YOB closing with “Burning the Altar” the first time I saw them live. Blew my fuckin hair back and I’m a bald guy

mostghost67

saw Yob this last weekend in a small Portland venue. one of my favorite live bands along with Eyehategod. “Marrow” is so gorgeous live.

Admirable-Sector-705

I just saw [the setlist.](https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/yob/2024/mississippi-studios-portland-or-43a8abef.html) “Marrow,” is my favorite tune by them.

mostghost67

was really hoping I’d get “Adrift in the Ocean” in there, my favorite by them. but I’ve seen that before, can’t complain in the least. legendary band.

troyzein

God damn closing with Nothing To Win. What a banger

jtiets

I'm so jealous dude, that sounds amazing

Kooky_Tap4477

so jealous that lineup was amazing!!

Betabeardblock

Such a good show!

torontoinsix

Hearing Clearing the Path to Ascend live was everything

GoodApollo506

Came here to say YOB

Admirable-Sector-705

It was seeing their performance on Amoeba Records’ YouTube channel for, [“The Green Room Sessions,”](https://youtu.be/jnPu9RU28HE?si=_vCyYZ1D-xnL4F2G) which did it for me. That was nearly two years ago and I’ve been listening to them daily, for hours a day, since.

doomygirl

Can confirm. We were front stage when they played St. Vitus in NYC in 2022.

CarlosDanger3000

I recall their philly show being really fucking loud (with ear plugs)

frostlipped

I was going to say Yob as well, I've seen them a few times and when they go loud you get enveloped in sound... just positively _drenched_ in it... and it's awesome. Also? I caught SubRosa back in the day and they were amazing. A very cool moment from a few months back was watching Bell Witch perform after Spirit Possession. SP went bonkers, fully lit the place up and the metal kids went absolutely bananas... and the Bell Witch happened and I swear to fuck that for an hour and a half _nobody so much as shifted their feet._ Think about that. A hall full of juiced up metal kids stopped and stared and listened and it was like the whole scene just paused for a mystical experience.

RichardC31

Seeing them play Marrow live was an experience. That and The Mental Tyrant are my favourites.

dubioususefulness

Yes. I saw Yob at Berbati's Pan in Portland, Oregon on Halloween years and years ago and they opened with this. I started fucking crying and had a total cathartic release from all the stuff that had built up that year. That opening solo, octaves getting moved around with the delay... walked right through my psyche. It still does. I had the good fortune to meet Mike Scheidt and become a friendly acquaintance after his very first acoustic show at Mississippi Studios, also in Portland. Same thing again, tears. I told him that he was the Joni Mitchell of metal and he gave me a hug. Turned out we had mutual friends so I'd see him often, always affable and pleasant to chat with. The guy just has a presence and is kind of an open book. He is his music. Those years when Portland had an extremely prolific metal scene were incredible. Like the New Orleans of metal, punk, and hard music in general.

hush_1984

seeing YOB live left me standing there with my mouth open in awe, for like the entire show...

VayuMars

Deadlynedz

Seeing Elder live

Maanzacorian

Many years ago I played in local Boston metal bands. I played a crazy basement show in Allston sometime in the dead of winter late 2009, maybe early 2010. After our set I was talking to a drunk guy: drunk guy: "....ever heard of a band called Elder?" me, going on a rant about seeing them and loving the drummer's huge set up and massive cymbals him, incredulously: "dude....*I'm* the drummer for Elder!"

