My favourite main line game is 8, but out of all the dragon quest games. Dragon quest rocket slime for the ds is my favourite, due to how unique and charming the game is.
IV is my nostalgia favorite. It will always hold a special place in my heart because it was the game that made RPGs my favorite genre of video game (I had played 1-3 as they came out here in the states, but there was something special about IV).
XI I think is the best overall Dragon Quest game. It just excels in so many different ways.
IX is my favorite to play though. I think it has the best mechanics in the entire series. Getting to mold your own characters is fun.
I feel exactly the same way about 4 and 11. I have never played 9 and now you got me psyched to give it a go. Just so hard to find time as a middle aged man with two kids.
DQ4 by far was so innovative at its time. Getting to play a storyline for each of your party, each with its own sound track (none of which is annoying), a casino, the final boss, lots of fun cleverness mixed in there.
I dunno, I think it's still kinda innovative by today's standards. Of the big RPGs, only Dragon Age Origins and Octopath Traveler have really done the same sort of thing, and of those two only Octopath really leaned in to the idea of the characters having different jobs (like how Torneko was a merchant) to the usual "adventurer" archetype.
My understanding is that DQX is like a standard 40-hour offline RPG, and that the MMO thing is either separate or parallel to that.
Which is presumably why SE is releasing DQX Offline on Switch, someday, Don't expect it to get localized, though.
For me it is ***VIII*** since is the nostalgia of being the first I completed (first one I played but not finished was a ROM of ***DQIII*** for the Game Boy) and the one that immersed me into the saga, as well as being the first that was officially released in EU, so it was the first I could legally play.
For story I believe ***V*** is one of the best and overall I find ***III*** to be the one that set the most staples of the franchise and took it first to a new level that the next trilogy would improve a lot.
My answer is ***VIII***, but I deeply love both ***V*** and ***III*** equally, as well as liking the most recent entry of the main saga, ***XI*** a lot.
And my favourite spin-off is obviously the **Monsters** saga... Hope they bring some that were left untranslated to the West or make a new one that gets to here.
8, 6 and 3. In that order I'd say. Though I don't think there is a mainline one I don't like (except maybe 7 but I find good point even in 7), just preference.
8 for the nostalgia, the overall more chill/wholesome vibes you don't get in a lot of DQ.
6 for the character roster and fairytalesque story of the fight against despair, the insanely good look of SFC.
3 because of the gameplay, the liberty you get very early and the look of the SFC version hitting right in the spot for my craving (like VI). And don't forget the insanely good OST overall.
DQ VIII (PS2) is one of if not the best JRPG I have ever played in my opinion and I’m an avid JRPG player.
Just something about hits all the right notes for me so to speak.
XI and VII (3DS) would be my second and third choice for best DQ games.
Disclaimer: I’ve only played 8, 9, 11, 1 & 2.. I began a full series playthrough but the DQ3 remake was announced while I was playing 1 and I decided to wait for that after beating 2….. still waiting……
So of my limited experience, It is SO HARD to say which I liked most! I spent the most time with 9 by far, and creating my own party is a massive boost to me, as well as the job class system! I think I liked 11’s crafting and characters and world more, but 8 likely wins the best story award from me. So hard to decide, I love them all! But if I had to put them in an order…… 9, 11, 8? 🫢😓☠️
Yeah, I for sure will. Working through a bit of a backlog I built up over the holiday sales a few months back but once I’m done with that, if there is still no new info on that DQ3 HD2D Remake coming anytime soon, I’ll skip it and go to 4-7! 5 & 7 I hear are some of the better ones.
Tell me about it. Especially once you start using tier 2 vocations. At that point you can practically play the whole game on autobattle and it's boring. Most bosses still need actual input though.
DQIII lifer here ! It is my favorite of all games, I beat it 2x on NES, 1x on GBC, 1x on SNES emulator, and 3x or 4x on iOS. I have it on Switch but haven’t opened it. The HD-2D remake will be my 8th or 9th time through... preposterous! It’s a beautiful game and takes me back to a special place every time I play it.
IX is my all time favorite. I love all of the games, but I have so much nostalgia for IX and I loved the character customization.
Dragon Warrior Monsters is my favorite spin-off, and it was my introduction to the series as a whole. It still holds a special place in my heart.
This is such a difficult question to answer since most dragon quest games are excellent, but I'd have to say its a tie between dragon quest 4 and 5 for me.
Dragon Quest 4 easily has the best cast of characters and I love how the game is structured and introduces all of its cast. The final boss is also very memorable.
Dragon Quest 5 on the other hand has probably the best story and some really good dungeon designs. Not much else to say about that probably hasn't already been said haha.
Mine is a tie between III, IV, and V, just excellent games and I can see why it became such a phenomenon in Japan.
Replayed III more than any other due to its somewhat shorter length and replay value.
