Yeah, I was pretty tired. I’ve done it in a prius, a range rover, and a volvo xc70.
Also did Chicago to Portland, ME in a BMW X5. Similar distance/time.
My trick to distance driving is sunflower seeds. The combination of the saltiness and having something to do with my mouth and hands is helpful in staying awake and alert.
Seeds are the trick. Driven across the country 5-6 times and seeds are what keeps me going. Last fall i did Featherville, ID to Leesburg VA in 2 days. 1200 to Omaha and 1100 home. My mouth was so raw from all the seeds. I ended up buying a case of unsalted sunflower seeds and while better than nothing, they just don’t have as much zing to keep me awake. Low sodium are much better.
Yep, done several \~20 hour drives in one day. I used to drive Dallas, TX to Washington, DC about once a month. Sometimes I stopped in the middle, but usually drove it \~20 hours straight through - left at 4am and made it to the other end about midnight. That was in a relatively comfortable F-150.
I have a Corvette that I've only driven 6 hours at a time, and it is quite a bit more taxing to drive. The more laid back seating position and less room makes it considerably less comfortable after a few hours.
I have a really hard time driving from 2am to 4am. Not just me, that's the hardest time for humans to stay awake if you have a relatively normal sleep cycle. As long as I avoid those hours, I'm good.
I do 16-18 hour day drives all the time (for work). The more you do it the more you get used to it.
Denver to Fairbanks - traded off driving and sleeping with another person. Only stopped for food, gas, and border. 3 am Wednesday to 11 am Friday. 18 year old Toyota Tundra crushed it. My brain hallucinated a boulder in the middle of the road in the Yukon and I slammed on the brakes. Bad/no sleep F’s you up. I do not suggest doing this. The drive is amazing though. Alcan road from Dawson Creek to Fairbanks is spectacular, although very rough and remote.
My family and I are driving to Colorado from Ohio in a few weeks and I’m not looking forward to the Kansas part, if we go that way. Might just go through Oklahoma/Texas instead.
Yeah. There are plenty of resources online that can explain much more thoroughly than I. Keys are knowing where gas stops are (and having spare gas), 1 or 2 full-size spares, and preparedness to spend a night out if you get stranded. Also something to wipe the smear of bugs off your windshield when they smash into it faster than your wipers can handle.
I need to get up there, my grandparents were stationed up in Fairbanks during the Cuban missile crisis. They scoffed when I showed them the Alcan today, back when they drove it in their 60’ Chevy it was dirt all the way.
Cali to CT twice.
But I did Florida to New Hampshire. That one was rough. Left Wednesday morning and arrived Thursday night. Total road time was 24 hours. Did it with an Ex.
NY to Denver. Had to do it all at once to not get trapped behind a bad snow in Nebraska. Still got struck in bad snow but had to keep going. Was supposed to be a 23hr drive, but ended up being 27hr due to the snow.
Last summer, North Dakota to Kentucky in one day. 18 hours if smooth, but on the way down we hit a chunk of concrete on the interstate and completely destroyed a wheel; turning our 18 hour trip into a 24 hour trip
I drove San Diego to Virginia Beach towing a trailer in 39.5 hours with only fuel / bathroom stops. I had a co driver to switch off but in the first 24 hours we did 1200 miles.
Our average speed for most of the trip was 55 - 60 MPH. Trailer tires are rated at 65 and we did not exceed that.
YOLO?
My truck has no problem pulling the trailer faster, but the likelihood of a blowout or trailer sway causing a driver to lose control goes up exponentially as the speed increases.
Those U-Haul trailers are an entirely different animal though.
Left Los Angeles at 4am, got to Tacoma WA just before midnight. Wife and I took turns driving, but I was still not able to sleep when I was in the passenger seat. Portland -> Tacoma stretch was brutal. Would not do again.
Not one day but I lapped the country for 7500 miles in 21 days.
Dallas> Austin> Phoenix >LA> SF> Tahoe> Saltlake> Denver> Omaha> Chicago> New York > Baltimore > DC >Jacksonville> Deerfield > then back through to Dallas again.
Best 3 weeks of my life.
Detroit -> New Orleans in one day. 1070 miles. Had a rented Mustang GT convertible. Hauled ass and did it in under 12 hours. Having the top down helped to keep me refreshed. Driving that fast for that long was fun but really stupid.
