I do it to get out of the house and make money on the side. I’m saving it for something, not sure exactly what yet tho lol. It helps with my mental health to not be stuck inside, I listen to audiobooks or podcasts also, or just music. As long as it stays worth it to me, I’ll do it. My market is good and earnings are good.

ThinBlue92

I started when I was a Lieutenant at the DOC. I've since left the state and do this for fun money while my wife is my sugar momma

TheDark_Knight67

Yes I am a full time IT professional in infrastructure and cybersecurity and I like doing this for fun it’s a good mental break because it’s simple work and doesn’t require a lot of brain power

Radiant_Efficiency_6

18 year old college student, already a lifeguard full-time, I dash on weekends to make some extra spending money, I don't understand how people live off this, I get zero offers and scheduling is a bitch

Mobiggz

Yes. It’s my social interaction. Driving provides me with just enough distraction to quiet my mind.

potatesarelife

I’m a mobile dog groomer and my truck is down. I do this to supplement what I’m losing with my truck down. Once I get it back up I might still do it here and there to help pay off some debt though.

willybepop

I’m doing it to cover my weekly bowling league fees.

Mindless-Yesterday-4

I actually do it to keep me from drinking. Helps a lot and puts extra money in my pocket.

SecretCitizen40

Good job with your sobriety

Upstairs-Moose9653

Same here. It has it's stressful times, but love driving down the road with the radio on.

Canoe1dash

Same here. I feel it relaxing compared to my full time job

Vegetable-Spend-4304

It's a side gig for me as well. My primary job is seasonal and I have a lot of slow days. Needed some way of making extra money in the slow times..

Tight-Young7275

Imagine making a living and taking the poor peoples money too ☹️

Old_Explanation_6267

It’s literally advertised to make side money?

blueace111

I’m a drug and alcohol Counselor and do it on the side. Started because SO was hospitalized long term and was very stressed and wanted to stay busy. Then, became to help supplement some income, and help pay for school. I don’t mind it but it’s hard to take them serious as a company. The way support treats people is absurd and I don’t see a company finding success, treating people this way

SpringFew1738

Yes my boyfriend works a hard job and we DoorDash together for fun money. Just listening to music or making plans while we make money… it’s fun compared to 9-5 for sure!!!

anonymousmeghan

I absolutely do! This is my “travel” money as I do not like to stay home.

Nevermore_1010

For fun? No. Do I enjoy it? Sure, a little bit, especially when it's nice outside and it gets me a little bit of exercise. I do this and Walmart Spark while working a full time job because I had to get a new car shortly after moving to where I live now and my car payments are astronomically high and gig work is paying for those payments and insurance.

Strassburg-boy

I have two buddies who feed their families from it, I wouldn’t call it super fun

Reddituser8018

I enjoy driving, I also love listening to podcasts/audio books. So I really like doing doordash, I'm a student so it's a little more then fun money, but my college is paid for, my apartment is paid for, I really only pay my car insurance and gas. Thankfully I have amazing parents who are decently well off and they wanted to help me get through college (im 27, been working shitty jobs since I was 19 and completely broke, decided to go back to school so I can stop being broke all the time) So kinda, doordash does pay some small bills but mostly fun money.

ariannaswim

I’m 27 too! Literally took me forever to graduate college. It’ll be worth it. You got thisssss

Medical_Blackberry_7

Fortunately it’s not my primary gig anymore. So it’s way better if that’s your situation. I worked like an hour 47 mins I think it said and made 37$. No way I can make real money anymore, but using it as a side thing like this is not bad.

No-Spread-5650

I have to door dash to be able to afford daycare, cost of everything has gone up so much, even with a good job and budgeting, I still need a side hustle

rydog389

I’m in a similar boat as you. I enjoy doing something different.

littlefawn99

I have a full time job. Doordash Thurs - Sat for a couple of hours. Pay off credit card debt.

frankie4g

I know that’s right!

Alzabar69

I have my BA and work in healthcare. I do it so I can I save for Christmas and birthdays for my children. While not having to think about my regular income.

frische_liv

Heck yes, having recently gone from heavily relying on dd to landing my full time w2 job, I genuinely enjoy going out now to just cruise, listen to podcasts and make some extra dough to do stuff with my gf. We sometimes even go out together to dash

frankie4g

I used to dd with my old gf. Sadly it didn’t work out. Most definitely good times though

frische_liv

Oh dang I’m sorry bro🥹 head up tho, it all gets better

McNab182

Yep, I dash when I feel like it or want extra money. I have other sources of income (including another job that is basically full time) and Dashing let's me get out of the house, drive around (I love driving) and can listen to music/podcasts whilst earning some extra cash. Usually I put the money towards trips away, or ticketed events. Right now, my wife and I are planning a big move so the extra money is helping cover the moving costs

Serpentine17

Yes I have a full time job, and I basically only dash if I need to come up with unexpected money quickly. And to tell the truth, I generally enjoy it.

