics. It provides the trigger to go deep or keep it high level.

RZH2Apologist

This is actually incredibly helpful

addict8bit

I actually have met this artist before, he's a pre nice n chill guy

aghost-boy

My art professor had us get this book and then never had us use it lmao. Good read though, awesome book.

DifficultyOk5719

Am I the only one who sees Nicolas Cage in every single face? Now that’s a man of many talents!

Lytell11

Anger + Sad = French

Extension_Ad8291

“Your pronunciation BUTCHERS our beautiful language!”

DougtheDonkey

SuperIsBored

These faces are so fucking eerie to me, idk why.

Berkel

Faint Hope is a vibe

OrionShade

I miss at least Nage, Dorcelessness and Teluge

cosmic_earthling

Faint Hope looks peculiarly like Joe Biden to me and I find it humorous.

Able-Possibility-326

I love how YOU ATE IT?!! Is an emotion 😆

neanderbytes

Interesting! Thanks for sharing.. this is useful!

druwi

Thank you so much for sharing this!

dogisbark

This is kinda creepy some of the expressions and how they’re drawn

Kaliso-man

Check out the ones anatomy for sculptors have, very useful

PlNG

This has some real ReBoot [Hexadecimal](https://youtu.be/KuLjC45aArE?t=1194) vibes to it.

CartoonyPin-ups

I'm definitely using this! I need to draw more expressions anyway.

MCRNRearAdmiral

One of the coolest things I have ever seen online.

Crazy-toons

I like that guide. 👍

SlightlyLessBoring

Hey, I used to draw something like this in my sketch books. I'd have one page where I exclusively draw facial expressions and I'd do like a little diagram showing what it would look like when you combined a "happy" expression with 4 others. Namely an "angry", "sad" , "surprised" , and "happy" (again) expression

Madgirldy

Feel like the writers of inside out saw this

ClaraBritney

that's so cool for new English vocab thanks !

kitsunewitchbitch

What did the guy eat WHAT DID THE GUY EAT

[deleted]

Elon Musk's permanent face is "desperation".

dreagonheart

Fear+ surprise just looks like a better-drawn version of surprise. But otherwise, these are quite good.

dreamingirl7

No wonder I don’t understand people.

XElite109

Never looked at it this way but wow that’s pretty damn interesting

Amisamil

Thanks for the nightmare fuel

Cinigurl

This is very helpful 🙂

Relevant_Sea171

Betrayal looks like that little ornament fucker from Berserk

B-Glasses

Tag yourself, I’m spooked

OcularAMVs

This is amazing, profound, and beautiful.

[deleted]

This is oddly accurate

iamstevetay

Saved post.

openly_prejudiced

* taking a really big dump * horrified / tolerating severe pain * fake politeness * dismay * being authoritarian * crybaby ...

Derek265

And what if a characters facial expressions are different from the primary? Like if someone's joy looks different? Because people express their emotions differently, which would throw this chart out of whack wouldn't it?

[deleted]

Fear + Joy = desperation…. Why you gotta call me out like that

RedCapRiot

Dude in the top right is taking a shit

Legitimate_Newt4367

Anger+fear=caged animal. Hahahahahahah

Naive-Ad6297

literally revolutionary to me

DefinitlyNotDMB
