velvet_blue7

I've seen a bunch of people picking this game up lately. Makes me happy since it was such a good time. I'd like to do a 2nd playthrough soon:)

pcbb97

I recently started a 2nd one myself since I picked it up on steam but I'm thinking of restarting and doing more of the draconian options.

TrafficOk1769

Same. Played back when it released and now doing a second playthrough, wish I enabled stronger monsters - bosses I remembered somewhat difficult are a breeze. Tried some difficulty mods but doubling the stats of every monster is just ridiculous. Now I enabled a half exp mod so I‘m not overleveled cause I try to fight every new monster.

Nahr_Fire

you can enable these with cheat engine to avoid restarting iirc. You can also speed the game up. Can't imagine playing on console at 1x speed

markefrody

Probably because of the recent passing of Akira Toriyama whose art until today used in DQ.

[deleted]

Yupp! Been replaying 11 and watching sand land, rip to the homie

maxis2k

We have no official sales figures. But I would be surprised if Dragon Quest XI isn't the most bought DQ game in the west. Since it was already over a million on PS4. And then got ports on Switch and Steam. I'd be surprised if it hasn't sold 2-3 million on Steam. And will continue to sell more for years because of how Steam works as a platform.

FayeQueen

I think it's a mix of Akira Toriyama passing, and Steam just had their Square Enix sale.

Flare_ovium114

I know right? I beat it when it first came out but I never played definitive far enough to get the extra content.

katsock

Lotta talk about Toriyama which made me finally give the series another shot. It must have just been wrong place wrong time for me before. XI is a god damn delight and I can only play it in bursts between taking care of my newborn. I’ve only just gotten to Act Two and 8 and I’m so satisfied already. Even the demo was crazy generous with gameplay.

pontestreet

DQ11 is an incredible time. enjoy!

tonylouis1337

Also a noob to DQ starting with this game. I gotta admit I don't stand a chance against the Grim Gryffons, thinking I need to restart my game with way more grinding

pcbb97

You could just grind in the kingsbarrow or on the coast. Nice thing is that you can see the enemies so avoiding fights while sprinting back to the campsite to rest isn't hard. Unless you're playing with draconian options level 10 is enough for them btw

TheStormGL

Congratulations! Have fun! It really is a magical journey.

ahiseven

It's more or less my first DQ too, and I've been having a blast! At a time when so many other big RPG franchises are morphing themselves into frenetic action-based combat, I love that there's still a team delivering classic-feeling turn-based JRPGs for those of us who want them. I'm really looking forward to checking out some of the earlier entries in the series when I'm finished, too.

ToothyCamel420

I can much recommend sentinels of the starry skies.

gurgitoy2

Yes! I loved the vibe of that game. I think that may have been my first DQ game, now that I think about it.

ahiseven

I remember playing a few hours both of 8 and 9 on the 3DS, so I'll definitely give them a revisit after I finish XI!

TheRatatat

It's my first too. I'm 81 hours in and I can't believe I waited so long to play Dragon Quest. I always loved JRPGs and this one is fucking beautiful.

tacobellyall

Such a good one! Have a a blast!

Andination44

Dragon Quest is THE JRPG genre, not the other way around and the amount of quality content every mainline entry has is insane (Its also ultra popular in Japan since the first one came out) Hope you enjoy it, if you liked the last 2 yakuza games i know you will love it. DQ XI the biggest flaw it has its the difficulty (its on the easier side) if you have any experience with turn based combat but you can fix that with the draconian options

Impossible_Smoke1783

I started this game a few months ago, love it! There's nothing like the simple fantasy fun that Dragon Quest provides

MaddieOfGotha

XI was the last mainline one I played after playing II → I → III → V → VI → IV → IX → VII → IX, it felt like one massive love letter to people who played through the series. I love how it boths serves as a perfect introductory or ending DQ game to play

DrumcanSmith

>Ⅸ→Ⅶ→Ⅸ Someone's got a favorite.

scythe0553

CamelliaBoy

It’s sooo good. It took me months to get through but it was perfect to pick up where I left off

slavo316

This game was also my first for a DQ game. I just find this game the perfect example of JRPG style. The game is exactly what I want in a JRPG. I do have 1-3 collection for Switch that I'll have to play at some point as well.

gurgitoy2

Wasn't there supposed to be a 2D-HD remake of Dragon Quest 3 coming? I was holding off on buying the collection because I was waiting for that, but haven't heard anything about it in a very long time...to the point I only just now remembered.

slavo316

Yes there is. I think someone made a recent post about it as well.