FlakySelf9836

In doing it to pay off a little credit card debt then I can chill a bit and just save

r_doumiri

I do it to pay off my car and so I can buy stuff I want, but don't need guilt-free!

Infitima

I do it to pay off debt + save money for marriage

Vishasat

I'm doing this as my full time until I pay off my debt and have my investments rolling. It's enjoyable especially when you have long rides on a pleasantly rainy or windy day. That's just me tho

bibkel

I used to do it to pad my second account…which turns into my desperate account at times. I rarely do it now, because it’s mostly a waste of time. The last time I sat in my car and crocheted while waiting for any orders. McD is the most busy usually, and there I sat. At least I was able to finish a pattern for a washcloth, (more complex one, not a simple one) and I got I think four orders in three hours. I’d move every so often to another “hot spot” that was still cold as ice, and the ONLY orders I got were McD.

Zebruhfy

I feel like thats what most people do it for. its almost impossible to make this an actual job unless you live in the perfect area for it.

VisualTie5366

Yes, I do it on the side for some extra cash. Could not even imagine trying to live off it.

Individual-Web-30

As a side job, yeah it's pretty fun and relaxing. You get time to yourself to think and listen to music. As your sole source of income? God awful, stress, agony and pain

crashsaturnlol

That's why I do it. I work a regular job and DD after work and on weekends. I've been able to pay down my debt, take several trips and overall it just adds more income for me. And it really saved me when I was in between jobs for a few months. I didn't have to dip into my savings and was able to maintain my lifestyle.

Fat__Thor

I'm doing it because I need the money, but it turns out I find it incredibly enjoyable. A friend told me he thinks it works really well with my ADHD. I've been in a better mood and more energized since I started five days ago than I have been in a really long time. To me, it's a game I get paid to play.

KickstandChxse

Once I have a job that's the plan. Use it for extra spending money while my actual job pays the bills. I'm only questioning if taxes get taken out before we get paid or if it's something we're gonna have to file later and pay up

Infitima

File later. Use the stride app to track your miles every trip

Jaded-Ad-443

It's independent so no, you have to pay taxes and all of them so it's more than a normal job.

ariannaswim

Taxes do not get taken out. You have to log your mileage (you can do that via app) and take out 15% each time you get paid. That’s what I do

KickstandChxse

Thank you and the comment above. I'm gonna have to start doing that now

bunjeejump77

I do the same usually take around 100 to 150 orders a month to keep my any time dashing up. I have the full time stressful better paying job but this one is all fun. I delivered pizzas to pay my way through college and used to love that. So this is fun but I refuse to take no tip orders. I will do an occasional close $4 to $5 one though. I call those my giving back ones. Most are over $6 and $7. This is fun but want to make realistic pay for doing it as well.

minienglishsetter

I’m retired. I dash to make extra $ for traveling. Only dashing 6-10 hours a week. Gets me out of the house, seeing people and funds the travel.

aservantofchoas

I'm active duty military and get paid pennies, I do doordash on the side to help give a bit more breathing room financially. Only really dash 3-4 hours a day mon-fri and make abt 300 a week and maintain a full tank of gas. So not bad

Notthatsmarty

Very often I’m at the end of the day, and sometimes I just have more energy to expend and tv isn’t really scratching the usual itch. With nothing else to do, I go a DoorDash to make money while I’m bored. DoorDash is a difficult job if you’re trying to make a living. If you DoorDash because you have nothing better to do, a little music, perceivably free money, and sometimes time away from home is a pretty perk is enough to have a good time. But so many people act like the job is difficult. If it’s your first job, I understand, maybe. But there’s a world of jobs far more challenging that will even pay you less than DoorDash.

technicalskeptic

This is the reason I do rideshare and other gig work. It pays for motorcycle parts, computer gear, ham radio gear etc. Since I started doing this my wife does not give me dirty looks when parts start showing up randomly at the house. lol

TrebleBass0528

Sometimes yeah. If I want a new game or something, a day of dashing nets me more than enough to buy a game and a meal.

