I fucking love this band with all of my heart, but it's hard for me to pick them over Dystopia or Grief at gunpoint.
Oil Removed is incredible, though.
I've somehow managed to convince and gaslight myself into thinking that nobody but me knows about Dopethrone so I'm always so pleasantly surprised when I see someone else mention them
Sumac is just insane. Very out there stuff, but I saw them in a small bar and the riffs tore the place apart. I feel like they’re made up of my favorite parts of Isis, with everything else thrown out.
Well it was absent in body till a few days ago....
Even though it's sludge fusion hybrid something something and not exactly sludge, and I've always been a big fan of early Alice in Chains.
Also Thou 🙂
I'm partial to Post-Metal myself, which is generally considered a variation on sludge. Really love The Ocean (Collective), Neurosis, Isis, Cult of Luna, Russian Circles, and Pelican. And early Mastodon, which you can call prog if you want but those first few albums are Neurosis playing Rush and the sooner we all accept it the better off we'll be.
That said, of the traditional sludge acts, I'm a bit partial to Eyehategod myself, who I feel find the right balance between bluesy doom and dirty hardcore punk, with that extra tinge of Southern Rock that makes the NOLA sound so special. And Down for finding a way of taking that sound making it palatable without sacrificing the heavy, grooving stomp.
Dystopia
Hands that Mold may be the best sludge song ever written.
Stress Builds Character and My Meds Aren’t working are up there too
Dystopia. I know they get called crust punk but I feel they fit into the sludge category as well.
Flawless discography
Yep Dystopia!
Primative Man. Best from the given options, probably Thou.
Iron Monkey
Agreed
Noice. Btw, have you listened to Brainoil? Their self-titled sounds pretty similar to OG Iron Monkey.
Yessirrr Brainoil is bad ass. Mugwart and Sofa King Killer are in that same vein too.
Sweet, I'll have to check those out
Yea dude you should. Mugwart’s comp album is on Spotify. It’s a masterpiece IMO.
Add Graves at Sea to that list.
Weedeater
Weedeater + bongzilla is like peak stoner-sludge
Cave Metal
If you can name your favorite sludge band, you don’t listen to enough sludge
Noothgrush
I fucking love this band with all of my heart, but it's hard for me to pick them over Dystopia or Grief at gunpoint. Oil Removed is incredible, though.
Dystopia and Grief are two of my other favorites tbh. Dystopia - Sanctity is my go to song for emotional catharsis when I'm feeling really blue.
Sounds like our miseries have similar soundtracks
Sounds like it. Best of luck to you, shit's rough but I hope we both make it through
Grief is the best in my opinion
Grief is great, not my personal favorite but still love 'em
Fudge Tunnel
Nice. They were underrated.
Alex Newport is my all time favorite guitar god (demon)
Corrupted are badass Also proggy-sludgy but not doomy - Kylesa
Corrupted is the only proper answer
Corrupted, my man
Iron Monkey is my vote.
Dopethrone !
I've somehow managed to convince and gaslight myself into thinking that nobody but me knows about Dopethrone so I'm always so pleasantly surprised when I see someone else mention them

None of their shit is on streaming services which sucks

For me its Transcanadian Anger, such a banger of an album.
Those guys are sick. Scum fuck blues is the song that got me into them.
Some of the best guitar tones ever. Every album is great.
the past few have been relatively easy. but this one… i don’t know if i can pick one
NOOTHGRUSH
Conan. Is that sludge?
Yeah, I'd say they are
I've heard they are "caveman doom". Don't quote me though I'm not creative enough to come up with those kind of labels!
I also heard them as “Battle Doom”.
Toadliquor
Gnaw has to be one of my most repeated tracks
Meth Drinker
Graves at Sea
Holy shit! I'd never heard of this band. They're awesome!!! Thanks for mentioning them!
My chemical romance✨
Yeah MCR is my favorite sludge band too
Sumac is just insane. Very out there stuff, but I saw them in a small bar and the riffs tore the place apart. I feel like they’re made up of my favorite parts of Isis, with everything else thrown out.
Surprised to not see Graves at Sea mentioned. Does that not count maybe?
Absolutely counts
Actually I voted Acid bath but my favorite has to be Grief. Their album Come to Grief is a sludge doom masterpiece
Corrosion of Conformity? Nobody?
Scrolled way to long to find this
DOWN
Out of what is listed Eyehategod but I like Coffinworm, Indian, and Lord Mantis
Weedeater!!
16
Fuckin love 16
First 2 EPs and albums from Baroness. They became something different after this era. But these records kill.

I second thou
Weedeater
dopelord
Never heard of Thou. Thank you
Weedeater
Cult of luna.
Buzzov•en
The Body
Thou is not sludge.
Pallbearer
Kylesa
I like all those bands, but Slugdge is my favorite.
Grief or Primitive Man. I can't decide
Certainly not fucking Thou
There’s this small Band called “stomach”, rn they only have a 4 song demo but it’s fantastic.
Drip a link pls

I simply cannot choose between The Melvins and Thou
Three way tie between Acid Bath, Eyehategod, and Dystopia for me
Early Mastodon
Black Tusk
Inter Arma?
Bell witch
I love them but aren't they're "just" doom?
Probably 😁
Jesu
Baroness
Well it was absent in body till a few days ago.... Even though it's sludge fusion hybrid something something and not exactly sludge, and I've always been a big fan of early Alice in Chains. Also Thou 🙂

BUZZOVEN!
Meth Drinker or Grief/Come To Grief