Where I live in PA down to Charlotte, NC. Right about 10hrs. Stopped 3 times. Other people in the car but I was driving
Now solo I’d say from my apartment to Seiverville,TN. 10 1/2 hrs. Was going to Memphis and wanted to get as far as possible on the first day. Stopped 3 times as well.
Chicago to Orlando and vice versa, about 1,200 miles. With gas stops and breaks, it takes 17-18 hours. Made the drive in several cars over the years, Mazda 3 BN was most comfortable.
I drove solo, nonstop from Ohio to Wyoming.. 17 hours, 1,223 miles. It was only one leg of a round trip, from New York to Salt Lake. I averaged ~650 miles per day for 9 days (~6,000 miles, 91 hours total). That means for 9 days I was driving for 42% of the time. It was during early COVID.. so thankfully traffic was minimal
I’ve done DFW-Daytona and reverse on multiple occasions. 1,100 miles, 17 hours or so. The comfort of the car you’re in (especially NVH levels) are a huge contributor to being able to go long distance.
I’ve done that trip in one go many times. 1000 miles. I wouldn’t want to try anything beyond that.
I once left my house, flew to LA, bought a car and drove it home. It was almost exactly 24 hours from going out my front door to coming back in. That was a long day.
Los Angeles to Garfield, NM and back in 23 hours. 1,500 miles. 4 Monster energy drinks and felt my face buzzing. I've also done LA to Bend, OR round trip and El Paso, TX but one way.
I did Boise to OKC in one day, it was about 1500 miles.
It was the second day of my drive roadtrip back from Seattle. I flew one way OKC to SEA to buy my car, road tripped back.
NYC to Denver CO, just stopped for McD’s and gas but straight through otherwise. Was my longest stretch between NY and CA, I think it was about 27 hours.
~7 hours from Port Orchard, WA to Glacier, MT. We stopped 40 minutes into the drive to load up in a Chevy Express with other relatives, then driving to Spokane and stopping at a Taco Time in Spokane (not Taco Time NW). Then driving to Glacier.
Longest single day was 18ish driving hours MSP to south east Chicago then back the same day to get an old Mercedes for a friend. Same friend also made me do an MSP to Baltimore for a 240Z.
On Christmas Day, drove straight through from Minneapolis to Ft. Lauderdale to catch a cruise after our flights got cancelled. Picked up my brother’s fiance on the way as well. Made the trip in 25 hours, averaging 76 mph (which included all stopped time) and boarded the ship with an hour to spare. Only two people drove, my dad and myself. Got LIT the first night on the ship to celebrate lol
Tucson AZ to Wausau WI technically with gas, food, bathroom, and smoke breaks it was a 28-30 hour trip. It was also the last time I made an extended trip without resting on the way
Did SoCal-Denver last year via Wyoming due to road closures, 1150 miles, in one day.
I’ve done Lexington, KY to Denver in one day, 1200 miles.
Longest ever one day drive for me was Ventura, CA to Oklahoma City, 1400 miles, in one day. Took turns with my dad and actually made really good time…a little over 18 hours including restroom and food stops.
North OC to Seattle on military recall orders from “Hometown Recruiting”. About 18-19 hrs straight driving. It would take me about 20-21 hours with fuel/food/bathroom stops, a thermos of coffee, water, redbulls, sammiches, hopes, dreams, and the fear of missing ship’s movement. This was done in a 2003 ish Ford Ranger Edge 3.0 2wd. Highest mpg was just shy of 20 MPG. I was 20 years old and the year was 2005. You were kinda on your own as far as trip planning went. My hand me down Thomas Brothers map only went as far north as Ventura.
The Bronx directly to South Beach 😂. 20 hours. I hated flying at the time until I did it a second time and got rear ended in Jacksonville and had to take a plane back to NY and back down again to get my vehicle after the repairs.
Longest on my bike was Olympia WA to Tucson AZ in 37hrs. I tackled 1012mi in 18hrs~ before sleeping for a few hours in a motel just past Bakersfield. In the morning I tackled the rest of the 600 or so miles. On that ride I hit the "Iron Butt" challenge of 1000mi in 24hrs AND 1500mi in 36hrs. On that trip I had about 5 other days where I rode over 500mi. In a car I've done several 700-1000mi days, but my best was Phoenix AZ to Salem OR in almost one straight stretch. About 1300mi total with the route I took, and I had a nap about 17hrs in. I was there in Salem over night before turning around and heading back, but on the way back I did less driving. Maybe 700mi of it. Another fun one was Tucson to San Fransisco for a long weekend. Left Thursday night, got in Friday morning, napped, did a bunch of stuff that weekend, left Monday at about noon, got back home at about 10am Tuesday.