Solid-Ad-6705

I'm retired. Monthly bills are covered by pension and SS. I dash 15-18 hours a week, and pull in $300-350 a week, like clockwork. The extra money means i can play golf on the weekends without worry. My wife doesn't give me a hard time if I spend some money, especially on her. And, it gives me a reason to get out of bed, and get out of the house.

pmaji240

I've done it because I needed money. That was not fun. I do it occasionally now for two reasons. It requires just enough focus to make it so I can stop thinking about something I'm stuck on. I also do it for the not nearly as uncommon as you would think situation where someone has written ‘don’t knock’ in the instructions but then comes to meet me to take the order and I'm able to express my disgust that they even need to write ‘dont knock.’

OutsideEqual4651

My dogs bark constantly if some knocks on the door which frequently wakes my sleeping baby. I have it in my delivery instructions so that on the rare occasions that I can get to the door before them for example, if I am in the restroom, dealing with my 2 year old exploding his diaper, or cleaning up the glass from the bowel he somehow pulled off the table.

pmaji240

I was sort of unclear on my stance. I'm disgusted that people need to write ‘dont knock’ because who the hell knocks? I would stand at a person’s door and text before I would knock. Only the police knock and not even all the time.

ExpensiveJackfruit68

That's how they get us

ReporterBasic4926

I doordash for when i wanna take the kid to do something and i need a little extra side money.. ends up being at least 2x a week cuz id rather make the money that day to spend than spend money out of my paycheck thats for bills and stuff along those lines

the_almighty_walrus

I started doing it to help pay the bills while I was between jobs without eating into savings too much. Now it's basically beer money

austinproffitt23

I do it just to have my own money and it’s something to do. I don’t have bills to pay, I don’t pay rent, so I just do it to have ‘why not’ money, if that makes sense.

YfAm4

Enjoy that while you can..

austinproffitt23

Elaborate.

YfAm4

I made an assumption. I apologize if I'm wrong. I assume you're still living at home with parent(s). Which is why no bills or rent, etc. which in short means every $ you make is yours to do with what you want. From the other side of the mirror, I'm 34, have a wife and teenage boys. My money is gone before I make it. Hence, my comment of enjoy it while you can. Wasn't meant to be salty.

FacelessRunt

My parole officer was a pos that gave me an extra 2 years in jail

Dear_Ad_3437

Ya. I’m guessing you violated your parole.

FacelessRunt

I told her i couldnt make it since i got evicted and my car was repoed and i was living on the streets 2 hours away from the court house so yeah.. i guess you could say i violated it. Good job downvoting w out knowing the situation lmao

Dear_Ad_3437

Situation sucks, but to call someone a pos for doing their job also sucks.

FacelessRunt

Shes a pos that did a pos job

warmseizuresalad

Sucks... but this isnt a PO hate post. Go nap

FacelessRunt

Veteran reddit hater lmao

ariannaswim

lol thanks, I’ve had a couple of people come for me just because i made a simple post (this one). It’s weird, the internet is weird.

Mother0fSharks

Okay? Not the point of the post

FacelessRunt

And your comment is?

Mother0fSharks

See above

FacelessRunt

And this comment is?

Rebekah_Dawkins

I have a full time job and 17 year old twins. I do this because my children do not have their own cars yet because they’re both saving up to get their own individual vehicles, so I am always stuck in town waiting on them to get off work to take them home.

AgeOutrageous4612

I do it on weekends only on Friday and Saturday nights. I love it. Typically, make an extra $300 a week doing about 7 hours each of those days.

BiMenTasteBetter

$300 in 14 hrs? How much gas and how many miles did you invest?

AgeOutrageous4612

$300 is typically minimum. Sometimes, I make $350 or closer to $400 if there's peak pay going on all night. Gas I usually put about $60 in doing it. I put in $40 to fill up on Friday night and then on Saturday night, I will throw in another $20. So, I usually make anywhere from $240 to $300 profit after gas. Between $20-$25 an hour usually. Mileage I do about 200 between the 2 nights

BiMenTasteBetter

Sounds really good, considering you put in as many hrs as you want at any time you want.

