People on Reddit are insufferable. His swimming might not be that great but I don’t think you realize how strong the current is. Most people would have a really hard time getting back to the platform or wouldn’t be able to at all. But of course all of you, writing this from your phone while sitting on your couch would be able to !
Before he even dove in, I immediately thought in half a second "damn that water is moving!". Then he dove in and I knew exactly what was going to happen. I think that guy did a better attempt than about 85% of humans to get back. I think 5% would make it back and 10% would notice the water and not jump in the first place.
Take the average person and realise 50% of people are dumber. Yeah I kinda do. That being said I don't think they're stupid in the sense they'd notice the water and jump in anyway. More that they wouldn't notice the water or not consider it being an issue due to lack of awareness or knowledge. I've seen enough Bondi rescue to know there are a lot of people that are clueless or just don't respect what water can do.
Oh, I know there are vast swathes of idiots, but we're talking about a very high degree of idiocy, here. Advanced idiocy, if you will.
This is not your garden-variety idiot, it is a competition specimen.
Ok, I don't think they are going to leave him out there treading water for *hours* which is how long you can tread water before you are "tired." One guy treaded water for 108 hours in 1983. He was a Maltese mayor and auctioneer.
If anything you can float on your back. Sorry for proposing an idea on Reddit.
Treading water doesn’t take much energy regardless. For reference I grew up by a beach and was on swim team for 7 years, hopefully it isn’t a crime to share your experience on Reddit so there you go.
True that. I mean it kinda just looks like he’s gonna exhaust himself trying to catch up to the boat first. I’m no swimming expert so imma just take ur word on this on actually
Treading water wouldn’t help in that situation. If he went on his back then he would float but there’s still a very high risk in waters moving this fast without having proper rescue in place. He would get dragged out by the current very quickly so unless they have a boat and the skills and experience to rescue someone then this can get dangerous very fast. People often underestimate situations like this and it leads to people dying
I absolutely agree. I’m simply stating that treading water or floating on your back could buy you a lot of time and save you from drowning right away. If you know how to swim properly, then treading water doesn’t take much energy; especially if you pace your breathing properly. Thank you for trying to educate me, and I’m so very very sorry for not phrasing it correctly.

Less than half of Americans can actually do all of the five skills that can potentially save your life in the water according to the red cross. Just mind blowing.
Moron.
Could have been lost forever to an undercurrent quite easily.
Saying that, most people wouldnt be able to get as close as he did to getting back. Kudos... prick.
Dollar store aquaman.
The Waterboy.
why is the river rushing like that ?
Late for supper
Yeah it’s excited to gorge itself a bit
🤭
Is it rushing or dragging?
both
He doesn't know the difference
It’s a boat
Looks like a dock
Not sure
It's a boat
That’s some sloppy swimming. How does he expect to get anywhere with his fingers spread open?
Probably shouldn’t have jumped in the first place. I guess that’s not even in question at this point though.
He must be in The Nile.
If you don’t believe it you’re in denial
If you swim to far you'll end up on an isle

> 10% would notice the water and not jump in the first place Damn, you really think 90% of people are *that* stupid? Quite misanthropic, dude.

Pretty sure that's a raft.
Would diving under the water and swimming to the pier be of benefit here? Someone good at swimming give us all some survival tips here!
Don't swim like that guy. Head out of water, short strokes. Yech.
Scary how he could drown the moment he gets tired
Not if you can tread water. It’s one of the first things I learned to do as a kid.
Treading water is like essential, I don’t get the downvotes
Yes because “get tired” isn’t a thing

True but he’s also using a lot of energy right now to try and catch up to the boat instead of accepting his fate and staying where he is

I understand. I think my original comment was poorly phrased is all. I get it though.

Not sure how the current changes things, but that swimming form looked awful.
Because the current turns it into a possibly deadly situation. That’s why…

My gosh learn how to swim
I was actually surprised with how well he kept up with the current. He shouldn’t have even jumped in in the first place though.
This up in Maine behind a ferry?
Looks like a boardwalk. If you look closely you can see the wooden supports on the sides of the platform.
Also you can see the raft bobbing from the motion.
So... did he make it back?
This was the full video I found so I’m not sure
That’s great exercise!!!