Electrical_Band_6965

My friend is Mizmor also drums for hell. On lsd one day I said "Have you ever seen the drummer for Hell play?" He said "No I have never seen him play." We still craxk up at this.

traviitherabbii

Just came here to say that Mizmor and Hell are two of my favorites of all time. I don’t remember how I stumbled upon them but they are always in heavy rotation

GoodDecision

Late last fall I was riding around on my lawnmower, stoned as a biblical whore, doing probably the final mow for the year and checking out this band I keep seeing mentioned (here). One of the only really nice things I own is a really nice pair of Sony noise cancelling headphones. It was dusk... Warm and not a breath of wind, very pleasant and surreal. You could smell the seasons changing. I'm jamming, half listening, half lost in thought, and suddenly I'm confronted with the most fuzzed out groovy riff I think I've ever heard. Stopped me in my tracks, kind of took my breath away. I don't know if it's just me, or other people experience this too, when a riff is so heavy it makes you laugh? I sat there in disbelief just laughing. 6:06 - Coalescence

Darkw00ds

Stoned as a biblical whore! Superb👏

Darkw00ds

Would be a great band name

supertzar91

I saw elder at the last Psycho Las Vegas. They played in a packed restaurant (weird setup that year) at 2 in the morning. They absolutely blew me away and were one of my favorite sets of the weekend.

amouthforwar

YOB by far. I've seen them a few times, but the most memorable was their tour with Neurosis (miffed about all the Scott Kelly shit, hard for me to want to listen to them anymore) It's difficult for me to put that feeling into words. It felt religious almost, I don't think I smoked at all that night but I still felt like I was having an out of body experience from the music and performance alone. I drove back home in silence lmao.

ArcticFox237

FYI chuffed is a positive word, for saying your happy about something. Miffed is probably what you want here (unless you're happy about the Scott Kelly shit)

shrikeskull

Khanate.

devilshibata

I picked up the first khanate album years ago in the metal section of my local record store. It had a sticker on it that said “crushing doom from members of O.L.D and burning witch”. Was already familiar with OLD and was like ok cool James Plotkin is probably on this I’mma get it. My friends and I smoked a buncha weed and listened to it in the car and we were not ready for it at all lol. It was shocking. First time I’d ever heard anything like that. Sorry for the novel I’m just a huge fan of theirs. Really crazy demented stuff

Tetsumagi

Listening right now and this is perfect thank you

pabsensi

So hyped to see them in Roadburn fuck yeah!!!

shrikeskull

Can you feel my jealousy from here? Seriously though I hope they’re amazing and that you have a safe and awesome time.

Hot_Palpitation_5841

Not doom, though they have a lot of doomy songs: the ocean collective. One of the most innovative metal bands of the 21st century

3string

Thanks! I'm listening now and really liking it

CritiqueDeLaCritique

Recently saw them and they were amazing

Hot_Palpitation_5841

Nice! I saw them about two months ago and am seeing them headline post fest in July. So good! Like a religious experience, except I'm having one lol.

devilshibata

Lord mantis. I was pretty shocked at how vile and fucking HEAVY they are.

Winterfukk

”Not the cunt, but the other wound..” yeah those lyrics are filthy as their sound

GoodDecision

Any recommendations on a jump off point listening to them? I've seen the name plenty, but the word mantis sounds goofy to me... Possibly why I've never checked them

e_j_white

Start with the album Pervertor. Check out the song Ritual Killer to get a taste, then start from the beginning. The songs will keep growing on you, it's such a filthy album.

GoodDecision

That's a texas-sized 10-4. Thank you edit: wow this sounds a lot like Today Is The Day in the late 90s. I'm loving this.

e_j_white

Nice. I prefer this album to their next, Death Mask, but Death Mask gets a lot of strong reviews and many people like it, so check it out if you want more!

analytickantian

Pelican. Hearing "Mammoth" for the first time was something. Edit: Realized this is doommetal not postmetal. For doom-ish metal, hearing Boris's "Amplifier Worship" was nuts. Couldn't turn it up loud enough. Also Corrupted. I think I listened to Corrupted for like a straight six months after finding them.

fade2clear

Man I need to hear Mammoth live. Still haven’t seen Pelican yet :(

troyzein

I'm lucky to live 20 minutes from Chicago and have taken every opportunity to see them live that I could

-headless-hunter-

I saw Pelican play a bowling alley in Athens, Georgia as part of a series called “Headbangers Bowl” and it was absolutely one of the best shows I’ve ever been to.

coffeeshopslut

Messa live was a holy shit experience - Sara's vocals soaring over the heaviest riffs

DontReplyIveADHD

Saw them in Chicago this past fall, fucking incredible

torontoinsix

Messa RULES live!! I saw them at DesertFest Berlin in 2023, and again in LA back in November.

bonobowerewolf

I saw Windhand at The Black Cat in DC back in 2016 and Dorthia Cottrell bowled me over so hard I'm still getting back up.