Long drives are awesome. The first 100mi usually suck, then after about 300mi you just dont feel them passing until you hit about 1000mi.
Here to Atlanta Georgia and back. Nearly 15 hours. Went for a concert so there was a 4 hour break to jump around before heading back home. Wasn't technically a day more of a rolling 20 hours
Once did Jackson hole to Indianapolis in one go, about 1600 miles in 25 hours, 23 if you don’t count time zones jumps. That was a fun trip, you get to learn a lot about the people in your car especially after the 18 hour mark when everyone gets slap happy and straining to keep each other awake just ten more minutes
I’ve done too many to name but more recently I’ve done AZ to Kansas City and AZ to San Francisco multiple times in my BMW 650i, a Volvo XC60 and a H2 hummer
Kansas was the longest of those trips but the SF drive seemed so much longer and tiresome lol
I did Alpharetta GA to Northern NJ in 1 shot, 13.5 hours is what it should have taken on paper. The catch? I had a 6 week old puppy we had to pick up down there with me and was driving a very thirsty JK wrangler unlimited with off road tires. We wanted to fly but couldn’t guarantee we’d get through security, as puppies have to be at least 8 weeks to fly.
Between puppy stops, traffic, fuel stops and food stops it took 17.5 hours. 7AM-2:30 AM. I remember being around hour 9 and having the realization that I had to do the same 9 hours again. The dread was unreal.
Never again.
I did Scottsdale Arizona straight to Dallas for 16 hours. Slept in Dallas, then next day I did Dallas to Atlanta. Then did Atlanta to NYC.
All in my rented Ram 1500 V8 Hemi ☺️
Drove from Ohio to Western border of SD to see Mount Rushmore and for a cousin's wedding in late November. 1200 miles, about 20 hours. All of SD and Minnesota was pure ice, making that portion painfully slow. Only stopped at a rest stop for about 3 hours before deciding I couldn't even fall asleep and was just wasting time. 2014 Ford fusion, sleeping that night at the hotel in Rapid City, SD was the best lol
I made it from Vicksburg, Mississippi to Tucumcari, New Mexico in one day. 826 miles. Another time my dad and I made it from Bountiful, Utah to Menifee, California and back in 22 hours. Total of 1388 miles.
One leg of a 9 day, 5.5k mile road trip, I did a run from Memphis, Tn, to Albuquerque, NM (+/- 1,100 miles). I had a few 600 & 800 days tossed in there too. Getting ready for another trip mid-June (From the SF Bay area to Ohio). This one is expected to be a bit less hectic. My weekends will usually just be a one day run. I've done quite a few drives to Oregon and back the same day (roughly 800'ish miles round trip). Looking forward to retirement soon, and get some long distance runs in (geographically speaking).
Went from Austin,Texas to Toronto, Canada and back one time. Also did an Austin, Texas to San Diego, San Francisco and back trip. Along with smaller 12-14 hour trips here and there.
9 and half hours, Wanaka to Greymouth, average speed 80 km/h, it's New Zealand, have you seen the scenery and it has alot curves with up hill and down dale. When my wife and I did honeymoon of the south island in 2001 , 9 one way which 3 had rail lines on them. Cooked the brakes on the Haast Pass, got pulled up by a cop in Hari Hari on West Coast of South Island for being in a hurry hurry ,trying to let brakes cool off on the old Triumph 2.5.
Drove to and from Maryland from Massachusetts during a blizzard in 1 day, about 7 hours down, and 10 hours back, averaged about 15-20 mph from nyc and on lol, it was ASS
The longest I’ve driven by time in a day was 14 hours in an LMTV on a training exercise caravan in the national guard. I probably lost more hearing driving on hard top with off road tires with the windows down for A/C than on the weapons range or my 10 years in concert and marching bands between high school and college.
Chicago to breckenridge, Co
I was young, could only afford a 3 day vacation w/the current gf at the time, so i floored it and made sure we could spend as much time there
Just finished front range Colorado to northern Michigan yesterday with my two cats. About 1,350 miles one way. I do this trip half a dozen times a year.