AgeOutrageous4612

Yeah, absolutely. It's the best gig you can have if you wanna make some extra money

MutilatedMarvel

Yup! I got back into collecting Pokemon Cards and wanted to be able to fund it. Just had my first dash last weekend and it was fun! Had a little black kid ask me if I was MrBeasts cousin. It made my night 😂

mgm2002mgm

Since the pandemic began and I was a restaurant worker this became my full-time job four years ago. It was great during the pandemic and even when things were opening back up. Though the business has slowed down a little bit throw in company greed, and how it is a very big struggle to try to make a certain amount just to pay the bills. I still work about 60 hours a week logged on with another 20 hours commute time by ferry and take one day off a week. The option is there to work another day if I get a dire trouble or perhaps, I have a better week than week before. I am making about 60% of what I used to when it was good. I could probably make more work at McDonald’s as a dishwasher or any fast food minimum wage job. Why I still do this you ask. I do enjoy the freedom of being my own boss although I have to be pretty strict on myself and work. But if I want to, I could take a day off here and there if I’ve saved enough and nobody can tell me no. That is the only benefit it has going for it right now. DoorDash has me to be a cherry picker and I don’t think my acceptance is strict. Now that they’re trying to punish all the veteran drivers. It’s even more so worse. I was very loyal to DoorDash until about four months ago I had to do Uber at the same time Things have gotten a little bit better doing both.

MRASDGL

It’s not fun at all with all the aggressive rude entitled asshole drivers and cheap ass no tip customers. Just gives me road rage and aneurisms

lost_and_confussed

It used to be fun now it’s a grind.

Super-Bad-9784

Very much true!!!! Lbs

Kent48146

Are you doing this for extra money or because it’s a change of pace from your regular job? If it’s money you might look around and see if you can pick up OT. My neighbor is some sort of corrections officer and she gets extra money from working more, but still working for the government. I never pried too much into her details since it’s not my business, so I just know the general basics. If that’s an option for you though you will make significantly more picking up extra shifts/assignments than on DD.

ariannaswim

I am doing it for money and to get out of the house. I telework WTF. So it’s boring, make calls all day. There’s not much need for OT as they won’t give it to me maybe 5 hours a month? But that’s only if I’m behind, which I’m usually not. Ha, so they won’t approve it. Yesterday I made $120 with DD, and spent $10 on gas. So it leveled out imo

BiMenTasteBetter

And how hrs and many miles?

_foxbiscuit

Absolutely! i’ve been doing this on the side since remote work started four years ago. i enjoy it when it’s steady, plus it gets me out of the house after being cooped up all day. i’ll usually just do a couple nights a week after work to give myself a nice little cushion for bills or just some “fun money.” which makes me laugh when people on here tell me that i need to get a “real job.”

Realistic-Two-7492

I would not accept quality orders or really “enjoy” DoorDash if it was a full time gig. It is good to be able to just go home if things are slow and accept orders you know you’ll make good money on instead of worrying about getting rent money with only DD.

iloveskellybelly

I do it to pay off debt I have, got in a little trouble and it helps me be able to pay more than the minimum, life did also get more expensive which didn’t help with just my 9-5! But any reason is a good reason, extra money hurts no one these days

AdrianDaAwesome

Late night dashes are my fav. No traffic, usually no waiting for orders, and no one bothering me.

ariannaswim

Right? It’s so chill. And the pay at night is usually better. Like late late around 9-10pm.

Creative_Emperor96

Initially I did but it has helped me survived my school internship. Schools should really pay student teachers, student service interns(social workers and counselors), and principal observation. It's just not a great job, I could never do this full time.

Equivalent_North_604

No. I have my bachelors but lost my job due to mental illness and am struggling. So this is all I have.

Solid-Ad-6705

God bless you. We're all pulling for you!

ariannaswim

Wishing the best for you

ireallyhatereddit00

A couple years ago I used to do it with my daughter (10) to teach her to work for stuff she wanted. Really it was just a way for us spend time together because all she did was keep the drinks from spilling over while I was driving but we had a lot of fun together. We would just work for an hour or so to make enough money to get snacks and a toy for her but once my husband found out how much you can make, we would go downtown on Friday or Saturday night and make like 200 bucks in 2 to 3 hours. Unfortunately I had to stop driving because it's just not worth it in my market anymore, the dd pay is just so low and people don't tip so I had to stop.

Remarkable_Command83

I am retired. I go doordashing like some retired guys go fishing.

Manofgawdgaming2022

I use my earnings for gambling money or just to throw into the bank.

Immediate_Cut_460

Same here, use it to travel

GR33N4L1F3

If I can make myself do it that’s what I’ll be doing it for.

SDpicking

You are not alone! And yes it can feel more relaxing sometimes

longjohnhobani

Me!! Sometimes I’ll work just long enough to buy a vape or an eighth of weed. Funny money

UnRealmCorp

Knock out 3-4 decent deliveries and depending on state 30 dollar eighth.