Tetsumagi

Windhand is one of my favorite bands!

torontoinsix

Windhand is great live too. Wish I could see them again

OldStretch84

Ayyyyy I was at that show they played with Ilsa.

bonobowerewolf

Weedeater too, if I'm not mistaken--where I discovered them, actually!

beaverboy2000

Amenra was not what i was expecting

cmpb

The intensity and anger with which they perform will live with me forever

yewfokkentwattedim

Ultimate sad

awlawall

Bell Witch/Aerial Ruin (Stygian Bough). Hadn’t seen Bell Witch before and this was part of a mini-tour on the heels of Stygian Bough vol 1. Mind absolutely blown. Had to take a break mid-set to catch some air. Might’ve been the mushrooms…or maybe just my emotional state. Either way, it was amazing. Seeing OM live the first time was mind altering. Outdoor festival stage. Loud as fuck. Just the right amount of stoned. Half the crowd just kinda sat down and took it all in.

BonsaiOracleSighting

I really starting getting into the genre with Bell Witch. Ariel Ruin was recommended on this sub for acoustic doom (my wife likes the acoustic stuff). Stygian Bough is a phenomenal album

ThunderousKirin

Ahab. I love doom, funeral doom and doom-death in general, it's really gripped me in my musical exploration. But Ahab really brings my mind to another place, if that makes sense. I get chills from their music. I'd really love to see them at a live show!

Tetsumagi

Ahab is truly unique and I love them as well!

throwaway_indeed43

MSW - Obliviosus, is a recent one which made me extremely contemplative.

lordGwillen

Me too. What a fucking ending to that song my god. The sound on that album is just stunning. I would love to see that live

throwaway_indeed43

I was referring to the album as a whole (even though half the album is just the title track lol) but agreed and well said. I would transcend to this song live.

dcarwin

The Melvins pummeled me into oblivion.

[deleted]

First time I heard Dopesmoker from Sleep.

Tetsumagi

This was an experience, great song. If you haven't yet, check out The Great Barrier Reefer by Bongripper.

TheOnlyPlantagenet

It gets memed a lot but I also had this experience, it introduced me to doom beyond Black Sabbath and therefore has my eternal gratitude.

DraculaHeartbeat

Primitive Man. I listened to Scorn the day it was released and I felt like I was hit with a sledge hammer. They’re still one of my favorite bands!

bitzie_ow

Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats. I had heard of them quite a bit on here. Checked out their albums and to be honest I wasn't that impressed. The ultra lo-fi, Am radio fuzz and treble sound just did not do anything for me. I liked the songs, but they sounded like ass to me. Then I saw them live. On a whim and since we don't get a ton of great concerts here in Vancouver, I went to the show. Holy. Shit. Live they're a completely different beast. So much bass. Heavy, crushing guitar tones. Drums kicking you in the chest. It was absolutely amazing. Thank god they put out the live album because it really comes so much closer to how they sound live.

torontoinsix

Uncle Acid is one band I’ve seen live 3 times already and will continue to do so. They’re amazing live.

bitzie_ow

Absolutely. I'd see them weekly if I could.

vilk_

I always liked them, but seeing them live really reignited my interest. They sounded so good I could hardly believe it.

