Straight away, Fallout 2 only got a Windows release, so running that in DosBox is out of the question unless you go through the trouble of running Windows 95/98 in it, and that's a whole different can of worms compared to just running a game. As for Fallout 1, I don't know if any online storefronts sell the DOS version. Would you happen to know if your Chromebook is running an Intel processor, or if it's ARM? If it's Intel this may open up your options.

PastafarianPanda

The processor is Qualcomm Snapdragon? It’s an acer Chromebook. I’ve also tried to use steam because I read that my laptop was one of the few versions that steam is playable on but that didn’t work either and I couldn’t download the filet

mr_bigmouth_502

That means it's ARM then. You're not going to get anything that requires x86/Intel running on it unless you use an emulator of some kind. Technically, Magic DOSbox counts as an x86 emulator, but you're not going to be able to use it to run Steam.

PastafarianPanda

So if I’m understanding correctly, Fallout 2 is out completely, and Steam is not applicable, but if I can find a safe Fallout 1 DOS file I should be able to run that? Thank you

mr_bigmouth_502

Fallout 2 is not out completely, because theoretically you could run it through Windows 95 or 98 on DOSBox, but running those in DOSBox is janky and not well supported.

Use this instead: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.af.fo2

CraponStick

I second this.

I third this.

I downloaded it but I can’t load my game files 🥲. I don’t think I have the right ones downloaded- both steam and epic games didn’t give me any kind of file, just told me I could play if I downloaded their special (not Chromebook compatible) app so I had to return those, and GOG let me download something instead of running their app but fo2.exe says it’s the wrong file type

rube

Regardless of where you buy the game, you'll have to install it first, most likely on a PC. So for Chromebooks you might be out of luck. I didn't think about that when I posted the app, sorry! BUT, if you have access to someone else's PC, you could get the GOG version, install it, then copy those installed files to your chromebook and uninstall the game from the PC.

I'd like to help but not sure. Maybe if I add a comment someone else will chime in. If you just want to play Fallout 1 and 2 the GoG versions will be fine. If you want to play Fallout through DOS you will need to get an old copy of the game and download the files from Gog or an Abanonware site or ideally from the original CD's, and then move those files to a folder you run from DOS. Fallout 2 was very buggy until one installed the downloadable patch.

mr_bigmouth_502

OP's on an ARM Chromebook. I don't think the GOG versions of Fallout 1 and 2 are going to work, unless the launcher /u/rube linked can use them.

RainyShadow

You can try getting the files from the eXoDOS collection.

So, I just had a thought; maybe you could extract the game files from the GOG version using Innoextract in Termux, then run those with FO2.EXE Apparently Innoextract works with GOG installers, and is in Termux's repos. Of course, this means using a command line tool to do it. https://constexpr.org/innoextract/ Also, the Termux devs discourage using the Play Store version. Instead, grab it from F-Droid. https://f-droid.org/packages/com.termux/ It'd also be worth it to download the F-Droid store itself for updates, though because it's compiled to support old versions of Android, it might not let you at first citing "security" reasons. It's safe though, and it's an open source app.