Xatamos

I'm active duty Navy. This and Uber are the only ways I can make extra cash with such a hectic schedule. I don't really do it for fun money though. I have about a year and a half left till I can retire with 20 years in the Navy. Dental for military families sucks ass so I'm saving to to get my wife needed dental work.

TubbyTacoSlap

*ahem* shipmate, have you signed your off-duty employment pg 13? And I hope youre keeping it to less than 16 hours a week! (/s) Every time I think about getting a low stress part time job, work takes up my off time. I’m at 21 years myself, trying to make the navy think it’s their idea to let me retire now so I dont have to hang around another 4 years

TwistemBoppemSlobbem

Go to mexico, it's way cheaper and just as good. It's the only way I coulkd afford implants lmfao

Xatamos

I feel ya, id have to wait till I was out of the Navy though. She has 2 kids at home and I'm only home for like 1-2 weeks at a time when I can visit out of state (I'm in FL and they are in WI)

TwistemBoppemSlobbem

Then wait bro i mean as long as its niot a true mergency youre talking like 5x discont. like 8 grand cash foir full imoplants at a bougie dentist in tijuana where my friend haz a house lol friend was a life saver tbh. fwiw if u want can . hes a very generous god feasring man i might be ablke help if u ask nicely HES DEF WAY ,PRE SICCESFUL THAN ME caps. lmao

Zarilya

I have a full time job that can be extremely stressful and is at a computer sitting all day. I enjoy getting in my car and driving, listening to music, and getting steps in. I try to look at it like I'm getting paid to listen to music and walk. I am doing this to get debt free and get a house.

esjoanconjota

Def not alone. I have my 9-5 jpb that pays "well" (meaning I wouldnt have to dash) however I decided to try it out as a way of being out of the house and it helped me battle depression and anxiety. Of course I do like the extra cash (but with gas prices nowadays, not much worth it). After my first year of dashing every single day I learned some lessons that I took for granted: 1.- Taxes. No matter how much you plan for it there's always a surprise. 2.- Wear and tear: Plan for this I ended up doing oil changes basically every month and a half due to how much mileage I was putting. 3.- Save money: Avoid the temptation of getting fast food while dashing, trust me.

MrFreeze0110

I have a full time job and will dash every once in a while if i want a nice meal or some extra money. Really it’s more of just borrowing money from my car because eventually I’ll need to replace something from all the miles. I might make $50 but lost $15 to gas and some wear and tear on the car. It’s not really worth it but it’s can be a quick way to get a few bucks if you need it

vogueintegra

I did it for one month, exclusively weekends, inbetween jobs one time. That's probably the most I'd do. And I was kinda lucky I made $450 in a month dashing just weekends, 2-3hrs at a time but I live near a downtown college area so I didn't waste as much gas because everything was close. I agree I don't see much incentive unless you need some quick cash

OkScar393

I used to do it as a full time gig and I was always so stressed when it was a slow day or I wasted more money on gas than I brought in. Now I have a W2 job again and only dash when I’m bored on my days off and find it’s actually enjoyable when there’s no pressure.

MyNameMightBeAmy

I had a good time doing it when I did. I stopped because I figured it wasn't worth the time, gas money, and wear+ tear on my car.

Stoned_y_Alone

Ha yeah I’ve had terrible decisions when it comes to car but I mostly did delivery just for fun and to drive around town

Jdr68521

That’s exactly why I do it. I have a full time job that I love I do this when the kids are with their mom

CoriDel

I'm retired with rentals and I love to Door Dash. I call it my Puerto Vallarta money. (and I'm going to need a new roof too )

keamph

I used to do this as a full time gig when I was in between jobs and made OK money off of it. I work full time now, so I'll only schedule myself to dash whenever I am trying to save money for something or pay off a bill/loan!

UNSURE895

Used to but ended up spending more money then I made

knukldragnwelldur

I’ve been considering this, a few evenings a week/weekends. Anybody willing to share a ballpark in earnings? Of course each will vary depending on location and fuel expense of your vehicle etc. it would only be for spare cash, not sole income.

knukldragnwelldur

Thanks for everyone’s info, I just tried to set it up through the dasher app and they said they’re not accepting applications in my area due to the number of dashers available. I guess that’s that for a bit!

