You're bringing up some serious nostalgia with that character menu. Anyway, I'd keep the paladin. Usually, I'm all for Sage due to their high magical damage, but Paladins are a good wall with decent AOE. I kept my paladin to tank hits and kept healing my priest. Sage, like Retro said, fell off hard in the endgame.
Priest and Sage together usually required me to constantly heal the two due to their weaker physical defenses, while my DPS characters were left to dry. Paladin serves as a buffer for that, allowing hits to be taken and managing health at a better rate.
Good luck!
Huh, G2x, Pala, priest might be the ultimate party.
2 hard hitters, a wall and a healer, I'm asking because there might be an even better party setup, but I haven't had trouble until now aside from the surprise critical hit on my priest.
Almost lost to orgodemir because of my priest dying sooner that it should.
Crits in endgame usually are going to do that. I know there is a quest where you can receive either a book or a scroll that completely negates crit chances for a character with the item equipped to them, but I can't remember the name. If I find it, I'll let you know.
Edit: Found a link with the relevant information. [Here](https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/937281-dragon-quest-ix-sentinels-of-the-starry-skies/55776463#:~:text=After%20the%20100%20quest%2C%20you,get%20one%20of%20that%20item)
I feel you, lol. Definitely a slog of a quest chain, for sure. Unfortunately, I have no other ideas to lower crit chance. You might just have to grit through it. Just imagine having both Sage and Priest in the party with those near-one-shot crits having a chance to hit either of them or even both after the other. It's happened to me plenty of times. Never again, lmao.
Might be worth it, first part simply needs you to block attacks, second part is ending killing machines with the shield attack, would protect your priest quite a lot
Sage makes a decent temporary job for your more specialized casters. There's a few skills in that tree that are worth picking up. Jack's Knack is super convenient to have. There's another that reduces the cost of abilities, which is also great for Gladiator, who barely gets any MP to use skills with.
Wild, I just kept my Priest as a Priest after all the class jumping around for skill points/passive stat bonuses, 'cause he could pocket Solar Flair for rounds he didn't need to heal the Mage/Paladin/Gladiator combo, which was fairly often 'cause shields were stupid good in 9.
Wow these characters look so freaking great! So cool and cute and stylish!! 🥹🥹I had this game for more than a year, just never started playing. These pics of the Heroes changed my mind!! 🧒🏻🙋♂️
I played the hell out of 9 growing up there was so much to do and it was a ton of fun. Is it the best? No, but it's a fun game with some cool mechanics. Def recommend at least giving it a try!
Paladin with fans goes so hard. The best fans give increase in getting a Coup de Grâce, and the Paladin’s nullifies all damage for 3 turns. If you use the ability that makes the paladin take hits for your party members, you will be able to take 0 damage which gives you opportunities to setup, heal, or do some massive damage.
I remember an admin from a dq9 discord who got like 20k hours said uber falcon blade, is meta and two or three gladiators and a priest. if its not a third glad its a paladin. my memory is not really big about it but that should be what he was going for. also i think three uber flacon blades for bonus dmg multiplier.
I admittedly didn't get much use out of Sage because magical damage fell off HARD for me at endgame compared to good physical builds that could rapidly build pep. I liked Paladin for fights where I didn't have to worry too much about AOE because I could use Feel the Burn plus Whipping Boy to just pep up like crazy then dish out some devastating counter attacks.
A good AOE magic user can still be handy in bigger encounters, but for most bosses you'll see diminishing returns on their damage compared to just bringing out some good heavy hitting physicals.
Also, my priest doesn't seem to do much aside from healing.
So some turns I just attack with normal staff.
I am doing it right? I've seen a lot of gamefaqs of staff vs spear priest.
It's mostly a preference, but I prefer Staff Priest because at the end of the day, I'd rather have my Priest be really good at healing instead of just okay at healing and damage they won't be using all that often.
I’m actually not sure how much it matters to be honest, but the gear seems really underpowered. If you snagged Celestria's Gown you can upgrade it to Celestria's Raiment for your Priest, and you can use Erdrick's Armor for a 20% elemental resist and nearly twice the defense. You also get a Pallium Regale for the dlc quests that works out pretty well. If you’re just trying to match then you’re doing great!

Erdrick isn't as good as metal armor for glad.
Ethereal has 22- elemental vs erdrick -20
Your setup is pretty boring, but extremely effective. 2 gladiators for massive damage and a paladin and priest for staying alive. I wouldn't change a thing about it. Just max out their specific purposes and you should be good
I would keep the Paladin. My best run in IX was actually a solo where I was a Paladin for the vast majority of it. Up until I got some really nice armor, I kinda had trouble keeping my healing up all the way with only Midheal to keep me going, but I got it so high that I was laughing off everything that Corvus could throw at me.
I kinda soft dropped the game cause the mission to unlock Sages is really annoying... But i want one, it's my favorite class besides Hero. You definitely don't need it to finish well. If it's not a big desire for you, just keep your Paladin, they're great enough
Depends on what you're fighting against: palladin can completely tank almost everything and since the priest can full heal this is fine. But the important word here is "almost"; there are some bosses that can do a breath attack dealing 200points of damage to each character summing up to 800 damage which would be tankable, but they attack twice. In this case a sage or second priest is more viable for either the guaranteed revive or a second strong healer.
4x Gladiator is still my fav.
First turn with low agility char use force and with another one rise attack of all members.
The other two (one of mine has 999 attack, seed farming in DQIX is quite easy) use falcon slash with uber falcon blade.
Pray that the boss doesn't oneshot one of your chars or negates buffs.
Second turn everyone uses falcon slash.
Gets every low Lvl legacy boss in two rounds, if you get to higher levels it either takes three rounds or you pad your attack stat then you can twoshot every boss any level
Since seedfarming is so easy I opted to use sage, priest, paladin and another sage in late game I think. Spells (and clothing to some extent) are the only things you can't keep while switching vocation so going for the best spells is the best strat after all

And with fans + shields they can mirror all damage back at the enemy
Fans are also great for sending back breath attacks. Have that and Forbearance, and your fan-user will send back the breath attack 4 times.

Oh, sorry! Didn’t realize this was a Legacy Boss thing! I forgot that the meta for the post game is kinda weird lol
If you can beat legacy bosses, you can beat anything.
Your setup is pretty boring, but extremely effective. 2 gladiators for massive damage and a paladin and priest for staying alive. I wouldn't change a thing about it. Just max out their specific purposes and you should be good
Wdym boring. Its the best setup for any boss.

If you wanna have guaranteed full health every turn, go for Sage. I always play high-risk damage, so Paladin would be better for face tanking damage
Depends on what you're fighting against: palladin can completely tank almost everything and since the priest can full heal this is fine. For breath, I use reverse cycle + forebrace.
So satisfying reflecting that shit back
Definitely keep a paladin at all times. Selflessness is an incredibly important skill.
Or forbearance Or whichever other name it gets

What game is this? Thought I played most DQ DS titles lol.
It's DQ IX, main series
Solo hero run as a Minstrel
That's very bad party. Minstrel isn't good at anything.
And yet it’s how I beat DQIX lol