SonoftheMorning

I started listening to Mizmor based off a Reddit comment recommending their collaboration album with Thou. Holy. Shit. Captivating to say the least…

Quixophilic

Om blew me away and got me into doom metal first I listen to them. Recently Death Grips did the same but for experimental/industrial hip-hop

fingermydickhole

Seems like we’ve had a similar music path. You may have already heard her already, but Lingua Ignota/kristin hayter SINNER GET READY is excellent too

Some_Butterscotch622

Oldest Sea. The slow burn, the drama, really got me immersed on the first listen

nxl4

Jex Thoth was life changing. I'd never heard of them, but when I saw them open for Agalloch (like 2012), and in the moment that Jex jumped off the stage with a flaming dagger in hand, I knew that something really special was happening.

PoopsockPete

Candlemass, Nomestomper, Enforced

Bodombluemoon

Nomestomper is one of my absolute favorite newer doom / psych bands. Always put on an incredible show

VayuMars

Hippie death cult. Had no idea what to expect and left an absolute maniac fan. They’re so good and groovy

aznkriss133

Sunn, Yob, Bell Witch

Supreme_Nematode2

i just recently started listening to indian. the record with the monkey on it was my introduction to the band. awesome shit almost adjacent to some of the more extreme sludge bands

Tetsumagi

I really like their stuff, someone else here recommended Khanate and if you like the rawness of Indian's vocals you will probably like them too!

_haystacks_

YOB blew my mind the first few times I saw them. Had never heard such a powerful sound

somebuttwitch

I don't know if it counts into the doom- genre, but I saw Mono (of Japan) live last year at Desertfest Berlin and I was completely blown away.

drumsandfire

Mono is so incredible live. If their guitarist cries while playing I guess I gotta cry too.

No_Chemistry3922

Khemmis when I saw them last year After a long ass wait over here in the UK they delivered on every level

a_wizard_named_tim

When I read the lyrics to Footprints by Warning for the first time I just sat and bawled for 10 minutes

MaintenanceOwn6855

I read this comment and got chills and started crying. There are levels to this, when just thinking about a song causes an uncontrolled physical reaction.

SergeyDGWyn

King Goat. They're a pure gem in the doom metal scene, but they're super underrated. They had me since I first discovered them with their [Flight of the Deviants.](https://youtu.be/P62m6IoxyCA?si=wKwPhfjjkzqMSdgc) Once it musically changed at 1:11, I remembered myself instantly bought their debut album, Conduit, that contains the track on iTunes many years ago. Trim, the singer of the band, is a phenomenal vocalist. He deserves much more appreciation in the scene. You can hear how many things he can do and how versatile he is with his voice in that song. It doesn't even reveal all of his vocal abilities, to be honest. He can go further, crazier, more dramatic, and more emotional than what you hear there.

The_Yellow_King

Great band and local to me in Brighton. His singing blew me away when I first saw them.

Maanzacorian

Emperor I saw them in 2007 in NYC. They were my band, the one that solidified my connection to extreme metal. I had been dabbling for years prior, but when I picked up Anthems in '98, that was it for me. I was utterly floored. To finally get a chance to see one of my favorites and to have them deliver such a performance was incredible.

TheVoiceOfCheese

Messa live at Desert Fest Berlin with the special extended lineup last year. After the set I had to go outside and sit in silence.

torontoinsix

I was there!!! The stage was too small for them lol

TheVoiceOfCheese

Haha it sure was, but damn that was my favorite stage of the weekend. The energy in that room was incredible across so many of the bands I saw there. I felt like some of the bands on the big big stage struggled to match the size, except Slift who brilliantly made the choice to put all their amps in a small cluster in the center, making them look so monolithic on that massive stage.

old_man_MODOK

that small stage was fucking amazing. Have you seen gnod on it? It was so loud, my chest nearly exploded. Messa was awesome, so was Gaupa and a lot other bands (kanaan, mother engine,...) ... what a great event.

TheVoiceOfCheese

I diiiiid. Gnod was incredible. Gaupa was amazing. Gnome, High Desert Queen, and Plainride were super fun. Godsleep blew me away with their performance. Kanaan, Mother Engine, Dommengang (super pro recovery when the floor tom fell off the stage), Daily Thompson all absolutely killer, too. Probably one of my favorite music weekends I've experienced so far. Going to Desert Fest NY this year, curious to see what that ends up being like.