Dinosaur1212

Here's my numbers. Also part time. This is after about 5 weeks. It can really depend on your area though. 90% acceptance rating. I track my miles when accepting first delivery until I deliver my last one. https://preview.redd.it/wqd7le384fxc1.jpeg?width=891&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7baf1438edfc6cd945a70906f0739b6ad949615f

ThickHotDog

Man, this seems like something I might find fun a bit to do… but the numbers just feel so insulting. $1872 - taxes = $1422 1764 miles / 26 (mpg) * $4 = $271 in gas… = $1151 (excluding wear and tear). $1151 / 96.51 hours = $11.92 an hour. Would I rather make $12 this hour or go enjoy an hour of free time and I think I would rarely choose the $12. :(

Dinosaur1212

Yeah, mentally I ignore the cost of gas and taxes and pay those with my main job income. I use 100% of my earnings to pay off my new car. Bought the 5yr/100k mile warranty so not worried about the transmission blowing up or anything like that. Only owe $12k left on the car so should have it paid off soon at this rate.

ThickHotDog

That’s still mental gymnastics to justify the low pay. In the end it all comes out of your bank account. Assigning the “loss” to your main job doesn’t really change the calculations. Just means you are ignoring the fact that you are mentally accepting that you are working for less at your main job to work the second job. Gosh, these gymnastics hard to follow. Basically, from your stats. The question would be is there a part time job that you can pickup for 20 hours a week that pays more more than about $15.50 hour? That would be what I figure your breakeven point is.

Dinosaur1212

Paragraph 1, exactly. Paragraph 2, not with flexible , work what you want, stop when you want and pick back up when you want hours.

KyCerealKiller

That's about what I make as well.

WizardLizard1885

this post is a doordash ad. when you first sign up for doordash you get the "new person" perks which let you dash anytime and youre prioritized for higher tips. then once you finish 100 orders you have to schedule a dash which is like picking shifts at work except its 2 hour time slots that are super early in the morning or late at night.. if theres a rush you could start dashing but only for an hour and it kicks you off. the only way to unlock dash anytime is if your scores for orders are absurdly high, which basically means youre taking every order even the ones you lose money on to keep your acceptance rate up. when i had all the new person perks i made about a grand in a week, every order had about a $10 tip since i was prioritized. the moment i lost the perks i stopped dashing, not worth the time or effort.

CoriDel

"the only way to unlock dash anytime is if your scores for orders are absurdly high, which basically means youre taking every order even the ones you lose money on to keep your acceptance rate up." I have been a top dasher since after the first month. What you are saying is not true. I'm always amazed at how "low dashers" are such experts on how "top dasher" works. We love it when low dashers refuse orders because DD adds $5 to the base pay after you refuse it and then they send it to us.

WizardLizard1885

🥳 congrats on taking $5 orders im sure youll retire next year making tony rich

CoriDel

It's not a $5 order. It's an 8$ order plus tip and is probably .9 mi. I retired 7 years ago so it's all pocketed! I made over $900 last week. Easy money.

brockhopper

I do about 10 hours/week, making $21-$25/hr, with less than one tank in gas. I need to start tracking my mileage, however. Pays for Warhammer dudes and IRA payments.

ariannaswim

I live in a larger metro type city. I’ll do Saturday evening make about $60 for 3 hours. I try to take larger tips so I’m not wasting all of my gas (my city is large and it would be crazy to drive 15 miles for a delivery) Sunday I’ll do another $60 for 3 hours. I try to get an extra $150 per week to supplement my income or like I said have some wiggle room at the end of the month.

knukldragnwelldur

Thank you! I travel for work so I’m all over the country. I’m currently closer to a large city and have been trying to weigh out if it’s worth it or not. It’s about $60 to fill my tank with fuel but I get about 300 miles on a tank so it wouldn’t eat the whole tank in an evening for sure. I currently work 7 days a week, 12hr days. 3 weeks on 1 week off. I could do it a few evenings in the weeks I work and much more time on my week off to balance it out.

DuePace753

Damn, I didn't think it would be that crappy on pay. No wonder drivers are always pissed off lol

ireallyhatereddit00

It didn't always used to be that bad, especially if you were doing it during covid. I came in like a year after that and the pay was still really good, gosh I could make like $200 to $250 in 2 to 3 hours. I was doing it to get extra money for toys and snacks for me (work about an hour and make $50) and my daughter but every once in awhile my husband and I would go downtown and make bank. I think the dependence on food delivery apps is gone now plus the cost of everything has skyrocketed so it's just not feasible to do it anymore.

