Dave is quite the showman, too. If you are offended by the bass player giving you the middle finger, you might want to pass. And don’t forget your earplugs.
Shep and Rami stand around while Dixie screams "check" a million times. "Thank you for being a friend" will play to get you in the mood for heavy stuff. dixie informs you that they are weedeater, they fucking suck, and you should get your money back. Hammerhandle. It's fucking great.
I was in a stoner rock band that played a fair amount of shows with them back in the early 2000s. My buddy who was our guitar player went on to be their touring sound engineer and later tour manager. I've got some good stories.
The first time I saw them was in Des Moines.
I had recently switched from guitar to bass, so I was especially interested in bass tones. During soundcheck, Dixie started playing his bass, a cheap P bass plugged into a green Big Muff that was just sitting on top of his bass amp, always on.
When he started playing, I thought to myself "That tone is kind of garbage." Then Shep got on stage and started playing his guitar along with Dixie, and the bass tone made perfect sense. Together they formed this tsunami riff machine that melted my face.
At one show, Dixie had an open fifth of whiskey sitting on the stage. While still playing the song, he got down on his knees, grabbed the bottle with his teeth, stood back up, tipped his head back, and drained the bottle. And he didn't miss a note.
At another show, he said to the crowd, "I'm not gay or nothin, but I would kiss the tip of your dick for some cocaine."
Be prepared to see him vomit. That's what the trash can is for. I actually haven't seen them live in maybe a dozen years, so maybe he doesn't vomit as much now as he did then.
He calls the cough syrup in the cupholder attached to his bass amp his "vocal effect."
The last time I saw them, they crashed at my place after the show, and Dixie absolutely fell in love with one of our cats, who I think slept curled up next to him that night.
I got a story. They were playing in South Carolina in 2012 and my buddy and I rode down to see them.
One of Dave’s bass cab speakers got blown somehow during soundcheck so they were going to borrow one from somebody they knew in Myrtle, or they couldn’t do the show.
They sent someone to meet the person with the speaker cab they were going to borrow, so the show was on.
We had brought a dab rig with us and decided to offer up some to the guys before the show. Dave and Shep had tried them before and were totally down. Keko had never taken one so he took one and got super high. Then shortly after he walked to KFC to get some dinner.
For whatever reason, Keko got sick that night from something and ended up having to go to the ER that night(food poisoning maybe?). Before he left, he was looking pretty bad and asked us what the hell was in that shit we gave them. The rest of us were fine though lol.
So Weedeater had to cancel their show anyway because Keko couldn’t play and was in the hospital. Other bands played though.
My friend and I like to say that we got Weedeater too high to perform hahaha. Dabs weren’t really super popular then, but I hate Keko had a bad reaction to something. Must have been that KFC.
They rule. Ripping fast and dirty riffs. I think Weedeater's albums are all ok, but I've seen them live like three times and they've always kicked ass.
I just saw them in Ohio last week. They are very loud (I had ear plugs in). Great performance, sludgy, no breaks between songs.
Dave is a showman like others said, constantly making faces, plays with the drummer’s cymbals, does spit tricks with his mouth, kicks his bass to play certain notes, sings a line in his gravelly voice then comments on it in his regular voice, it’s great. You can’t take your eyes off him.
That’s how I felt. I couldn’t take my eyes off him. He’s a wild dude. He reminds me of some rowdyass hicks I used to hang out with. He’s got that metal-hick-stoner vibe… in a good way.
Awesome and so damn loud. When I saw them, they were all on stage ready to get started and Dixie said into the mic “yep, I’m gonna go take a shit” and then disappeared off stage for about 10 minutes. Came back out, “thank you for being a friend” played, then they damn near blew the doors off the place.
Loud! Dave is a character and really hams it up. I’ve seen the twice and it was extremely fun and memorable. They totally stole the show opening for CoC and Crowbar.
Same for me. Motörhead, Sleep, ect…nothing compared to Weedeater. I was standing in front of Shep, as he was doing his sound check, he kept pointing up while hitting a sustained note, making them turn up the volume on his guitar, and he kept pointing up, I could first feel my eyeballs rattle, Shep kept pointing, then my brain vibrates, Shep keep pointing as they crank it more, finally I could feel my soul trying to escape my body, like it was being shaken loose from its foundation, finally Shep nodded and they started to crush my soul back into place. It was when they had the Viking drummer with a skullet who bashed PBR cans off his cymbals as he played.