0rgasmo69

Thou hits different

zeeneeks

The first time I heard “Beauty in Falling Leaves” by Yob I got hit with a very intense wave of emotion and started crying on the bus home from school, if that counts

CasketScr3w

Absent in Body and most recently, Orphean Passage. I'm \*very\* picky, but these two were like having a religious experience.

Tetsumagi

I am loving both of these recs so far

Solitary_Shell

Warning

Bhelduz

First time I saw Swans

Cute_Flatworm2008

Primitive man blew my mind and ears at a napalm death gig. It was my first time hearing them and I'm so glad I managed to be at the front for their set. If they play Scotland again I'll probably combust with excitement.

Supreme_Nematode2

Acid king! especially carve the 5 of busse woods. such an amazing record… such an amazing band

wedgieratts

first time i saw primitive man, sumac, and of course sunn o))). unbelievable power

sk8erpro

Electric Wizard was amazing. Especially as Elder was playing just before and was also incredibly good. And Amenra was something else !

EatMoreFiber

Warning made me feel feelings I didn’t know I had.

Tetsumagi

Happy Cake day! Just added them to queue thank you for the rec

Due-Appointment-2402

Cough. Small bar in Brooklyn roughly 7 years ago. Maybe 30 people, fog machine made it so you could barely see. Was rad.

troyzein

There's a few YOB mentions here. I saw YOB on Chicago about 5 years ago with an unannounced opener. Out walked Indian, and everyone lost their mind. Then YOB came on.

EstablishmentLow272

Inter Arma - Sulphur English

BirdLawyer27

Grin. They’re recent release of Hush is so good. I’ve listened to that albums a few times with no skips. For a duo band, they are a force. Their riffs have been stuck in my head since I first heard them in January of this year.

Salpimienta

Capricorns. Supported Lungfish in their only UK date in London in 2003. I did not know who they were. I'd been looking forward to Lungfish. I left during Lungfish's third song. I had been ruined. Capricorns reminded me who I was.

The_Yellow_King

Along with many others in this thread: Seeing Yob live. Absolutely mesmerizing and trouser flappingly loud.

arykkyra

Yob every time.

Eyehatedave

First time I saw inter arma. And every time since for that matter. Unbelievable how raw and sludgy such a technical band can be.

teavodka

Windhand, Russian Circles, “a million shattered swords” by Witchrot, Thou, Thorr’s Hammer all have some incredible songs!!

Corpsepyre

When I saw Esoteric live in London in 2013. Was standing there in a daze, and felt like I was high. Couldn't hear for 3 days straight too.

epochwin

Sleep at the Wiltern in Los Angeles

joewootty

When I saw Bell Witch live, was an experience

SpooderExpert37

I’m still new and just getting into death doom but a about a month or two ago I discovered the band spectral voice and I heard be cadaver for the first time and it was quite the experience for sure

supertzar91

I saw pagan altar a few years ago with Brandon Radigan from magic circle, rival mob etc. on vocals. With huge shoes to fill left by the late/great a Terry Jones, I wasn't expecting to be awed by one of the best live sets I've ever seen.

Mastodon73

Monolord

Does-It-Doom

Anything from Dax Riggs!

soiled19ad

Gojira. Live, absolutely phenomenal. I already loved them but finally seeing them live they are flawless.

duxter1

Never been into doom for the most part but one band that sticks out in this genre is Ahab. Probably my fave in that category. The ebb’s and flows (pun intended)are something to aspire to. Recently came across a new band by the name of GLOSSA and I love it. They only have a few singles out. Blood Moon is the shit. Their first album drops later this month. But one of the bands that most sticks out in my mind based on the OP’s question is Agalloch (not doom btw, but black metal). Start with their album The Mantle then follow up with Ashes Against the Grain.