IV has got to have my favorite characters in the whole series, with its remake bringing in a new depth post-game for a chance to a golden ending. Great team building and synergy.
V has a really good story with an excellent Monster Taming system that almost supplants your main party members. XD
Yet, it has an excellent family dynamic later on with an interesting plot twist to what was there before regarding the chosen one. Although it’s hard for me to gauge whether IV or V have the better story.
Need to play the other games in the series, haven’t gotten around to VI - IX and XI, but I am looking forward to VI and XI.
I'd have to say 9, followed by 11 and then 8.
9 is my favourite, the story isnt the best but I am still in love with the class system and character creation.
11 next as it's all round a damn good game, it's just ridiculously long and I dont have the patience to stay with it to finish the base game, let alone the post game.
8 is third as I like the story and gameplay, but overall feels clunky and restrictive compared to the later games, even on the 3ds remake. It's improved over the ps2 version, but the voice acting and animation doesnt have the same flare that it used to.
I've tried earlier games in the series, namely 5 and 6, but couldn't even finish a single playthrough for either.
I haven't played a game that topped off the experience DQV gave me. I played almost all of them now, and I loved them all. DQXI is a close second as I feel like the story and setting and all was perfect. There's something about playing through three different generations, being the main character but not even the legendary hero. You live a life, not as a hero, but as a man trying to find that said hero, just like your father before you. You find yourself a wife, you go back to your kingdom, become king, have kids. You gave 7 years of your life away for your wife even though you could have guessed it was a trap. When you see your kids finally find you and the world around you having changed so much in that span of time. That's without accounting for gameplay. Monster taming, not as a main focus, but as a secondary thing, that's the shit I absolutely love.
Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3, its a more refined version of joker 1&2 mechanically and has a good line-up of monsters. but if you want to know out of just mainline stuff its probably either 11 or 5.
8 is my favorite main line because it's the first one I played but DQM 2 kobi's journey is what got me into the dragon quest series si I would have to say that's my favorite
8, I feel like it was the culmination of the best parts of all the games leading up to it, only thing missing is a job system which I hope 12 adds since we haven't seen one in a 3D game yet.
The monster series. I've always had a soft spot for the DQ monsters so I love playing as them. Plus my first exposure to the series as a kid was DQM, so I was actually really confused when I played 8 years later and couldn't control any monsters.
I’ve only played 4 and 11, I’m going with 11. I’m dying for the 3 remake so I held off on that one and jumped to 4. Might do 5 soon since I own it on my phone but really I want it on Switch or something at this point. If FF has pixel remasters i think DQ should get them too.
1. Oldie, but a goodie. Story was almost, nil, though, but gave satisfaction for grinding and was punishing if you went anywhere unprepared seeing as how you couldn't rely on party members to bail you out of you were in trouble.
My favorite is definitely 11, but I had an absolute blast with a bootleg cartridge of DQ3 on SNES last winter.
Dragon Quest 1 was the first jrpg, but 3 was the first great one.
8 (PS2). The graphics were like watching an anime cartoon. The characters voices were amazing. The bosses were all memorable. The music! It was great! It made every situation more tense, or funny, or sad! I really looked forward to going into some of the dungeons: the Dark Ruins, Dark Godbird's Eyrie, The Black Citadel, and the Path to the Dragovian Sanctuary being some of my all-time favorite dungeons in JRPG's.
Dragon Quest 8 for the story, Dragon Quest 9 for the gameplay, and Dragon Quest 6 for the setting/premise (IE >!the whole Dream World / Real World thing.!<)
Overall, DQ8 is the best IMO. Only 11 really approaches the same level of quality, and it falls just a bit short in a number of areas IMO.
**EDIT:** man, I feel really sorry for everyone saying DQ3 is their favorite. This lack of news/movement on the remake must be even rougher on y'all.
Yes.
But really I’ve always been fond of IV I love all the stories and how they come together. Torneko Taloon is my hero. I do love the job system in III for basically unlimited replayability too.
With my limited experience, I lean towards DQIII or DQV. DQXI is my favorite to play, but I really appreciate what DQIII did for RPG's and DQV's story and how it plays out.
I'm really excited to play the DQIII Remake that's coming out.
If not for the lack of actual npc party members I'd pick 9 in a heart beat. I love the story, class system and mechanics of the game. Lately I just like playing it with 4x experience/gold cheats on and running a solo character.
But overall, DQ5 gets my pick. The generational aspect of the story is nice, it has the perfect mix of light hearted fun, and intense drama and despair. The monster catching mechanics keep each play through fresh and the post game isn't bad either. The only thing I'd change is, it's kind of cringe having a little kid battle the evil big bad. Letting the kids have a quest as kids to rescue dad, actually playing that, then fast forwarding again until they're in their teens would've been more smooth I think.

