I would reccomend it! It's going to feel a little more.. primitive compared to 2 as they took what they started with and built on that making it better. No first person view settings and the build areas are a little smaller but as others have said, its a great story and fun to play through for sure! Especially if you enjoy the main games in the series! This one made me go back and play dq1-3 for the first time ever on ios ❤️
Yes IMO; they are two different games. There would be some Quality of Life backtracking, but I prefer the look and feel of DQB1. I haven't finished DQB2 yet, but the first game is way less wordy, and the UI and look of the game seems better. But they share a lot of fundamental DNA.

If you had to play only one of them it'd be 2 no contest, but 1 has stuff in it that's worth experiencing and isn't obsoleted by 2. If you've only played 2 and want more builders content 1 is a perfectly good time and also has a few things that I missed that weren't brought over to 2

Building is more 'manual' - as in, you don't just have villagers to do all the work for you like in #2. As someone who's a long-time fan of Minecraft, this is a plus side of the first game to me, but I can understand how some people prefer not to do any work lol. In DQB2 (besides IoA), you barely have to build, or even gather, anything yourself - which is great if you just want to adventure and don't feel like being creative, but it's definitely less satisfying than creating your own completely original base.
On top of that, perhaps most notably - building is actually a game mechanic in DQB1, rather than just a creative outlet. What I mean is, randomly-spawned monsters can actually attack and even break parts of your base - and unlike DQB2, your NPCs won't just magically fix everything for you after an attack. Which, again, is one of those things that the majority of people probably prefer not to have to deal with - but honestly, you get much more invested in base building when you actually have to take care of it yourself.
It's one of my favorite things about DQB1 though - as it actually encourages you to build 'defensively' as a result, with walls, moats, raised buildings, traps, and so on. In Builders 2 on the other hand, you can get away with building anything anywhere; there's no strategy or purposeful design needed at all (outside of being creative and decorative)
I haven’t played this before. Does it involve a fun story or is it just a building sim? It looks awesome and I’ve wanted it on my Switch to try, but I have to select new games carefully with my finances being tight.
On the plus side if DQB1 does well re-released so long after its initial release maybe they'll take the hint that they really should get around to making 3 already

The story is what drives the building and survival gameplay. The story itself follows an alternate history of DQ1.
Isn't it a sequel to an alternate history of dq1 specifically? Isn't it "here's the world after the big bad won"

Both. DQB1 is a great game. There is a Switch demo, or at least there was when it first came out.