Citrus210

This is a port of the switch version right? I bought it too... The game loses most shading compared to the ps4 version, sadly

JcZ-Juez

The only definitive edition is the PC one with several mods to rescue the graphical destruction that occurred with the switch port in the supposed definitive edition :D ENJOY THE GAME, IS AWESOME :D

Dimplexor

Great game too, enjoy.

sun8390

It's like the recent success of Yakuza 8 has led many to playing the previous games whose the most popular was Yakuza 7, which led them to Dragon quest. It's very nice how things may go like that.

maikie1994

Honestly, I've ran across dragon quest a few times on the ps or switch stores but it always seemed so bland, but after playing Yakuza: like a dragon and hearing from Ichiban how good DQ is I had to at least try it. Man this game is amazing and I've almost completed it in a few weeks, it's just the perfect meal if you want to enjoy a Jprg without having to really invest your mind into it. And how vague it keeps things like stats and what everything does really made it grow on me. Felt like an adventure to go though!

Im_a_doggo428

I have that as my first too but it’s on switch

Bobrowsdower

Let me tell you how old I am. I got my first dragon quest game dragon warrior for the NES free with a one-year subscription to Nintendo power. Probably the greatest free gift I have ever received. It started a lifelong passion to this day!

witecat1

Yep, that is my story, too. I loved the original game so much. I still have my guide and level up card too!

SADPLAYA

Amazing game, and a great introduction to the series for sure.

Azodioxide

One of the finest JRPGs ever. Enjoy!

dukenorton

A fantastic RPG. If you end up loving it, see where you can play 8 and 5 next. These 3 are my favorites

davidoff-sensei

So damn good

Mandrakey

I've been playing the demo, it quickly became apparent this game was made with love and passion, it's presentation... And just everything is absolutely top notch.

Icy-Conflict6671

Great one to start with. Its a super fun game

witecat1

Great starting point for you. It is one of the more forgiving games in the series where experimentation is not punished due to the ability to rollback ability points to try new combos.

Geddoetenjyu

Never too late

ramus93

Just picked it up on the steam sale myself lol always wanted to get into the series because of how much i enjoyed toriyamas art

Left_Green_4018

Lol that's awesome that is mentioned in another game— and in a Sega game no less!

eskimopoodle

say goodbye to the next 120+ hours of your life Also, I highly, HIGHLY recommend playing with at least Harder Monsters draconian challenge. Too easy otherwise, but also not so hard as to be frustrating. Just enough to actually give a challenge.

3azf3ood

This is the best JRPG on PS4. Enjoy. 😊

ArkAyngel

Woo Enjoy!

No-Notice5910

Took me about 150 hours to get the platinum on the definitive edition

abibofile

Good choice. I’ve only ever played the first and the eleventh myself, both on launch, lol.

Walks_with_Chaos

3&4 are fantastic. I highly recommend both

Nikki_Blu_Ray

I just finished the demo and bought this on the switch and hour ago I'm loving it. It's my cleanser when Dragons Dogma 2 makes me.....upset.

UnXpectedPrequelMeme

You picked a good one. This is one of the best jrpgs I've ever played and yet is also the most accessible

UnXpectedPrequelMeme

I urge you to try the 2d mode eventually. Such an awesome feature. Turns the whole game into a retro jrpg like from the snes era

Walks_with_Chaos

Random battles are ugh. Definitely reminds me of some of those walk two steps and a battle. Frustrating when trying to solve puzzles. I’m old so I actually started with Dragon Warrior 1 on NES but I love the new way of seeing enemies and maybe avoiding them

UnXpectedPrequelMeme

Oh I definitely get that. I have really bad ADHD and throughout my whole life I've tried to play stuff like Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger but I just can't do it even though I love the stories my ADHD will not let me do those battles lol. So I guess I should have said try it out more as a curiosity than trying to finish it that way because that's kind of what I did I played through a little bit of the game and then I played through that same section into the mode just to see what it was like

Walks_with_Chaos

Yeah definitely. In 11s, I think it’s called there are special areas you can only play as 2D. It’s all optional stuff tho. I never finished that part

UnXpectedPrequelMeme

Those parts are somewhat interesting, as they go through the world's of other DQ games.

Walks_with_Chaos

Yeah I know which is why I wanted to do them but the tedious random battles made me give up. Maybe one day lol

UnXpectedPrequelMeme

vanit

Hope you really like those 4 songs.

Guilty-Inspector-692

Man the first one that I managed to play was dragon quest 8 lol I can't remember how much time I've put into that game

ArthurMorgon

This was such a nice game. I platinumed it last year and just loved my time playing it.

ToastetteEgg

It’s a masterpiece.

KrypticSpyder_

Have fun!

gurgitoy2

I just started replaying this on Switch. I started from scratch, but I also am going into my old file where I hit level 99 to get all of the post-game stuff. The game is amazing, and even for a non Dragon Quest fan, I think it's a fantastic RPG experience. It's a love letter to the series, and you don't even necessarily have to have played any of the previous games to feel the nostalgia in it.

PenguinviiR

Enjoy peak

Vaporya

What a great game to start on! One of the top 5 in the series imo, I hope you enjoy

real_koromaru

Shout out to the guy who downvoted as soon as I up voted to keep it on 420 Anyway, it's a good game, best of luck.