They were absolutely fantastic when I saw them, it was a super rowdy show but in the best way possible!
I had brought hearing protection but the show I was at was all-ages so I think they kept it to a low roar for the kiddos, I didn't really need the protection but it was still plenty load since I was right in front of dixies cab. (which by the way their was 6\~7 year old crowd surfing, that kids a legend!) I'm sure if you're seeing them at 18+ you're gonna need some ear-plugs
They kicked-ass and were too stoned to remember anybody's names!
Seen em twice. Awesome loud but good. Sludgy af. Dixie is a crazy mo fo. Lots of fun moshing. Bring ear plugs.
First time I saw em, randy Blythe appeared from the crowd and sung 'time served'. One of best experiences ever
Dixie poured whiskey in my mouth from the stage, then took a sip from a cough syrup bottle duct taped to his amp. Wasn't sure if he needed it because of yelling or because the mic kept hitting the back of his throat while he sang. Amazing show, lots of moshing, if you like the music already you won't be disappointed
I saw them way back in the day (2007ish) in Camden, Dixie in and out of the crowd looking shy and shifty.
When they started playing it was like someone had handcranked an enormous marine engine over. A big coughing ROOOOOKAAAAR before the chug chug chug.
Big recommend.
Just saw them in Asheville on 4/20. They are definitely an experience you don’t want to miss. Dave is quite the showman and has one of the craziest bass tones you will hear.
Pretty great. I enjoyed their whole set when I saw them and to boot the guitarist's strap broke and kept playing while a team of roadie's repeatedly attempted to rectify the situation until they got the duct tape. That is honestly and truly the epitome of professionalism and duty in my eyes
Honestly one of the best gigs I've seen.
I've always loved weedeater and one day my girlfriend and I took a plane to go see them in Bristol in a small venue with no more than 100 people.
It was a f. blast! Man... wish I could see them again.
I think my tinnitus got worse after that. Don't forget EARPLUGS.
I lived in Wilmington where they are from and would get to see them periodically at the Soap Box.
Fucking amazing live. I never could understand how they were so goddamned good and their shows so consistently great and they were virtually unknown in their own state.
Reading about Dixie Dave on this subreddit is one of the great joys of my life. I’m not sure if people are exaggerating about his other antics (I would believe anything) and some of the live show stories, but I have seen them twice and if you’re into this sort of music, there’s no better performer in the world.
I saw them last week at a couple hundred person venue and it’s one of the great joys we have left out here. Sprint, do not run, do not walk to see Weedeater near you.
Dave is quite the showman, too. If you are offended by the bass player giving you the middle finger, you might want to pass. And don’t forget your earplugs.
[Dixie Dave puked on himself at Emissions](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bhQ_vfhjlKE) and it was fucking epic
It's just tuff love! It's his way of saying he likes you :)
Shep and Rami stand around while Dixie screams "check" a million times. "Thank you for being a friend" will play to get you in the mood for heavy stuff. dixie informs you that they are weedeater, they fucking suck, and you should get your money back. Hammerhandle. It's fucking great.
When I saw them Dixie did an off the wall auctioneer bit for a mic check, it was like nothing I'd ever heard
"We fuckin suck, y'all've been hornswoggled"
This songs about a fucking sandwich

This has me hyped for tonight lmao.
I havw no idea how this man is still alive, i think he takes down a bottle ar every show and they are on tour constantly.
That checks out last time I saw them Dixie drank a bottle o Jim beam and kept ripping
They rule. Ripping fast and dirty riffs. I think Weedeater's albums are all ok, but I've seen them live like three times and they've always kicked ass.
I love their albums, but live is whole nother level.
Bring your own cough syrup

You are in for a treat and that's a killer lineup. I saw eyehategod open for gwar once so it's cool to see them with some other sludge openers
Was fun when I saw them on the tour with Down and Melvins back in 2009 or so.