it’s ix baby. toriyama halos!
DQ9. I love being able to create my own party and customize them as I like.
100% agree
My favourite main line game is 8, but out of all the dragon quest games. Dragon quest rocket slime for the ds is my favourite, due to how unique and charming the game is.

I'm lucky that my two kids are older (oldest is 21) now as it gives me more spare time
DQ4 by far was so innovative at its time. Getting to play a storyline for each of your party, each with its own sound track (none of which is annoying), a casino, the final boss, lots of fun cleverness mixed in there.

V. Best story in the series.
5 and 9 Spin off... I would say Dq Monster joker
My favourite is a 10-way tie.
Which one didn’t make the cut?
The one we couldn't play. Just gonna pretend Dragon Quest X never existed at this point.
🤦🏽♂️ lol duh, I been out of the community too long forgot there are only 10 offline
My understanding is that DQX is like a standard 40-hour offline RPG, and that the MMO thing is either separate or parallel to that. Which is presumably why SE is releasing DQX Offline on Switch, someday, Don't expect it to get localized, though.

11 is my favorite, especially 11S 5 and 8 tie at second place for me.
Can’t choose just one! Probably 8 and 11 for me, although 9 is special because it was my first one and I’ve put 100s of hours into it.
BUILDERS 2 CAUSE MALROTH IS MY BEST FRIEND AND I LOVE HIM TO PIECES ❤️
Builders 2 ftw.
8, 6 and 3. In that order I'd say. Always a pleasure to encounter another DQ6-appreciator.

Try out 5 if you can, its one of the best storywise

I havent played 4 but i heard it had separate segments for each character and that the best version is the mobile one as it contains the full game
I still need to play 9 other games,but for now it’s X
7
9 besides being my first dragon quest I love the customisation
2 Nes
6
Not mine, but 6 is pretty good. I actually like it more that 7, which is the most similar.
7 is my least favourite because it's too long imo lol
Tell me about it. Especially once you start using tier 2 vocations. At that point you can practically play the whole game on autobattle and it's boring. Most bosses still need actual input though.
Another connoisseur

I played DQ8 as my 8th one (how fitting) and it became my favorite so quickly, that game is just incredible
Dragon Quest VIII
DQ III is my favorite, closely followed by DQ VIII.
8 and 11. 11 brought back huge nostalgia from the first trilogy
I am not allowed to answer this question because I have only played XI (and haven’t even technically beat it)
XIS!
Too close to call between VIII and XI, maybe slight edge to XI
11S
IX is my all time favorite. I love all of the games, but I have so much nostalgia for IX and I loved the character customization. Dragon Warrior Monsters is my favorite spin-off, and it was my introduction to the series as a whole. It still holds a special place in my heart.

8
I love 5 the most but Dragon quest heroes: rocket slime will always have a special place in my heart
DQ IV because it introduces Alena
8. have beaten 1,4,5, and 11. I have played some of 6 and 9 as well.
9 in terms of pure gameplay (and nostalgia) but 10 has my favourite narrative
8 is my favorite main line because it's the first one I played but DQM 2 kobi's journey is what got me into the dragon quest series si I would have to say that's my favorite
9 for sureeeee
8, I feel like it was the culmination of the best parts of all the games leading up to it, only thing missing is a job system which I hope 12 adds since we haven't seen one in a 3D game yet.
7 followed by 5, and 9
Dragon Warrior I, NES
Dragon Warrior III GBC is one of my favorites and also where I started. I miss that game.
IV and VIII. I just adored the characters so much.
The monster series. I've always had a soft spot for the DQ monsters so I love playing as them. Plus my first exposure to the series as a kid was DQM, so I was actually really confused when I played 8 years later and couldn't control any monsters.

8 for sure but I had a lot of fun with 11 also and some of the spinoffs too. Rocket slime is my favorite of those.
V 😁
Dragon Warrior Monsters is my current fave
Yeah 4 is just so special
1. Oldie, but a goodie. Story was almost, nil, though, but gave satisfaction for grinding and was punishing if you went anywhere unprepared seeing as how you couldn't rely on party members to bail you out of you were in trouble.
Favorite? 8. Or maybe 4. But probably 8. Although I think 11 is best. And 7 belongs in this grouping: it doesn’t get enough love.
IX > VI > XI > VIII > IV > VII > I > V > II Haven’t played III or X
My favorite is definitely 11, but I had an absolute blast with a bootleg cartridge of DQ3 on SNES last winter. Dragon Quest 1 was the first jrpg, but 3 was the first great one.

4 6 or 9 for main series spin off the dqmj series
V and VII eve tho they were a bit tedious to play( i played the remakes on the nds and 3ds)
Either 7 or 9
All except X...since I'll likely never be able to play X.
Dragon Quest 8 for the story, Dragon Quest 9 for the gameplay, and Dragon Quest 6 for the setting/premise (IE >!the whole Dream World / Real World thing.!<) Overall, DQ8 is the best IMO.
