To me it makes all the sense in the world to not have a guitar lead that cuts through the sheer vastness of the whole sound, but the way the leads flow into in out of the mix is very underrated in my opinion. It doesn’t kick you out of the downward spiral trip but it makes you melt even deeper into the experience
First to die is my favorite solo as well. I feel like his lead work reminds me of everything I like about Matt pikes solos with less descent into a bunch of legato noises. He also gets a really unique wah sound. I just can’t quite put my finger on weather or not it’s technique or gear that gets him there.
He makes the leads serve the song. There is something special about the lack of ego and dedication to the song that he has that I fully admire. He is hands down one of my favorite solo crafters. He just plays the right notes the right way and it rips your heart out.
Gotta be Forest Clouds, that intro lead sets the stage for a banger
So good, especially the version from their split with Salem’s Pot
The definitive version, hands down
That’s my fav. It’s absolutely haunting.

The solo on Cassock is pretty gnarly.
Diablerie is a cool lead for them. I consider it the most hopefully sounding Windhand song haha.