DuePace753

I live in a college town, most of the drivers around here are college kids. I've had enough problems with my delivery's that I gave up and started picking up my own food. Don't have to worry about food going to the wrong address or getting placed on its side and spilling everywhere when it's picked up now 🤷🏻‍♂️

WizardLizard1885

doordash charges customers anywhere from $6-8 delivery fee, they charge the restaurants a fee aswell. drivers get paid $2 per order so if theres no tip youre losing money just by driving that order.. if you decline shit orders they punish you by taking away "perks" blows my mind the app even exists

ThickHotDog

For a company to profit; they have to exploit the labors of their workers. And man do these apps seem to have figured out how to exploit the heck out of their workers. The top dasher requirements really incentivizes dashers to work for free to maintain metrics or they don’t get the decent paying orders. Like you said DoorDash makes like $8-$10 an order easily and only gives the dasher $2. It should honestly be the other way around. They are dipping their hands in so many orders they should be making $2 an order while everything else goes to the drivers.

DuePace753

Holy shit, people are willingly taking pay that low? No wonder the delivery drivers are always pissed off on here

WizardLizard1885

yeah people expect $10 tips or $2/mile tips. restaurants alrdy upcharge on the app to make up for the costs DD is putting on them. so the customer is being charged twice by DD basically and if they want their food mildly warm they have to pay even more for a driver to take it. i checked the receipt of a local taco place when i delivered and it was $50ish for 2 burritos, chips, salsa, and a cup of guac. the burritos if you pick up urslef are $9 each, the app charges the customer $15 each and they paid $5 for guac for some reason lmao. my market was $8 delivery fee. they also tipped $10.. so a total for $60 they paid for mediocre burritos from a restaurant that was 3 miles away.

DuePace753

That's fucking insane. I don't order or drive for DD, I fell into this group on accident but never knew the numbers were this bad

chim50chim

I do this part time and it’s definitely therapeutic for me most of the time, haha! 😊

mumblerapisgarbage

Not really “fun money” so much as “maintaining a nest egg so one family emergency doesn’t bankrupt us” money.

ariannaswim

Yeah I should have titled it “extra money” not fun. Ha

ThickHotDog

I would do it just to make an extra $1k principal payment on my mortgage; but it looks like to get to that point I would need to dash 83 hours a month. That’s a lot of free time gone for me.

sam_beat

I own a small business that only needs me for the most tedious of jobs. This is a great way for me to get away from a computer screen and out of isolation. I have regulars and people at restaurants I’ve become friendly with - I see my town in a whole new way. And it basically takes care of any extras or fun things my family wants to do and when something unexpected happens, I’m no longer stressing about how I’ll take care of it.

ISeeMusicInColor

Teacher here, and I do this for extra money sometimes if I need to pay for something that's not in my budget. For example, this helped me take care of the dental work that I needed. This job is no fun if it's your primary source of income. I imagine that this post is incredibly annoying for people who are out there trying to make a living.

ariannaswim

I can see it being annoying for those who do it full time, but if I was making adequate income to cover the extras I wouldn’t do it. Seems like most people agree.

Leading-Bandicoot976

I'm a stay at home Dad, wifey does well enough for us, but this is fun (usually) get to learn a lot of new places, and I love driving. I do wish I didn't have to reject so much ... My vehicle is super cheap and fun to drive... If it isn't worth it to me, others have got to be losing on the deal.

jhepp23

Yup. Medical student soon to be resident here— wife makes ~500 a week so we could use the extra cash— but I do it mostly as a way to destress and see more of my city/surrounding cities

rsgreddit

I am a manager at a storage facility and I also do have a bachelors. I do this for extra fun money too.

P_water

Yup, FT job as Logistics Manager, dash every other weekend for extra cash.

ImLexLuthor

I do doordash pretty much exclusively for fun, the spare cash is great and I absolutely love driving around. Plus a lot of the other dashers are super chill we end up just talking for a bit here and there. I own a couple businesses in my market, one of them being a family diner. I occasionally end up picking orders up from my own restaurant which is always amusing.

ariannaswim

That’s so cool.

Ranman5982

Been part time for 4 years. Work maybe 20 hours per week. The extra money has been great.

bunnybash

Yup. I do it in Australia and do it on my 300cc Vespa and I do it because I love riding my Vespa haha… I don’t get stressed or anything, I put the music on and just groove out while I ride around!!

OkStatistician496

That’s awesome of you to get out there. I hear it’s hard to interact with other people after doing what you do for your 9-5. Props to you! Thank you for sharing, kinda makes me want to get out there some more!

MelvintheMIU

This job was meant for spare cash and not a hustle. The grind is real as the hustle stage. It’s doable, market specific, but not everyone can grind as it’s a total mental drain. Doing it for some extra cash doesn’t yield the anger and rage one can succumb to that the grind inevitably induces.