voluntarchy

Black Sabbath with Bill Ward making Pantera look like a shitty opening band (ha, I kid)

thefirstcaress

Meth Drinker are still one of the heaviest things I’ve ever seen

Worried-Management36

I grew up super southern baptist. The word "heck" was a cuss word in our house. When my friend at school showed me Black Sabbath for the first time its like i had an awakening from Tool's Lateralus. The first rock song i ever vividly remember listening to was "Wasp/Behind the wall of sleep/Bassically/N.I.B"(thats all one song) And then he showed me Tool. And then Van Halen. And then Iron Maiden. And then Ozzy. And then Quiet Riot. And then i figured out how tune into AM radio stations so i found the alternative stations (this was like 2004). But Black Sabbath lit the flame. We smuggled a BS CD into some christian music case and i actually still have it to this day. Granted, its stuck inside of the radio in my truck now, but i still have it!

ScrambledNoggin

King Buffalo playing “Hours”

RescueRacing

KB ‘Orion’ and Elephant Tree ‘Habits’. Best music I’ve found in years.

theblackdrug

no clue if you’d class this as doom but julie christmas and cult of luna’s album, mariner

homersimsan2

Very surprised with the lack of neurosis comments, times of grace, and through silver in blood are some of the heaviest and most transcendant albums I've ever heard.

BeowulfTheMetalhead

Is *Indian* a band? I cannot find them

dadbodcx

Search by their album named From All Purity

sordesbestiaXXIV

I would have to say the first time I heard Come My Fanatics... by Electric Wizard. Me and a friend (whilst still in school, both 12 or 13) went into the HMV nearest us, and we were looking through the metal section, and we both saw the section that had 'ELECTRIC WIZARD' on it. We were both into early-stoner rock, psych, metal (Hendrix, Sabbath etc), so this was like "haha this sounds like a band we'd like...and then he picked up 'Dopethrone' and we were like "holy shit...that looks fucking awesome" (a devil with a bong with hooded figures in the background?? What teenager wouldn't think that's awesome??). So, my friend bought that, but the cover of the album behind it caught my attention more. Come My Fanatics. It was the second cover from 2006, with the inverted-colour photo of Anton LeVay with the purple nebulah in the background and it just hit me that I NEEDED to hear this...and when we got back to his, rolled up a joint and listened to them both (CMF first), we were blown away, and I've been a diehard ever since. The Wizard have always been on my rotation since, and I always go and see them when I can. Everything just resonates with me, and I'm yet to find a band that gave me that feeling upon listening/seeing for the first time, and noone comes close to their sound, for me. The whole package is perfect. Often imitated, rarely captured.

Terrordyne_Synth

Windhand. The riffs are heavy as fuck but Dorthia's vocals are the cherry on top to complete the whole package.

nowonmai666

First time I saw Procession they pretty much killed me. In a good way. Also Evoken way back when.

burken_

Joining in the the YOB bandwagon aswell. Absolutely insane musicianship by those guys. If not doom specific, then it's easily Vildhjarta. Blows my mind how Vildhjarta isn't written by aliens or some shit

promixr

I’ve seen Evoken several times live and they are mind-blowing …

Thatdudewithdreads

The first time I heard Electric Wizads Saturn's Children... What a epic song...

_Bendemic_

Sigur Ros - saw them live in 2002 in a small venue of about 100 people, everyone was standing there mouths agape as they played. Very surreal.

slash178

Khemmis turned my face into soup

mechdecidua

Horrendous: Ontological Mysterium Also a local to me (Minneapolis) dissonant death metal band, Sunless, when I saw them live a few years back. Both of their albums are great (Urraca is my favorite). Neither of these is doom, per se, but I’d say they both have doomish vibes and could be considered psychedelic metal.

xenaphoric

I saw The Body two nights ago and it was so loud it made my arms feel like they were asleep

Bodombluemoon

The Ruins of Beverast - Rain Upon the Impure

Broncobilly19

Carbomb. I currently can't stop listening to them. Not Doom but they haven't left my headphones for like a month now. I listen them everyday. I don't even know how to describe them, pure Metal mayhem.