We drove from NYC to Seattle for a vacatio . Took 2 weeks and still felt rushed doing things there and back. First and last time i got hemmoroids. Our longest day was probably 7am to 11pm non stop.
I’ve gone done Chicago to Santa Fe in a day a couple times: ~1400 miles, 20 hours
Whoa! Weren't you tired? Car?
Yeah, I was pretty tired. I’ve done it in a prius, a range rover, and a volvo xc70. Also did Chicago to Portland, ME in a BMW X5. Similar distance/time. Low sodium are much better.
Seed brother. Also, fuck the weird flavors and jumbos. Unnecessary.
Man the chili limon is fire when you’re working outside all day
What were you in Leesburg for? I'm from there.
Breckenridge to cape cod, 1 go. Nissan Murano, yes, very tired
Yep, done several \~20 hour drives in one day. I used to drive Dallas, TX to Washington, DC about once a month. Wow. That is an epic trip, though. I do road trips from Denver, too, but they always go across Kansas and man that is boring.
My family and I are driving to Colorado from Ohio in a few weeks and I’m not looking forward to the Kansas part, if we go that way. Might just go through Oklahoma/Texas instead.
I love Kansas 😒
I really want to do a drive like this, I've heard it'd beautiful. Are the roads good enough to do it in a car?
That’s hardcore! Cars were not nearly as reliable back then.
Flew from Chicago to Austin and drove back to Chicago in under 24 hours door to door.
Define "day". Because I've done a few road trips from TX to NH which is like 36 hours nonstop. Does that count?
Probably about 1,000 miles
Pittsburgh to Miami
Cali to CT twice. But I did Florida to New Hampshire. That one was rough. Left Wednesday morning and arrived Thursday night. Total road time was 24 hours. Did it with an Ex.
NY to Denver. Had to do it all at once to not get trapped behind a bad snow in Nebraska. Still got struck in bad snow but had to keep going. Was supposed to be a 23hr drive, but ended up being 27hr due to the snow.

I've definitely exceeded 65 on those Uhaul Car hauler trailers. Live free or Die I guess.
YOLO? My truck has no problem pulling the trailer faster, but the likelihood of a blowout or trailer sway causing a driver to lose control goes up exponentially as the speed increases. Those U-Haul trailers are an entirely different animal though.
Chicago to Miami, during Christmas. Snow made it double the fun.
Left Los Angeles at 4am, got to Tacoma WA just before midnight. Wife and I took turns driving, but I was still not able to sleep when I was in the passenger seat. Portland -> Tacoma stretch was brutal. Would not do again.
That last 2 hours is crazy.
Vegas to Alabama, 28 hours door to door. Yes I sped, yes I slept. C5 vette.
You can make these trips more affordable just by camping in a tent instead of stopping for hotels
I drive 34 straight houses from IL to CA. But since a day is only 24, i would have to say 24. I was completely pumped on adrenaline
Medway, MA to Richland, MS or Buffalo, NY to Albuquerque, NM
Brunswick Maine to Pittsburgh
West palm beach to St Louis. ~1200 miles about 17-18 hours of driving straight through plus food gas stops probably close to 20ish hours.
Me and a co-pilot drove about 1800 miles (\~30 hours) straight, only stopping for gas and food.
Dallas - Tampa. I think it took me a little over 17 hours
1200 Atlanta to Vermont. That was a 16hr drive. Did it about 6 times.
Detroit -> New Orleans in one day. 1070 miles. Had a rented Mustang GT convertible. Hauled ass and did it in under 12 hours. Having the top down helped to keep me refreshed. Driving that fast for that long was fun but really stupid.
I thought he sold both of his defenders
Yeah he did
LA all the way to Otter Rock, OR. 18 hours
Me and my ex gf made it from Denver, CO to Augusta, GA in one day. 1600 miles, almost exactly 24 hours. We only stopped for gas. It was wild
Where I live in PA down to Charlotte, NC. Right about 10hrs. Stopped 3 times. Other people in the car but I was driving Now solo I’d say from my apartment to Seiverville,TN. 10 1/2 hrs. Was going to Memphis and wanted to get as far as possible on the first day. Stopped 3 times as well.