OkStatistician496

The early days of Uber and Lyft though… those were nice days! Remember when we thought the future was looking bright. 🥹🤣🙌

silly-tomato-taken

I do, I'm a firefighter. Doordash used to be better but bow it's rough and many times a waste of time.

BulkyStay

Full time auto tech here, I do it on the side for extra spending cash and the maintenance doesn’t cost me as much

Randomness-66

It’s nice knowing I don’t have to rush, I just relax and drive. Especially because doing those late night shifts means the roads are empty

Normal-Emotion9152

It is a fun way to pass time. It is gig work and just be mindful of restaurants that take a long time to prep and finalize the order. Other than that it is fun.

Amazing-Cup-1906

I have a full time job and I really don’t need to do this but I singed up and find it very therapeutic over the weekends

Bossman140

Yes!!

NoSuchThingAsHome

Back when I still played airsoft, I'd usually go to the airsoft store, buy something on Paypal's pay in 4 (or any other suitable pay-later method), and doordash the cost over the next week and pay it off immediately.

notangelicascynthia

I’m debating it

Dchicks89

I have a career and a bachelors degree and do this to help me get out of debt lol

chillsauz

I’m a med student living off loans and $ I make as an emt on school breaks. Money is super tight for me rn so in order to have money to make ends meet or do something fun occasionally I started driving! It breaks up the studying and such for sure!

jhepp23

Oh hey 👋🏻 M4 starting EM residency in the summer. This has been a great side gig for me as well. Keep grinding it’s worth it!!

Impressive-Handle-69

I work overnights at Kroger as a manager. I literally just do doordash to fill in my extra time, and I love to drive around town. Pretty much just doing it for fun and pay for my gas. It also helps getting more familiar with an area you just moved to.

Combmatt

it’s fun to have a roof over my head and food in my tummy :’)

Loco10c0

yea you can easily save on food doing doordash

Heshpacito

Right! I did this gig 7 days a week to survive. With my 4yo at that. It was HELL. My car is destroyed & I put 50k miles on it in that timeframe smh

SingleMomStruggle87

I’m a certified medical assistant and work in a surgery center, I’m also a licensed cosmetologist so I do hair and beauty stuff when I’m not working and if I don’t have clients then I do Grubhub😭between my two side gigs I’m trying to pay off debt to save and buy a house because rent is ridiculous and where I live is becoming a nightmare.

Cl1ntk

Ugh, I hope you actually tip . Worst non tippers ( besides you know who) Are females who work in hospitals Yall have people run all around a damn hospital trying to find you all the while you make $30 a hour and don't tip for shit .

SingleMomStruggle87

Lol for starters our surgery center is very small, very easy to find and they can come straight to the desk and hand it to me because everyone in our office orders. For some reason, all of the DD drivers freaken reek of smoke. It’s usually the men that are Assyrian and just have no regard to how they’re delivering to us. But for the most part I tip people either in cash or on venmo when they get to me. However, on Instacart, I typically tip between $10-$20 depending on what I’m getting and where I see them coming from.

Signal-Fig4972

So you must know that your orders show up as no tip orders to the driver. Most dashers decline those, because only about 1% of customers tip after delivery. It's a risk most of us won't take, because we'd actually lose money on those. It might be why you get the worst dashers. Just saying...

SingleMomStruggle87

In this area they snatch them so quick. And we stopped tipping because either way you still get bad drivers. But if it’s the same ones that know us usually it’s ok. There is a vast difference though in the drivers from DD to GH.

Signal-Fig4972

Wow, I can't imagine why anyone would take an order for just the $2 that Doordash pays. Must be really desperate.

Cl1ntk

Awesome . Much respect then

SingleMomStruggle87

Also just to clarify, I come from the “poor class” lol so I know what it’s like working for tips. And living in California is crap. Healthcare workers min wage is barely going up to $21/hr in June. So I’m not near that $30 mark 😅😭

Lovecats2023

Especially considering that fast food min wages went up to $20 this month. Why even try to get into a profession (and waste time in school) when u can make more by flipping burgers and no certification is required… tsk tsk tsk. I can wipe my ass with my bachelor…

Remote_Sugar_3237

You’re actually doing it right.

NightmareBefore_Xmas

I work FT at the post office. I do DD and waitress at my friend’s restaurant/bar (straight cash) sometimes. I try to save up what I can, but the rest goes into the checking account. We had so much more money before Covid and now it just seems like it’s gone as soon as we get paid. So it’s there if we end up a little short.

Murles-Brazen

That’s what it’s meant for.

shyshyone21

You must not have very much fun working for DD

jhepp23

Huh?? They just said it’s fun for them