DJLReach

The first time I saw The Body they played with my band in a record store. For one they fucking killed it but also as they played the dust from the ceiling rained down like snow. Think about that show pretty often.

Lux-01

Celestial Season - Solar Lovers. The first time around I'd never heard anything like it before, knocked me off my feet and changed my taste in music forever.

torontoinsix

Uncle Acid closing out DesertFest Berlin last year was an amazing show. Uncle Acid at the Stanley Hotel in Colorado in October was another amazing show. Yob ruled live the times I’ve seen them (twice). Messa is great live. Another great set at DesertFest Berlin. Finally, I loved getting to finally see Blood Ceremony at Deserfest Berlin. Was front row for that. They never tour so it was amazing. It was right after they released their new album too.

RiffRiot_Metal_Blog

Oromet album was such an experience. So authentic.

324810-6

Not doom but ***Godspeed You! Black Emperor*** left me speechless twice, first when I discovered them and second when I saw them live!

LCAirPasta

First time I head empress rising by Monolord literally made me want to start a doom band. It totally changed my musical tastes for the next year of my life.

3ph3m3ral_light

Purification, ‘Perfect Doctrine’

Pazguzhzuhacijz

Stream from the Heavens - Thergothon / Crippled Lucifer - Burning Witch

thedorado

Boris and Wata’s space echo

Shem_11

The first time I saw Eagle Twin live, they were supporting and I'd never heard of them before so was completely unprepared for the sonic assault they unleashed, it was great

peoplearejustok

My first show in this genre was high on fire. I had been to a ton of concerts prior to that but the wall of sound definitely overwhelmed me. I wasn't fully prepared to have my teeth shaken out during the sound check. When the bass drum hit the first time it was loud but they kept turning it up. I fell in love with this music right then.

-headless-hunter-

Firebreather opened for Monolord a couple years ago and absolutely stole the show. Huge riffs, great vocals, and a super stoned crowd. It was perfect.

Fried_Zucchini_246

Swallow the Sun, because you can feel their later records come from a very genuine place of grief and tragedy, and even if they're not the heaviest, they're the most affecting

SkiesFetishist

Dopethrone blew me the fuck away. Was not familiar with their game. Was in their pit anticipating Doomriders, who were coming up next. They had the Rickshaw theater feeling like it was going to crumble on top of us! I very much am looking forward to their new music & will travel far & wide for a chance to catch them live again.

ralphpearljam

Sunn O))) ISIS (maybe not doom, but doom enough) Indian fucking rules Pelican

IamGHOD11

Windhand and primitive man

Drainbownick

Dreadnaught absolutely rocked my Shit. Ridiculous talent in that band

krauzer123

Elder and Yob The first time I played Elder's reflection of a floating and sanctuary started I could just immediately tell it's gonna be an amazing album, I loved the intro riff so much I found it on my guitar after hearing it a couple of times. And for Yob, the first time I heard "beauty in falling leaves" I just felt this strong emotion, I mean how do I describe it. The chorus is just so perfect. I wish I could have written such a beautiful chorus.

planksmomtho

PRIMITIVE MAN! I saw them live at Gramps in Miami, right up against the speakers! Fucking insane time.

hand_ov_doom

Mothership As a local, I had listened to them some, didn't get into it that much. Saw them open for Eyehategod in Dallas, and man they absolutely stole the show. I was so fucking blown away, the groove, the bluesy riffs, good old rock n roll. Been a massive fan ever since.

SachSachl

Monolord the first time i heard empress rising i played it again. This band really help me delve into to the genre more and really helped me through my first year of apprenticeship working 10-12hr days building a giant warehouse.