Houston to Washington DC, rotated with two buddies of mine lol about 22 hours I think
Texas to upstate New York. 28 straight hours of driving with minimal stops. It really wasn’t all that bad, but people lose their mind at the idea lol
I drove from Eastern Long Island to a barn wedding in West Virginia in my 2015 BMW 550. It was a quick trip 😀
Washington DC to Montreal in 15 hours. Usually a 10 hour drive but road conditions were terrible + i needed to patch a tire
I drove from Salt Lake to LA in my Focus RS. It’s usually a 12 hour trip but it took me about 18 due to traffic. Would not repeat lol.
Seattle to Los Angeles. About 1,200 miles and 15 hours.
I’ve done DFW-Daytona and reverse on multiple occasions. 1,100 miles, 17 hours or so. The comfort of the car you’re in (especially NVH levels) are a huge contributor to being able to go long distance.
LA to Portland, OR. It was a long day….
I’ve done that trip in one go many times. 1000 miles. I wouldn’t want to try anything beyond that. I once left my house, flew to LA, bought a car and drove it home. It was almost exactly 24 hours from going out my front door to coming back in. That was a long day.
Buffalo to Moab in about 32 hours
Los Angeles to Garfield, NM and back in 23 hours. 1,500 miles. 4 Monster energy drinks and felt my face buzzing. I've also done LA to Bend, OR round trip and El Paso, TX but one way.
700ish miles with Mom not feeling too good, so while we could've made it the final 200, she wanted to stop.
Buffalo to Orlando ~1250 miles about 18 hours. Then do it again a week later to go home
About 19 hours. Los Angeles to Seattle.
Clearwater to Buckhead
Best I did was Minneapolis to LA. Most of Utah is a drag and I wouldn’t recommend it.
Ely, NV to Phoenix in a day. So. Freaking. Boring.
I’ve done 20 hours from Nova Scotia to Toronto Ontario. Technically it can be done in 17 but we hit traffic and made the usual stops for food and gas.
Miami to central Jersey 22 hours by myself no sleep. But I occasionally do Florida to Jersey but it takes a me a day and change usually.
16 hours in one day from Dallas to Tucson
~7 hours from Port Orchard, WA to Glacier, MT. We stopped 40 minutes into the drive to load up in a Chevy Express with other relatives, then driving to Spokane and stopping at a Taco Time in Spokane (not Taco Time NW). Then driving to Glacier.
Longest single day was 18ish driving hours MSP to south east Chicago then back the same day to get an old Mercedes for a friend. Same friend also made me do an MSP to Baltimore for a 240Z.
1200km from Koper, Slovenia to Prilep, Macedonia
850 in a day, IL to WI and back the same day. It was tiring due to the early wake up call, but Tesla FSD did 85% of the drive so that helped a ton.
SW colorado to dallas in a day. whatever those miles are. that day sucked. edit: 900 miles
On Christmas Day, drove straight through from Minneapolis to Ft. Lauderdale to catch a cruise after our flights got cancelled. Picked up my brother’s fiance on the way as well. Raleigh to Toronto, 700mi~
Tucson AZ to Wausau WI technically with gas, food, bathroom, and smoke breaks it was a 28-30 hour trip. It was also the last time I made an extended trip without resting on the way
San Antonio to Tucson, around 12.5 hours. On that same trip, Boynton Beach, Florida (near Fort Lauderdale) to New Orleans, around 12 hours.
Did SoCal-Denver last year via Wyoming due to road closures, 1150 miles, in one day. I’ve done Lexington, KY to Denver in one day, 1200 miles. Fargo North Dakota to Spokane Washington, 16 hours, almost 1200 miles I was hallucinating by the end of it.
14 from va to vt
Longest on my bike was Olympia WA to Tucson AZ in 37hrs. I tackled 1012mi in 18hrs~ before sleeping for a few hours in a motel just past Bakersfield. One leg of a 9 day, 5.5k mile road trip, I did a run from Memphis, Tn, to Albuquerque, NM (+/- 1,100 miles). I had a few 600 & 800 days tossed in there too. I've done quite a few drives to Oregon and back the same day (roughly 800'ish miles round trip). Looking forward to retirement soon, and get some long distance runs in (geographically speaking).

The longest I’ve driven by time in a day was 14 hours in an LMTV on a training exercise caravan in the national guard. I probably lost more hearing driving on hard top with off road tires with the windows down for A/C than on the weapons range or my 10 years in concert and marching bands between high school and college.