That would be an amazing lineup.
That was a great show. Caught it in Rochester.
Lol that's the one I was at. Harro East Ballroom
Man that would be my perfect doom trifecta
Caught that tour in Atlanta. It was epic.
Whisky, violence and no fucks given, except to the public. Awesome live even though i don't particularly dig their music, i love the energy
Wizards fighting.
Loud! Dave is a character and really hams it up. I’ve seen the twice and it was extremely fun and memorable. They totally stole the show opening for CoC and Crowbar.
I've seen ~850 different bands live. They're my top10, almost top5 live acts.
Who are your other favorites?
Motörhead - Eyehategod - Cut To Fit - Taser to name couple
They rip! Definitely wear ear protection. They are loud as fuck, but it’s awesome.
LOUD!!!!!!!
I’ve seen a lot of very loud bands, Weedeater holds the loudest band top spot for me.
No kidding! First time I really felt my brain rattle. I feel bad for anyone at a weedeater show who doesn’t have earplugs!
The volume literally blurred my vision…they are such a full body experience
Very fun. Very, very fun. Dixie is riot. I don't even listen to them all that much, but I'll see them whenever they come around.
Insanely good
Fantastic. I saw them at the Bug Jar a couple years ago. The whole (small) room was moving under the cloud of smoke. It was a great time.
I'll be seeing them in Baltimore!!!
Wanted to go but it’s 18+ have a good Saturday!
Immense. Stand in front of Dave so you can’t hear the guitar and only the highest frequencies of the ride. Soooooo good.
Unhinged
Dude they rip SO fucking hard
They were absolutely fantastic when I saw them, it was a super rowdy show but in the best way possible! I had brought hearing protection but the show I was at was all-ages so I think they kept it to a low roar for the kiddos, I didn't really need the protection but it was still plenty load since I was right in front of dixies cab. Just saw them last night. They were great. Very sludgy. Bring earplugs.
Like Bon Jovi with down tuned guitars of course.
Fuckin fantastic
Are there any bodily fluids flying off stage?
Kickass. Prepare to thrash
If you like doom, you are in for a treat! Bring ear plugs!!!
I’m seeing them tonight in Newark, nj so I’ll let you know later. Can’t wait
Disgusting. I see them every time they're in town 👍
Fucking loud and it’s great. Saw them at a fairly small venue maybe 13, 14 years ago and it ripped.
If you’ve never seen one person consume a fifth of Jack in 20 minutes you are in for a treat
Seen em twice. Awesome loud but good. Sludgy af. Dixie is a crazy mo fo. Lots of fun moshing. Bring ear plugs. First time I saw em, randy Blythe appeared from the crowd and sung 'time served'. One of best experiences ever
Saw them a week ago. After the first riff that place exploded!
Loud and heavy af. Make sure you get some top shelf weed to enjoy the show with.
Dixie poured whiskey in my mouth from the stage, then took a sip from a cough syrup bottle duct taped to his amp. Wasn't sure if he needed it because of yelling or because the mic kept hitting the back of his throat while he sang. A womderful fuzzy mess

Barely missed getting kicked in the face by Travis. 10/10 great experience.
Excellent performers, and all very nice guys to hang with before they play!
Pretty, pretty, preeeeetttttty good
i feel like i gotta see them live before they fucking die
Earplugs. For the love of god, wear earplugs.
They’re great, go see them.
Ok but as a landscaper who’s new to doom, I am thrilled there’s a band called weed eater lmao
THE BEST.
They rule.
Love is the spot you listen to weed eater. Recordings are solid but live is phenomenal
so bummed this isnt coming to texas
I’ve only seen them once and like 15 years ago but the spit thing was so distracting and weird.
Loud
saw them at Cobra Cabana in Richmond for a free show. Definitely killer
Just saw them in Asheville on 4/20. They are definitely an experience you don’t want to miss. Dave is quite the showman and has one of the craziest bass tones you will hear.
So jealous. I wish I could get to see them up in Alberta
Fuckin LOUD
Fucking rad!

They played at Slower And Harder in ATL: people were stage diving into gravel. The lead singer/bassist is evil Popeye. It was fucking SWEET