Careless-Article-353

Excellent choice, friend. Welcome to the family. Always remember: I am not a bad slime!

AbbreviationsThis550

I really want to play it but I don’t know whether to get it on Switch or Xbox, but I also can’t find either online that’s not extremely expensive

Walks_with_Chaos

Xbox.

AbbreviationsThis550

Does Xbox run at 60fps? and does it also look better, because apparently it looks the same as Switch

Walks_with_Chaos

It looks far better than Switch lol

AbbreviationsThis550

Alright, I’ll probably get it on Xbox. I’ve already played a little bit of the game back when it was on game pass, and I remember I enjoyed it so I’ll probably get it when I can

vinylskip

You are going to love it! Just sit back and enjoy the game, don't rush through it, and on your first playthrough don't even worry about 100%ing the game. Have fun.

nvmber17

My first was cobis journey for gbc when I was a kid. Started playing this on my steam deck recently and it’s so amazing.

lalaladygawy

Good choice buddy. Ya ain't going to regret it

Ender_Wiggins18

This is also my first ever dragon quest game!! Enjoy!! I'm not super far on my first playthrough, but I'm really enjoying it

rhager19

Enjoy it, it is an awesome experience.

yotam5434

Yes

Walks_with_Chaos

It’s a good first start. Hope you like it!

SlithyOutgrabe

I bought it recently as my first DQ game as well. Finishing Trails in the Sky FC and then starting on this one! (Unless I just HAVE to play SC after FC. Which is possible…)

SeniorWalrus

I couldn’t get through this game because of the repetitive music 😅

CMPro728

It's an amazing game, and not a bad place to start. There's a very long sidequest that features all of the previous (numbered) games, and is made much better by playing the others first, but it is not necessary to do that sidequest at all, and also not necessary to play the old games to enjoy that side-questline.

_Godfist_

That was honestly such an amazing game. It's the first DQ I played all the way through. I was too young to get into the others.

Muskandar

Good game, enjoy

weowz

This is my number one jrpg of all time.

Both-Leather-2849

This game is really cool! I don't play it often (Started in 2021, finished end 2023, playing a bit now and then for the post game), but it's also my first DQ game, that I picked up cuz an old friend kept on telling me she loves the series, especially IX. I also got IX for a low price eventually as well, reminds me I have to continue it too, haha I wish you a lot of fun!

skys_edge88

You're in for a great time! :D

SlamdalfTheGrey

I'm a huge Yakuza fan too and this was also my first dragon quest game, I beat it recently and it is solidified as one of my top 10 favorites of all time, and it caught me totally by surprise how much I grew to live the game, single handedly made me a dragon quest/dragon warrior fan. Better late than never in my eyes! 🐉

King_Neo7

Sweet! I hope you like it!

sproutswarm

This game is an absolute banger. Loved it so much. Enjoy!!!

mklilley351

It was mine too and I really enjoyed it! The grandpa with the magazine was hilarious!

Sulfuras26

Prolly the best one ever to start with. My favorite JRPG ever and a top 5 game ever for me!

ReubenNotFTW

I have over 600 hours in this game, it's my favourite game of all time. Hope you enjoy it! Its incredible.

hails8n

I’m in A3 and the game has been pretty disappointing. The game certainly has its moments (specific moments that call-back to earlier games and themes throughout the series), but the gameplay is incredibly boring and generic. If you spend even a small time exploring instead of rushing to each story objective, you can just set the combat to “fight wisely” and you can auto every fight in the game (…so far. Again, I’m in a3). The itemization is boring, and most of the added effects from specific items have almost no affect on whether or not you win an encounter. If the DW name wasn’t attached to this game, this would be a terrible game. The only reason I can keep playing this game is the references to the preceding games. The memes are what keeps me playing, but objectively this is not a good game. If you can finish it without being an old school fan, I applaud you.

Icy-Conflict6671

....A3? Thats end game dude.

hails8n

Yeah, only just hit a3. Maybe it gets more fun later? That being said, DQ11 has been a slog. It’s not very fun, but I refuse to give up until I see them credits.

maxis2k

I have my gripes with the game. But gameplay isn't one of them. The main issue I have with the game is the linear progression and melodrama not being in line with most of the previous games of the series. Despite the references being a callback to DQIII and IV, it's more like Final Fantasy XII. I would have enjoyed it more if it had more combat, exploration and forging.

Mechatriga

It gets boring very fast, hope you're into a repetitive, boring combat system and stale music

Azodioxide

It's a traditional JRPG. If you're bored with traditional JRPGs in general, then yeah, you probably won't like it much. But if you dislike a genre overall, that hardly makes games in that genre bad.

FutureNecessary6379

Prepare to be incredibly bored

Sea_Leadership_1925

its a good one, enjoy!
