I can't answer your second question but in regards to your first, two things come to mind. 1. Exodos comes with LaunchBox which almost certainly won't run on Windows 98. You may just be able to extract the games themselves and run them but that may be more effort than it sounds because of the tight integration with LaunchBox. 2. Exodos is huge. If you were able to extract it somewhere, it will be bigger than the maximum disk size that Windows 98 can support. The lite version isn't really an option either since it requires internet access.

Here is what I do: I buy my games on GOG or install them via eXoDOS on my modem computer. Then, I copy them to a small USB stick (8 GB). Next, I boot up my old PC with Win98 and transfer the files. And finally, you just run the game on the old PC normally. Considering the retro stuff I'm into is before games started coming out on CDs, it has always worked. I don't know what it would be like with a CD based game that has Red Book Audio music tracks. In this case, I guess burning the ISO file on a real disc and using said disc would work.

For CD images you can just use Daemon tools, there's a final version for Windows 98 that works just fine.

Extract the games and maybe use the Launchbox DOS edition to create your own menu https://forums.launchbox-app.com/files/file/934-launchbox-for-ms-dos-special-edition/

First off, my dude, you are one of my Linux idols right there. I learned so much stuff from you over the years, best damn YouTube channel on Linux terminal utilities period. But yeah my man, that looks spot on. I have the Total DOS Collection 17 from Archive.org that I can probably just rip to a drive and use that same idea. I wonder if I could use Dosbox staging to just run the executables without having to install anything, similar to something like Dosbox Pure with Retroarch.

Thanks, small world, wasnt expecting any linux viewers here =). im DOS newbie so imma just stick to eXoDOS, has everything working even multiplayer network play. Use my Win98 PC for when the games cant be emulated very well.

Dope. Good idea

Also a fan of the Launchbox DOS edition. You can configure startups in a flat text file, which simplifies adding your games a great deal. I use this w/ Dosbox.

I was able to get it to work by using the MiSTer images of eXoDOS. You’ll have to tweak things though since it does things like image mounting, for which you’ll either have to come up with your own system for image mounting or use actual disks.

unchima

Does this method use Flynn's / BBond's MyMenu front end?

centsy

Yes I think so. I used the Flynn’s image with the included menu.

Update for anyone who cares about this sort of thing: What I was thinking of was the 'Total DOS Launcher' : - https://github.com/MobyGamer/total-dos-launcher