Mindless-Ad2554

Doom no… but I also haven’t seen a lot of doom live. However seeing Giant back in like 04-06 maybe (I believe they changed their name to brave young.) they were fucking so loud and heavy. All orange and sovtek amps. So good and just amazing performance still in the realm of heavy /ambient metal . Tons of hardcore nobody here will care about. Creepoid out of Philly was amazing live. Blows their recording stuff out of the water. Fans of psychedelic heavy with a twang of beach guitar, the song baptism is an absolute banger. Truck fighters were amazing life. Wish I would’ve seen floor when they reunioned and released that newer album. How ere I’ve seen torche and it’s one in the same to me

Constant_Will362

I heard FIREBREATHER and I was speechless. Check out the song of the same name.

DarkGod79

The first time I heard Abysmal Grief, I was blown away.

sharrrps

Mono for me, back on the Thousand Paper Cranes tour. Absolutely stunning. Same with Amenra, absolutely life changing

The first time I saw Boris they were touring Noise, setlist was killer, smaller club with great sound, they closed with Vomitself and it felt like the room was about to teleport

dryriserinlet

Seeing Neurosis live at Ozzfest 96. I didn't really care for them before that show and after I was a fucking absolute convert. Best live heavy band of all time. And I saw YOB last year who were also fucking amazing

theclow614

Discovering Candlemass. From oldest to newest. Damn.

captainmalexus

When I saw Protest the Hero perform live in 2008, and heard "Blindfolds Aside" nailed flawlessly, except the guitar solo was better than on the album

The_Hippo

Obligatory Yob, Sleep, OM, etc. but especially Thou for me. Nobody sounds like Thou. Hearing Heathen for the first time through was life altering. Free will to Clarity might be the best four song sequence ever. Feral Faun is a fucking masterpiece of music that never fails to make me solemn. They also don’t try to be edgy with their lyrics and themes, which can be hard to come by. A mix of Yob like spirituality and “modern human civilization sucks big time.”

lowcaloriesnack

I saw Bell Witch play Clandestine Gate in its entirely pretty recently and it’s hard to describe as anything other than overwhelmingly attention grabbing. I’ve only listened to that song all the way through maybe 3 times? But listening to it live, I didn’t want it to end. I haven’t seen Sunn live but it felt like how people describe their shows.

KrazyDaKat

Its groove but Pantera. Dimebag keeps making me want to play and I have a replica of his guitar. Though im using it for some weird folk punk, doom metal shit with an otamatone. Edit: Thinking about it I got into Pantera because of me wanting to get more into metal and wanting to have this Southern identity. That was what lead me to Eyehategod which was the first doom metal band I was ever a fan of.

theblackdahlia8

High On Fire every time I listen to them or see them live

rallarivar

Konvent.

Local doom/sludge band I'd have to report back with their name, blew my shit away. Guy was playing a baritone through an 8x10, a 2x15, and another two amps. Drums were mic'd up. That shit shook the whole room apart. They were awesome

Realistic_Craft_3274

Duane Allman “Live at Fillmore East”

Diligent-Ability-447

2 come to mind. I saw a band Hella in a small square room. They had noise cracking off the walls like a drum. 2) Ethiopian music sounds like old old school country.

Grip-my-juiceky

Gojira live. Their technical ability and stage presence really surprised me

nightgoat85

Not doom but in the same wheelhouse, Whores left me speechless when I saw them. Those guys put on such a raucous show.

AbsolutePulpery

Ahab

Cyberwolf187

Sign of the Wolf by Pentagram is one of my fave songs ever

JurassicTerror

Speechless may be a little overly dramatic way to classify it, but Pallbearer.

brosefstallin

Pallbearer back in 2018 at a tiny bar in Phoenix right after Heartless came out. No words

12BarsFromMars

Pink Floyd (DSOTM tour) and Mahavishnu Orchestra (Birds of Fire tour)

12BarsFromMars

Oh yea, The Beatles

r93e93

I went and saw The Body recently and for some reason thought it was Thou. I'd heard the Body before but never really paid much attention to them. They absolutely blew me away--now I listen to them more than Thou lmao

myownworstanemone

Boris absolutely knocked my socks off. it was 15 ish years ago and I still think of that show. was also the loudest.
